[Tom Crocker] A “new feature” in the Man City programme today, highlighting their attendance figures.
By - stlloydie
Please keep this feature for the derby
You know what? United should put this feature as a special segment in THEIR programme for the derby. That way you ensure it happens.
I second this petty notion
"oh sorry, Gary forgot to put it in this week! The feature will return next week when we play Morpeth Town 2nd 11.
If they're cherry picking the same stats then isn't their all time top attendance higher than man us (from a cursory google)? Not that attendance at 1 match in the 30s really means anything these days.
I think I've read people in Manchester attended games for both clubs at the time, though. If the attendance record really was set in 1934, then United should have a similar record.
Yeah that was common back in the day for most cities. My dad who's in his 70ss,used to go watch Everton and Liverpool every week in the 60s.
My uncle who's an Everton fan even went to wolves away when Liverpool won the league with my Dad and his mates as it was something to do and the pubs shut.
I heard it said that Newcastle fans would go to Sunderland to support to opposition if Newcastle had an away game. Would imagine the same to be true for City/United
Years and years ago before hooliganism became a thing people used to just go to games to see players like Finney or Matthews. Harry Redknapp talks about it in his book. He'd go see Arsenal one week, Spurs the other etc, all with his dad.
It’s good you dont have to take scarves as they run the video with scarves so you feel like there are fans
And kinda dumb selections too, like wow 1934 Manchester City drew big crowds....great.
I find this cringe worthy but probably chose it for the no history crowd
I guess? But it looks awful lol, like despite City being a global club in the modern era, they still can’t beat an attendance record set in the *1930s*.
edit: yes, no capacity restrictions led to packed stadiums in that era, but then why bring it up at all? Just to prove they’re a bigger club than Southampton?
Football crowds were huge in the first half of the 20th Century. The largest crowd ever recorded at a football game was in 1950. Having a record attendance set before the ~60s really isn’t that uncommon. Still, bringing it up in response to poor attendances in the modern day is pretty daft.
Back then, crowd control and safety regulations were nonexistent. People could be packed like sardines.
Exactly, the 1950 WC final had nearly 200,000 people in a stadium that now holds 78k
I mean who can though? Unless City rent out Wembley for a league match and bus in a capacity crowd they aren't beating that number.
Teams like Rangers and Celtic used to get 100k crowds and the FA Cup final has been attended by crowds so big that the crowd extended all the way to the white lines of the pitch.
Our record attendance is 118,000 against Celtic at Ibrox in 1939. Going down the SPFL member clubs by record attendance, you get to 31st place (out of 42) and Forfar Atheltic before you find a club that set its record attendance after the 60s. It really is pointless trotting out stats from before the all-seated era of stadiums.
And they still don’t look great for them.
Southampton are about 97% attendance of their peak attendance for a random game vs City whereas City are at 64% max.
64% with about £10 tickets and begging people to come to games.
Yeah they're not even being criticised for their top attendance, its their average attendance (or their attendance in less glamorous ties) that's being commented on.
Against a ground not nearly as big as theirs lmao
By bashing other team. Are they really that petty
How rattled are they that they're citing attendance from the nineteen thirties back when tickets were next to nothing and you basically packed the terraces to the absolute limit and then some lmao.
Chelsea got just over 100,000 for Dynamo Moscow right after the end of WWII... would be insane for us to be wheeling this out when playing other clubs like it wasn't barely in our grandparents lifetimes.
100000 in Stamford Bridge sounds insane.. blows my mind stuff like this how rammed it must have been
Absolutely no ealf and safety for that back in the day. You actually see stuff a bit like this at times in lower league ground which still have terraces for play offs and big fa cup ties. Not like it was cos there are fairly tough limits on it but back then fucking hell
Game s gone
Dog track meant it was a lot bigger back in the day.
That's why no one, except City fans, ever gives a shit when City win the league
By saying that, some City fans will claim that you're obsessed and clearly care about them.
Thats why they are investing. When the other team title records are reached as they fast forward it they hope they would care and actually become “big”. It’s a sad state of football as a game.
Dumbest thing since video scarves?
Ootl, What video scarves?
Worst part is that their largest home attendance vs Southampton isn’t even close to the max Capacity of the Ethiad. They’re basically advertising that they can’t fill their stadium.
The bar graph comparison vs Southampton is cringe.
