alien_number12

do you always go to school in a yellow bus?

Manic_Mechanist

Yellow buses are the only option provided for you, if you dont want to ride the bus it’s up to you to find your own way to school by walking, driving etc

LiamDrawz

Yup, unless your walking, riding with a parent or homeschooled, you're taking the yellow bus, my mom drives one. Edit: Thanks for the upvotes?? I don't really understand why there are so many but its much appreciated <33

Tidal_Shadow

Next question: are some busses bullet proof?

LiamDrawz

I don't know, I've never heard of them being bullet proof so I'm gonna guess no?

Tidal_Shadow

OK. Can you get bullet proof school bags?

LiamDrawz

Probably?? Why does it have to be bullet proof?

the_less_great_wall

Yes. I don't know why they settled on yellow, but it's distinctive like the London taxi design, so i can't complain. It just contributes to our unique national automotive identity.

Shadowzaron32

They settled on it because of how bright it is. Yellow is one of the colors that stands out regardless the surrounding and naturally grabs your vision. Even in the most foggy day you can see them coming.

autismusprime12

Is homelessness such a big problem as it is pictured in movies and pop culture or it looks like it does in europe for example?

Dooderdoot

In some big cities, yeah

KnownAsPower

Depends on where you live. In the cities, it’s pretty bad, but out in the rural area homelessness is practically none.

callmeanonymous123

Have you ever tried to learn the metric system? If you have, did you find it easier to use?

XeroRagnarok

I have learned it and it’s definitely easier to use when doing calculations but I use the imperial system when talking to others because most people don’t know the metric

benbenboyz

Thats reasonable

Mmariowario

Yes but I used it rarely because it's not common in the us so I gave up, nobody here would understand what im talking about so it's easier to just use what everyone else uses

the_less_great_wall

I have. It is easier, but we are a stubborn bunch who don't want to change.

HumongousPP_

It’s easier but we’re just used to doing it our way.

CarsPlanesTrains

Are your meals really that huge or is it a meme?

Mmariowario

They are, not as large as the memes but they are abnormally large compared to the rest of the world

gagelm04

You’ve never been to Italy lol, as an American that lived in Italy for a few years I can confirm Italians do eat more then us lol

Lord_Shisui

Mediterranean diet is far healthier though. Unless you eat pizza 24/7.

UNIVERSAL9168

i have been there and boy they r big

the_less_great_wall

Meal size memes are to scale

Real_Fixa

Meal sizes are definitely bigger in America, but some memes almost go to far (noticed how I said almost 😬)

3ogle

are you allowed to carry pocket knifes and stuff like that outside ?

Gabe_Follower

Differs between each state. Mostly yes.

Mmariowario

Yes if you are over 18 you can carry a blade of any length unless you enter a govt building then the limit is 5½ inches, under 18 it's always 5½ inches but you can't bring it into a govt building This is just my state's law regarding knives, it's different for every state

3ogle

so you can carry kunai’s and stuff? that’s pretty cool

MrSalvos

In Arizona at 21 I think you can carry a big ass sword and there's nothing the law can do about it.

LucasV2007

How are you guys doing?

DrHospsa

Well the president wants to raise the debt ceiling putting the country in even more debt, the inflation rates are extremely high making basic needs more expensive than ever, there’s a supply chain crisis so there’s beginning to be a shortage of everything, and the economy is doing really bad due to inflation.

grimmer2000

But the billionaires are doing good, right?

OutlawQuill

The billionaires are *always* doing good

hatecrunchysounds

Billionaires are always doing well. They are rarely doing good.

DrBankfarter

“Superman does good, you’re doing well” -Tracy Jordan

chantal11234

Are jocks a thing

Low-System-5067

HahaHHAHAHAHHA yes there are some football players who are rough, but most of our jocks are nice. Very cocky, but nice

nvrsleepagin

Idk...the jocks in my school were like everyone else, some nice some jerks.

Plane_Web_4658

Yes but no. Like other people have mentioned, our generation is much more diverse both socially and in technicality, so most people don’t really “fit” into one social category anymore. That being said, there are some people who just embrace the stereotype, sooo. Depends I guess

Saucyboi__

What's up with the south

Low-System-5067

Barbecue, Disney, Princess and the Frog, Dream That’s all I got but JEEZ is the food good

Streaker364

Most people don't know if they're even speaking a language but when they suddenly put some good ass food before you and 2 liters of sweet tea before you, then you'd understand. I have no trouble deciphering the language as I grew up around it.

