Catch a cab or risk destroying a $60,000 Ute + fine + lose licence + possible injury to oneself and others Nah save $25 and risk it.....

bluesix

Double demerits started at midnight as well. Dude is going to be in a world of pain.

xdr01

He probably need to drive for work, so might lose his job. He's seriously screwed, hence doing a runner. He had the sense at point to know what's he facing but not before. Insurance doesn't cover drunk driving, so down $60k and NCB. So all his Insurance will be crazy expensive. Then all court stuff All to save on cab fair, fucking Idiot

shityeahdude

The reason people do the runner. There's no way to prove the driver was under the affects of anything. They go home, sleep it off and say "I panicked" Sure they might cop a fine or two, but at least insurance still covers it.

jakethemate

Closer to $50+ for a lot of people

dazedjosh

Is that Northbridge?

sydneybluestreet

I actually think it's technically Cammeray. OP said it was on the south side of the Suspension Bridge.

bluesix

Looks like here: https://goo.gl/maps/pa29rQNKrHgYQXY16 South bound at the start of Miller St after the bridge.

Rogue_Vaper

It is the smart move to bail if no one is hurt. Hide out til your bac is 0 & get done for neg driving & leaving the scene of an accident. Far better than going dui. Both punishment & insurance wise. That said don't drink drive. It does kill.

TalkBackJUnk

This is why the punishment for abandoning a crash scene should be higher than the maximum punishment for drink driving. Also; we're not in America. Stop saying DUI.

Hughjarse

More context please. How do we know he was drunk and pulled a runner?

Augusstus

I was about to write the story in the comments. We woke up at 2:30am to a huge crash sound. Jumped out of bed and ran to the door and heard a neighbour shouting at the driver who just got out and started running up the street. Walked over and the power line had been taken down as he hit the post (you can see the wood being cut up in the photo). Called the cops and ambo. Went back to bed and woke up to chainsaws. Car was still there and half the street was blocked off. Assuming he was drunk as just last month a drunk driver did the same thing but hit the tree in the image. Waited for the cops and got taken to the station.

Hughjarse

Thanks for backstory.

IReplyToCunts

> Assuming he was drunk as just last month a drunk driver did the same thing If I was a lawyer I'd be like... So he wasn't drunk, you just assumed he was drunk based on your bias of shitty drivers who happen to smash into that spot? Also how are you so sure it was a he? It's night time, you just awoke, are you telling me you're capable of identify this person at night while they're running away. Judge I think our witness is unreliable. SHUT UP I'm NOT UNRELIABLE I SAW EVERYTHING and I WASN'T ASLEEP. Oh what were you doing... *looks at wifey*...I was cheating on my wife... Sir you're cheating on your wife in your own home? With whom could you be cheating with... *looks at daughter*. Case Closed.

thierryweedman

Stupidly I lost my licence for drink driving 2 years ago Bad time of my life but still no excuses at all Definitely not worth it This fellas life will be screwed for a while 😳

SirBoboGargle

You get to see more of the city on the bus. Always a silver lining.

TalkBackJUnk

Lots of time for reading on the train! Maybe start with reading about how drink driving is fucking stupid.

sydneybluestreet

You probably put a fair bit of money into the pockets of taxi and uber drivers. You made them happy at least.

thierryweedman

Plus a nice interlock from the RMS Just don’t drink and drive, it will ruin your fuckin life and most importantly FREEDOM Driving is a privilege not a right Got my full licence back last month after 2 years on the interlock program, 9months disqualification / 1800 fine / 2k on lawyer / permanent driving record / oh plus Conviction records Got in my car after drinking all night with a mate ( yes I know I could of killed him as well ) and got pulled over 500 meters from my house driving to the pub which is 1km from my house Writing about this fucked choice helps me somewhat move on I was a fuckin idiot plain and simple Haven’t had a drop of booze in over 2 years now as well Don’t drink and drive please!!!!!!!!!!!!

tommy42O69

My cousin got busted the morning after a session we had. You need to be careful with that as well. Even if you get a section 10 (which is by no means guaranteed), its still a big whack of legal fees, not to mention endangering anyone unfortunate enough to be sharing the roads with you.

impyandchimpy

As someone looking to buy an Amarok but can't because of the currently obscene prices for both used and new cars, it is sad to see one written off by an absolute clown who thought it was ok to drink and drive.

calski19

Those are pretty badass looking trucks.

sarg_m

I bought a brand new Tiguan this week from the dealer's stock. Paid RRP and they threw in the 5 years prepaid servicing. Only down side was very limited colour choices.

impyandchimpy

Tiguan’s are great, we have a 162TSI R-Line! Such a nice interior!

sarg_m

I love the tech features but the interior is nothing flash and the 20 inch wheels are harsh as

impyandchimpy

Oh really? What are you comparing to? Outside of a Q5 I think it’s the nicest styled interior in its class. Other car is an S3 with firm suspension so the 20s on the Tiguan feel smooth in comparison 😂

sarg_m

We had a 2014 XC90 previously.

