Oh, I know! I was watching the video they did to thank the French and just laughing so hard and trying to imagine an American official release in that vein. I literally could not imagine our DoD doing this. We are not that hip.

idubyai

No worries, I deleted the comment because it was causing too much distraction by trolls and causing arguments. I know there was nothing wrong with what I said and it had good upvotes, but I am not here for upvotes. I just wanted to show support and cracked an innocent joke. But I don't want people to be getting upset and to take away from this AWESOME MoD vid!!!

can you post a link to the france video?

...But it's in the context of the American DoD. EDIT: The context is the comment that was replied to. Is saying, "man, this is so cool, I doubt we could pull it off back home" really such a problem? This kind of divisiveness is exactly what the Kremlin wants to see.

idubyai

exactly.... I think that some of these people are trying to make this an issue on "other entities" behalf.. because I am a little confused why I am a white racist against other white ppl for calling out DoD videos for not having any swag or for being full of white people doing cringe... lol

sweaterbuckets

jesus christ... do y'all have to bring white/black into every fucking thing?

Talosian_cagecleaner

It's a domestic joke that is best left at home. It does not translate well. If you lived here, it means "so normal and boring that you want to laugh at how normal and boring it is." It simply does not translate, because our little wierd race BS is actually not really that funny anyway. Unless if a black comedian does it. Because they got the number memorized and its a good joke. Sorry. Aericans need to be more careful. This is an international reddit. It is actually not bad humor, btw. Lots of race stuff is out of bounds for good reason! The intentions are malicious! But pretty much everyone here enjoys a good "white people..." joke. We gots our issues. Sorry.

[deleted]

Wow, using "white" as some synomym for bad or lame is quite the mature approach to things.

Hellofriendinternet

Dude I hate to point out the obvious, but this dude has more swag, drip, flex, and chill than all of the US’s boring, old honky politicians put together. Ukraine knows how to reach the masses and do it hilariously. They burn the Russians so hardcore that the high brow disses soar over their moonfaced heads. If the DoD were to try something like this, the best they could come up with would be a horrible rendition of Stanky Legg or Harlem Shake done on an outdated version of MS video player. Hats off to ya, Ukraine. You guys are setting the bar higher and higher every day.

[deleted]

Sure, but its a video that is made by Ukrainians about German military support using a German meme song. So why drag it into the gutter of American identity politics?

taranig

Because we're Americans and we have this weird kink...

idubyai

These are ru trolls. I argued for a bit, but once I stated that I am Korean and White mixed, they couldnt use the accusations of me being a black racist anymore... This seems like some sort of campaign that the gru uses, but I dunno and dont care anymore. wasted more than 15 mins here and I regret that. lol

ReneG8

I mean he IS letting the chinese in. At a moment of geopolitical instability. And no learnings from the past (reliance on russian gas, thanks schröder).

TV4ELP

quite the contrary. If he didn't step in the chinese would have had a 30% port. Now they only can get 24.9%, which removes any ability of deadlocking decissions that need a 3 fourth majority. They basically pump in money without getting any control. Same with the chip maker that is currently in question of being bought. Their tech is so old, even china already has more advanced stuff. And it's only a secondary chip maker who does the same as infineon (the biggest german one) but just in bad.

Blackfyre301

If it actually does work out like that, then that is very clever.

exactmat

The chinese would have 0% port. Thx to him stepping in they now get 24,9%. Get your facts right.

TV4ELP

No, they would have had 30% the deal was basically nearly closed. They would have had 30 and not 0.

StressedOutElena

Oh boy... How do I break that one to you.... The... The Chinese are already here for well over a decade, silently buying up logistic hubs under the pretense of their "silk railroad".

Draedron

Brechmittel Scholz is quite bad.

MyPigWhistles

Do you somehow assume that someone forced Scholz to [support Ukraine](https://www.bundesregierung.de/breg-en/news/military-support-ukraine-2054992)? Scholz broke with a fundamental pillar of German foreign policy and decided to arm a country in an ongoing conflict. And he made this decision in February, when Ukraine got the first delivery of Panzerfaust 3 and Stinger.

