If i was Italian i would be disgusted that i lost that game. Even if is just a Nations league game, thats a list all time unbeaten streak vs Germany in official games
Do you reckon he will? My in depth analysis of “Darwin Nunez | All Goals 2021/22 | Welcome to Liverpool | Potential to be Special” has pushed me to the conclusion that 95% of his goals are a result of calamitous Primeira Liga defending.
Did alright in the CL too obviously but I wasn’t 85m impressed.
He most likely won't flop because Klopp is a fantastic manager and will improve some of the flaws he has
Plus the guy has amazing workrate, never stops running and gives everything he can for the club
Check Porto's [goal](https://youtu.be/qTBoW6rvBqU) v Benfica that gave them the league title, fella was the only one who bothered to run.
He's tall which helps, but he's jumping reach is also incredible, which means he can't be stopped when jumping
His heading can very much improve though, sometimes he misses easy headers and other times he scores almost impossible headers
I didn't even realise the England game was on at all until I started channel surfing out of boredom. Wonder what sort of viewing figures they pull compared to international friendly games.
Building a boring defensive framework to play football under because defensive teams usually win tournaments is putting the cart in front of the horse.
You need a team that can play aggressively and win games but have the ability to sit back when they need to, which they will need to at the world cup. You can't just start defensively and think it'll always work.
For me, England do not have a good enough passing midfield to win the World Cup that way in the modern game. You need a calming influence. Rice, Bellingham, Mount, Phillips, Henderson, Gallagher etc. all fantastic players in their own way, but they do not know how to slow the game down
Henderson can do a job at controlling the tempo (as he sometimes has to for Liverpool) but he's absolutely not skilled at it the same way a guy like Thiago is.
It's kind of wild how weak our midfield is given that our last generation of midfielders included Gerrard, Beckham, Lampard, and Scholes. Bellingham is the only one who seems like he might possibly be on the same level as those 4.
Manages to do it for the only club in European football who made all their available finals this year, more than good enough to do the same job for England.
When he's with England he's playing alongside players who could only dream of playing at the level he plays at club level. Sterling, Stones, Chilwell, Mount and Walker are the only people who have any idea.
Defensive teams do not win tournaments. They did it twice in the past 22 years. Portugal+Greece were both flashes in the pan.
The rest would have more of the ball, which England do not against good teams.
When people use the saying "atack wins games, defence wins titles" is more towards league type competitions
Normaly, the league winners are the best defence of the league, managing to grind 1-0 results that give the same 3 points as a 5-0
What are your wildest football theories? Mine is that without Klopp coming into the picture Germany never wins the World Cup. Klopp brought the heavy counter pressing and high line tactics to Dortmund that took German football by storm and changed it forever. In turn Jupp Heynckes optimised his Bayern to make them a pressing machine and won the treble with them. Next year at the World Cup, Germany with Löw and Flick used these tactics as blueprint as the players were already accustomed to them.
Klopp didn't invent pressing. The turning point for Germany adopting new points of view and focusing on youth development was their disastrous 2004 euro
I wouldn't ascribe that to Klopp/Heynckes, really.
Germany under Löw evolved from a side happy to sit back and hit teams on the break in 2008 and 2010 towards a side looking to dominate possession from 2012 onwards - and part of that idea is winning the ball back high up the pitch and not letting your opponent have a breather with the ball. That type of heavy pressing was what Barcelona under Guardiola and Spain during their glory years employed, so it was hardly a new idea in 2012.
Klopp was just one part of a more general trend in German football. It's not like he literally invented high line Gegenpressing, he just helped to popularize it. But the foundations were there before him. Most of of the German players that won the WC weren't really influenced by Klopps style
Wasn't all that much pressing in 2008/2010 tbf - there's a pronounced shift in style leading up to 2012 where Germany started looking to dominate possession rather than sit back and hit teams on the break.
I think your point is right but you miss the main point: Dortmund gave Bayern a huge shock with these two seasons and without those they don't recover to win 10 titles in a row and 2 triples.
It's not even a theory it's kinda accepted.
How are England *so bad* right now, during the nation's League? Genuinely. To go from a Euro final team to this in less than a year? What changed?
Is it just fixture congestion in the prem affecting players? Have the tactics changed?
