VFL Match Thread - Sydney Swans v Gold Coast Suns - Kayo - 11am

Damn two weeks in a row we’ve faded out like that. Not ideal.
Joel Jeffrey with the winner on the siren. Fuck.
Jeffrey was excellent today, he deserves that goal.
Again we got off to a good start, but didn't play through to the final quarter. Disappointing result aside, there were some good individual performances from the boys.

I think this is the part where this year is going to really do wonders for our youngsters and build that depth after the lack of proper games in 2020. Gould, Stephens, Gulden, Campbell, etc are going to get a real step up from the NEAFL and be closer to the AFL level than if we had kept the NEAFL. This will hopefully mean less fadeouts next year as they all build that endurance base.
Been really impressed with how they're going and have been enjoying these games more than the AFL team for the last month tbh
There have definitely been some good moments, and I'm generally positive about the quality of the league and how it is helping our development, but I want to hold off judging it until the end of the season. I'm pretty keen to see the normal schedule restored so we can get a better idea of the quality.
Disappointing end there, but some decent performances from some of the listed players.
Yeah some of the fringe guys really put their hands up. I was pretty happy with that aspect.
It's been good to see good games from players that are pushing for senior selection,
McLean, O'Riordan, Stephens, Clarke, Ling, Blakey, Ronke, Ling, and Gray.
Gould, Brand, and O'Connor have been fairly decent as individuals, but they've worked well as a unit and they deserve a shout out for that. It's been tough defensively, especially when they've been facing the wind, but they've organised well and have moved the ball out of the back 50 well in challenging circumstances.
McAndrew is raw, but I can see why we picked him.
Keep an eye out for Morrison, I could see him being picked up by somebody in the rookie draft this year. He's a dangerous small forward. Hebron has been decent as well.
Also, I have to give a second shout out to Adam Gulden, he's the perfect captain for a VFL side.
McLean seems pretty good at kicking 3 or 4 goals a game, but I would love to see him take a VFL game by the scruff of the neck. He looks like he's capable of kicking 6 or 7.
Goal by Ronke to get us over 100 and give us a 10 point lead.
Great kick by Blakey there
I've liked Blakey today, he's worked himself into the game and has chosen his moments well.
Stephens could have been murdered receiving that hospital handball.
Yeah, that was terrible
The Suns came charging back this quarter and have 93-83 lead at 3/4 time. 8 goals to 2. They're a good VFL team now that they're getting players back into the senior lineup and their VFL team is improving as AFL listed players drop down.
However, the Swans are coming home with the wind in the final quarter, and the Suns have been making the most of the wind at their backs this quarter.
Ronke jogging off a bit sore. Hopefully it's just a corky or a twisted ankle. He's jogging, so it might not be too bad. But my heart stopped for a second. Don't want to lose Ronke and Sheather in the same game.
EDIT - Ronke looks like he's coming back on.
Tom Mitchell watching the game as well.
It'll be funny if he ever comes back to us
Considering our weakness at the contest last night, I'm only half joking when I say I wouldn't mind it.
Though I think we've got the young contested players to do the job without him, I wouldn't mind getting one more pure inside mid in the trade period for depth. He wouldn't need to be a gun, happy with a discard from another club, but just somebody that can step in and be that option.
I certainly wouldn't make it a focus of our trade period, but if an opportunity presented itself then I would like to see us take it.
He'd be a nice fit for the JPK shaped hole that will be left when he does eventually retire. I think Mills is still about 1-2 seasons away from becoming more comfortable playing that midfield role, Warner developing well along, Rowy has had a down year but it'll probably come out he's been battling some sort of injury this entire time, Parker is Parker. Question really is that next tier when they rotate out/come in when they're injured.
Clarke, Hewett, Florent, Blakey, JMac, Campbell, Gulden. It seems like a light midfield group, also between Florent, Blakey, and JMac, they're more outside mids. Hopefully we can feed some of these guys over the next few years to be able to compete against the Cripps, Walsh and Rowell's they'll be facing in the near future
Just coming back to this. You know who would be a handy pickup, and completely free, if we wanted to bolster our midfield on the cheap. Nathan Freeman. He was available for the MSD. He has the talent, and he apparently has the body that can stand up to the rigours of AFL footy. He'd also be a mature body ready to go rather than another 19 year old.