VR_Bummser

Everything send was approved by him. He is the one that broke with russia in the end.

awkward_replies_2

It's his STRATEGY to be boring. Not making bold announcements. Looking a bit confused. Giving strangely defensive answers. If you read into it, it makes sense - he does not want to give the Russians the ability to propaganda-weaponize Anti-German sentiments in Russia - a passionately speaking anti-Russian German chancellor would help them internally. He still delivered the arms to Ukraine though, and that's what counts.

Cool-Top-7973

>It's his STRATEGY to be boring. Not making bold announcements. Looking a bit confused. Giving strangely defensive answers. This, really. It is a tactic he learned from Merkel. He is, as Merkel before, de-politicizing politics. Let others (in Scholz's case his coalition partners, in Merkel's case even her own party's ministers) fight the political battle, after everything is essentially settled step in and act as the solution was your idea all along, thereby appearing as the adult in the room who was above the squabeling sides of the political fronts. I'm still not sure if this tactic won't come around mid to long term and harm political culture by its de-politizing effect on society. Yet compared to what is going on in other western democracies it seems the lesser of two evils for now.

krummulus

When ukraines PR team has a person going thrue german memes of the past decade to find a fitting one for this message :D I'm really wondering how big that PR team is, they definetly put a lot of effort in their shitposting Edit: Original source of this meme is a supermarket ad from 2014

potato_in_an_ass

One of Ukraine's strengths is a huge diaspora around the world to draw from. So if you need a meme with cultural impact in a given country, there are Ukrainians who have lived there for years and can help you make it perfect.

Evakotius

Is it about being huge tho? I mean, there are lots of russians everywhere, but most you can see everywhere from them is hate.

potato_in_an_ass

I think it's nuanced, in part because of the cultural differences between the two and the different styles of emigration. The biggest factor I think is that Ukrainian society has a long history of being self-organizing, while Russian society is top-down. So Russian diaspora harasses Ukrainians and parrots Kremlin talking points, while Ukrainian diaspora finds ways to contribute to the war effort, and the government views this as an asset rather than a liability. Ukrainian society is like a swarm of bees in my experience. From outside it is chaotic and full of discord, but if you poke the hive the whole swarm is coming for your ass with a vengance. Also Russian emigrants have historically enjoyed a much higher status than Ukrainians. Not because of deliberate discrimination, but because before the war not many people knew anything about Ukraine. So Ukrainians had much more of a tendency to assimilate and genuinely interact with other cultures. (You see similar things with communities of people who move from richer countries to poorer ones in general. The higher status the origin country, the less assimilation in general.)

javfan69

Wow, so I've noticed in following the war that the Ukrainian military is following Auftragstaktik (mission-type tactics) a type of fighting style where tactical decision making is devolved to the lowest level possible - so guys on the ground are given a LOT of freedom in deciding *how* to complete an objective. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission-type_tactics This is in stark contrast to how the Russian military has fought historically: top-down specific and rigid orders. I had always assumed that the Ukrainian military had learned Auftragstaktik from training with NATO and the west after the 2014 invasion but now I see that there's a deep *cultural* component to them fighting this way. Wow, really, thank you for your comment, it all makes sooooo much more sense now with how fuckin well they've been able to use mission-type tactics in this war - it's in their fuckin blood! Ukrainians never cease to amaze me.

potato_in_an_ass

I got to watch first hand back in 2014 how Ukrainian society self-organized to get supplies to their troops, form volunteer batallions, and generally patch the holes left by the (at the time) woefully inadequate government and lack of support from the west. Grannies would collect money from their village, then take a trip to Poland to support their newfound love of sport hunting. All legal to import for sporting purposes. Then it got "lost" when they came back and suddenly appeared on the front lines. Ukrainians really are awesome.

