I always assumed that he would have been one of the better wrestlers to run into on the street when he was still alive, he seemed to genuinely adore his fans
I met him at a toys for tots drive when I was a wee lad. If you donated a toy you got to meet him and Miss Elizabeth. My parents took me to the event and I was scared to meet him because he had been bitten by Jake the Snake’s snake and I was worried if I touched him it would poison me. He and Elizabeth calmed me down and picked me up in his massive arms for a photo. I wish I still had that picture, they were both such nice people to both myself and my parents.
Some of the best wrestlers get to where they are because of the way they react to fans. Look at John Cena for an obvious example.
Yes, you get the occasional dickhead like Ultimate Warrior, but most of them love interacting with the fans (on their own time, of course. Don’t go waiting for them at airports)
Kerry Von Erich got my mom addicted to cocaine but saved her dog from drowning once despite not having a foot.
(He didn't, this would just be a good story)
Kerry Von Erich is buried across the street from me!
Where the hell are *you* buried?!
Across the street from Kerry Von Erich
do you have all your feet?
Isn’t he buried with his brothers? His whole family are quite the tragic story.
Wasn't there like four Ultimate Warriors?
Nope just one shitty, oddly homophobic one.
John Cena has done a lot of good, then he became John Xi-na
Look man, people can give him shit, but the fact is that china is 4 times the number of people as the US, roughly 1.4 billion people. And the movies and media that can be shown there are controlled heavily by their government. It's a no wonder why you don't see many people from Hollywood talking shit about china.
I mean, I'm sure all the good people here, have never let an unjust word or opinion of their boss go unchecked right?
I dunno he could be a multi multi millionaire without pleasing a dictatorship....so can all of these companies and other Hollywood names. I get that it's business but it's also people's lives. Though Xina does do a lot of good.
You think so?
Who is going to make a movie, and cast an actor that is black listed in China? No one, same for television.
China is a more profitable market than the US and studios aren't going to limit themselves because an actor, or at least not him
Hell half the movies made today are made with direct Chinese investment.
So sure, he could commit career suicide, but can we blame him for not?
Just seems silly how many people think he is a bad guy for it.
I dont know I think its a bad look but I dont just single him out. I cant stand when companies like Nike etc all do the same apologetic BS with China yet they are so politically involved everywhere else.
Do you mean John Xina? The china apologist?
I met Jake the Snake once, however it was around the time when that documentary was made and while he was happy to talk about the good old days all I could see was his sad reality.
I met Jake at a comic convention like right after he got better. I've gotten quite a few autographs but he was the best experience out of all of em. To be fair to the rest, it was late in the day and nobody was in his line but still. Second best was Robert Z'Dar. Saddest was rich flair. Got that one the same day as Jake's and he hadn't blown back up yet. Clearly seemed like he didn't want to be there.
Watching the Dark Side of the Ring about Jake makes me understand him a little more. It doesn't excuse all of the things he did but when you see the Hell he was raised in, I think it explains things.
I met Ric Flair at the Charlotte Airport in one of the airport restaurants back in like I want to say 2008-2009 on a business trip coming back from Asheville. He was really nice but looked like beef jerky. Not a lot of people recognized him. I didn't at first, because I was only into wrestling as a kid in the early to mid 80s. But I was talking to him making regular conversation and he looked familiar. It wasn't until a kid came up with his dad for an autograph that I realized who he was.
He always looked like beef jerky.
For what its worth, I met Jake in ‘89 or so at the grand opening of a gas station and, of course, I was terrified of him and his snake, Damien. As they tell the story, he hung out with my parents for a half hour and had them in hysterics from the stories he told. They love that story because they thought he was going to just be a dumb wrestler but he charmed his way into their wallet to buy me a shirt, which he signed and I still have.
He used to rent my friends snake for the show whenever it was in town. i always assumed he had his own and travelled with it. nope he would just go to local collectors and rent theirs.
Yes and no, they did have a 'main snake' but as you guess it snakes don't travel very well. It wasn't local collectors they got the snakes from usually, they had a particular person that supplied them in Connecticut for shows. So there were a few snakes and they rotated them, so they did 'travel' with them, it was just a lot more snakes.
