Obviously, lack of information and the information available coming in the form of emotional social media posts has been a sour note on this whole saga.
Stepping back, I'm glad that the Timbers made a clear-headed decision about the risks of a new contract for Blanco. He deserves one. But it has to be right. And Blanco was understandably disappointed by the offer on the table. It's good that he was allowed to survey the field and evaluate his options with that offer still on the table. I hope that he comes back focused.

This. If we operate on the assumption that Blanco signed a team-friendly deal, everyone should be ecstatic from a Timbers-centric standpoint. We got Blanco and flexibility to make additional moves, the best of both worlds.
And getting ink on paper for this gives us a precise understanding of our budget for - hopefully - a centerback lol
It's more likely it gives us the flexibility for a centerback *next season*, but I share your same hope.
Target two more attackers with the YDP and U22. Hopefully have some TAM left over to find us a central defender.
Am I looking at this wrong, or are we already pretty full in attack? If Mora or Neizgoda is always up top, that leaves 3 attacking spots for Blanco, Asprilla, Yimmy, Moreno, Polo, and Loria. I wasn't anticipating any more attacking players this year unless something goes horribly wrong. I would love to see one of those spots used on young CB that can challenge for starting minutes. Even if they're not fully ready this year, they can integrate with the team and be completely ready for next year.
Depth is a mirage. Every year, we say we have depth until we don’t. If playing time is an issue, you send the younger guys down to T2.
Well, we definitely don't have depth in the back though
Understood, but if Blanco's deal uses all the TAM, we only have a YDP and U22 spot open (apart from smaller deals for potential draft picks/Bahachille). As we found out last season, those spots probably aren't going to be used on defenders.
I hear you there. It just feels like the schedule is finally way less congested. No CCL, and way fewer midweek games. It feels like it could actually be a struggle to get minutes to guys like Loria. And this also assumes that Williamson isn't taking one of those 3 spots when he's fit. If Ayala performs well, we'll have an equally good problem on our hands with Chara, Ayala, Williamson, and Paredes vying for 2 starting positions.
All told, you're probably more right than I am. I suppose I just wouldn't be surprised if we don't sign any more attackers until the summer window.
Yeah, I don't think we will either. But I bet both the YDP and U22 are attackers in the summer. It's a better window for that kind of talent.
> unless something goes horribly wrong
Dammit, can you not?
LOL, fair enough. I meant more from a chemistry, quality soccer standpoint. But I should not tempt the soccer gods like that.
How dare you forget Blake Motherfuckin Bodily
(Also Ikoba for more forward depth)
Man, the kit tease was so good it even got Blanco back.
We’ve gotten so much news recently I feel like I need to be pinched to make sure I’m not dreaming
What a day!
> All signs point to a return to Portland, but man, Blanco's really gotta read the writing on the wall.
Someone saw the writing on the wall I think.
[He's at the airport rn btw](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FKoJVcVVUAE2XMJ?format=jpg&name=large)
His instagram doesn't seem to show anything about the airport.
Check the link again :)
Ah, you mean he's at Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires. I misunderstood.
Though weirdly, I still don't see that pic on his instagram.
It’s a Reel, one of Instagram’s limited time photos. You can see it if you tap on the profile picture, usually.
Those are called stories, reels are different. Sorry, feeling pedantic this evening 🤓
As the other person said, those are stories. I know how they work. it's just not there for me. There's only one post on his stories, and it' s not that.
I caught it when it was up on his stories and you are right that it disappeared sooner than it should have. I assume he deleted it because people were messaging him speculating on what it meant.
Revenge tour is coming!!
It really does feel like the whole club is locked into making it back
Blanco is the linchpin. Without him in the attack, nothing in recent acquisitions makes me confident Portland will make it to the semifinal. With him, it _almost_ feels guaranteed, if he stays in form.
This is great. Injuries notwithstanding I think Blanco works his heart out all the time. Even if he starts to become physically less fit he's the kind of guy who can be a huge motivator for incoming young players. I'm psyched to have him back.
Blanco at 80% is better than most MLS attacking mids at 100%, no doubt.
I'll gladly take him at 100% for 50% of the matches.
We had him at about that rate, and it got us to the cup final, so your math checks out
JCVR and Blanco back?! Hot damn, that’d be great.
Whole league fucked. Let's go.
VAMOS! Don’t care what anyone says he has a lot more to give. Hope he stays healthy and gives us some more amazing moments!
so much good news at once with seba, van rankin, new kit tease- this is not how i expected this to turn out, and for once i mean that in a good way. plus, if we're lucky, williamson might play in our first regular season game! what a day
This off season turned around quick. This, re signing Van Rankin, and David gives me a lot of hope for next season
Revenge of Chucky. I dig it.
Designated player still I assume?
We just signed a 2nd U22 guy, so he can't be, I don't believe.
It’s convoluted, here’s the rule.
U22 Initiative Roster Slots
Number of Slots:
Each MLS team will have up to three U22 Initiative Slots that will each occupy one of the 20 existing Senior Roster Slots. The number of U22 Initiative Slots available to each team will be based on that team’s use of its third Designated Player slot.
If a Club has a vacant third Designated Player slot, the Club will have available three U22 Initiative Slots.
If a Club elects to sign a third Designated Player, the number of U22 Initiative Slots would be impacted in the following way:
* If the third Designated Player is a Young Designated Player, the club will have all three U22 Initiative Slots.
* If the third Designated Player is age 24 or older, yet is at, or below, Maximum Targeted Allocation Money Amount ($1,612,500), the club will have all three U22 Initiative Slots.
* If the third Designated Player is age 24 or older and is above Maximum Targeted Allocation Money Amount ($1,612,500), the club will have one U22 Initiative Slot.
All three of Blanco, Yimmi, and Niezgoda are over 24, so the only potential loophole is the second case. (But if one of them is under Max TAM why would they be a DP?
So yeah, I think Blanco can only get Max TAM at this point.
MLS, convoluted? No way!
Better not be as a DP
I would be fine if he was a DP if it is for just one season
Nope, he’ll be a TAM player. I’m guessing it’ll be just about the same as Valeri, 2 years, 750kish, he’ll have a great year, then fall off a cliff in 2023. With Moreno, we’re perfectly prepared for the risk, and I’m overjoyed to have Blanco back. This team is seriously well equipped to be a top team next season. We just need a young CB and I’m overjoyed with the off-season.
No way. If it was DP money, he would've signed weeks ago
/u/DerekIsThatYou getting excited yet?
Not until it's official!
Told ya so. As soccer becomes more mainstream here, I’m noticing the ugly part of English soccer: media savvy agents and toxic fans. Blanco’s agent pulled every classic English tabloid move to drum up interest for his client.
