Funny story:
My Father in Law used to call me by a name that wasn't what I was using at the time because it was easier to remember.
Part of my name is shared with the town I grew up in, so he called me by the name of the next town south on the freeway 😅
Lovely man, he just had a weird way of remembering people 🤣.
I've never heard is used for anything other than a toilet, though I've also never seen it spelled "jawn." Definitely pronounced that way though.
Edit: This a Philly thing? Might be on the wrong side of the state
You’re thinking of “John” which is not the same as “Jawn.” John is oft used as a standin for toilet. Jawn is Philly/East Coast slang for any unnamed object, kinda just means “thing.” Didn’t know about this until a few years ago as I am also on the wrong side of the state :p
My cousin calls me Ralphie lol. Ralphie is not my name. It is not Ralph either. My name doesn’t even have an R in it until halfway through my middle name! I do not understand why he picked this, but it seems to be a thing that some guys just do? But hey, at least he isn’t using my deadname!
Oh gosh I know that situation... My dad refuses to call me Olivia cause he knew an Olivia once... And he suggested my deadname with the an a instead of o as a last character and let me tell you: that doesn't work at all.
Edit: okay I meant the name he said doesn't work like this XD
I found out my deadname has a female version in japan Akeno. I dont mind my deadname but I still would like to be perceived as a woman instead of "man -uuuh woman" in my family
My mom keeps suggesting other names since she only knows one person with my chosen name and apparently they were not a nice person. Not that id trust my moms opinion on a person ever
Tone indicators are amazing, but they also confuse me sometimes. There are also a lot of them that are used quite rarely, and that I don't really understand. I love /s, /j, /hj, /srs and /gen but a lot of the others I feel aren't usually necessary or just kind of obvious.
[I use this list a lot](https://tonetags.carrd.co/#masterlist), it's very nice for remembering them all
I have the opposite problem with a friend. Her egg cracked, but I already know like, 7 people with the name she picked. 4 of those 7 are in our extended circle, so now whenever someone mentions her name without context we all have to puzzle even harder over which one they mean.
There should be a dating app called something like
"The Luna-Kai Mix'n'Match"
I'm tired of these boring studies on trans people and regret rates and this and that. Give me the study on chosen names and the top 10 ranked by number xD
I'm a firm believer in having as many true names as you damn desire. Yeah, I've only got one legal name, but I was born with two and changed them both - might as well just collect a few more!
Gotta keep the fae on their toes somehow...
My middle name is my dad’s first name and I’ve always liked my initials, so I was trying to find a way to keep them. When I finally came across a female version of it, I was floored, because all it does is add -*ana* at the end of it and it’s pretty unique, imo.
So I’ve decided, if, when I come out to him, he accepts me and I don’t lament sharing a name with him, I’m gonna go with this: [As cheesy and random as this name personality breakdown thingy is, I really kinda like it..](https://myfirstname.rocks/baby-names/keithana)
If, on the other hand, he winds up disowning me, I’ve decided to go with a variant of my mom’s first name as my middle, since she’s already said she’d love and support me no matter what I decide. My first name choices will also be dependent upon which middle name I go with, so in a way, when I come out to him, he still gets a chance to pick my name; he’s the deciding factor of whether I keep ‘his name’ or cut ties with it.
Kinda the same here, my mom refuses to call me by my chosen name (even tho it is now my legal name) and she said it would be easier for her if I just switched to the feminine version of my old name, but I just can’t it’s to similar to my old one and it bothers me to be called anything that reminds me of my old name
LOL, my dad did something similar.
I first changed my name when I was 17, and was in my "nonbinary bargaining phase" (as I have seen it described somewhere). It was very stereotypical nonbinary type name, and did NOT sound local at all (norwegian)
Time passes, I feel more certain of my gender, have spent some time quietly trying to find a name that fits, think I might finally got it
So I'm almost 25, and on my way to get top surgery with my dad as support. I cautiously mentions that I'm thinking about changing my name again, and before I have the chance to say what name I'm thinking about, he interrupts me to say "Oh god, please pick something norwegian this time."