Very few of the top teams are looking good during this international break, really - I wouldn't put too much stock into it, given that everyone's playing teams about their level rather than getting that one easy friendly in which you just smash some poor minnows.
Fatigue is definitely a factor I reckon, the players basically played for 18 months straight without a rest by now.
I think our euro final and world cup semi final both made us look much much better than we are.
If you look at the teams we played, we only beat one elite team in both those tournaments and they were playing their worst football of the last 20 years.
We have great players but we're absolutely not a great team.
Tactics seem to change every game, with little continuity. Which is understandable when this is the last opportunity to test new players, and a long season has just ended.
I still can't believe Croatia had 2 CBs from Spezia and Dinamo Zagreb in their first caps absolutely dominate France's and Denmark's attackers 2 games in a row
no, I think they're solid, but they're weaker than us
they've had great results over the past few years, but they have their limitations, but then again, which team doesn't?
I'm sorry but you will never convince me to use the match threads instead of this one. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they exist purely to keep the mentally insane away from the rest of us, but it's unhealthy to even go near one. It's as if you were watching the game in a cinema full of drunk uncles who are 100% confident they know better than everyone else.
Is Shaw hurt? Playing right footed fullbacks at Left Back is almost always dreadful. Happy Chilwell wasn’t rushed into this camp but Southgate can’t keep doing this
Fucking hell, I the recoup for that hurts.
Hopefully once he's had some time out, he'll come out stronger. Disappointing this season but he was brilliant last season.
Hungary have got sone really good players coming through and this hey should have done better in the qualifying ganes . The future looks good for Hungary.
Possibly Denmark, Hungary, Spain and Netherlands qualifying for the final 4
Quite unexpected to see some teams there (mainly Hungary and Netherlands), this is what makes the Nations League brilliant
Recently came to the realisation that Hungary are actually a quality team, they’re going through something of a golden generation themselves. Have no idea if they qualified for the World Cup but I’ve got them down as a dark horse anyway, they’re gonna surprise a lot of big teams. This Sally dude’s got a bright future ahead of him. Forza Hungary
They've surprised me this international break, yeah - a handful of handy players, a very clear idea and some great cohesion probably won't make you a top team, but it definitely makes you good enough to piss in a top team's cornflakes.
Today, Beatriz Cameirão, a Benfica Womens team player, announced she won’t be renewing her contract with the club to focus on her education
It’s unfortunate that Womens football is still very underappreciated and forces players to leave their dream behind because, at this time, it’s a huge risk betting it all on football and not having the money to live in case you don’t succeed
There's probably hundreds of them almost every week - and we only get two pins. They're flaired, they're searchable, and you can sort the subreddit chronologically to find the threads - it's about the best we can do, really, given we can only have two pinned threads at any given time.
7 minutes in, England haven't scored.
I am beside myself, the flags are in the bin, the Stellas have gone into the fridge.
If football is coming home, he's got my adress wrong.

I wouldn't blame him for feeling anxious about the reception he might get when he plays for England, but I do hope you're right.
They’ll lose to Switzerland in the groups or to Portugal or Uruguay in the last 16. Even if they somehow make the quarters they would have Germany or Spain I don’t see it
That’s not really how it works. They’re a decent side and yeah they could make a bit of a run but predicting them to finish third is one of those “throw everything at the wall and if it sticks come back and act like a genius” takes IMO.
By the same logic you might as well say the other 3 semi finalists will be Japan, Senegal and Colombia
Colombia didn’t qualify lol
Plus you’re taking it too seriously lad, everyone has a wild guess before these tournaments commence, who can forget Turkey being “Dark Horses” for Euro 2020?
That’s my point, it’s completely unrealistic.
There’s a difference between a dark horse (which is a team who will do better than people expect and surprise everyone) and outright saying that a team who will struggle to even get out of the group are going to finish third. As someone else said, if they do get through over Switzerland they’re almost certainly playing either Uruguay or Portugal, and then likely Spain or Germany. That’s a really tough side of the draw
Costa Rica got a second round draw of Greece (and still needed penalties to get past them).
There’s also a big difference between dreamland and “I’m feeling 3rd”.
Costa Rica did top a group consisting of England, Uruguay and Italy tbf.
Not to mention they went that whole WC unbeaten.
