Recently I've read Tumiso Mashaba's biography, "A father is born" and thought it was an excellent book by a local author. I was wondering what some of my fellow kaapse mense se gunstelling boeke is? Preferably by local authors as I'm trying to read more of them. And before anyone comments, yes, I know Tolkien's from Bloemfontein and yes I've read LOTR.

Sarah King "Killing Caroline". She's one of the radio hosts at Cape talk.
Just finished Killing Kebble by Mandy Wiener and South Africa is a movie.
> I know Tolkien's from Bloemfontein He was not *from* Bloemfontein and he was never South African. Nitpicking...
Really? I thought he was
He was only born in Bloemfontein to English parents, who were stationed there for a short while (his father to represent the England bank he worked for). He was barely 3 years old when they returned to England and never came to SA again. So I guess it depends on your definition of where one is from. Where you are born? Where you grew up? Your nationality? The definition I said above, is to illustrate that no, SA cannot claim Tolkien as a "local" author. At all.
For fiction: Deon Meyer and Mike Nichols if you're into crime thrillers. Lauren Beukes for a fantasy/thriller/crime mix. Zakes Mda for beautifully-written descriptive stories.
Thank you, great suggestions!