NavySEALW7735

Are there actual groups of bullies in school like there usually are in films and on tv. Everytime i watch one I'm amazed by how brutal they are.

mybrainistoast

it’s usually just some guy and their friends. there’s no underground group of bullies, just some dickheads here and there

thenerdyblackbelt

It depends on where you go to school, but from my experience they very well exist. They're usually not quite as violent as TV and movies depict.

[deleted]

does your school really have groups of people like “popular”, “nerds” etc. edit: thank you so much for the replies and upvotes. the answers were really helpful (and quite varied surprisingly), i enjoyed reading them all. :)

Yankeewitz

Diversity is increasing so this used to be a bigger problem in the 80s and 90s but I feel like it’s natural for people to choose groups that they closely align with. We call this being cliquey and no body likes it because people always get left out of groups

MrPenguinPants9

For example, I got dragged into this gay group and I'm glad I was

Mmariowario

Kinda but they aren't as generalized

Lesbean36

oh definitely. it’s not nearly as bad, but it still exists and can be prominent depending on your school. in my school, it’s very obvious who the popular kids are, but it’s also not so horrendous to deal with. they are typically rich, some are smart, and most are copy and pastes of if you searched up “typical american.” the nerds don’t really exist, in my school at least. if you’re smart, you’re not really picked on. you usually merge with other groups like goths, popular kids, athletes, normies, artists, etc. and then there’s people who aren’t in any group in particular. i consider myself in that group.

Pluto_ismy_planet

Yes but nobody actually cares enough to pay attention to it unless you’re a popular person

Hayych1

Why do you guys have to tip waiters and stuff?

Mmariowario

Because employers are allowed to pay waiters almost nothing so we keep tipping so that they can live

the_less_great_wall

This is the answer. You are not required to, but the wait staff gets paid so poorly that it is necessary for their survival to get tips.

Yankeewitz

Accurate but it also it an infinite loop because as long as we keep tipping, employers won’t feel the need to raise their wages

Dynamatics

Even if, most employees make more money in the tipping culture, so they won't do anything about it.

DrHospsa

You don’t?

Hayych1

No, literally they get paid normal cheques. USA is the only country ik so far that does it

DrHospsa

Really!? Yea it’s expected to give your waiter a 20% tip

fl1ckshoT

In germany, you tip around 5-10%, because waiters get half decent (although still minimum) wages here

jaspark23

In the UK you just don’t ask for change and that’s their tip

edgasudzius

Are you from america

CaptainC_RBLX

Indeed I am

MaxCastillo7

People tell me American schools are bad, is that actually true? Like an actual genuine question. I’m Hispanic for refference

MrWafflzbro6

Yes and no. It very much depends on where you are going to school. For example I used to live in NYC and I constantly failed class after class and it was just a horrible environment but then I moved upstate and the schools there were a much better environment and the teachers actually cared about my grades and mental health so I got the help I needed and I thrived in that environment.

Bed_human

Yeah definitely. I had the choice to go to my local high school or one downtown here in Chicago. My local high school had a reputation of weekly fights while the one i went to downtown had literally no fights in the 4 years i was there. Only thing i saw was two girls screaming at each other lol

KristijonasGTA

I am a Lithuanian currently in the US. School is way easier and much more enjoyable here. The food sucks tho. Its oftenly cold and you dont have much choise. But the school itself is nice, teachers are cool too

MaxCastillo7

Ooh interesting

TechnonixX

They can be.. but it really depends where you are.

ianisysto

Oh yeah it’s bad a specially the food. My school had around 4 fights in the first week of school this year and there is constantly people doing drugs I also found a random condom packet in the hallway on the floor

MaxCastillo7

Jesus.. that sounds really bad. Mine also happens to be messy at times but.. not to that point.

Fl0wwy

When do y’all take the SAT? and is it very hard?