Luckily my new name is very norwegian (I have a twin, and it was VERY clear that we were not named by the same people for a while. So I wanted a name that sorta matched him). I guess he thought that the name I chose sounded stupid, but it made me happy, so he just kept quiet about it and used it, and did his best to make sure other people used it as well. But he was glad when I changed it to my new one (this one sounds like something my parents might have chosen)
I had to Google that one😅. So, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy? Are there like a bunch of different shows and movies? I know it's a book originally, right?😅
Marvin the Paranoid Android is a character from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but you wouldn't catch him smiling lol; his whole character shtick is that he's horribly depressed.
Hitchhiker's Guide originally started out as a radio series. But it has definitely had a lot of adaptations. In the introduction to the omnibus of the first 5 books, Douglas Adams writes, "The *Guide* has appeared in so many forms—books, radio, a television series, records and soon to be a major motion picture—each time with a different story line that even its most acute followers have become baffled at times." (He died in 2001, the movie came out in 2005. I liked it personally but that's not necessarily a popular opinion lol)
I myself haven't listened to the original radio series, but I have read all the books (except for *And Another Thing...*, written by Eoin Colfer after Adams' death). I definitely recommend the books, they're great.
That's why it was so confusing!! 😆People sometimes bring up the guide, but every time, it's like a different thing. I thought it was just a book or short story that got adapted into a movie😅. I think I saw some of the radio plays on YouTube , but I never listened to them because I thought they just took the audio from the movie/TV show. I know what I'll listen to while I'm cooking dinner next😁
I enjoyed the movie, and I started with the radio series when it was played as a weekly serial on NPR. Zaphod's other head was much more watchable in the movie than in the TV version. The Heart of Gold not looking like a running shoe was a disappointment though.
The differences between versions kept each a fresh new thing. Having started with the radio version, I did get the benefit of having their voices. The movie wasn't great, but I enjoyed it more when I dropped expectations of it repeating the other versions.
>The movie wasn't great, but I enjoyed it more when I dropped expectations of it repeating the other versions.
Agreed. I didn't love it the first time, but I've enjoyed it the other couple times I watched it. I still get that catchyass song stuck in my head. 🎶 [So long and thanks for all the fish!](https://youtu.be/N_dUmDBfp6k) 🎶
**MARVIN!**
It’s been so long since I’ve played titanfall so I didn’t recognize the reference at first. That being said the clan I made for my friends and I in titanfall 2 was Marvin’s Good Boi Brigade and we all had the dog banner and it was amazing, so thanks for reminding me!
Marvin, the paranoid android, in HHGTG "would like you to know (he's) feeling very depressed." In his millions of years existence smiling was't a descriptor for him.
Yeah, my parents have been telling us for years what our names would have been if we’d been born male. Mine IS basically the masculine version of my deadname but because I’ve been fantasizing about having that name for as long as I can remember, it felt natural to slip into it:) still wanna add a solid middle name tho!
My parents just deadname me tho lol
They’d never have told me what I’d have been named if I asked after coming out hahahaa😭😭😭
NGL he kinda right, why would you choose Marvin instead of shit like Optimus Prime, if you're gonna change your name change it to something raw as hell
Could be worse for names, like non-binary people. We're all named after whatever we were looking at when we realized we're non-binary.
Gear, Laser, Trench, Leaf...
/s, obviously
My parents were the same way at first. Then they eventually came around.
Ask them if they believe atoms or germs exist lol.. they probably haven't seen any of them either but it doesn't mean they don't exist >.<
THIS REMINDS ME OF A TIME BACK IN MY BABY TRANSMASC DAYS. I TRIED TO GO BY MARC, BUT MY STEPDAD JUST WENT "absolutely not marc is an awful name" AND WE NEVER SPOKE ABOUT IT AGAIN.
Ok that sucks, but I kinda have to admire how based that is. "Yeah, I support and accept you, but that name tho?? That'll take some time to accept, sorry fam"
For me it was "I support you.. but don't expect me to call you your preferred name. You'll always be xxx (dead name) to me".
From both my sister and mom.
Mom is definitely more supportive, but they both still refuse to use my name. Not just that, but I also sort of pass I think, so they pretty much out me.. 😅
I remember watching Marvin once as a kid. I forget if it was a proper show or a special.
Okay looking it up it was a special called *Marvin, Baby of the Year*.