He seems to be in a lot better place mentally these days. He’s got sone health issues apparently, but he seems really happy whenever you see him anywhere.
His appearance on the JRE was insane. Soo many emotions.
Ngl, I got half way down the story to double check you weren't /u/shittymorph, but it was a lovely ending at least!
There's no way he'd show up in a comment thread on a wrestling post, that'd be too obvious...
He's right above me, isn't he?
That’s a pretty high compliment that I’ll gladly take. Not to mention u/shittymorph put the awards on my comment. By the way, thanks for those.
He is always watching
Man, the two most terrifying things of my childhood was Savage getting bitten by that snake and Papa Shango putting a hex on The Ultimate Warrior. Back then, you couldn't tell me wrestling was fake.
Sad ending for Miss Elizabeth.
> Luger had a 9mm Luger handgun in the car
Lex really committed to his character
Lost to time and family tragedy, unfortunately.
What a wholesome story, u/princesspeachespoopr!
It was a treat to see him at an early screening for Spider-Man in 2002. He didn't drop kayfabe, but he was so excited for the movie that the act slipped a bit. It was *adorable*.
Unless you'd been following the spidermanhype.com forums, his presence there was a mystery, as it was just a radio station promo and not the premiere. He was largely left alone before it started, but there was a huge cheer when he shows up onscreen and we hear "Bone Saw is Readyyyy!" When the movie ended, he was holding court in the lobby, and all the too-cool L.A. people were now fawning over him. He graciously ate it up, and it was a wonder to behold.
My dad spotted him for a bench press one day, apparently he was not in character and just a nice enough guy
Strong men also cry...
Brandt will fill you in on the details.
her life is in your hands Dude...
Man why’d you have to say that?
You mind if I do a J?
I'll suck your cock for a $1000
Brandt can't watch though
Or he has to pay $100.
I’m just gonna go find a cash machine.
It's gonna cost you more than that.
Might alone is not strength, and compassion is not weakness.
Like the cream, he rises to the top.
[YOUR MUSTACHE IS CROOKED!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZIcWlPLvCs)
If there was a Guinness record for "being on the most cocaine on national television," [Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan](https://youtu.be/rDWalFmERhY) would definitely hold the record.
That's what makes Gene a legend. He was such a pure straight man to these over the top personalities.
A true professional. I would be dying of laughter.
When I was a child I thought Gene was insane to keep interviewing these people who looked like they were gonna tear his head off in every interview. I thought he was so brave because of that.
Ha glad I’m not the only one. I would seriously get this pit in my stomach and feel so worried for him when it seemed like they were getting really angry.
Dude, Warrior would give them a HARD run for their money.
There's a story of Vince McMahon and Hulk getting the first script for the movie No Holds Barred and not liking it so they stayed in a hotel room for 2 days and rewrote it completely. Can you imagine the cocaine?
Jesus Christ I'm cranked up just watching that. OH YEAH.
The story I heard was Gene was into coke more than any of them.
you don't need to be gene or a wrestler to like coke. ask me how i know
*not enough coke
Rumor has it Doctors once found blood in Macho Man's Coke stream.
This made my day, thsnks
[macho man and steak](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6DTVZwNRQI)
Both of them were national treasures.
Man that one truly is one of the best interviews ever oh, yeah!
I want to do the amount of coke he did before that monologue
Don’t be so hard on yourself, at least do a key bump.
I would not recommended this. Macho Man, Chris Farley and Stevie Nicks are know as the "Holy Trinity" among the upper echelons of the coke-appreciating elite. Attempting to match their pace has brought legendary party animals to their knees more than once. If you don't personally party with Randy so frequently that you would never have to question the volumes involved, then I am certain you wouldn't make it 30 minutes into his Tuesday afternoon still breathing.
The Macho Man was a good dude.
..had the last reputation laugh over Hogan
Anything with Macho Man is money to this day, whereas at the 2021 Wrestlemania, anytime Hogan appeared on the big screen the entire crowd booed... And he was hosting so it was all night.
neither of them were great people.
Macho Man was emotionally abusive towards his wife.
Hogan is a racist who also treats his family like shit.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Man people on reddit really just want things to be black and white.
Hogan: I don't know about the black part, brother.
