Who's still on the table? Updated free agents list revealed

dazedjosh

Our list hasn't changed yet, but it's good to keep an eye on ours and others in case we have some interest in picking up freebies at the end of the season. Looks we have 20ish players out of contract at the end of the season. UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS * Sam Reid * Luke Parker * Robbie Fox * Sam Gray * Kaiden Brand RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS * George Hewett

CowFos

I wonder what a realistic outcome for Sam Reid is. I doubt they would just delist him, and I doubt many clubs would be interested in him (except maybe Collingwood) given his injury history. Probably just a one or two year mid range contract? He’s been good this year when he’s played but he’s so often injured and we have pretty good tall stocks now, although there is a bit of a gap between people like Sinclair, Reid and Buddy and raw prospects like McLean, Amartey and McDonald.

dazedjosh

Reid and Sinclair, and by extension the Swans, are now in really interesting positions after the Naismith injury and emergence of Amartey and McLean. The KPP spots on our list are in a massive state of flux. At first glance, we should keep one of Reid or Sinclair now that Naismith has gone down, perhaps even both of them. But we paid Reid very well on his last contract, he was hitting free agency for the first time and was coming off the back of a few good seasons as Buddy's sidekick. Apparently it was in the 500-800k range. I also wonder how much Sinclair was on when we signed him as he's been our only fit ruck for a couple of years and could command a decent salary off us. I don't think Sinclair physically has any desire to go round again, and I suspect he will retire, but Reid might have some value to the right team. Thanks to Amartey, McLean, and McDonald, we now have a bit of room to move and get creative. For example, we could have a chat with Mabior Chol, who is only 24 and has real talent, while letting Reid and Sinclair walk. Chol is UFA, and with the money left over after Reid and Sinclair go would more than cover his contract, while leaving some left over for extending others. Considering the article about Reid the other week, it might be that we're trying to drum up some interest for him so we could get a third rounder for him via free agency compensation. A pick that we probably wouldn't take to the draft, but would likely package up and trade to a team that needs points in order to get a higher quality pick. Apparently the Suns are already talking to Chol, so he's not opposed to moving away from Victoria, which is another big plus, and his age would fit in well with our list profile. I suspect our KPP moves this summer could shape quite a few moves league wide.

Meh-Levolent

Yeah, agree that Sinclair is probably done. It does leave us very thin in the ruck department though, so you would think we would chase a genuine ruck/forward who could play as lead ruck if needed. It makes sense to try to get someone like Chol who can cover Reid as well and let Reid go elsewhere.

dazedjosh

At the moment we could be looking at Naismith, Reid, and Sinclair all out for next season, with the only big man being brought in being McAndrew, who won't be ready this year and probably not next year either. Considering Chol is only 24 I'd be happy to pursue him and let Reid and Sinclair go, while drafting another big man in the rookie draft. It would leave us physically mature options in Hickey, Chol, Amartey, and McLean, with McAndrew and a draftee as the young backups.

Meh-Levolent

I agree. The only thing then is that leaves us quite short, with only Hickey over 2m, other than McAndrew, who I can't see playing until 2023.

dazedjosh

Chol is 2m according to his Richmond profile. But it would certainly be something to consider. I think a lot of that will depend on the rest of the season and the young blokes continuing to develop. If O'Connor looks good to go then he could take a KPD spot and give us more flexibility, allowing us to delist Brand and target somebody over 2m via draft, trade, or fa.

Maximumlnsanity

I genuinely think North should offer him a 2 year deal just to have someone to take the #1 KPD every week and protect the youth

CowFos

The only problem with that is that it’s a toss of the coin whether he’s on the park or not. It will either work well or not at all. I guess they probably have the cap space to take a chance though. Worst case he could mentor their young KPPs (at both ends to an extent tbh) off field.