Mmariowario

Last year of high school, I haven't taken it yet

War_master_9

Junior Year of high-school and it is supposed to be super hard

Additional-Act7234

>it is supposed to be super hard wait really? in the country where i live, people say you only need max of 4 months prep to crack sat exam. but tbf our all other exams are tough af so it makes medium type exams easier

War_master_9

I mean you could probably do well with 4 months of dedicated practice. I never took it cuz of covid

CelluxTheDuctTape

Do you all have those fancy water-pouring fridges? I think that they are really cool, but I have only seen them in stores, none of my friends/relatives have one. It might sound stupid, but one of my life goals is to get one of those for myself someday

KnownAsPower

Yep, I use it all the time.

Imjustbxred

Greatest us president iyo?

Mmariowario

Top 3 in order imo Abraham Lincoln George Washington Theodore Roosevelt

Az_Knight

Do you actually drive at the age of 16? And drink at the age of 23?

EricPlays_RBLX

You can legally drive when you are 16 and you can drink when you are 21

BiggieCheese63

You can drive with an adult next to you at 15, drive alone at 16, and drink at 21.

je_naime_pas_French

do high school parties with illegal alcohol really exist?

quietreader879

Definitely.

KnownAsPower

They’re pretty common in my area. I have a neighbor who has been arrested for underage drinking at their own party.

Teun002

What country does not have these?

JustSansder

do yall actually want to use the imperial measurement system?

thenerdyblackbelt

It depends on who you ask, personally I'm good with both.

NeonPupper

We're actually taught both. We use centimeters for things smaller than inches, meters if it makes more sense than feet.

Thhunderwing

How do you rate your food habits?

Skyflyer1214

I honestly am very happy with my food habits. It’s definitely not impossible to eat healthy in America and so I eat a lot of salads and sandwiches bc tasty. The most unhealthy parts are 1) fast food where they dump a gallon of grease on everything 2) any processed food (like canned peaches/ready to eat meals) where they dump in corn syrup and sugar. 3) pop. Do not drink pop. It’s almost 50% pure sugar

Yankeewitz

Helthy

Parthiv_M23

Are smartphones allowed In school. What other electronic equipment are allowed. I'm from india and nothing is allowed unless you are in college. Seen it in movies and that is soo cool if it is true. Also don't you guys have to wear uniforms in school

LargeDepression

I’m answering this in class rn. You can’t have phones out of your backpack in elementary school or middle school. But it’s typically allowed in Highschool, some teachers are less lenient than others though. In public schools it is uncommon for there to be uniforms. The only schools I see with uniforms are private schools.

An_Ant2710

Wtf is a Wendy's? And what does meduim rare, rare, well done, etc. mean? (Cows are apparently holy so I've never seen any steak or beef being sold here)

Real_Fixa

Wendy's is just a fast food restaurant and medium rare, rare, well done, eat, are just the levels of how much you want a steak (normally) to be cooked. Rare is somewhat raw while well done is cooked to Almost burnt

An_Ant2710

>Wendy's is just a fast food restaurant Ah cool. We don't have those here. We just got a Burger King near my place like 5 or 6 years ago. Is it just burgers and fries and so on? Thanks for answering. I need to try steak at some point.

XeroRagnarok

There’s burgers and fries but also stuff like chicken. I don’t know too we’ll because I never go to fast food places

Mmariowario

Rare is almost raw, medium rare is a little more done, then medium is in the middle then medium well, then well done

peterbro77

What is GPA? What is an AP test?

Plane_Web_4658

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Essentially each class gives you a certain amount of points/credit depending on how well you do in the class and your GPA is like your average amount of points. AP tests are finals tests that give you Extra Points

PosingArt

To explain what AP classes are they stand for advanced placement where the class is accelerated and much harder than our regular classes. They are comparable to a college class. In terms of AP tests, you aren't just taking this course because it's harder. You can receive college credits by taking them meaning you can avoid them in college. But to gain these credits you must pass a final exam, which would be the AP test. They are timed and have different stages of questions. The most notorious being FRQs. To pass the exam you need a 3 and the grading scale is 1-5.