javfan69

Holy shit! That's amazing! This is why Ukraine will win! While the Russians are emptying prisons of rapists and murderers to unleash on the Ukrainian population, Ukrainians of all walks of life are *volunteering* to do their part. This is their war of independence, we're literally witnessing the (re)birth of a nation and it should serve as an inspiration to all freedom loving people everywhere. My bet is with Ukrianian grannies - who wish to see their grandkids grow up in freedom - kicking ass over Russian convicts and conscripts fighting for nothing 💪

romario77

I think this is a deep part of Ukrainian culture that has historical roots. Ukraine had Cossacks - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cossacks . Cossacks were democratic at the time when most of the states around had monarchies. And democracy is even more incredible in military. Also - a lot of people would run away to cossacks to be free as there was no feudal rule or other type of slavery/subjugation of people and everyone was more or less equal. I think big part of it still remains in Ukrainian society even after 300 years of russian/soviet rule - the independent spirit and yearning for freedom. The society knows how to deal with it and it's not afraid when others are free and make their independent decisions.

Apokal669624

I noticed that after 24 February and most of world's intelligences shitted in their pants claiming the same narrative as russia about "3 days to occupy Kyiv", someone started few propaganda campaigns. One of this campaign called as "UkRaInE iS wInNiNg BeCaUsE nAtO tEaChEd UkRaInIaNs", which is totally bullshit. Like yeah, Ukraine and NATO countries has many trainings together, but it was usual every year trainings, not **NATO teaching Ukrainians**. Ukraine just joined it and thats all. And i think that this propaganda campaign focused in inner auditory, because **every Ukrainian loosing shit from laughing** when hearing "oH yOu KnOw ItS aLl BeCaUsE nAtO tEaChEd UkRaInIaNs". Like its simple logic. Yeah, NATO have some good tactic trainings, I'm not arguing that, but when NATO was in actual war last time? In Yugoslavia? Maybe Iran and Iraq with allied forces? Welp, Ukrainian forces were in this wars too. And from other hand, Ukraine in war with russia since 2014 year. In **modern nowadays** war, with **real modern war experience**, not just some tactic trainings. Does NATO have at least some soldiers with real modern combat experience today? I guess yeah, but not so many. Does NATO have experience in war against russia? I can bet its not. So simply NATO invited Ukraine to NATO trainings, so Ukraine can share modern war experience with NATO and more importantly to share experience in war against russia. The only things that NATO really teach Ukrainians, is how to use NATO weapons and also UK teaching our troops for some basic soldiers program. And this teaching started **after 24 February**. Talking about this propaganda campaign for inner auditory - its also very simple. West intelligences overestimated russia and underestimated Ukraine, so basically almost all intelligences in the world shit in their pants with their assumptions about this war. Imagine what panic could start if some billion star general from Pentagon just came out to press conference and will say "welp, dear Americans, **we don't have any clue about real power of our enemies, we don't have any clue about our allies real power, and we don't fucking understand what fucking going on, because our data is so fucking outdated last time it was updated when dinosaurs were alive**". I understand why this propaganda even started, but honestly, thats piss me off really hard. When it was few other narratives for the same propaganda line like "Biden warned Zelensky about russian invasion, but Zelensky refused to evacuate Ukrainians", i was fucking mad, because its so damn bullshit i even don't have words to describe it. Like i understand you guys need some strong narratives to not spread panic between your people , you need to save your face and tell people thats you control everything, but god damn, can you do your inner politic not blaming Ukraine in your fuck ups? Gosh. After all, NATO is our allies, NATO countries helping us and without NATO help we would already lose, but narrative about NATO trained Ukrainians and thats why we winning right now - is totally bullshit.

javfan69

It really is bullshit! I seriously could not comprehend how well Ukrainian troops are using mission-type tactics from only 8 short years of "training with NATO", it literally did not make sense to me until I read the comment above this morning! Mission-type tactics are very very VERY difficult to teach - for example, Japan and South Korea have trained with the USA and the west for DECADES and they still struggle to use mission-type tactics because their cultures are *deeply* hierarchical, it's very difficult for their lower level guys to operate independently without approval from higher-ups (I've even noticed this in my own field, engineering, when working from people from this part of the world - SUPER competent as individuals but it's VERY difficult for them to "change the plan" that's already been approved). But you Ukrainians, WOW, it *is* how you operate on a deep level and now you finally have the opportunity to do so. When this is all over YOU guys will be teaching us how to fight. You guys are amazing.

potato_in_an_ass

I think it is less about internal propaganda to calm the population, and more about Americans thinking we are the center of the world. But trying to stop an American from making everything about them is like trying to make a Ukrainian stop eating salo. It's just how we are, we can't help ourselves. Otherwise I agree. It drives me crazy too - especially after we abandoned Ukraine in 2014.