Also isn’t a SF spot “dreamland” for Serbia? I think it is.
I can't believe the club finally got player who can retain the ball against a press, regain possession and carry it up the pitch.
Most obvious hole in our team from a tactical perspective now filled.
So happy.
Why is it that at the first sign of teams being close on a fee everyone just acts like a transfer is done now. I said the same about de Jong to United last week and got told I was an idiot for not believing talksport’s “player has said he’d go there” as a guarantee that a move was already finalised. Did we learn nothing from Mbappe
No it doesn’t, it has the BBC saying a fee is agreed. That’s a long way from done. They say it’s subject to personal terms being agreed with the player. That’s a very big step in a transfer
What?
That's an entirely different case?
The personal terms were the only thing that needed to be agreed as he would've left on a free.
This is a complete non issue in this case, 99% of the time.
Liverpool themselves posted pictures of Fekir in a Liverpool shirt…
I’m not saying it won’t happen, but people are way too quick to decide that a deal is done
What bothers me about Nunez is that he will obviously succeed. Even if his goal scoring isn't that great next year, the system will carry him. System matters so much these days.
I'm very curious how a striker who isn't scoring goals is going to be carried by the system unless he's like a Firmino who is doing other things well (and a big part of the system itself)
He'll score more than he would of at United for example. Being slotted into a well oiled machine can make average players look good, and good players amazing.
just remembered when we released carlton cole, spent all summer searching for a new striker only to be turned down by literally every one and then the morning after deadline day we just re signed carlton cole again
Can someone link me to the post for Özils goal against Ludogorets? Trying to find it but cant.
Hahahahahhahh my body is dying but what a display. Brilliant and emphatic as ever Gareth. Im sure it'll be a splendid showing come November
If i was Italian i would be disgusted that i lost that game. Even if is just a Nations league game, thats a list all time unbeaten streak vs Germany in official games
Sorry but that Darwin photo of him signing the contract looks terribly photoshopped Here's hoping he flops
Cuz his photo is bad? lol I know thats not the reason but "This photo sucks, I hope he's shit" is a fun mental image.
Do you reckon he will? My in depth analysis of “Darwin Nunez | All Goals 2021/22 | Welcome to Liverpool | Potential to be Special” has pushed me to the conclusion that 95% of his goals are a result of calamitous Primeira Liga defending. Yeah fair point, how is he in the air? Liverpool have been gagging for someone to get on the end of Trent’s 500 crosses per game
He's tall which helps, but he's jumping reach is also incredible, which means he can't be stopped when jumping His heading can very much improve though, sometimes he misses easy headers and other times he scores almost impossible headers
Darwin scores goals for fun ~~against a 9 side B SAD team~~
does anyone else completely forget that these Nations League games are on until like 30 mins into the match
I didn't even realise the England game was on at all until I started channel surfing out of boredom. Wonder what sort of viewing figures they pull compared to international friendly games.
Every time. Then I started watching Southgateball for 5 mins before I noticed Italy vs Germany was on.
Someone's mistakenly put a pic of a dancer on the sub reddit's thumbnail.
That's Sporting's Legend Nani, making a little celebretory dance while downing Loures 1-0

Nations League init
Surely at least one or two from the major European sides will pick form before the World Cup? My money is on Spain and England
I still can't believe Croatia had 2 CBs from Spezia and Dinamo Zagreb in their first caps absolutely dominate France's and Denmark's attackers 2 games in a row
Stanisic pocketed Mbappe
oh and that too
Is this sub back to criminally overrating Denmark?
no, I think they're solid, but they're weaker than us they've had great results over the past few years, but they have their limitations, but then again, which team doesn't?
People here do seem to rate them highly, but it's more of a plucky underdog than actual contender situation.
Maybe, I’m just worried it was beyond obnoxious during the euros. Screamed of redditors trying to prove they know more
For every Denmark "I told you so" there are 200 people who claimed Turkey were the dark horse so don't read too much into it.
Can anyone explain why Italy keep playing with these random procedurally generated Fifa players?
They don't play any important tournaments soon so might aswell try new players.
