Like literally the Chinese foreign ministry admitted that it’s their balloon although they said that it was a weather balloon instead of anything else. It would have been a good explanation if not for the fact that everyone and their grandmothers love to claim that their surveillance devices are supposedly for meteorological purposes. For example, the cover story for the U-2 spy plane that was shot down in 1960 was a civilian research weather aircraft.

megarockman12

Riddle me this, for a man who hates the country he lives in , why doesn’t he move to the country he loves?

MisterKallous

It’s the mystery of life indeed. I actually want to add that there’s actually a case when genuine civilian device got mistaken for military object with the most (in)famous case being the Norwegian rocket incident in which that a sounding rocket that was launched to study aurora got mistaken by Russia as an inbound ICBM which predictably caused Russian nuclear forces to be put on high alert with Yeltsin reportedly activating his nuclear briefcase before the rocket was observed to be moving away from Russian airspace. The stupid thing is that the Norwegian and American scientists had given notifications about their rocket launch to many countries including Russia but somehow this message wasn’t passed on to the Russian military by Russia Foreign Ministry.

megarockman12

Now that shits funny

MisterKallous

Our world almost ended not because of international standoff (Vasily Arkhipov prevented the launch of a nuclear torpedo during Cuban Missile Crisis) or false alarm (1983 nuclear scare) but due to bureaucracy failing to do their job properly.

megarockman12

Sounds like a month python sketch

MisterKallous

In keeping with the spirit, I now have my joke theory that the balloon was indeed owned by the PLA… which just so happened to be their meteorological branches and the balloon was really a meteorological balloon which got blown horribly off course.

JQuilty

More like a Thick of It/Veep moment.

MisterKallous

Oh crap haha, I actually found this incident when I was looking up about military balloons usage in the modern era. > On October 28, 2015, one of two JLENS aerostats being used to conduct a test over Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland, became untethered. It was escorted by two fighter jets as it drifted at an altitude of approximately 16,000 feet (4,900 m) towards Pennsylvania. About three hours later, it was reported by NORAD to be approaching the ground near Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Aberdeen. Its dragging 6,700 foot (2,000 m) tether reportedly downed many power lines in the area, with loss of electrical power to as many as 20,000 area residents. The Pennsylvania State Police reported less than an hour later that the aerostat was "contained". It was found tangled in trees in Anthony Township, Pennsylvania *Aerostat refers to a tethered balloon

It's the same with people from the balkan claiming their country is greatest in the world from their apartment in western europe. At some point Ultra-Nationalism is the only thing that still connects them to their home country and "heritage".

MisterKallous

Delusional diaspora at its finest regrettably. My experience is with ethnic Chinese in SEA saying the same about PRC, like bruh just because you’re an ethnic Chinese you don’t have to grovel to PRC but of course to them I’m a hanjian (Chinese race traitor) because how dare I, a half Chinese-Indonesian, point out that it’s fine to be proud of both of my heritage.

I_like_avocado

Ive had a interaction with Chinese Exchange Student in one of my lectures who actively denied the Genocide going on in China. He tried to argue against me by comparing US Prison Sytem to the Holocaust. His whole argument could be boiled down to "No China is great. But look at America and their evil war and their evil racism." That discussion was one rollercoaster trip.

MisterKallous

I wonder what would have happened if you asked about colourism in his country.

I_like_avocado

I brought it up and he argued that all reports of Xenophobia in China are lies of the western media, which btw according to him is run by 'The Jews™' to make China look bad.

MisterKallous

Ironically, the position of the middle man minorities in SEA is occupied by the ethnic Chinese. Like seriously, all you have to do is to change all mentions of Jewish in your stereotypical antisemitic stuffs with Chinese and you have what I encounter in Indonesia as a Chinese-Indonesian.

I_like_avocado

Jesus. But that guy was a nutjob. Sadly my experience with chinese (mostly over games) is pretty bad. Ive been called a sub-human pig that will get slaughterd and turned into soup meat once lmao. But ive had one experience with a chinese guy i met online and hes pretty chill so theres that.

MisterKallous

That's the thing actually. Most Chinese-Indonesians that I've interacted with are sane (as in they understand the bad stuff with Indonesian history involving Chinese-Indonesians but are still proud and content with being an Indonesian) but of course the loony ones (read very racist and ethno-nationalist) are the one that got stuck in my mind.

Prowindowlicker

Ah but then he wouldn’t be able to enjoy the freedoms of the US

megarockman12

That was the answer you get a prize

SleepyNervousBoi

It’s because these people are fundamentally know it all contrarians. It’s like the kid in high school who said he was a satanist because its taboo.

megarockman12

Dude what did you expect was gonna happen, when you violate us airspace?

MisterKallous

Now we have Chinese government official coping again on Twitter. Like hell, has this balloon been an actual high altitude balloon owned by someone legit in the USA and got lost, the USAF would still shot it down because of the risk it presents to air traffic.

megarockman12

Well Chinese government officials on Twitter have more copium than blood in their bodies

Optimus_Rhyme_82

I mean I don't think it was a spy balloon, I think it was an ecological study balloon for mapping the jet stream. Because they've got these drifting all over the world. I just think they didn't communicate with Us because China and America are at eachother's throats.

MisterKallous

Well at least it’s not the Norwegian Rocket Incident… for now

Optimus_Rhyme_82

Having read more I think I’m wrong, legitimately didn’t think they operated these in militaries.

MisterKallous

I only know that the US deployed aerostats for radar purposes in Iraq and Afghanistan before funding cuts caused them to be transferred to the Custom and Border Protection.

Sir_Reginald_Poops

I was wondering how long before tankies were going to say something incredibly stupid about it.

Liquid_Shogun

It’s a balloon Danny, drink some water and remember to breathe

imakuni1995

He's now at a point where he is even denying things the Chinese government has already admitted to

CamusCrankyCamel

Tune in next week for when the US looses the last of it’s credibility for the 531st time

bootmii

It was a trial balloon, what they wanted to know was how Americans and the US government would react. Now they know how to get a reaction from America.

Flying_mandaua

Incidents like this or the Przewodów missile are unavoidable during high international tension. They're high-profile but in reality not very important and they bear no actual threat to the national security of anyone, unless the side that has pre-planned a war will use them as casus belli. But talking about them over and over again only makes them seem more important and makes it look like we're on an edge of the abyss of doom and nuclear war. Big powers gonna be big powers, they're going to violate each other's airspaces etc. This incident carries no real implications.