Aiass

Not being from Germany, I didn't understand the dude dancing, (and the meme behind it) but I still liked the clip! Gepards really are super sexy!

sephris

The dude is from this "commercial" from one of our major supermarket chains here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyTJYI-JpHU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyTJYI-JpHU) "Supergeil" means "super hot" or "super sexy". I don't think there's a deeper message behind it, it just puts relatively mundane supermarket products into that context and has fun with it, and that's why it went viral when it came out.

[deleted]

It's funny to think, but you'd think this thing would be ineffective against air targets, but it's actually super effective. It's just surprising. We should supply Ukraine som CIWS systems too lol

0B3nE0

Super effective, Super geil;) German Mantis could be a nice Addition against iranian Drones, would like to send those

[deleted]

The mantis is cool, as an American I think Germany has cooler weapons than we do lol.

Tokyogerman

Don't spend that much on defense but if you go down the rabbit hole of researching our weapon industry there are a lot of gems hidden there.

[deleted]

Germany doesn't really need to spend that much with a Major American base in their country lol, anyone who fucked with Germany would be wiped off the face of the planet instantly. Germany is one of the safest countries to live in, I visited and as an American everyone was nice to me, you don't get that alot of places in Europe. But I felt welcome in Germany. And the food is amazing. The beer is also really good and the chocolate is out of this world lol.

Bright_Vision

Is the major american base you are speaking of Ramstein? Or are there more? And yeah, on a World stage level, it's absolutely very safe. With us ramping up military spending, even more so.

[deleted]

Yes Ramstein is the base

Der_Schubkarrenwaise

> as an American I think Germany has cooler weapons than we do lol. Thank you for that opinion. It really means a lot. Let me return the compliment in saying that I really like the over-the-top approach on most of the famous US-made systems. Lots and lots of steel and fire. But in the end it is the hitting of targets that really makes your day. [Here is a short clip](https://youtu.be/UtmpGA137hc) of a Gepard firing full auto. It's lovely.

[deleted]

That thing is scary. Good thing you're on our side

SlantViews

Er, Tomcat still wins that top spot. Sorry, nothing oozes cool as a Tomcat did on a rainy day.

[deleted]

I love the F-14, it was a sad day when we decommissioned it.

Mc_Generic

Switzerland problem again 😒 The MANTIS ammo is produced in the same Oerlikon factories. Switzerland even doesn't approve of exporting ammo that already is in Germany. German politicians are already threatening to stop all military cooperation. With the factories literally being property of german companies, let's hope that the pressure will make Switzerland reconsider 🙏

MarschallVorwaertz

The Oerlikon Factory is now a Rheinmetall Daughter. Just saying. Maybe we should get the 35er Canons from Mauser again. Less trouble internationally.

Graddler

SPAAG with 4 BK27 when?

PopeOh

The navy should get its shit together and give the [MLG27](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLG_27) the sensors and automation it needs to shoot down drones and other aerial targets.

Graddler

We have the companies in DE that can produce the ammo. Rheinmetall just has to pull the tools out of CH into one of their local facilities, the presses and lathes etc. Are usually not a problem.

Polygnom

Well, NATO (and germany) did not think we'd fight such a primitive war again, that is why Gepards where phased out. We literally thought Russia would be able to fight one or two classes better. The Gepards are *very effective* at what they were designed for, we just didn't think it would still be needed.

[deleted]

Gepards gonna Gepp.