VikingOPPP

are gun laws really that free, is weed really that common, are y'all really that fat? edit: another one, are dreamsexuals and dream stans real?

qwertyuiopasdq

gun laws: depends on the state weed: I have no idea what weed even looks like weight: depends the area, a wealthy area where people can afford wealthy food etc will have very healthy people, a poorer area not so much

Low-System-5067

Yes (sometimes background checks and you can’t just carry one everywhere that’s kinda suspicious), not THAT common, but I know some kids in my high school who do it (I don’t), and idk (most people aren’t, but I suppose our average is above other countries)

sprinkleness

Do you like America? also are the stereotypes true?

KnownAsPower

I don’t personally agree with a lot of the opinions and polices here, but I rather think it’s nice. The stereotypes are *mostly* false.

Tidal_Shadow

Is there actually bullet proof school bags or is that a joke?

qwertyuiopasdq

they exist but nobody has them

DrivenByMeds

Do you really can tell the difference between American accent and Canadian accent?

Air-Mattress

Sometimes they say “eh?” And properly pronounce their o’s without slight nasal resonance. In New York, for example, people pronounce “Sorry” as “Sahrry”. Most Canadians I’ve heard say it as “Soarry”.

adij123

I'll just like to say inspite of all the shit America gets on the internet you guys have a way better quality of life than the country i live in and I'll exchange life with y'all in a heartbeat.

the_less_great_wall

I hope things improve for you.

SeriousLingonberry57

Yeah.

TheNamewhoPostedThis

Where you live?

adij123

india lmao. competition due to population is immense

ModularWings

Brazilian here,is the School really that bad?

War_master_9

Most kids dislike it but I loved school. Usually depends on the teachers

Low-System-5067

My school isn’t half bad, but our principal is nice. The teachers can be strict and put a lot of work, but we’re getting younger teachers which is good

insomniawhereweare

Do you have algebra in 11th grade?

Low-System-5067

I had algebra in 8th, but I was one math ahead when I transferred. 11th grade is typically Algebra II or Pre-Calculus

Street_Reflection_11

Why do you hold doors always when someone is coming? Is it as a sign of respect? Or is it cultural thing?

omqitz_trent

Just a sign of respect

KnownAsPower

Respect, it’s just a courtesy.

Kelly2305

It’s just a nice thing to do

EricPlays_RBLX

Respect

Big_Daddy_Malenkov

Respect

sonakshi_

If you ever plan to move out of America, what would be your reason?

Emilized

Do you guys actually have really shitty school lunches? I’ve seen so many posts about blue chocolate milk and maggots in apple sauce etc.

KnownAsPower

My school personally had amazing lunches, but I have friends who’ve had rotten cheese burgers, so it varies.

SCYOYO

ehh depends on the school, yes some schools are the worst but some can be not that bad

VerkoProd

why are ur military bases still in my country ?

No_Biscotti_7110

We love to maintain our “sole superpower” status.

7duckswithmachetes

Military industrial complex

TLGN

Is insulin really that expensive or are people just exaggerating? and how big exactly is that problem? edit: thank you all so much for the answers! wishing the best for all of you american diabetic people out there <3

KnownAsPower

Insulin is STUPIDLY expensive.

G3MY

Where did you come up with the idea of "sophomores", "juniors", "seniors, "AP", etc? And what do these all mean? Edit: thanks everyone for the responses :D If you don't mind me asking one last question... why can't y'all get rid of the imperial system? Edit 2: again, thanks everyone for the responses! Damn... didn't expected that changing a measurement could be that difficult but y'all gave me some very good points. Anyways, thanks everyone for the responses again and hope y'all have a nice day! :D

skatingduckie

freshman is 9th grade and 14-15 years old, sophomore is 10th grade and 15-16 years old, junior is 11th grade and 16-17 years old and senior is 12th grade and 17-18 years old. ap classes are classes you can take to give you college credits, they're basically just college level classes in high school.

LacyTheEspeon

AP stands for advanced placement

NkaujHlubXyooj

Cheese?

Infamous_Fold_9905

Cheese is the best

Roar_imadinosaurrr

Do you like America? Or would you prefer to live elsewhere?

Slender_Paint

Are you guys really that bad at geography? It's a joke here in Brazil

StillN0one

What the dog doin

theernis0

Where do i get a gun i hate my classmates (For legal reasons thats a joke) Edit: Im sorry if my jokes went to far im saying to redditor which reached out to u/redditcareresources

Mmariowario

Walmart

StoryDay7007

Wait for real? Like just at the supermarket? Also ammunition?

