private_unlimited

Ya, 1kg of steel is heavier than 1kg of feathers /s

AMViquel

There is a joke with 1 ounce of gold being heavier than an ounce of feathers, because the ounce unit gold uses is troy ounces which is about 10% heavier than regular ounces. And that's just another reason to not use stupid units.

pictures_at_last

And when you have lots of it, you'll find that a pound of gold is *lighter* than a pound of feathers, because there are fewer troy ounces in a troy pound than there are avoirdupois ounces in an avoirdupois pound.

AMViquel

"Fuck it, I don't care" seems to be the motto of the people in charge of non-metric units.

EtherMan

https://m.imgur.com/gallery/iDOzAa5 Probably not the first use I’m linking but.

HandleJamTrio

Ironically, they’re the same people that’re in charge of metric.

AMViquel

> The origin of the troy weight system is unknown. Although the name probably comes from the Champagne fairs at Troyes This is how I picture the troy ounce/pound being defined: https://i.imgur.com/5CHALKh.png

popje

Thats he kind of joke I wouldn't get

jnd-cz

https://youtu.be/N3bEh-PEk1g

rnzz

1kg of feathers is lighter, because as soon as you put the pile down, some feathers will fly away, making it lighter than the steel.

IndigoBadman

They weigh the same, but if anything the feathers are heavier because of the guilt of what you did to those birds EDIT they way > they weigh

i_love_rem

> The way They weigh

saman2013

This is the weigh.

IndigoBadman

Fml

TutelarSword

Its okay, they deserved it for being government spy drones.

rnzz

Probably the same amount of guilt as if you took the 1kg steel ball from the _middle_ of a newton's cradle, ruining it in the process, when you could've kept it working if you had picked one from either end.

Phlebotanist

Newton had a strange childhood, with a cradle like that. Still I can see how it lead to him becoming a physicist.

electronicdream

Then it's not 1kg of feathers anymore, innit

Tbreezy4

Oh God wasn't expecting this reference. That got me good 😂😂😂😂

-Egglord10100101-

technically it is and it isn't

Fouray

If you have a pound of both then yes.

youcantwhooshme

but you can buy more feathers for a pound than steel

Anchor689

Well that's just because feathers are more expensive.

GiveMeYourBussy

*steel

olixio

You have one pound of steal and one pound of feathers, which is heavier?

MegaBassFalzar

The feathers, because you have to carry the weight of what you did to those birds

somebody12

Lead.

Always_Inorbit

Leed*

Dan_Glebitz

Everyone knows 1Kg of **steel** is heavier than 1Kg of feathers. Not sure about '**steal**' though...?

AmitSraier123

Steel*

DuntadaMan

You gotta live with what you did to that many birds.

jademonkeys_79

*heavier then feathers

Anxious-Bite-2375

Hey, would you like to be slapped with 1 kg of steel or 1 kg of feather? Ye, that's what I thought. Me smart.

converter-bot

1.0 kg is 2.2 lbs

RigatoniPasta

r/confidentlyincorrect

memecut

But he is right, 1 is less than 1.6

Nihilikara

By the same logic, a foot is shorter than an inch because 1 foot is 12 inches and 1 is less than 12.

memecut

depends on the size of the foot, and number of toes

WarmBaths

Exactly right!

AMViquel

And a left foot?

Busteray

I compared our iq numbers and as it turns out, I'm smarter than you so I know I must be right

BergaGaming

I’m not going to get whooshed in correcting you am I?

memecut

no promises

Malnewt

Well no because a mile is 1760 yards whereas a kilometre is only 1000 meters. 🤔🤪

converter-bot

1760 yards is 1609.34 meters

Malnewt

Kinda proving my point there converter bot! 🥴

BadNeighbour

With that profile picture, a likely troll.

Standard-Ad-6213

That's been shopped over the top to hide the real profile pic.

pavlo_escobrah

wat

MrDuckyyy

this is me in maths class

Go1gotha

For those who still aren't getting this; 1 Kilometer = 1000 meters. 1 mile = 1609 meters.

Gloryboy811

For the Americans who still aren't getting this: 1 Kilometer = 1093.61 yards / 3280.84 feet. 1 mile = 1760 yards / 5280 feet.

im_a_dr_not_

3280.84 feet = 9869.52 hands 5280 feet = 15840 hands 1 ft = 3 hands

jaysmoove42

But how many eagle wings to badger tails is it?

im_a_dr_not_

An African eagle or European eagle?

Strykehammer

An African Swallow maybe, but not a European swallow that’s my point.

kingscolor

But, of course, African Swallows are non-migratory! So they couldn’t bring a badger anyway! But listen, strange animals dancing in a field is no basis for a system of measurement!

quadriceritops

The lady of the lake, clad in shimmering samite, held aloft a badger tail. Proclaimed, “This shall be your unit of measure”. Accounting rejoiced.

fearnoid

This guy holy grails.