MarschallVorwaertz

Germanys MANTIS is stationed since 2018 in Mali and before in Afghan. With those cheap Moped Drones the classic FLAK could have some kind of renaissance, if modernized and automated, like the Rheinmetall Skyranger or Skynex Systems.

hamburgertosser

Interesting point. The question i have then is: Is there a better time in history to transfer all 'surplus' Gepard and build an amunition facility for them? While we start to plan out the next best shit? * Ukraine: Yay :) * making room in German Depots and Maintainance: Yay :) * German Weapons and Armor Manufactureres: $.$ * German Military: I guess we can use an update here. And the same goes for Leopard 1 and 2 tbh. Just equip 1 Ukrainian Batallion with Leo2 and another 5 with Leo1. Like just let the Leo1 at the Belarus Border, and send a decent striking force of Leo2 where it actually matters. Im ranting :( But im so tired of excuses that GER wont be able to do its duty within NATO. But Russia is attacking NATO already, it just happens that Ukraine is the Battlefield. The Ukrainians said, nah thanks Russia, we look for a western approach to run our country. Thats the actual conflict. Putin willing to reel in the 'Brother' to become a historic figure in Russian Lore. There is no other ground-based fight going down for the next 50 years, if Russia is beaten here and now. USA-China-Taiwan is a naval War. Are we going to drive all Leopards to Almaty, to find out how they perform in the Gobi Desert? The worst thing that can happen to Germany is that Ukraine starts to get hooked on german MilTec, and have Europe and the US pay for it. But the Scholz and the german Government are on the Mission to bring peace by diplomacy. We sell a Port and a Company and an arm and a leg to keep China happy, while hoping that a new russia will send cheap Gas again. I'd take the NS1 and NS2 attacks as a temporary no from Russia. Only if we beg down and sell ourselfs that we can haf a little cheap gas through NS2, to the prices Russia commands - fuck it.

eypandabear

They were phased out mostly because they’re expensive to operate (including training cost).

Polygnom

They were too expensive for what they were offering, which was a capability not longer deemed critical. Gepards in the variant that was eventually phased out are very vulnerable against modern airforces. They wouldn't fare well e.g. against HARMS. But the Gepards we now delivered have a completely upgraded electronics package, which allow their integration into a wide array of other electronic systems and vastly increases their horizon and decouples them from their own radar. We did not refit our own gepards because we thought that against a modern airforce, this wasn't cost-effective, and used other systems instead. Well it turns out, against what the russians are throwing at it, Gepards are very cost-effective right now. but this wasn't the anticipated scenario.

RexLupie

Nope... we basically got rid of most of our land based aa systems for money reasons. Left is Ozelot for Jäger, Mantis for FOBs and Patriot for long range... ohh ans aquad based manpads

Kynxys

That's not true. They were just getting old. They were getting more expensive to maintain and run. At some point the assessment gets made to phase out a piece of hardware for something different. Newer replacements with greater capabilities were always going to fill the gap. The idea that this sort of weapon capability was not required is totally wrong. It was just not going (and is not going) to be the Gepard. The good thing for Ukraine is that they were still around so they could use them to excellent effect.

Thurak0

wiki agrees: > The last 94 of these remained in service until 2010 when they were gradually phased out until 2012 due to high maintenance costs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flakpanzer_Gepard But still the timing is very questionable. The age of the unmanned aerial drones was there or at least clear on the horizon already. The calculation to get rid of a (very) capable anti drone vehicle was just not clever. This is perhaps mostly hindsight (for example the Bayraktar had their first flight in 2014), but still...

France got one of these, Germany got one of these. I hope they make one for US, UK and Poland too, although these countries already sending a lot of stuff since the beginning. US: freedom fighter (jets) UK: yellow submarine Poland: winged hussars

WalkerBuldog

We already have one for Poland https://youtu.be/AnFwhSXxPXg

bipolarnotsober

Wait we gave Ukraine a yellow Submarine Or There's a submarine meme with the Beatles song?

retorz3

What I meant is that there should be one. (both given and a meme)

inflamesburn

UK got the first one actually: https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1539671779312033793

retorz3

How could I miss that one! Thank you very much for linking it!

inflamesburn

Np, I missed it too at the time, it didn't go viral. I just saw it when the French one was a big hit and someone posted the UK one in the replies.

nolok

> although these countries already sending a lot of stuff since the beginning So have France and Germany. UK already got one.

