I am on the audio books. Book one was hard for me and the narrator has some “isms” that I find a little irksome. I’m on book 6 now and all is good! I’d say give it some time. If you make it to book 2 and don’t like it… move onto something else.

Volleyballmad

Thanks. It might be the narrator at this point. I’ll keep pushing on a bit longer.

Not sure if your a Rick and Morty fan but there are some parts where I think he sounds like the guy reading Morty his play on the Purge episode. Gets a lot better.

Volleyballmad

Ha okay

FusRoDaahh

Try reading them instead of listening. Audiobooks aren’t for everyone. I personally never would have made it through 100 pages if all I had was the audiobook.

Volleyballmad

Thanks. I only listen to audiobooks since I can do it while working.

Razorsedge980

Honestly nah. If your having a hard time with them outta the get go I’d say either try reading the books or listen when you can really focus. But here’s the dirty secret. WOT isn’t for everyone. Same as LOTR. Same as well everything. Don’t push yourself on the chance you might enjoy it. Now don’t get me wrong I’m a huge WOT fan read it multiple times physically and audiobook but I almost never recommend it to ppl. It’s just not as for everyone as ppl try to make you believe and that’s okay. If your planning on watching the show do that. Enjoy the story in whatever media you can but if you not enjoying the audiobook I say just return it for your audible credit. You might try listening to it while you do something mindless and can really pay attention but if that’s what your already doing i got nothing. And I’ll also say that trying to listen to the whole series while doing something mindless (unless that’s already how you listen) will be tedious for you since you like to listen when you work.( you state in another comment). Life’s short. Enjoy what you read listen to and watch :-D <3

Volleyballmad

Thanks, I’ll keep this in mind.

If youre that far in and not invested maybe its not the series for you

Twodaloo

I didn't love it at first. It took me a few tries to get into Eye of the World, and I didn't really feel invested in it until the third book. I'm not sure I "love" it even now (I'm on Book 10), but I do appreciate it and want to finish the journey. I'm enjoying the experience, but it's a lot of books with a lot of characters, detail, and world-building so it's not fast-paced. If it's not doing it for you, you can always try some other time!

Phasebro

Book 11 quickly goes back to great. You are getting over the hump

Twodaloo

Thanks! Winter's Heart definitely slowed me down, but there's still important stuff happening in each book. I will persevere! Lol I've come too far to give up now.

Volleyballmad

Thanks. I will keep trying for now. I keep zoning out and having to rewind.

Volleyballmad

Thanks

What fantasy series have you read or listened to previous to trying this one out? I’m just curious because I was fairly new to fantasy when I first started reading the series 2-3 years ago. I found out it was being adapted to tv and felt I had to finish it quickly but I wasn’t a fan of the pacing and really struggled. I switched to audiobook at book 8. I think it’s just soooo detailed and somewhat repetitive that it feels slow, but with the show coming out next month I got eye of the world on audible recently as a refresher and within few days I’m less than 2hrs from the end. I realized there’s so much I don’t remember and I def enjoyed it more then my first time reading it over a couple months. The style takes getting used to but if you make it to end of book 4 (one of my favourites) you will want to continue even through the slog (books 8-10– but to me it was only book 10 really)

Volleyballmad

I like progression mostly. I am reading the A Thousand Li series, Cradle, Forge of Destiny and Dragon Heart now (as they release new stuff). Others too, though I’d have to look in my library to refresh my memory. I enjoyed kings Dark Tidings and the Name of the Wind, but I think those series won’t be finished for quite some time. I will keep listening, I was just wondering what the best part of the series was. I am looking for it’s “niche “ so that I can cling to it. So far it’s about some people (whom I cannot tell apart yet) that are making a journey with some monsters. Travis Baldre and others do such a great job. This narrator is probably good too, but man, most characters sound the same. Maybe I’m wrong but so far they seem to be written with the same voices too. I cannot tell who is talking half the time. But then again I’m only half listening most of the time.

Honestly there are a lot of characters and at least with audiobook there is some slight differentiation, I had a hard time getting back into the story after taking a break from reading the book because I couldn’t remember what I read the first time. Now having read it first time and going to audiobook second after getting through the whole series I think reading you retain more info. I find it easier to zone out in an audiobook with any book I’m hearing/reading for the first time. It took me a long time to get into the habit of giving audiobooks and narrators a chance, I had to rewind many many times when I noticed I was zoning out, and that doesn’t happen when you are actually reading. I feel like this series just takes a bit more to get invested into, but it’s basically a good vs evil premise. I’m very excited to see an adaptation next month!

Volleyballmad

Thanks! I love watching adaptations after a good novel. It is why I picked the book back up.

Ghetrix

Dan is that you??

Volleyballmad

No, the internet is not quite that small. 😬

Ghetrix

Damn 😂😂😂 I got excited

Honestly as a kid I found TGH first and followed the series from there, that was the one that got me hooked. I recently started to reread and I feel it is difficult to get through TEOTW at the beginning but pretty worth it to make it to the end. Got one of my boys into the series as well.

RegularRichard1

I have this same problem with the Malazan series. It has so much praise and so many fans that I decided to try it. I've tried three times to get into it and I could not, even getting to the 4th book in my last attempt. I realized it wasn't for me. Maybe Wheel of Time isn't for you but hey, I heard Malazan was really good. Try that.

Volleyballmad

🤣 thanks, will do.