Mmariowario

Yeah, but only revolvers and manual rifles You can get all sorts of ammo tho

Aqualdi

I thought you were joking when you said walmart-

questionablelogic98

Largest firearms seller in the great US of A by dollars spent.

PlayBud101

Yeah it’s in the sporting section, but you need to have a liscense for it in some states

NutNoobmaster

Back to school section

thesleepingpotato22

Is a school shooting an actual common occurrence in the us?

skatingduckie

no it's not as common as it seems, it's not even on my mind while i'm at school

[deleted]

Why do u have no 4skin

ArangoHazen

Decreases wind resistance when breeding

the_less_great_wall

I was too young to object?

[deleted]

This is why I asked. It’s weird because if someone suck it they get life in jail. But take a blade and cut part off with blood everywhere and it’s a celebration. I am not weird I just don’t get it and nothing I ever read explains it so that’s why I ask now

Pristine_Title6537

What ya think of Mexico?

XeroRagnarok

The government seems broken and cartels seem to run rampant but I have nothing against the people from there.

Air-Mattress

In America we only really hear the negative stuff, just like the rest of the world with America. I usually think of the beautiful beaches and the culture but then the gangs come to mind.

SrDodo

What's a yard

Mystery-MartiaN

The area infront of and behind your house. Usually is grassy.

SoiJab

Is it true that some of you learn to use a gun before you learn to ride a bike?

Low-System-5067

I didn’t, but some people go hunting for fun;my ex definitely did

skatingduckie

yes i did

timo2308

So is it really everywhere impossible to get alcohol until you’re 21?

NeonPupper

Well, it's not legal. *But it's far from impossible*

HaDeS_Monsta

You know that we already have r/askanamerican

-DragonMoon-

Actually I didn't

Acereaper_Blaze

You people have much easier syllabus but why do you people have bad averages

Just_0_Duck

I don't fully know. But the school system is fucked and outdated. It hasn't been updated since the industrial age. Y'know, the one where all you do is follow orders.

NEOkuragi

I think most of the school systems hasn't been updated since industrial age (maybe except rich, developed countries like Finland and Switzerland). I know for sure that Polish schools hasn't even been renovated since like 100yrs

PhoenixComrade

Do americans wear shoes inside their homes?

Vinxinity

How do you cope with the weather seasons there? I live in the equator so I have never experienced summer, autumn and winter.

isdelo37

Do you really need to know every president ever?

Redditisuhgreat49

How rare is it that McDonald's ice cream machines actually work?

reddit_no_gaara

Why are Americans so in love with assault rifles? Edit: assault rifle was meant as a generalised term, so it comprehends rifles like AR-15

MrWafflzbro6

Hehehehehhee pew pew

Mmariowario

We have a very strong gun culture and the ability to purchase said guns

TechnonixX

Haha rifle go pew pew

ArangoHazen

We're very proud of our military so many children I assume grow up with parents who have guns

XxPotatoxX21

I'm surprised how many people actually believe that all our schools are shot up lmao

sprout_0204

What is America's traditional food

ClashRoyaleGhost1234

How many states have you been to?

kingautismio

Whats healthcare like from your experience? Healthcare seems to be one of the biggest complaints.

ChrisPickaxe

The answer to 90% of these questions is "depends on where you live" Each state, heck sometimes even each city, is vastly different from one another. Each region of the USA is almost like a completely different world.

abcdefg112345

would you go to war for your country?

Baby-Calypso

Fuck no

loria_lawrence

Why you can call yourself american and i (from brazil) cant?

jabulina

United States of America, enough people shortened it to American, so that’s what we are

squidboi64

What do you think about the gun laws in America?

Perfect_Juggernaut92

Some good, some bad. Some states are reasonable, some aren't. Most of the federal laws I have no issue with.

CaptainC_RBLX

I don't understand some of the attitudes some of these commentors have

What_A_Legend27

Same. It’s all stereotypically based. Then again, everyone believes in some stereotypes about other countries so who are we to judge

simpsforlightyagami

what do y’all eat for lunch?