Kajetan_Olawski

What could be more "super"? More ammo for the Gepard cannons! Last info on the norwegian ammo source was, that these shells had to be adapted first to be recognized by the Gepards cannons as valid ammo. So the already delivered stock was sent back to Norway and Germany for further field testing. This was back in August. Does anyone has more info on the current status?

Stunning_Ride_220

There are currently a lot of arguments with switzerland as they do not approve the delivery of the ones produced there.

krummulus

Only that the first round of testing failed. Nothing further has been published, but I'm hoping it's just a matter of time until Nammo gets it right

Kajetan_Olawski

Thank you!

Liechtenstein is the perfect man for this - the Stasi tried to get him as an "[unofficial collaborator](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unofficial_collaborator)" in the 80s in the DDR/GDR. There was also a recent interview with him: > *Will the retouched peace dove remain your only statement on the Ukraine war?* > I think it's a better statement than saying "we're getting some missiles now because armament is the only thing we can do for peace". It's not just the dove either, there's also the lyric "Verachtendste Abrechnung" by Arno Holz on the album. That ends with the line "Pfui, mein Hammer singt, dein feiges, feiles, fades, faul, verjauchtes, leeres Hirn bleibt unzerschmettert." That's a very stark lyric, "the earth roars, on foaming, neighing, dashing stallions", it's about warmongering, revenge and destruction - and then the beast remains unshattered at the end. I see a play like this as a way of responding to war. That's all I can contribute. > *You prefer to stay metaphorical...* > Yes, because I am an artist. By the way, I think that - contrary to what was postulated in the Corona period - artists are now very systemically relevant in times of war. Because that's where the impulses for peace come from. You need a vision of what peace is and how we want to live in the future. We artists are responsible for imagining a peace. How do we deal with the things that make our lives worth living? Do we want to dwell on destroying, killing and cheating, or is there something else beyond the nastiness of this world? - At this point I have always been an escapist and like to invent things that make life worth living. So that you still know what it's all about in the end on this planet. Translated with DeepL from https://www.planet-interview.de/interviews/friedrich-liechtenstein/52849/ (No time to translate myself, but it's actually pretty impressive how good DeepL has become...)

MelCharly95

Super please - made me choke on my coffee, thank you 🙏🏼

AndorianBlues

I guess they really have been training their PR information/psych/meme warfare since the Crimea occupation. It has worked wonders since "fuck you Russian Warship" and "we need ammo, not a lift", and calling out indivudual EU leaders on Twitter.

AutoModerator

Russian Warship fucked itself. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ukraine) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Tough-Training2563

What you all are forgetting - there is certain history between Ger and Rus, and we all, who grew up during the soviet times had been fed with mothers milk about heroic fight against germans - there is symbolism in genes of russians and post-soviets where whatever "german-ish" will definitely be rising contr-reaction; and german tanks - that was symbol nr1; Modern Ger, unfortunately has all the rights to be very careful. But, what they can do - sell those tanks to Nor, name them Viking and deal is done - vikings have no collective symbolism in russian dna.

[deleted]

Yes, this is one of the defining reasons for German hesitance. Sounds silly and hard to understand to people from third countries, but German tanks have a super strong symbolism. We may approach the point though where nobody cares enough anymore.

eypandabear

> vikings have no collective symbolism in russian dna I know this isn’t what you mean but I couldn’t resist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rurik_dynasty There is a Yale lecture series on Ukrainian history on YouTube and much of the early bits are pulled from Icelandic sagas. It’s also why many East Slavic names have a Norse equivalent: Volodymyr/Valdamarr, Olga/Helga, etc.

ChornWork2

> had been fed with mothers milk about heroic fight against germans but glossed over the part where the soviets allied with nazi germany in order for europe to get conquered...