Augusstus

Any idea how much that car costs? I'm not sure what it is but it seems to be a decent buck.

impyandchimpy

$65k retail price, demo models going for around $75-80k atm It's a Highline 580 model

quick_dry

they're not bad for covering distance, a friend in Namibia has one we took out and around the dunes and through the safari parks. But take the stock tyre wrench and throw it in the rubbish for a decent 4-way brace - that stock thing is so weak and angled badly it deforms just cranking it by hand (being in 4WD places and unable to change a tyre is less than ideal)

jamsan920

Wake up in the morning, call the cops saying your truck was stolen and you just noticed it, profit??

sydneybluestreet

Unfortunately for the driver, if he was planning the fraud you suggest, there was a witness who saw him run off.

Puzzleheaded-Pie-277

Who can’t actually ID him properly most likely.

supfren

I know a guy who did this. He drove home drunk, crashed the car, then went home and lied to the cops that the car was stolen. I don't know how his story unravelled but he ended up losing his insurance claim cause the theft story didn't hold up and the insurance companies don't pay if you lie to them.

EmeraldHorse02

He probably forgot that license plates exist

sydneybluestreet

Are you saying it's smart to run away if you have a single vehicle accident while drunk?

EmeraldHorse02

Lol true but if I was drunk enough to crash I’d probably start running and fall in a hole or something

sydneybluestreet

Is this near the Suspension Bridge?

Augusstus

Yep on the south side.

sarg_m

He walked (ran) away? Modern cars have come so far in terms of safety and survivability

PrestigiousWater

Those things are the size of a small house. They’re obscenely large. It’s not much wonder.

sarg_m

Look at that deformed frame, 20 years ago he would have a big donk in his lap

Augusstus

Yea it was crazy. I got to the door no later than 2mins and he was gone. Didn’t even see a shadow. Only the neighbour saw first cause she was looking out the window rather than running to her door. Crazy he can not be totally dazed.

Sol1dshot

Probably just waiting for a mate.

42wheels

RBT means you need a Plan B* *Plan B: get shot out of a cannon in the rough direction of home

BobAteMyShoes

If you duh with a huge truck like this, penalty should be doubled. Fuck him.

tommy42O69

100%. Utes handle and brake terribly and yet they're inevitably driven by aggressive bogans so invariably shit like this happens. I remember the cops used to harass people with things like Silvias or Skylines with noisy exhausts, but utes with ridiculous lift kits, tyres outside the guards, bullbars with illegal protrusions etc get a blind eye. They are far more dangerous to other road users than a noisy exhaust.

voidwolf

I dare say you're a little miss informed here. The vehicle above is a stock standard VW amarok 580. No visible mods or lift. This is one of the dual cabs that handles better on road than most cars. **The driver was simply drunk, don't blame an unrelated group of people for his stupidity.** Re the people you've targeted: I'm not saying they're always legal however if one does increase their tyre size they've typically acheived more traction as a result of more rubber on the road. This is why 4wd's put on bigger tyres -more traction. Illegal bar work is extremely rare. It's not something you'll see every day. No one installs it and it's a lot of effort to modify to become illegal. Illegal lift is common however vehicles like this tend to have the acceleration of a loaded truck. It's hard getting these up to speed and drivers are generally aware of the risks and tend not to do stupid shit on road with them -the vehicle is their pride and joy. Most 4wd owners are well aware their vehicles are not made for on road performance and drive accordingly.

tommy42O69

I was talking in generalities, not in regards to this crash specifically. As for the Amarok, no, they do not handle or brake better than most cars. CarAdvice tested this - the Amarok took 41.6m. Most cars can brake from 100km/h in the mid to high 30m range. May not sound like much, but it could mean the ute hits something 50km/h faster than the car. It is good by the standard of a ute, but poor by the standard of a car. Ultimately you can't overcome the physics - it is much heavier than most cars. The other point is that when they do crash, they will do more damage than a car which is both lower and lighter. Most lifted utes have muddies on them - which as the name suggests, are useful for mud traction. They handle terribly on tarmac - there is a reason performance road tyres do not have massive tread blocks on them. For bar work, the number of rod holders I see (illegal) suggests differently. I will agree to disagree with you on the point of the drivers - obviously this is subjective, but more than just about any group of vehicles, I see utes being driven aggressively.

mrk240

What an absolute load of bs. Sure it might have been the 'sporty' version of the Amarok but it will handle like shit compared to a car of comparable purchase price. On your other points, big 35" mudders with massive side walls will have significantly less grip the their smaller road specific counterpart. I'd love to know the amount of 4x4s on the road that ADR compliant bull bars etc, probably only a small handful. I see many lifted 4x4s getting driven as though they're a sports car so I don't know what your on about. There's this one particular p plater with a lifted Hilux with big exhaust in my area that drives like loon especially when it's wet. Cunt needs his car taken off him before he crashes into someone

Red-Engineer

inb4 "Hello police? um yeah my car was.... stolen last night."

SnooApples3402

Probably someone from the Northbridge progress society who was angry at a new barricade for safety.... thought I'll show these young wipersnappers and demolish the barricade!