True, but if OP wasn't his dad's son, he would have no control over his name and he'd have to live with it. Parents deserve no control over their children's names and lives.
Go with it anyway, it's your name, fudge what anyone else thinks.
The Sylvester thing sounds like it was a joke, which is pretty shitty of him.
I asked my mum the same thing and she said some bs name, then eventually admitted she'd never even thought about it, so that might be your dad's case, too.
Op, Marvin is a fine name for a young man such as yourself ☺️
We’ve had [a lot ](https://www.ranker.com/list/famous-people-named-marvin/reference) of fine people named Marvin. It’ll be nice to have one more.
Exactly what my friend did he argued that since my name is gender neutral I shouldn't change it and has put no effort into gendering me or using my preferred name
I know the situation is shitty specially if real but there is some funny meme there like "sure i actually support you wholely, but please don't call yourself [silly name] dude"
This is relatable. When I chose my name, I sat with it for weeks before telling my partner. He got upset because his nephew has the same name with a different spelling. I didn't remember that and had already decided. It was my decision to make anyway and it was my great-grandfather's middle name. It's all good now, though, thankfully
that happened with a friend but he quickly adapted, he still thinks my name is weird but he uses it and apologizes when he gets it wrong
im hoping your dad does the same :)
edit: also, Marvin ist a stupid name imo. i like it :)
Hahaha ouch sorry ...that's hilarious though. Sounds like he's a good supportive dad no matter who you are, and that's what really matters. He's even already begun hazing you like a guy 😅 ... get ready for a lot more of that, king.
“If your gender doesn’t align with the one we thought you had, that’s for you to figure out but I get a say in what name you use so you don’t screw it up.”
This sounds like my mom, when I first came out she said that she would always support me, but now that I changed my name and started HRT and she sees that I’m serious about it she constantly missgenders and dead name me, and when I asked her why she said “I can’t treat you like a girl cause I don’t see you as one and I can’t use your new name cause I don’t like it and it sounds racist” 0_0, my name is Ariana which is a really comum name in my country, no, it has nothing to do with the nazis -_-
Same lol, my dad just calls me John instead, which was incredibly confusing to other people
Idk just say he calls you by your middle name or smth
Fucking wild!! Has he ever explained this? I’m horrified omg
On the bright side I bet you could make a killer standup comedy set about it
Now I want to hear this
I forgot exactly what it’s called but I love your tag. BLT is a fantastic way of abbreviating your identity lmaooo
It’s a flair, and thank you 😊
It’d be a brilliant bit
He just thinks it's easier to remember. At least he's not deadnaming I guess?
Funny story: My Father in Law used to call me by a name that wasn't what I was using at the time because it was easier to remember. Part of my name is shared with the town I grew up in, so he called me by the name of the next town south on the freeway 😅 Lovely man, he just had a weird way of remembering people 🤣.
Uh, he from PA by chance? You sure he's not calling you a jawn?
I assume PA is somewhere in America? Cuz we aint from there
PA is Pennsylvania. Jawn = dialect for john, meaning toilet.
Jawn is just a generic standin for an unnamed object, place or person, it's not specifically for toilets or even explicitly derogatory.
I figured it was the yinzer spelling or something 😅 Ex. "red up around the jawn in the basement" 😂
Mostly Philly but I've heard it all over SE PA.
A John is also a man who hires prostitutes btw
my grandad and my uncle call each other john. my aunt genuinely thought my grandads name was john for a while
My cousin calls me Ralphie lol. Ralphie is not my name. It is not Ralph either. My name doesn’t even have an R in it until halfway through my middle name! I do not understand why he picked this, but it seems to be a thing that some guys just do? But hey, at least he isn’t using my deadname!
Just be called 'the martian'
That was his exact reaction when I told him what I wanted to be called
Knew it. That woulda been my dad too
Dad answer fr fr
fr fr fr
Honestly? that was my first thought. Is he Gen X, too?
Your dad’s right sorry
Or "the paranoid android"
Oh gosh I know that situation... My dad refuses to call me Olivia cause he knew an Olivia once... And he suggested my deadname with the an a instead of o as a last character and let me tell you: that doesn't work at all. My mom keeps suggesting other names since she only knows one person with my chosen name and apparently they were not a nice person. Not that id trust my moms opinion on a person ever
I feel your mom on that one, but it’s still not her choice lol. She gets to make new associations with the name! /lh
/lh?