Gammelpreiss

I suspect that this very fact is the major reason why Ukraine is so keen to get german equipment and even started painting crosses as their main identity marking?

potato_in_an_ass

Or a cross is easy to identify from a distance and is hard to confuse with a z, reducing friendly fire incidents? And Germans make really good stuff and are the biggest economy in Europe?

tweek-in-a-box

Not sure I understand what you're saying. Imo op is pointing out that having a modern German MBT on the battlefield can be used by Russian propaganda to drum up support "see we told you there's Nazis in Ukraine". But I guess since Ukraine MoD is asking for it they are not as concerned.

Grovers_HxC

Haha “Super Please”

spixt

Anyone know why the U.S. isn't talking about sending ~M2~ M1 tanks to Ukraine? I remember years ago how they had a problem of having just too many tanks mothballed, and due to political reasons they could not stop or slow down production. I sure hope the U.S. are secretly training a few hundred Ukranians on how to operate and maintain those tanks...

potato_in_an_ass

The Abrams is the obvious choice despite what Reddit will say about gas turbines (Ukraine operates captured t80s with turbines), and the reason at this point is political will. It deserves to be said plainly. There are heaps of them available because the US keeps building them to make sure the production line is intact in case there is a war. A small number would provide a spearhead for punching through hardened positions with vastly improved crew survivability, without straining logistics. Training for field level maintenance is very doable, and anything more complicated can be sent to Poland and rotated with a reserve maintained there. It's politics, not technical feasibility holding it back.

ChornWork2

> There are heaps of them available because Also worth noting that the marines prematurely pulled hundreds of m1s that were in service with the USMC because of a fundamental change in strategy around force composition. Imagine some may have gone to US army or whatever, but certainly added in practice to the number of truly surplus tanks US has.

Cloaked42m

If you are talking about M1A2s or M1A1 Abrams tanks there are a handful of issues there. Training, in part. There's an extra seat for loaders. How much use they'd be (which comes back to training in mobile operations, Abrams go zoom zoom, but are still just fat targets without Infantry protection). Ukrainian Generals can answer that one though. Politics and Optics. Abrams showing up on the battlefield would read, politically, as a giant escalation. Abrams showing up on the battlefield and burning would be a huge propaganda win for Russia. God forbid one got captured for any reason. Europe can sorta kinda get away with it. Leopards have a lot of the same capabilities without the same level of optic issues. Same issues exist, just not on the same tier as every couch sitter in the world screaming about "American Involvement!!!"

TheSpiffingGerman

The "optic issues" are even greater for Germany. German Tanks destroyed by Russia - THE propaganda for Putin and his comparisons to WW2.

[deleted]

Leopard has way worse optics. German tanks have a super deep symbolism in Russia. American ones do not. Contrary to the US Germany also does not have its own nuclear umbrella. I do not see how we get away easier. Add to that that the US has 2000 + Abrams stored, almost ready for shipping.

hughk

If you send a tank and don't want it to quickly fail, you need parts plus trained maintenance crews. Modern tanks are complicated. The US has one of the best logistics operations around so it has no problem deploying modern tanks anywhere in the world. Ukrainians would have to be able to do the maintenance themselves. They are good engineers but they would need training. Maintenance is rather harder than driving the things.

Aiass

Free the Leopards!

Stunning_Ride_220

Sadly there isn't a weapon system called Kraken which can be Unleashed.

ForeignStrangeness

Nooo! They are going to eat your faces! It would be much better to: Unleash the Archers! Why have the archers been leashed in the first place?

schnokobaer

Lmao

FuriousFurryFisting

Germany will not be the first country to deliver western main battle tanks. The current Government is not bold enough. The only chance I see is if another country with a substantial amount of Leo2 makes the first move and asks Germany for export approval and a contribution of tanks.

krummulus

Only way it would be if NATO decided that a joined effort for Leo 2 officially supported by the US was happening. Then germany could be first.

Maeglin75

That is also the only way to get enough Leo2 to equip a tank battalion. Germany alone doesn't have enough tanks to spare.