Macho definitely had his demons and wasn't perfect but he still was a good person.
True, but I think Randy learned from his days with Liz and grew
total speculation but randy seemed a broken man at the end of his road before he died. Not someone with a new lease on life whose grown.
DDP is one of the few people who seems to have made a strong effort to be a positive influence after wrestling. I don't know that the guy is an angel and I'm sure he's a dick at times, but man helped jake the snake get clean despite jake's best efforts.
>total speculation but randy seemed a broken man at the end of his road before he died. Not someone with a new lease on life whose grown.
Yeah... that does indeed sound like total speculation
The last few years of his life were spent married to his old high school sweetheart, raising dogs, and burying the hatchet on all his old grudges.
Yeah, Randy had some really difficult years in the early 2000s. But by all accounts he found a great deal of peace in the last few years of his life.

Luger has had a complete turnaround after his conversion and his later stroke.
He saved us from the Mayan apocalypse
NOTHING MEANS NOTHING
_UNJUSTIFIABLY IN A POSITION I'D RATHER NOT BE IN_
*ON BALANCE, OFF BALANCE, DOESN'T MATTER I'M BETTER THAN YOU ARE, YEAAH*
"Nothing means nothing" what do you mean by that?
It was a line in one of the wrestling promos he did, youtube that line and you’ll find the video. It’s truly amazing, Macho Man had great charisma.
Oh I know that was the line Mean Gene said after Randy starts the interview :D
LOL, ah I’m slow, I forgot Gene followed up with that. I should have know better, I’ve watched that promo like 10 times lol
[Here's an album of all the Macho Man Randy Savage gifs I've made.](https://imgur.com/gallery/6kYed)
This album brought me back 5 or 6 years when you and someone else had it out in a thread with wrestling gifs.
Oh man. What a fun time that was. Because of you I was texting with my friends entirely with macho man gifs
EditingAndLayout's GIFs are a mood.
How does my boomer ass save these on my iphone?
Oh hell yeah. Thanks for this! I remember when you posted a lot of these, having them all in one place is fantastic 😍
These are all just lovely. Thank you.
Here he is on a British children's television show:
At [8:20](https://youtu.be/_mtjSLhl6yc?t=500) he's asked what he thinks of accusations of pro wrestling being fake and I think he actually gives a really cool answer.
That is actually a really good answer.
I never knew the Macho man was such an articulate person. Def increases my already high opinion of him.
Should have pulled a Haku and bit the kids nose off.
I think thats the first time I've ever seen him without sunglasses on.
Yeah I was surprised by how, not intense his eyes were. Idk why I was expecting some crazed glare 🤔
This made my day. My childhood came rushing back.
the crew loosing it to "and 14 days later...the snake died", fucking great
That was so damn wholesome! Charisma just dripping off him while interacting with anyone, including kids and puppets.
What a Legend.
I dig it.
My Macho Man story:
So, it was about 1986-1987. I was 10 or so, living on Staten Island. Me and my stepfather go to the local video store, which is basically like the one in Clerks. They all were back then. My stepfather was friends with the clerk there and when we came in he told us to go in the back with him. He wanted to introduce us to a friend of his.
So we go back there and he introduces us to a guy named Randy Savage. He’s just leaning against a desk or something and just wearing jeans and a t-shirt, his hair tied into a ponytail. My stepfather shakes his hand and introduces us while I’m staring at him trying to work out if he really is THE Macho Man Randy Savage. I mean, he looked like he was just a normal guy.
So I ask him, are you the real Macho Man? He looks down at me and goes OH YEAH! And sure nuff it’s him. My jaw hits the floor and the adults just continued talking. I don’t remember much after that point.
I'm crying in the club RN
That's the alcohol mixed with a little bit of trauma. Or is it a little bit of alcohol mixed with a lot of trauma? I can't remember
Can't remember? Sounds like the alcohol is working its magic!
Surprisingly nuanced response.
God I fucking miss Randy.
I miss being a kid and watching the WWF and NWA/WCW. That was quality entertainment imo.
Yeah, I went to therapy. My therapist said I'm OCD, one cool dude, oh Yeah!- my favorite line of all time lol
And every drug.
