After 2 rounds of sabotage, Sea to Sky Gondola reopens once more
By - HemiChgr
The insurance deductible must be insane
The requirements as well. I bet they have tiny security guards riding the cables at night now.
> I bet they have tiny security guards riding the cables at night now.
Actually now they just electrify the whole cable every night after shutdown.
>I can't tell if you're joking or not, wouldn't this be a fire hazard?
And it's illegal, in most countries anyway.
I would say it’s a non-zero chance that they’ve been denied coverage now and they have declined to make that fact public.
There is absolutely no way they would open without insurance coverage
Liability insurance they will have for sure. Idk about property damage tho
They’d have at least some insurance. But insurance that would fully repair it in the event of another cutting.
They mentioned elsewhere they will continue coverage with their current insurer, HUB International.
Insurance companies rarely, if ever, refuse you, they just charge you more.
Actually if you look around you'll notice there are zero trampoline parks now. That's exactly what ran them out of business was insurance refusing to insure.
Those places are dangerous as hell. A guy died in the Richmond one, with his kids there.
I went twice and hurt myself both times.
Yep. Unfortunately for gymnastics in bc they're now paying more as a result of those places. As well trampoline use was severely limited to competitive kids only. Despite the fact that gymnastics coaches are well trained and have a policy of one at a time on a trampoline.
Nonetheless, the trampoline parks fucked everyone else who treated trampolines with respect they deserve.
Both times?! Strange flex but ok
How is that a flex? I'm saying I injured myself. It's easy to smash a knee on the dividers between trampolines.
I find it easier not to but whatevs
Man fuck trampoline parks. So many people have been paralyzed in those places they are not even worth it.
Absolutely. They really made a money's ass of it for gymnastics who has a way lower incident count on them than those shitty places.
Two local and recent examples of this are of ICBC not insuring luxury vehicles anymore and of certain insurers dropping condo/strata insurance.
I work for a large insurance brokerage and the guy across from me got at least 4 calls a week that I would overhear of him shutting down people looking to insure their trampoline park.
They should install more cameras around that area.
So they can catch the guy after they cut the cables again?
It wouldn't cost that much to pay for live monitoring of the cameras
Like real life 5 Nights at Freddy's.
They already had that. They watched the last cable-cut live, but had no way to act.
TBH I personally think they should have a way to start the line, remotely. Can't cut through a moving cable...
Crazy. Could they not have called the police? I thought the police would have sent a helicopter if they knew someone was in the progress of cutting a cable but maybe the squamish police don't have a helicopter and couldn't arrive on time.
I think police would need to be literally on-site to be able to respond quickly enough. It only takes single-digit minutes -- probably 5 minutes at most, for an athletic person to climb a tower, cut the cable using a cordless angle grinder, then climb down. Police wouldn't even be able to get up the mountain in time if they were at the base.
well, i mean if they finally catch him then he can't do it again right?
Unless there’s another.
What do you propose the solution is?
Ok you’ve earned the upvotes
I vote the Simpsons method. We bring in gorillas
Then we’re stuck with gorillas!
apes together strong
When is the cable cutting ceremony?
Found the saboteur
Based on the last two years, I'd guess sometime this fall.
Sometime during the smoke season I imagine.
Really really soon I Hope. I wonder how many times it will happen before they stop trying to rebuild.
Why cram an ugly machine into the relatively unspoiled beauty of nature? It's a completely pointless gondola and I wholeheartedly support any actions taken against it.
Tourism plus people with disabilities can appreciate the great view
Permanently deface the landscape, and flood it with people who already litter and abuse other local attractions and park sites. Some popular hikes are already being restricted because of the endless heards of people craving a picture for social media attention, and not caring enough to respect the environment along the way. Theres already a gondola up Grouse, and three up in Whistler if you actually need to take a ride to the top to enjoy nature. We need to stop destroying things for all future generations, just to make a few people happy now.
Wow, dude. Without engaging future generations, we’re screwed.
Let’s hope they’ve increased security enough to prevent it from happening again.
[“We have put in place, not just a security system, but a security architecture, that is by far the most advanced around any lift operation on the planet,” explains general manager Kirby Brown, who naturally won’t go into specifics about what exactly has been installed.](https://www.citynews1130.com/2021/04/16/sea-to-sky-gondola-security/)
This is begging for an article in The Beaverton.
"*Sea to Sky Gondola reopens just in time for sabotage season*", or something.
*After multiple sabotages and costly repairs to the Gondola, BC Tourism wonders if its finally time to... cut the cord.*
So....what happens if it gets cut again?
[But the fourth one stayed oop!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNaXdLWt17A&t=40)
Stop that, STOP THAT!
over/under on when the next sabotage occurs?
Late September when things die down again a bit for tourism and the security starts to slack a bit.
Last time it operated from May to September, but there's "heightened security" this time.
Hmm... August Long Weekend?
Honestly, unless they install CCTV or teach the bears to act as security, this will continue to be a re-occurring event. I'll take the over on that.
Well done gondola, well done.
Such a good spot to bring our elderly relatives to enjoy mountain views. I'm glad they'll have this opportunity again.
Just make sure they have their will made out before you get on. "You go ahead grandma, I'm going to hang out down here"
“…and make sure that you’ve included me in your will. Love you, Nana. ~~RIP~~ Have fun!”

Better get in there now before it gets sliced a third time
I’ve never been and I want to go 😒
Right?! Last summer we went like 2 weeks before it got cut! So happy we got to enjoy it, honestly it’s one of the best attractions around for the price.
Whoever did this should carry the debt of repairs for life.
whoever did this should be shot out of a cannon into the howe sound
Canada doesn't have the death penalty, but if we shoot him far enough that you can't find the body, did he really die?
"Yes sir just step right into this tube right here and you are free to go."
Fired before you hit the ground kinda thing
Sounds like a pretty easy out vs slave labour.
Does anyone have any idea/theory on who would be behind this and why?
Pissed off natives.
Could be the environmentalists that were upset when the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park was split in two with a private company taking ownership of the land under the gondola towers.
I'm planning to go in the Fall /s
My bet is the night of September 23rd/24th
Why of course these security drones I sell are bonded! Guaranteed not to start skynet. Unfortunately they have been known to go feral and kill dear....
