Neither are awe-inspiring signings (or re-signings) however the same could be said for Attinella and Clark when they joined and they both did their jobs. Bingham was a very good MLS level goalkeeper prior to his move to Galaxy, willing to give him a chance to see if he can replicate his Earthquakes form with us.

ThisDerpForSale

Why do we dislike Bingham?

CDH83

I’m also out of the loop on this. I’ve noticed some Bingham hate on here and don’t know where it started. I remember him being a decent MLS keeper a few years back. This pickup seems okay. In MLS it often seems as though you’re better off spending money on field players than a high level GK.

IRraymaker

I mean, we paid him $80k to sit on our practice field last year, and depending on what we pay him to sit on our bench it could be fine. He was a middling to sub-par keeper in his last Galaxy season, but not awful. He's fine as a third stringer IMO, but if he's our number two and making more than $150k I'm gonna wish we tried something different. Hopefully he's a good lockeroom guy.

CDH83

Gotcha, hopefully the coaches saw something while on the practice fields that made him standout rather than it just being an addition out of convenience.

rosecityreds84

Does no one remember when he tried to punch Valeri?

murty_the_bearded

Apparently not, I don’t remember that. Was that when he was with SJ or LAG?

rosecityreds84

SJ. Valeri kicked the ball after the whistle was blown and hit a SJ player, can’t remember who. Bingham ran out of the box and swung at him.

murty_the_bearded

Sounds vaguely familiar now… gosh how time flies.. that feels like forever ago

rosecityreds84

2017 I think? Can’t remember

murty_the_bearded

I found what I think was the thread on this sub discussing it, but the original post included a link to a GIF of the incident that no longer exists. https://reddit.com/r/timbers/comments/4f70o1/how_did_bingham_not_get_a_red_for_this_i_dont/

ThisDerpForSale

I definitely did not remember that.

murty_the_bearded

He was quite good a number of years ago but his time with Galaxy wasn’t quite as good as his stint at SJ and, best I can tell, he hasn’t played a professional game since 2019. He has been training with us for a few years so hopefully the keeper coaching staff have been helping him keep from building up too much rust, but it certainly feels like we’re taking a bit of a flier with him. If the pay is reasonable then I’m not going to get too bent out of shape and hope for the best.

Lachwen

My husband is a Quakes fan and for a while there I found I could judge how well/badly their games were going by how frequently I heard him mutter "God *dammit* Bingham."

PDXSb

I don't dislike him personally (don't know him), but the fact that no team wanted him in 2021 seems to say something about his ability, so I guess we'll see. I think folks were somewhat wary with Atinella and Clark last year, Clark wasn't even the starter yet. And that turned out okay. Time will tell if Bingham or Ivacic can step up this year.

joshing_slocum

Lazy effort on the FO's part. Prove me wrong Ivacic, prove me wrong.

foolinthezoo

Yup. 2 (+1) is more buy-in than I was hoping. Attinella-Clark was similarly risky and we were lucky that it worked out.

rosecityreds84

Color me……meh

PDXPuma

I just don't know if there was anyone on the market who would have considered Portland who is better.

hibernial

Thomas Hasal

PDXPuma

That's a good answer.. I imagine we'd have to give up a decent amount for him to Vancouver since he's a home grown..

SteveBartmanIncident

Fine. Hope Aljaz shows the quality that prompted his acquisition; I'm not too interested in cheering for Bingham.

KateIsThatYou

Well, that happened

bornaloserrr

This ain’t it fam

bakedraspberry

This will be fine. In MLS you don’t win by spending big at keeper. The team needs to be more defensive and compact and can’t always rely on a best xi shortlist keeper to bail them out.

joshing_slocum

> you don’t win by spending big at keeper This is a ridiculous take. There are 4-5 positions that rise above all others on a soccer field, and if keeper isn't one of them then let's just put the best community college keeper in the nets and call it good.

BoHackJorseman

Yeah and... did ya watch the MLS final by chance??

joshing_slocum

In person. You? Sitting comfortable at home? If you are putting that loss on Clark, you are certifying yourself as a low IQ soccer fan.

BoHackJorseman

Oh buddy, I am in the Clark camp on this one, and fuck no. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind until I got to the interwebs after the game. I've seen Clark keep us in games we had no business being in. Maybe check my other comments. I was there, spending way more than I should have to be in 117. I'm just saying when the championship comes down to keepers, saying keepers don't matter is fucking stupid. End of.

joshing_slocum

Oh, sorry, I misinterpreted your comment. Best to you.

bakedraspberry

Sean Johnson definitely was a difference maker (I don’t know what they spend on him but he’s certainly not a DP). The rest of the team didn’t give Steve enough to work with. It’s not on Steve that the offense was flat for 93 minutes and missed several penalties.

bakedraspberry

I obviously don’t want the team to be spending that small, but you should be spending right. For the minor rebuild year that this will probably be this is the right spend. Remember when Tim Howard was a DP? That didn’t go too well for Colorado.

joshing_slocum

> Remember when Tim Howard was a DP? Bought an aging star ... dumb move. But a solid up-and-comer at a $400-500k salary makes sense. Haven't watched Ethan Horvath play in a while so not sure his form these days, but someone like him.

Schwifty_rick_369

Uh oh

tripstreet

Ivacic is the worst MLS goalkeeper Ive ever seen.

Jolandia

Yeah he definitely didn’t put in a MOTM performance against RSL last year and made a fantastic triple save against San Jose in 2020, noooo

tripstreet

Defend him all you want, he's fucking shit and if he ends up our #1 I'm rioting.

Jolandia

He’s made 7 appearances and has not been terrible. You don’t really know how good he is, and neither do I. He’s our #1 going into this season

tripstreet

You're having a laugh. He's a huge reason we shipped 6 to Seattle AT HOME, he was pathetic. He's been out his depth ever single time he's between the sticks. Maybe try using your eyes next time you watch a match.

Jolandia

Everyone was bad that game. I’m not a terribly big fan of him but he had an amazing game against RSL. He’s been with us 3 years and has barely played, I don’t think it’s fair to judge too harshly until he gets consistent playing time. He’s better than goddamn Vermeer
