Unpopular opinion but that was the most savage rick. He killed shane and that sent him into HARDCORE mode. Murder jacket is great but he accepted gabe during that phase. I feel like s3 rick would have sent him out or killed him.
Think Rick was still in hardcore mode in S5 when they meet Gabe. He eventually accepted him, but not for awhile. He was ready to sacrifice Gabe when he had him show them where the food bank was and a few episodes later was the red machete scene, which IMO was the most savage Rick - even more than the throat bite scene because at that point they were fighting for their lives.