Might as well try to win the nations league tho
I'm sorry but you will never convince me to use the match threads instead of this one. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they exist purely to keep the mentally insane away from the rest of us, but it's unhealthy to even go near one. Agree, I’d rather stay here and not talk about the game than go in there
Arsenal fans trying to tell me Ramsdale is elite will never not be funny
Elite?! He’s an above average shot stopper but wow.
Below average*
He really isn’t statistically
Man could have a ball rolling 1mph to his feet and make it look like a world class save
He’s like the opposite of someone like OG Ronaldo. Somehow the eye test actually doesn’t really tell the story
Is Shaw hurt? Playing right footed fullbacks at Left Back is almost always dreadful. Happy Chilwell wasn’t rushed into this camp but Southgate can’t keep doing this
Yes he got the metal bolts in his leg removed.
Fucking hell, I the recoup for that hurts. Hopefully once he's had some time out, he'll come out stronger. Disappointing this season but he was brilliant last season.
Yeah he was probably our best player last season, and im hopeful that Ten Hag can get him back to those levels.
Ah. Good for him
Hungary have got sone really good players coming through and this hey should have done better in the qualifying ganes . The future looks good for Hungary.
Possibly Denmark, Hungary, Spain and Netherlands qualifying for the final 4 Quite unexpected to see some teams there (mainly Hungary and Netherlands), this is what makes the Nations League brilliant
>(mainly Hungary and Netherlands) Excuse me you're talking about a 2019 nations league finalist here
What happened in that final again 🤭
We gained valuable experience from a glorified friendly
Recently came to the realisation that Hungary are actually a quality team, they’re going through something of a golden generation themselves. Have no idea if they qualified for the World Cup but I’ve got them down as a dark horse anyway, they’re gonna surprise a lot of big teams. This Sally dude’s got a bright future ahead of him. They didn’t qualify for the World Cup, they finished 4th in their group with 17 points, behind the great Three Lions, Poland and Albania
What a shame. If they could score against England imagine how many they’d put past a team like Portugal
We score 3 against them.
That was the old Hungary though, not golden generation Hungary
Hmmm, makes sense
I praise England and this is what I get? I'm distraught and feeling betrayed
Sorry my friend, Southgate has trained me to always be on the defensive
Understandable
They didn't...
They were in a group with England to be fair so can’t hold it against them. Gonna throw 20 quid on them to win Euro 2024
Sandbagging before the World Cup Southgate is a genius
New Zealand - Costa Rica you’ve served me well, looks like I’ll be watching the Three Lions
the more southgate ball i’m subjected to the more i desire to claim i’m brightonian not english
Abolish uefa competitions, give the big clubs the super league they want and let the others play in their domestic leagues and cups
Burnley with a black manager what a time to be alive, first that fan at the spurs game now this.
John Stones now has more England caps than Gareth Southgate, Jimmy Greaves and Paul Gascoigne.
How many premier leagues have those donkeys won
I hope Darwin can _evolve_ into a player with a better first touch. Get it? 😃
...
I'm tired Robbie. He's scoring 35 tho

Fiorentina unwilling to pay the 15 million euros for their best midfielder this season. Cba with these stingy Italian wankers anymore.
This is top 10 injustices in world football material im witnessing here between Costa Rica and the Kiwis
7 minutes in, England haven't scored. I am beside myself, the flags are in the bin, the Stellas have gone into the fridge. If football is coming home, he's got my adress wrong.
Least reactionary England fan.
Uhhhh

I see the Germans are at least consistent in their efforts to have no fun.
Get the Stella’s back out. You can never have enough of them.
Why is southgate such a sakasexual man's played him every game, expect mount to come on later too ffs.
Afraid that arsenal fans will start crying.
Arsenal fans want Saka to rest
Probably trying to build his confidence in an England shirt after what happened in the aftermath of the Euro final.
Lol he had a great season his confidence is fine
Form can vary between club and international teams, even for top players. On top of that, there's way more pressure in an England shirt, especially considering the abuse he got. I wouldn't blame him for feeling anxious about the reception he might get when he plays for England, but I do hope you're right.
Serbia will shock people at the WC, I’m feeling a third placed finish for them.
I legit want Serbia to do well, but they're known bottlers I'm afraid, they'll get in their heads and lose to Switzerland again
Their performances in recent tournaments have been shocking + the Serbs will see red against 🇨🇭 and lose concentration you’re right.