Maximumlnsanity

Yeah of course the injury history would be a major deterrent but frankly I think he's the best KPF on the market not named JJK and it's not like overpaying for him would hurt North

VBinMYblood

How in the actual fuck is George Hewett earning more than Luke Parker?????

Maximumlnsanity

He's not, Parker's just played more than 10 years

VBinMYblood

Right, didn’t even know that was part of the criteria

stavraki

20ish players? Is that standard at this point in a season, that feels like a big chunk of the list!

dazedjosh

We're not top of the list for re-signings that's for sure. We usually extend players around the bye. A lot of the guys that are still to re-sign are fringe players, so it's not the end of the world and allows us a certain amount flexibility.

Maximumlnsanity

Lock down Parker, Fox, and Georgie. The rest can walk

PluggersLeftBall

re-sign parker, re-sign hewett, reid as well as long as he doesnt want too much i guess. Everyone else i dont really mind

chngminxo

I reckon if we have to make tough choices we’re trading Hewett so we can keep Dawson.

4nyonbthhytnhklnr

As many others have mentioned, Parker/Fox/Hewett the priorities. Reid would be nice to keep but needs to be not near the 25% earners really. Gray is almost definitely gone and Taylor is probably a pretty low chance of staying

blunty94

So I think our list is pretty simple. Gray is gone. Fox and brand are expendable but solid options who should be offered another presumably cheap contract. Reid and hewett would be nice to keep if they will both take big pay cuts but if they won’t we can lose them without too many issues. And Parker can have as much as we can pay him as far as I’m concerned. The real interesting bit is looking at the guys on other clubs lists. Who do you guys think we should make some offers for? We would almost certainly be no chance for these two but we should be making a call about Tarrant and talia. Unlikely they would leave their clubs but if they did they both fill our most obvious hole as big KPD. Astbury is arguably the best playing on the list I could see leaving his team. If they win a fourth flag this year he might be due a payday and depending on what we can offer if we can give him a pay day to come to Sydney I wouldn’t be against it. Wallis is another interesting one. I don’t know if we actually have a place for him or if he would have the same problem here as the dogs but his a good player who can’t get a game at one of the best teams in the league so could be lured away. Whether it be as a midfielder or a forward I’m not sure. And lastly chol and Archie smith. I think both fit our age demographic and have scope for improvement. Neither would be walking into our best 22 but could play their way in pretty quickly and shouldn’t cost to much.

dazedjosh

I would only be looking at the younger guys on the available list. Chol, maybe Ballenden, etc. Older blokes like Tarrant or Talia don't really hold any appeal personally. Astbury isn't going anywhere, but he's also the wrong side of 30. With our list I suspect Fox will be prioritised over Brand. Fox is on the rookie list and can spend 2 more seasons on there, with a portion of his salary falling outside of the cap, until he turns 30. Brand we could replace with a younger defender if that happens. Fox can move as a UFA, but unless he gets a big offer he couldn't say no to, I would expect him to stay as he provides good depth. We still need to re-sign Dawson, who should be our number 1 priority, but he isn't a free agent yet so we do have some leverage. Hewett deserves a decent contract, he's best 22. Like Fox, I don't think clubs will come calling with a massive offer, but he might get some interest. After Dawson he's our number 2 priority for mine. I think Reid and Sinclair are probably gone with the emergence of Amartey, McLean, and McDonald. At the very least I wouldn't be surprised if we heard they're being shopped around. That would free up a nice chunk of space in our cap to go along with the likely discount Kennedy gave us and the 500k we're getting from Franklin's contract downsizing, but signing other players may depend on how much we've backended other contracts for some of our younger guys to fit them in.

blunty94

Yeah keeping our current list together should generally be the main priority as we already have most of the pieces we need to compete. I would’ve agreed with you this time last year regarding the age of some of the guys I suggested but based on how we have played this year I genuinely think with the natural development of our young list if we added a senior player to slot in at fullback next year like talia or tarrant we could potentially compete for the flag next year.
