Just posted this because it’s the most reliable source. Also the last sentence… if we’re gonna get ANOTHER U22 Ayala/Moreno-caliber player this off season I’m going to flip my shit

foolinthezoo

That would be hands-down our biggest offseason. U22 CB and I'll be geeked.

Jolandia

If we resign Blanco I would have to agree

foolinthezoo

Maybe, imo. I think a full commit to a change in system with pieces that better suit counter-pressing has to happen. If we can afford doing that *and* re-signing Blanco to a TAM deal, hell yeah.

db0606

I don't think we get Blanco AND two U-22 signings. Sure they don't much against the cap, but you still have to pay those transfer fees and you are not getting a U-22 CB on the cheap. I don't think we have the kind of money for both that AND throwing Blanco a high TAM deal.

foolinthezoo

Which is why I personally think we're better going with the U-22 deals. I would love to keep Blanco but the contract has to be exactly right for roster construction purposes.

MikesCerealShack

Are you able to clarify what the U22 initiative is? I'm not familiar with it.

foolinthezoo

[Here's the official announcement](https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/mls-launches-u22-initiative-to-support-further-investment-in-young-players). Also detailed in the roster rules Essentially, a team is allowed to sign up to three players that fill a U-22 initiative slot. Players can occupy the U22 initiative slot through the season they turn 25 years old. These players cannot also be a DP. The reason to use these is that you can spend whatever you want on the transfer fee and it won't impact their salary cap hit. It's a chance to get those very exciting prospects that previously we've missed out on because we couldn't offer more in transfer. If you have 3 Designated Players, you get ONE U-22 slot. If you have 2 DPs and one TAM-level DP, you get all THREE slots. If you have fewer than 3 DPs, you get all THREE slots.

db0606

It's a new rule whereby MLS teams can sign up to three (how many depends on what you DP situation is) players under 22 years old to fat contracts and/or pay large transfer while only taking up $150-200k of salary cap space (depending on age). So basically the team could go out, pay Estudiantes $5 million for Ayala's transfer fee, give him a $500k salary, but he would only count $150k toward the cap. Kinda how DPs can get salaries that exceed the league maximum of like $625k or something, but only count $625k against the cap but for young players. The idea is for teams to work on acquiring and developing young talent.

MikesCerealShack

Fantastic explanation, thanks!

This guy pipe dreams

Dizconekt

Would love it but we don't have 30 mill to sign him lol

Jolandia

HELL YEAH

ChiefSalvaje

IT WORKS ON MANY LEVELS

i_spit_hot_fire

Wonder if all this news today is an indication that the blanco saga is basically complete, and they’re simply waiting to announce it one way or the other? Probably not but I will hope

Jolandia

I’m all for a bit of hope, I like it

BurntBlues

Given these U22 deals, Blanco would HAVE to be on a TAM deal. Idk if it’s the length or the money that’s the hold up, but he’s definitely not coming back as a DP given these signings.

terrorllama

The FO wants an injury clause, Blanco doesn't. It has nothing to do with $ or length. It was always going to be a TAM deal.

Extension_Crow_7891

Where is this from? Source?

terrorllama

It's been reported multiple times on this group.

Extension_Crow_7891

I have seen multiple people say this without seeing a source. Maybe I’ve missed it. Happy to even search for a name or something if you can give me anything at all

terrorllama

I posted links to the first two places I saw it. I've seen it in at least 2 more articles, but I'm not able to search for them atm.

Extension_Crow_7891

Alright that’s fair. A week ago I would have tried harder to find it but at this point I’ll probably just wait for an announcement.

Extension_Crow_7891

Yeah I mean twellman said it was related to the knee injury but he doesn’t say what the hold up is. Certainly have seen a lot of people speculating it’s an “injury clause” (what does that even mean? If he gets hurt we can cut him?) but haven’t seen any reporting at all on the details of the deal outside of TAM level.

terrorllama

Injury clauses can have a large range of consequences. From cutting the player, to reduction of pay or other financial things. The one place that out right said it's an injury clause issue, was Argentinian.

PM-me-dad-jokes-k

Couldn’t we buy down a different DP and resign Blanco as a full DP and still get the 3 slots?

foolinthezoo

Neither Niezgoda nor Yimmi are under the Max TAM level

PeterOliver

Hope the next one is CB.

terrorllama

Or even a RB.

PeterOliver

Or a GK even lol.

FireballHangover

ArgenTimbers still going strong
