why do people get so defensive when talking about vancouver?
By - Enough-Most528
I think OP's point is not that people shy from criticisms, but become very hostile when anyone challenges certain positive beliefs they have about this city (hence "defensive").
For example you may be very passionate about the quality of this city's bananas, bragging to your international friends that vancouver has world class bananas and banana related accessories. It becomes part of your identity to be proud of living in a city with great bananas. So when somebody offers an argument that contradicts your opinion, some redditors get furious and take it as a personal insult.
When was the last time you heard anybody here brag that Vancouver had world class anything? If anything, this subreddit is already super self-deprecating.
We’re a proud nuclear weapons-free zone and anyone who says otherwise is gonna get fucked up and have their bottle caps taken.
Everyday I think back to my participation in the delivery of that project and smile. Good times. ❤️
Why should people be forced to engage with you? I live here and know what it's like, don't need to hear it from you
I don't like being around negative people, it's draining.
Yep, it's amazing how much your life improves when you remove from it people who just find any reason to complain about stuff. Once you shed negativity from your life, it's like you realize you were living while carrying a backpack full of rocks.
Negative people have each other to complain to, they don't need me as their sounding board.
Lmao there's a difference between being negative and genuinely finding problems about Vancouver and wanting to talk about them
Thanks for providing a perfect example of the former.
Jesus you people are such fucking snowflakes. No wonder this city is in such disrepair
You don't detect a theme of negativity in your comments? Do you know what negativity means?
If you genuinely think my initial comment was negative then i think you're a bit too sensitive. Oh no, I'm sorry was that negative?
Seems like everything you have to say about Vancouver is negative.
Well what are you talking to people about specifically?
I think most people recognize it has ups and downs. Everyone I know at least talks about it openly. Maybe they don't want to talk about your personal gripes? Or, perhaps people in general don't like hearing smack talk about their community. I mean, why would they?
But again. What are you trying to say that illicits defensiveness? Example?
With grammar as shitty as yours, it's likely you don't communicate well online nor "IRL".
And, to your point, everybody has things they like & dislike about where they live. If you're getting so much push-back, it's probably a "you" problem.
Hey at least in Vancouver people only get "defensive". You ever been to Boston? Shit talk that city to one of them and "you will be punched right in ya fawkin mowf hole". There's alot of cities and places we're guys will throw down to defend where they are from. Your city is who you are, it's who your friends are. Talk down my city, your talking me down. People get defensive because thier city is as important and beloved to them as the air in thier lungs.
I get infuriated on my travels when people say " I'm from Vamcouver, I live in Vancouver, moving to Vancouver, Vancouver, Vancouver, Vancouver.."
And they arnt from Vancouver.
Do you live west of boundary road? Then don't say your from my humble fishing/timber village. Tell all the nice people at the bar/airport/resort your from Surrey/Burnaby.
Despite being called one of the best places to live anywhere, Vancouver is really a difficult place to live. Housing, parking, transit, proximity to industry, homelessness, drug use, crime, politics. It's bound to make somebody's blood boil for one reason or another.
What major North American city doesn't have those problems and people complaining about it?
Why do y'all keep saying this? What do other cities have to do with it? Just because we're not the only city with these problems, doesn't mean we should just let them go on unchecked; your comment is derailing.
Their comment is spot on and a fair one. The people who whine about these things and move are shocked to find out that those problems are in other cities too.
People shit in the street in San Francisco! That means we shouldn't complain about the issues present in Vancouver. What kind of logic is that?
I think the argument is that we are not special and most cities go through this. That does not mean we should not strive to be better.
That's any major city. On a side note, our transit system is actually outstanding so I'm not sure how that get lumps in with all the other negative things.
The Expo line is over capacity
I feel many people seem like they are aware of those things but are actually in denial about them and get worked up when somebody, especially somebody from the outside/abroad points at those things. And then they feel like they need to justify being here or why this is the best place despite all these things. Funny. Happens everywhere. Not just here.
I find any criticism ultimately ends with this rebuttal: "but the mountains are gorgeous"
Have you heard about the [other Vancouver](https://answermethis.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/vancouvert.jpg)?
Some people are sensitive, handle with care
There is a cult of adoration of this city. And self importancy. The best city in the world. And everything needs to be positive. Vancouver people dread negativity. It is all about positivity, superficiality, be fit and eat a lot of kale, live the fullest life, never grow up, preach the positivity, keep yourself busy and dont stop because if you stop and really take a profound look around you, you might discover things you dont like and that might interrupt your zen bubble and that would be devaaaaaastating. There are many good things about this city and many rotten things in this city but people dont like to think about the hard stuff, they take their bubble tea and will protest because they took a cherry tree down but not for some more important shit. Cuz cherry trees are so pretty and where will they take their instagram pictures.
> ~~Vancouver~~ people dread negativity
Don't fucking talk about something you have no knowledge of.
Some of y'all sound like a bunch of stuck up snobs and it honestly is pathetic and laughable.
Go back to Alabama with your y'all-ing
Someone clearly feels attacked.
