Even in Florida, it seems a lot of people don't know about St Pete so I've had to say I live in Tampa to people in Orlando and Jacksonville for instance to avoid the "where's that?" conversation.
Trust me, it's a good thing. We don't want the secret getting out. St. Pete is my favorite place on the east coast by a long shot. Will be moving back this summer come hell or high water.
I support the term "Tampa Bay" when referencing the area as a whole, and for our sports teams. Like "Tampa Bay has over 3 million residents" or "we have 3 major league sports teams in Tampa Bay."
I would never say "I live in Tampa Bay." I might say "Tampa Bay Area."
Why are we arguing click bait things like this vs agreeing that the pronoun for Tampa citizens is Tampon(s)?
Tampa Bay area. Tampa is the city. Not Tampa Bay.
I say Tampa Bay because a lot of people don't know about St. Pete outside of Florida.

I concur. Growing up in st Augustine just south of Jax, I never heard much about st Pete, but Tampa I did because of sports teams and Busch gardens
Technically I live in Odessa, Fl. so when anyone not familiar with the area asks where I live I say, “I live in The Tampa Bay Area.”

There’s the ‘Tampa Bay area’, and ‘Tampa proper’. Been that way for as long as I can remember.

I tell people I live in Oldsmar. When they ask what that is near, I say, "oh, it is just east of Palm Harbor..." and giggle when they nod knowingly.
I've lived in the Tampa Bay area all my life and I didn't even know people got upset about "Tampa Bay".