I think it's a tone indicator for "light hearted".
Tone indicators are amazing, but they also confuse me sometimes. There are also a lot of them that are used quite rarely, and that I don't really understand. Username checks out.
That's hilarious from the outside, but I can imagine how frustrating/confusing it could be irl.
There should be a dating app called something like "The Luna-Kai Mix'n'Match" I'm tired of these boring studies on trans people and regret rates and this and that. Give me the study on chosen names and the top 10 ranked by number xD
Tell her that now she knows two.
slightly diff, but im transmasc, and she keeps being like "maybe ur a demigirl." or "no, your definitely genderfae" its like "..."
I'm picturing something totally nonsensical like steven-a or bill-a
I'm going with Ernesto, Ernesta.
Leonarda
Ernestoa
Bill-a is just Billie said with a New Yorker accent.
*instead of o* though, it works with nearly all names from latin. Leo→Lea, Mario→Maria, Hugo→Huga, Cosmo→Cosma, etc
There are no people called Huga or Cosma though, and it sounds pretry bad
there was a character named Madame Cosma in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so there's that
My dad dated an Emily like a billion years ago and he struggled because of it and like,, it's not. My fault you dated half the alpahabet
maria?
What if their name was Mo “This is my daughter, Ma”
I think the name Moe would become Mae which is actually a pretty name
Mae is a lovely name! Much better than Ma or Moa 😅
There's a weird fuckin cat outside
Every time I hear or read "Ma" all I can think of is that video with the strange cat
Lolll yes, I think someone else made a comment about that too
When I came out my mom was just like “well it wasn’t what I would have picked, but whatever”
I kinda have the same problem, I got a different name now, but I really wanted to be named Erwin (not I only use that name online)
I'm a firm believer in having as many true names as you damn desire. Yeah, I've only got one legal name, but I was born with two and changed them both - might as well just collect a few more! Gotta keep the fae on their toes somehow...
Hell yeah! That’s the way to go!!! Dark’ness Raven Dementia Way knew where it was AT😂😭😭😭
But I do have a names collection that’s a few miles long💀
All part of Erwin’s failsafe plan.
My middle name is my dad’s first name and I’ve always liked my initials, so I was trying to find a way to keep them. When I finally came across a female version of it, I was floored, because all it does is add -*ana* at the end of it and it’s pretty unique, imo. I'm guessing it was pickelo.
Kinda the same here, my mom refuses to call me by my chosen name (even tho it is now my legal name) and she said it would be easier for her if I just switched to the feminine version of my old name, but I just can’t it’s to similar to my old one and it bothers me to be called anything that reminds me of my old name
Nice to meet you, Otta.
Mine said the same thing, I chose the name Stefan 🥶
Yo, Stefan is an awesome name!
stefan is just stephen for posh people
meanwhile "istvan" ok but in fairness, stefan is an awesome name
Nah, it's Stephen for french people.
I am polish lmao
Or for European people 😅 not everyone is American /nm
Hello brother
Bro chose of of the hardest going greek names 🥶
Tbh? Best kind of asshole support.
reminds me of that trueoffmychest post that was like "my friend came out as trans, and i support her, but fucking gertrude? really?"
LOL, my dad did something similar. I first changed my name when I was 17, and was in my "nonbinary bargaining phase" (as I have seen it described somewhere). My mom litterally refuses to call me Brianna because it isn't Norwegian enough.
Getting my family to switch to Espen was very easy compared to when I was 17
you can always ask him what he would've called you if you were born male
He suggested I go by Sylvester instead, so name advice from him is definitely off the table
It's like the only names available to you are from the Looney Tunes lol.
Ngl, when I hear Marvin, my mind immediately conjures up a small Martian dressed like a roman soldier 😅
Ngl, when I hear Marvin, my mind immediately conjures up a smiling robot :>

Wait, *that's a thing*!? **I was talking about Titanfall**
**MARVIN!** It’s been so long since I’ve played titanfall so I didn’t recognize the reference at first. That being said the clan I made for my friends and I in titanfall 2 was Marvin’s Good Boi Brigade and we all had the dog banner and it was amazing, so thanks for reminding me!
