Some interesting Swans related info in the ‘Trade Talk’ edition of ‘Road To The Draft’

Yeah I listened to that last night. Cal and Mitch are usually pretty good and knowledgeable so there is a probably a grain of truth to it. It's good to hear about Dawson and Stephens. They do also stress that is from sources outside the Swans, not from sources inside the Swans, a little clarification which is important, as it places the tight cap rumours in context, something a lot of other people wouldn't do and which they deserve credit for. I think at this point where there's smoke there's fire, and Hewett being in our top 25% this year would line up with the rumour that we were shopping him around last year to free up some cap space. I also suspect that Buddy's "discounted rate" for next year is probably already eaten up by backended contracts, so it might not be wise to consider that as an amount we can spend. It sounds like we're in a "one out, one in" kind of situation, rather than a "fire sale" situation. I think that puts us in a position where we need to consider departures. In that case I'd probably just let Reid walk. Apparently we paid him good money when we extended him in 2017 as that was when he hit RFA, so that should free up some space. With the emergence of McLean and Amartey he'd be the first one I'd let go to free up space. Hewett, well I'd also let him walk as well. He's good, but he's replaceable. The compo picks for both would probably let us move up the draft order to pick up another kid and would clear some space. On top of that, if Nathan Freeman plays the season out, we can potentially pick up him as a ready made midfielder if we need one, on a rookie contract via the draft. There are options.

If we're serious about going after Finn Maginness, then I would be happy to let Reid and maybe even Hewett walk. He was already getting parallels to JPK when he was drafted, so him coming to us after not getting much opportunity would be both hilarious and awesome. That kid has ridiculous upside and would be exactly the kind of contested footy beast we need, and who better to replace Kennedy than a kid that's been compared to him.

Maximumlnsanity

> If we're serious about going after Finn Maginness It was a Cleary suggestion, not something he'd heard rumours about

sparcleaf22

Pretty good suggestion tbh

Maximumlnsanity

Eh idk, I doubt Hawthorn would let him go cheaply after just 2 seasons

figjam11

Just read through and your last paragraph is almost exactly what I posted. 100% letting Reid go and offloading Hewitt would solve a lot of our issues

Maximumlnsanity

I still don't believe we ever shopped Hewett, or if we did it was only to get a killer return for Aliir. Yes he hasn't really been in our midfield plans since 2019 but he's doing well as a defender this year. Could he leave this year, yes because he's an RFA and we could easily get priced out, but I don't think we trade him unless he wants to leave. Our backline is shallow as piss anyway, it'd be dumb to trade out Hewett

SerialCouchAddict

It would be so out of character for us to mismanage our list that we need to let quality players walk. I think we're definitely in a situation where we let some players walk or shop them to allow us to sign more valued players (Reid and Hewett). Thats a standard part of any rebuilding list though. Move on your veteran players who aren't necessarily vital any more to make space for the youth. Edit: I've just had another thought that I wanted to add. All of these rumours are coming from other clubs, and the tightness seems to be based on the fact that we can't keep all of our players currently. Why is everyone operating under the assumption that were intending to keep all of these players in the first place?

taybon

The other assumption that we are making is that blokes like Hewett and Reid would be offered the same money on their next contract.

figjam11

If I remember correctly, Reid is paid quite well this contract. Surely letting him go frees us from being super tight in cap and allows us to resign Dawson and hopefully Stephens. Hewitt I think is overpaid based on value if he is top 25% so wouldn’t be too upset to see him shipped out too if necessary. I’d rather stephens than Hewitt going forward, even though I do like George

bigboymcevoyyyy

Stephens is stuck in our winger logjam. we have Florent, mcinerney, Stephens, Blakey. Stephens has been a bust

figjam11

How can you call him a busy already? The kid is only in his second season!

bigboymcevoyyyy

for a top 5 pick. he hasn't cemented himself in our spot. and since our midfield group is very young, it's gonna be hard for him. and we see that competition is stiff as Blakey is dropped to ressies (rightly so). and in the games that Stephens has played, he hasn't set the world on fire

sparcleaf22

None of what you said makes him a bust, it's still ridiculously early to call any player from the 2019 draft a bust. He was like 67kg when he came to us, and he's already built himself up to 76kg. Once he gets some more size to him, he'll be a really dangerous player. He's also putting up some really good numbers in the VFL week after week, he's basically in our top 5 best on ground every game.

Maximumlnsanity

> it's still ridiculously early to call any player from the 2019 draft a bust Except well... you know

sparcleaf22

Lol I forgot he existed

Maximumlnsanity

I wish I could lol

Meh-Levolent

I'd get rid of Florent. Doesn't use the ball well enough. We've put the time into him, but there is more upside with Stephens. We'd get a second round pick for him at least.

VBinMYblood

He's literally been one of our better ball users this season

Meh-Levolent

I disagree, but that's fine.

blunty94

Yeah it’s unfortunate but I think letting Reid and hewett walk might be what give us some wiggle room.

Meh-Levolent

Neither is a huge loss. They are both good players, but they were contracted on potential and they haven't lived up to that expectation so are now overpayed for the output they give us.

Riot_From_The_Couch

The last time we had so many players out of contract we were chasing a big fish. I can't see how our contract is super tight - if it is we've handled something poorly - but I believe we're tight because there is someone we are chasing

sparcleaf22

🤞Darcy Moore🤞

SkullKing_123

If you ask me with our defence getting monstered quite a few times by big tall opposition forwards I suggest we get taller down back but this is interesting none the less.