Flaky_Explanation

But which one swallows more?

Farranor

yer mum

WasirRumi

The freedom eagle.

Can_of_Ubik

Two-headed eagle.

killergoose75

I’m going to run with this by assuming that when you say “eagle wings to badger tails” we are appending the badger tail onto the top of the eagle’s wing while also including the length of the other wing. Also assuming by eagle you mean the Bald Eagle (since we are talking about the absurdity of freedom units), and assuming we are talking about the average, adult badger then: 7.5 foot wingspan + 150mm tail (about 0.49 feet, for the sake of simplicity in rounding this is 0.5 feet) gives us a total of 8 feet = 1 “eagle wings to badger tail” 1 mile is 5280 feet, so 5280 / 8 gives us **660** **eagle wings to badger tails** [badger tail source](http://www.badgerland.co.uk/animals/size.html) [bald eagle wingspan source](https://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/learn/biology/)

jaysmoove42

I will take your word for it. Thank you for the time and effort.

Twoixm

Each eagle feather is rounded up to degrees of freedom

blue_eyed_man

So do I have small feet or large hands because my feet are 1,5 of my hands

im_a_dr_not_

Rules say I can't insult someone so I've removed this dick joke.

Spoodymen

We talking your hands or my hands? I have quite long hands

PeopleCallMeSimon

... How large are your feet?

ChuckCarmichael

How much is that in barleycorns?

pointson

But whose hand r u implying?

BasedSunny

How many large boulders the size of a small boulder?

FlyingPasta

Can you do that in football fields vs full sized trucks please, I still don’t understand

frenchbud

1 km = 10.9361 NFL fields / 172.41 Toyota Tundra 1 mile = 17.6 NFL fields / 277.41 Toyota Tundra Edit : hol up ! Toyota Tundra is 5.8m wide 1000÷5.8 = 172.**413793** ; 1609÷5.8 = 277.**413793** Damn what are the odds

converter-bot

1 km is 0.62 miles

Lufia321

For the Americans who still aren't getting this: 1 Kilometre = 232.5 Toyota Corolla's 1 Mile = 374.26 Toyota Corolla's

Fouray

Yeah the US standard definitely makes more sense.

eleytheria

I don't know how can you say that when football fields haven't showed up yet

[deleted]

[удалено]

eleytheria

Haha so here one 1 go fuck yourself = 1.6km

Vitrebreaker

I always thought that if you were born into it, it would become natural. After all, I remember a lot of weird stuff like how many Francs (the old french money) is a Euro. \[EDIT\]I once asked an american how many ~~of each is what~~ yards is there in a mile, or feet in a yard.\[/EDIT\] He did not remember. So I just guess it *is* confusing as hell. By the way, 1€ = 6.55957F

NZNoldor

The franc doesn’t exist anymore, and never existed at the same time as the euro, so when would that be confusing?

Vitrebreaker

I just wrote it all wrong and corrected it. The Euro part is not confusing, I just guess the foot/yard/mile is.

NZNoldor

Ah, sorry, yeah, I misread your intentions I think. Carry on the good work!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vitrebreaker

I'm sorry, I wrote poorly what I thought. I corrected it. It's obvious I'm not a native speaker \^\^

_Shame__

For any Americans who it still isn't clear for 1 yard = *0.01 Football fields* 1 Kilometer = *10.9 Football fields* 1 mile = *17.6 Football fields* 1 Bald Eagle wing = *0.048 Football fields* And finally one Football field = *51.4 Chuck Norrises* This should make things easy to understand.

toddthegeek

wow. that actually helped me a lot. the kilo one is just a number to me, but i just realized i can visualize yards in my head.

dpash

You can approximate a yard to metre. It's out by a small amount, but that's close enough for rough approximations.

piankolada

I don’t understand, can you complicate it some more?

Simplynotcomplex

TIL a yard is smaller than a mile. I thought a yard was about the size of a feild. Huh wow

Gloryboy811

Yeah I'm not American either so it was also strange for me... I've heard of a yard stick... so maybe its something like "The length of a stick you find in your yard" rather than the length of a yard.

MyohMy1137

The word yard comes from the old English word gerd/gyrd which literally meant branch. As in tree branch. Measuring sticks were once actual sticks cut to a specific length. There would be a master stick or gyrd that everyone would compare theirs too and cut their own yard stick. So you are not actually too far off.

kkk868652

How many football fields is it

jnd-cz

European football or American football?

baronjhui

You’re doing it wrong. 1 kilometre = 13957 bananas 1 mile = 20164 bananas

mpetey123

Whoever is responding isn't American, thank goodness.

hatetepidshowers

4.18AM EST, they'll be waking up soon enough.

mpetey123

why? I didn't say anything negative. I am American as well.

UsernameIsTakenToBad

I’m still awake in the US. Also, fuck the imperial system.

coat_hanger_dias

He's talking about the response in the picture. They spelled it "kilometre", but in the US it's spelled "kilometer".