Hessi2006

There is a reason why the big cat is sometimes called Euroleopard, because of the many nations in europe using it. They should come together, discuss and in a joint statement decide to supply a relevant number (50+) Leopards, thus creating a precedent and removing the pressure from a single country making that move first.

rapaxus

Problem there is a metric ton of Leopard variants, all with different "stuff" in it. A4 to 7, having minor modifications. For example the A4 is available in a Swedish, Finnish, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Turkish and Canadian variants (only including countries that actually would send tanks, so e.g. no Swiss, Indonesians, etc.). All these tanks have differences, from different radios, optics, internal layouts, optics, reactive armour, etc. And that are just the A4 variants, there are far more than that just in Europe. Meanwhile the US with their Abrams has some variants, but they all are quite similar and really, there are only M1A1's, M1A2's, M1A1SA, M1A2 SEPv2 and M1A2C variants. And the US has enough in storage that they will likely only send one variant (e.g. 200 M1A2 SEPv2s for example, if the US is generous). The best solution for the Leopards would be to just send one specific version (e.g. 100 German A6's) and Germany then gets smaller amounts from the various nations that also have A6's (e.g. Finland, Portugal, Greece, Canada) which they then can refit to German standards, so that at the end all the nations involved gave about the same number of tanks to Ukraine, but with the tanks Ukraine receives all being in one universal pattern. But that would require incredible cooperation and teamwork between the nations. But I don't think that sending Leopard 1's is really that helpful, because outside of those upgraded to have thermals, they are really on par or worse than modern T-72 variants. Far better and efficient in such a situation to just help upgrade Ukrainian T-72s with e.g. thermals (which shouldn't be too hard since there is knowledge of how to do it in Europe, you just need thermals to fit in them).

Maeglin75

100 Leopard 2A6 would be nearly all the Bundeswehr has currently operational (plus ca. 20 2A7/2A7V). The upgrades of the replacement tanks would take several years (current schedule for the upgrades from 2A6 to 2A7V is 2026) and in that time Germany would be effectively disarmed. The Bundeswehr wouldn't be able to fulfill its NATO obligations anymore (especially guarding the Lithuanian border to Belarus) and even more important, it would be very difficult to train new and existing crews on Leo2. The combat readiness of the core of the Bundeswehr would be in ruins for many years. (It's already bad enough.) I know, many on Reddit don't really see a problem with that, but I'm sure the NATO and Bundeswehr leadership sees this differently and the German government just can't do that without betraying their oath to protect the country and its people. Germany is no military power. Our decades long underfunded army has very little of anything, especially heavy equipment. If the goal is that a single country gives a large number (50-100) of a single Leo2 variant to Ukraine, than maybe Poland or Turkey could do that from their much larger Leo2 fleets. Germany not so much.

Gizmooo111

Very nice :) I really hope that Leopards will be send in the near future. We will see.

sketchysalesguy

Super leopard, super please ;)

TheAltToYourF4

Super bitteschön. And if it were up to the people, you would already have gotten the Leo2.

TheSpiffingGerman

Olaf gib MBT!

hyperdude321

Man ukraine with Leopard 2's, F-15/16s, and HIMARs would be the glow up of the century.

ProgySuperNova

Let all the cats into Ukraine!

calmrelax

Thank you, the people of Germany!

alex137a1

And where's ATACMS? We really need them because iran will soon send its LRMs to moscovia. ***Guys I know Germany doesn't have these, this is for the US***

DescendantofDodos

Germany does not use or have any ATACMS, only the "regular" missiles for HIMARS/M270/MARS2 launchers, which they are already supplying.

VR_Bummser

Only the US have ATACMS, Germany has only GLMRS for MARS / HIMARS /M270 and those were provided.

DescendantofDodos

Minor nitpick: there are several countries besides the US that have ATACMS, like Qatar, but even if any of those would be willing, the deal would still have to be approved by the US, though in the end it does not really make much difference. Ukraine will get those types of missiles only after the US agrees.

Stunning_Ride_220

Would be a weird twist if they send the missiles to moscovia and not just deliver them :-P