Cap 'im Horse!
70-44 at half time.
This has been a good game. The Suns haven't gone away in either quarter when the Swans have charged out to big leads to start both quarters. Swans are playing better, and are deserving of their lead.
This is exactly the sort of game I was hoping to see from the VFL boys. Some real hunger and obviously pushing for a senior spot.
Lewis Taylor is probably first cab off the rank to come in for wicks but ronke looks like giving horse something to think about their.
If Ronke plays like this for the second half and then next week, I think he has to come in.
I don’t necessarily disagree but Taylor has been in our best basically every week in the vfl and finally got upgraded to sub last night so it would be harsh to give him one game as a sub then let ronke go past him.
Very true on Taylor, and he'll also have VFL game to prove himself next week.
It should be noted that I also don't think we'll be limiting the changes to just one player, so Ronke and Taylor probably aren't competing for one spot.
Is sheather done for the day? Hope it’s not a bad injury as his form in the last couple of games has been great and I was starting to think he could make a senior debut at some point.
He hasn't been back since his injury, and it didn't look good. Bloody unfortunate timing.
Damn those two goals we gave up right before HT could be costly if Gold Coast can make a comeback.
McLean has been great. 3 goals already is a good haul. Clunking marks well.
Good goal by McLean. Number 3.
I'm really liking Gulden as the captain of the VFL side. He's the sort of veteran leader we need for a team that will always be young.
A fair few senior players and Dean Cox watching the game today as well which is good to see.
McLean is looking a little proppy at the moment, hopefully just a corky.
Some VFL players worth a shout out a Van Huisstede and Morrison at the moment. Geddes is showing a bit of hustle as well.
I thought Geddes was an emergency
He was. Sheather went off injured late in the first quarter so I'm assuming he was activated as a result.
I'm not clear on the medisub rules for the VFL but it would appear that they're a bit lax as I've seen something similar a few times.
Would have come in for Taylor
Good point. I didn't think Taylor was actually named, but I see that I missed him.
Good goals from McLean and Ronke. Jeez Ronke looks like he's happy to be back. I'm liking this from Stephens.
Swans up 38-20 at quarter time. Stephens has done some good things but also made some mistakes. Clarke has been lively. Sinclair as well. Gould, COR, O'Connor, and Ling have worked well getting the ball out of the backline and have defended decently. Ronke has popped up a bit to good effect and McAndrew appears to be playing in the forward line.
Ronke in the middle alongside Clarke and Gray is an interesting experiment.
Looks like he’s starting this quarter forward
He looks lively too. If he can do this next weekend he might be a straight swap for Wicks wihle he's suspended.
Yeah I’ve been impressed, that was a really classy goal before. He also looks so strong, looks to have bulked up a bit
Just got back from doing the shopping in time for the rest of the first quarter and somebody has gone down in pain.
Fuck. That's Sheather and he looks like he's done his shoulder.
Stephens has very average skills for a top 5 pick outside midfielder
I don’t know about that, I think he puts himself under pressure by biting off too much which rushes his disposals at times. But I think his fundamental skills are good.
His skills are very average. Even when not on the run. Not a penetrating kick, tidy enough I suppose from 15-35. But so are most state leaguers.
Couple that with woeful decision making, awareness and smarts and you get a poor kid that’s a mile off the pace
Yeah I think he's been instructed to take the game on whenever he gets the chance. Considering he has the ability to do that I think it's the right instructions for him. Playing like that he will make mistakes, but he needs to work through them and learn from them.
Yeah I feel like his improvement is visible, things are starting to come off more often. I think things will just progressively click more and more.
So looks like Blakey is playing in defence which is interesting
It looks like we're trying him in a few different spots this season. I don't mind that actually.
We should be making quite a few changes after the bye so this game will be crucial to the guys pushing for selection