Sorry😆 I just googled Marvin robot and all the results were hitchhikers guide to the galaxy😆😆😅
Marvin, the paranoid android, in HHGTG "would like you to know (he's) feeling very depressed." In his millions of years existence smiling was't a descriptor for him.
Ngl, when I hear marvin my mind immediately thinks of captain underpants
Name sisters😁
I auto-shorten it to Marv and think of a guy with a brick imprint on his face.
Omfg why did I only just now realize Marvin the Martian is dressed Roman because of Mars the god
Power move: go by foghorn leghorn
"now pa I say I say pa"
Gossamer is a pretty fire name, though.
But with that, you get one of the coolest name shortenings available, Sly.
I mean, Sylvester is quite badass ngl
fuckin sylveon lol can you ask him for any other name like anything will work better than that
SYLVESTER LMAO?!?! Intolerant in all the right ways, I s'pose.
Just name yourself Rocky at that point, maybe talk in a slurred manner
I much prefer the name “Bullwinkle” Oh. Different “Rocky”
Wait, so he had an issue with Marvin because it made him think of a cartoon, but not with Sylvester? Suffering succotash!
Nothing for it, embrace Tweety.
Sylvester is a cat's name
A cat or a Martian
sylvie's a good name tho :(
Not for a trans guy generally-
Yeah, my parents have been telling us for years what our names would have been if we’d been born male. Mine IS basically the masculine version of my deadname but because I’ve been fantasizing about having that name for as long as I can remember, it felt natural to slip into it:) still wanna add a solid middle name tho! Chaotic Good
perhaps lawful evil
NGL he kinda right, why would you choose Marvin instead of shit like Optimus Prime, if you're gonna change your name change it to something raw as hell
clone trooper names are a goldmine for that shit
Could be worse for names, like non-binary people. We're all named after whatever we were looking at when we realized we're non-binary. Gear, Laser, Trench, Leaf... /s, obviously
I mean it's not wrong, I was looking at a periodic table. At the element Silver. That's my name now.
So... there was a use after all...
Exactly, that's why my name is Tumblr
💀💀💀
Gear kinda reminds me of Gage, which is actually a pretty cool name
What if you’re looking at the fae? Do you accidentally steal *their* name?
My sister spent months trying to convince me that I couldn't be named Bee, that it isn't a real name and that it's an insect.
Ayy my mom tried that with my name cause it's technically a nick name and not a professional name
[удалено]
Yee
I mean Marvin is a boomer era name so yes right in a way. But fuck what do I know my names Pnut.
Why is Ur name pnut?
They don't like Electronic Arts.
Pnut like in ["Pnut Pnut"](https://youtu.be/bnmAi53H520)???
No it's peanut but I do sometimes get called pnoot not as a meme.
I wish my parents were worried over the name I was using :( My parents don't "believe trans people exist"
Parents have a responsibility to make sure their kids names don't get them bullied so in a weird dad way this is cute
Tell that to the parents naming their kids “Kayteghlyiaen.” (Katelyn)
Ok that sucks, but I kinda have to admire how based that is. "Yeah, I support and accept you, but that name tho?? That'll take some time to accept, sorry fam"
For me it was "I support you.. but don't expect me to call you your preferred name. You'll always be xxx (dead name) to me". From both my sister and mom. Mom is definitely more supportive, but they both still refuse to use my name. Not just that, but I also sort of pass I think, so they pretty much out me.. 😅
That’s beyond fucked up, you need to set a hard boundary, let them know you are still the same person but cannot call you by your old name.
I remember watching Marvin once as a kid. I forget if it was a proper show or a special. Okay looking it up it was a special called *Marvin, Baby of the Year*.
Supportive but judgemental is really what we all need. It could be worse though. You could be a Fergus or a Brian.
Or you could be a Kevin. It hardly bears thinking about.
Task failed successfully?
See my name originally got compared to the dolphin from Clearwater, but now winter the dolphin is dead so I came out on top
Dad says trans rights but not Marvin rights 😔
Sorry that happened my mom called my name stupid and it kinda broke me
I had to change my name because my parents hated it
My mother said my name sounds like "puna." Puna is slang for the female genitalia. My name is Rúna, from Richárd (dead)
Sounds more like Rune to me, great name!