I hope Macho Man Randy Savage is skiing on a mountain of cocaine in heaven
Well you gotta give it to him. This doesn't seem easy
I wouldn't have wanted to share a toilet with him, but a few cold beers for sure.
I was going to say I’d love to snort a rail of coke with him
I don't think any cocaine in that dude's vicinity lasted very long, lmao
Whoever said cocaine doesnt do anyone good, never met Macho Man Randy Savage.
Why not both? Snort rails off the toilet together!
Time to slither with the snakes, oh yeeeyah
It’s not crying that makes Randy Savage Macho, Randy Savage is macho because of how he snaps back after he cries, oh yeah!!!
What a fucking legend.
holy shit. was macho man randy savage, more woke than the public was ready for during his era? holy fucking shit
Absolutely. At the beginning of this interview Arsenio moves the table out of the way to see his boots, going "Wait a minute, wait a minute, you got a a white boot, you got a black boot, you got your belt-"
Randy's response: "I'm not a racist. Live and let live Arsenio, don't put me under the gun so quickly."
Coming into the 90s there was a common idea of the "new man" or "man of the 90s" that was strong, but unlike the action heroes of the past he could show a sensitive side. A nurturing side. He was able to express his emotions and still be considered a Macho Man, oh yeah!
[Snap into a Slim Jim!](https://youtu.be/UV17XYCzkWU)
Loved his intensity growing up. 80s wrestling was the shit
He doesn't cry. He creams. And then rises to the top
I’ll never get over the fact that that is his real voice
the macho man is not a character. the only other person in the business who can top him is vince. vince is even worse when the cameras are off from what ive heard.
Pretty much the same
It's pretty similar, he just pushes on his voice harder to get that strained effect when he's performing.
Oh wow! All I had ever seen led me to believe that no matter how unlikely he did in fact talk “macho”. Thanks for setting me straight
Imagine - ooh yeah - imagine being able TO SPEAK like the macho man
Macho Man was such more cooler and talented than Hulk Hogan it’s not even close.
He also happily put over other wrestlers.
Would Hogan happily drop a championship to a Ricky Steamboat level character?
You mean to tell me there's a whole other stratosphere Macho Man?
Surprising advice from the Macho Man, however I like when he is wicked agitated better.
He's made many appearances but he always seems to be 10x cooler when he's on Arsenio's show.
It's impressive to deliver that sort of wisdom, and openness during that time period, and to do it on that much cocaine is amazing.
Please do not let your tears distract you from the fact that on May 20th 2011, Randy Savage threw Jesus Christ off his throne, and plummeted 16 ft through a sacrament table to prevent the 2012 rapture.
Now I need a Slim Jim
Only when he can’t snap into a Slim Jim
Preach it, brotha'!
This macho man might start crying too
Now this was a cool dude. Did his own insanely wild thing but always had principles and those were principles you could always get behind on some level.
What a class act
Where is u/shittymorph when you need him
Sounds like Bigfoot it is
He does, Spider-Man made fun of his outfit that his husband made him.
He was soooo cool, they still use him on the Slim Jim boxes.
Heather Swanson before the transition.
Literally a visionary man for his time, a legend for sure
For the Avatar the Last Airbender fans, The Boulder is based on Macho man.
"The Boulder feels conflicted about fighting a young blind girl."
... I guess you've never heard of the rock?
Seems like an amalgamation of the two. The Boulder is clearly a Rock reference, but that voice is pure Macho Man.
And voiced by Mick Foley, aka Cactus Jack/Mankind/Mick Foley.
I think you forgot Dude Love.
You are correct. I always thought the border was inspired by macho man. TIL it was the Rock:
SHUT UP, "THE PEBBLE"!!!!
Too bad he was an abusive piece of shit and this was all just his character.
So is Dr Disrespects persona somewhat based off Macho Man Randy Savage? If you take away the voice they seem very similar, I guess minus the coke as well.
Not even remotely close.
que bueno rola papu
Real heartfelt moment from the Macho, the heart is the strongest muscle
He is literally one of the greatest wrestlers of all time!
I still say this is Dog the bounty hunter early in his career...he just doesn't want to admit it
Damn he was awesome. Never met the man, but I miss him.