They’ll lose to Switzerland in the groups or to Portugal or Uruguay in the last 16. Even if they somehow make the quarters they would have Germany or Spain I don’t see it
I’ve just seen their squad, and I agree a SF place would be crazy. RO16 exit it is.
In their group, or…?
They’re overdue a decent WC performance.

As someone else said, if they do get through over Switzerland they’re almost certainly playing either Uruguay or Portugal, and then likely Spain or Germany. That’s a really tough side of the draw
Costa Rica made a WC QF, so can Serbia. QF is a realistic target. Third place? Dreamland.
England have been overdue a win for ages now, didn't really help them in any way did it?
England reached the SF last time, that for them is good.
And Serbia making it to the quarters would be very good for them - don't see how they'd make it past that, though.
Listen right…
Not throwing shade, just figuring that's probably the best illustration for a silly argument!
Yeah I know I was only being tongue-in-cheek with my outrage lol
I can't believe the club finally got player who can retain the ball against a press, regain possession and carry it up the pitch. Most obvious hole in our team from a tactical perspective now filled. So happy.
Who are you talking about here?
Bissouma.

No it doesn’t, it has the BBC saying a fee is agreed. That’s a long way from done. They say it’s subject to personal terms being agreed with the player. That’s a very big step in a transfer
It's a big step depending on the transfer. It's not a big step in this transfer.
Like how Mbappe agreeing terms wasn’t a big step because he’s a boyhood Madrid fan who spent a year openly making eyes at them while they courted him?
What? That's an entirely different case? The personal terms were the only thing that needed to be agreed as he would've left on a free. This is a complete non issue in this case, 99% of the time.
Plenty of transfers fall apart when it comes to the contract, it is not a non-issue 99% of the time
Bissouma’s friend just posted a pic of him in the spurs shirt so basically tier 0
Liverpool themselves posted pictures of Fekir in a Liverpool shirt… I’m not saying it won’t happen, but people are way too quick to decide that a deal is done
Can tell some of these never lived through the John Obi Mikel fiasco.
I put a curse on him now he will be very injury prone, come back to me when the season ends and maybe I'll consider lifting the curse for a fee
ANULO MUFO
What bothers me about Nunez is that he will obviously succeed. Even if his goal scoring isn't that great next year, the system will carry him. System matters so much these days.

So he *is* scoring goals in your hypothetical then? Originally you said even if it's he not scoring goals he'll be carried.
They always have tbf - it's a team sport after all.
Isn’t this basically “Players perform better in better teams”?
Players in Klopp and Pep teams are more like cogs in a machine than individual football players
No you can have a good team with no direction. Some players thrive in that, others don't.
Martinez felt bad for Poland so he decided to play the worst possible attack he could even think of
Hey man - Hazard has promised that he will become the player he used to be !
You know it's bad when current hazard is the best attacker
so another year without a goal
just remembered when we released carlton cole, spent all summer searching for a new striker only to be turned down by literally every one and then the morning after deadline day we just re signed carlton cole again
Still not as funny as going out in Europa qualifiers to astra giugiu twice in a row
nothing in this sport can ever hurt me again after that episode
Another one of the many funny wrinkles in the Dildo Brothers' seemingly endless search for a striker.
to reward Vincent Janssen for his huge feat of scoring two goals in the mexican league we're rewarding him with a starting spot against Wales
Costa Rica winning vs new zeland to secure last spot in the World Cup 🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷
NZ all over them and cheated out of a goal by a cheating ref.
I'll give you that new zeland has the ball and Costa Rica is playing shitty but that was a clear clear foul.
Clearly not, the ref saw it in real time and said play on. He's out of his depth.
You are biased af homie lol
As are you fella
That was not a red card?
Nope. Fifa corruption at its finest. NZ player gets elbowed in the head, nothing. Wood pushed over in the box, VAR doesn't even look at it. Corrupt.
Just take the L and go to sleep lad
Why would I, it's morning.
No. Studs on the ground. They dont want a minnow nation like NZ in the WC.
oh no is that the last qualifier? two of my favourite countries :-( both so progressive.
Joe Cole ffs. This panel is more turgid than our football
Who are the current favourites for the WC according to this sub? Surely England is no longer one.