Well, he could call you Marv, or just acknowledge the fact that he can't choose someone else's name and suck it up. His choice.
To be fair, 99% of the names in the world *are* chosen by parents.
True, but if OP wasn't his dad's son, he would have no control over his name and he'd have to live with it. Parents deserve no control over their children's names and lives.

Well you know what? That’s what I am, so the name suits me perfectly
Go with it anyway, it's your name, fudge what anyone else thinks. The Sylvester thing sounds like it was a joke, which is pretty shitty of him. I asked my mum the same thing and she said some bs name, then eventually admitted she'd never even thought about it, so that might be your dad's case, too.
self actualization and choosing a name is a beautiful process and i will never ever bash that but marvin makes me laugh im sorry doc
To be fair, very few names scream “kick me” energy more than marvin
Op, Marvin is a fine name for a young man such as yourself ☺️ We’ve had [a lot ](https://www.ranker.com/list/famous-people-named-marvin/reference) of fine people named Marvin. It’ll be nice to have one more.
It's probably from a place of love. It'd be like coming out as gay and everyone supports you but not your terrible taste in partners!
😂😂
You got to pick you a whole new name and you chose Marvin? /s
Fr though why do y'all name yourselves dorky names like Hubert or Nigel when you can name yourself something cool like xXx_TheRizzler3000_xXx
Exactly what my friend did he argued that since my name is gender neutral I shouldn't change it and has put no effort into gendering me or using my preferred name
Marvin from Marvin’s marvellous mechanical museum??? Tally Hall reference???
Truly an awesome album, based music taste
B)
I know the situation is shitty specially if real but there is some funny meme there like "sure i actually support you wholely, but please don't call yourself [silly name] dude"
My mom did the same😭 she hates both my new names, I even gave her a choise to choose a second name for me, but she refused
Least they didn't say "well you should let me name you since you're my kid" like my mom did
gotta be honest dude. hes right /lighthearted
my mom thinks claire is an old person name
Yup. My mom suggested I pick a different name "that didn't sound like something a stripper would be named" and I basically told her to fuck off.
I have a coworker named Marvin, it's not that weird
My Mom: you cannot have this many middle names Me, holding Clark and Aldous: AAAAAAAAAAA
At least he’s honest
marvelous mechanical museum-
Marvin is a really cool name!
This is relatable. When I chose my name, I sat with it for weeks before telling my partner. He got upset because his nephew has the same name with a different spelling. I didn't remember that and had already decided. It was my decision to make anyway and it was my great-grandfather's middle name. It's all good now, though, thankfully
that happened with a friend but he quickly adapted, he still thinks my name is weird but he uses it and apologizes when he gets it wrong im hoping your dad does the same :) edit: also, Marvin ist a stupid name imo. i like it :)
Duuuuuude, *my* name is Marvin. I have never felt so hit In the heart by a post before. 😂
Being trans doesn't excuse poor taste Like that one girl wanting to be named Mildred
My dad told me I couldn’t call myself Charlie because it “sounds like the name of a kid who eats paste”
I think Marvin is a great name.
Marvin is a stupid name, not tryna judge but you could choose literally ANY name
nah bro im with your dad on this one
Hahaha ouch sorry ...that's hilarious though. Sounds like he's a good supportive dad no matter who you are, and that's what really matters. He's even already begun hazing you like a guy 😅 ... get ready for a lot more of that, king.
“If your gender doesn’t align with the one we thought you had, that’s for you to figure out but I get a say in what name you use so you don’t screw it up.”
This sounds like my mom, when I first came out she said that she would always support me, but now that I changed my name and started HRT and she sees that I’m serious about it she constantly missgenders and dead name me, and when I asked her why she said “I can’t treat you like a girl cause I don’t see you as one and I can’t use your new name cause I don’t like it and it sounds racist” 0_0, my name is Ariana which is a really comum name in my country, no, it has nothing to do with the nazis -_-
Supportive but still criticising your life decisions...parents xD
Whelp, time to constantly quote Marvin from Hitchhiker's Guide out of spite.
My mom is doing the same thing to me. She hates the name "Sophia" and has recently started calling me "Sofa" as an alternative.