KodenSounds

Well we don't want whatever that thing of a person is. Give it to the Aussies. - me on behalf of the Brits.

sirfappin

This just like the time mc D’s couldn’t sell 1/3 pounders as Majority thought it would be smaller than a quarter pounder

OnionNo

[It was A&W](https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/76144/why-no-one-wanted-aws-third-pound-burger) that tried to compete against the quarter pounder with their own third pound burger, and discovered people were idiots.

GrandSquanchRum

Which is a shame because A&Ws were the best fast food I've ever had. Whenever I run by one I'm sure to go there and get a burger and root beer.

Captain-Insulin

They should just call it a Royale With Cheese

sirfappin

“ Royal with cheese?! Well I can picture the cheese but do they have crusty partially gelatinous nondairy Gum based beverages?”

riley_11

They call them shakes

ozzien20

Lol in France McDonald's serves beer.

EelTeamNine

3 is less than 4, rightfully so. /s

chloe-thing

They should sell 1/5 pounders

Ivalia

Should’ve made 1/100 pound burger

barebacklover99

That's just bad maths lmao.

Sockura

It’s 2 am and my brain can’t wrap my head around the simple kindergarten math so someone please dumb it down for me

kakumei88

1 mile = ~1.6 kilometer 1 kilometer = ~0.62 mile

[deleted]

well... it's not got much to do with the metric system per se - it's someone not understanding conversion. Which reminds me of a time i weant eating out with my parents. because we lived close to the german border, we wen't to eat there. In that city it was quite common for a lot of restaurants to accept euros or swiss francs, but they'd only give you euros as change. now, we ate for... idk, lets say 80 € but my parents only had francs, so they decided to pay with that (conversion was probably around 1€ to 1.25 CHF) so they gave the waitress like 150 CHF and then they all calculated together something... strange., they were like: okay, so 80 € is 100 CHF, so the change is 50 CHF and 50 CHF is 75 € - altogheter, confidently wrong. i (at that point probably like... 16 or 17 yo) was like "Wait, hold up, you messed up the exchange" but no - everybody was totally confident (including the waitress) so at some point i stopped discussing. But after we left, my father (a teacher) again started to tell me off and i redid the whole math with him again, until he finally realised, that he was wrong, so i asked him, to return and pay the difference, but he flat out refused. That was fucking embarassing.

AniMeu

Crossing the border to save money and then even cheat them on the bill... And on top of it a teacher who I would expect to have higher moral standards than the average. Tell your dad I’m disappointed.

[deleted]

well the cheating out of the bill was unintentional - and the not going back was probably out of embarassment. But we went to germany to eat somewhat regularly, because Constance was the closest place to find (good) restaurants of certain cuisines. so if we wanted to have indian or chinese, that was the closest option.

kenpachitz

So you guys had an 80 EUR meal… for 5 EUR?

eleytheria

If my kids pulled that on me i would definitely surrender the excess cash to them.

[deleted]

well, i'd have walked right back to that restaurant with that excess cash.

eleytheria

Yeah my daughter would too. My son, however, no way

TerrainRepublic

Depends on the restaurant tbh. Mum and pop place, probably would go back, chain? Nah mate

DarthTittious

Actually the Americans went left.

tanstaafl74

Are we going to ignore the obvious troll profile pic?

BlueLegion

That's not the PFP, it's what the PFP was censored with

McSmarfy

Just recently I was watching someone explain USD and CAD exchange rates backwards. It's the same but different.

gnana119

U agree tat india is 70 times wealthier than USA? 1 USD = 70 INR

Yeah, but the Americans will get to drink in Gallons rather than Litres, so they’ll get more!

That's simply not true my dear friend. We love America just as much as every other country and we love our fellow Americans just as much as any other human on Earth. We only have some valid criticism against the current situation in the USA. To only name a few bits and bobs: * Distribution of wealth (400 rich people own as much as 195 million) * Health care situation (- middleclass+sick=poor and poor+sick=death while rich+sick=best treatment in the world and still rich after it) * Education (amassing serious debts before even starting a career is modern Slavery) * Gun Laws (Too many shot people - nuff said) * Unregulated capitalism (Rich people can put billions into political propaganda and lobbyism and harm society by corrupting the system and polluting the environment while making sure the laws cover their exploitation of labour) * Low tax policiy (Not enough public funds to act and change things) * Systemic Racism (People of Colour are not equal) * Right wing neo fascism on the rise (Trump and the MAGA crew) * Human Rights violations (Guantanamo, Iraq War) * Weird relationship to history (Genocide of native tribes; Slavery) * Imperial system (nah, that's just mockery, we're taking the mickey out of you muppets) But everything else is great in America and you are great people. Love from Germany! You're the best.

ReleaseTheBeeees

I guess it's what you get for being such a culturally influential culture that refuses to do anything about it's super noisy morons