I would argue that the first stat counting fans who are probably all dead by now is worse
Especially their record being set almost 100 years ago 😂
100 years ago when you literally sardined people in and the gates opened at half time letting floods of people in for free
Bringing up a record from 1934 💀
wouldn't really see a German club doing that tbh
Took me a minute
Yeah to show you geniuses they have history.
City are so insecure about their attendance it's honestly embarrassing
They're a very insecure club in general. Same when people mentioned their spending in the past and they had to bust out the "well other clubs have a higher record transfer fee than us. "
Or the ‘Grealish cost 60M’ literal quote from Pep, because that’s how finance works … Allison, VvD, Fabinho cost LFC zero by his logic
I mean their objective is PR above all else, that's why they bought the club. So it makes sense they would want to change the narrative about they not having fans.
This is the opposite way to do it. A good way is to bring in more fans lol.
Yeah all they're doing is keeping this in the news cycle, the only slightly good thing is people might be discovering how cheap Man City tickets are.
Yeah it got me thinking if I ever happen to be in England I could go and watch City match because tickets are cheap and easily available. That's some good PR, but then the bloke from their supporters club went on to say they don't want tourists so I guess it's even in the end.
>then the bloke from their supporters club went on to say they don't want tourists so I guess it's even in the end.
What a welcoming person. Guy's so proud of empty seats during a champions league match.
Yeah, next time I'm in Liverpool and City plays at home I'm definitely going, lol
They don’t actually care about the fans in the stadium though. They just want people around the world to think they’re an actual football club and not an attempt to whitewash the image of an abusive nation state.
What I don't understand is with that in mind why isn't City poaching stars from South America, Africa and Asia more, especially Asia, if they want a worldwide fanbase. Their entire squad is European, bar Mahrez and a couple Brazillians
You can't blame the owners for being confused- usually they just torture people until they accept they're wrong and/or 'disappear' them if they don't.
Well being able to buy CL tickets on Groupon clearly means that isn’t working either
TIL Groupon still exists.
Lmao that can't be real.
I was half taking the piss, but I believe they were actually selling tickets to the Leipzig game on Wowcher
Trying to change the narrative about them not having fans just further highlights the fact that they don't have many fans
getting eclipsed by the rest of the Top 6 and then some, as well
I would not be surprised if they start giving money for attending the match
I checked their website and the price for a ticket right next to the pitch is pretty cheap.
Probably because you cant see anything behind the 2-tier advertising screens
IIRC Qatar did that when they hosted the handball world championship.
I’m not sure it’s good PR though, most Corporate PR seems to emphasise reducing plastic rather than bragging about how much of it turns up on match days.
You're wrong in that PR is the main reason they're doing this, football fans wish "sportswashing" was that shallow, but in 20 years we'll see the real effects of how bad it truly is
But as a city fan this is fucking embarrassingly cringey, this whole thing from pep to the fans has been a shambles. On one hand it's "our fans aren't plastic", now we're trying to advertise how many new fans we have. Who even give a fuck
They have taken the memes personally
Insecure about everything not just attendance.
>sportswashing owners, care about their image
i feel bad for their fans tbh. except for the guy on tv
Actual old school city fans are good people, and my dad talks about how good their club was for LGBT stuff back in the day. Quite sad to see them owned by a country where that’s not even legal
Nah I'm enjoying it...
Damn they are insecure
Don't most kids learn this kind of thing by 3rd grade?
If you act bothered by something, people will bully you more. If you act like you're not bothered, the bullies get bored and move on!
Emptyhad jokes have been going on for years, and quite honesty, half the league has some difficulty selling tickets sometime. But Pep provoked this recent media cycle by commenting on it
It's unbelievable that people go their whole lives and never figure this out.
Thanks bald fraud for giving us this drama.
When you’re a club that’s won less european cups than Wes Brown and less trophies overall than Ryan Giggs, you can understand where the insecurity comes from tbf
Stannis Baratheon moment
I've never even heard of Wes Fewer.
I dont get it why not just embrace it and pay it no mind lmao
I don't understand how insecurity like this exists on an organisational level. What are the higher ups thinking.
Tinpot esque LOL
The power of the memes
Oh dear this is pathetic.
The most pathetic part is the highest attendance against each other comparison. Yeah the reason why Southampton only had 31882 fans against yous is because Saint Mary's has a capacity of 32000 fans. Mumble rappers could spit out more logical bars than that bar chart
>You fuckers harassing me
>Fans - can't be containin'em
> Fuck you City
> You own slaves, that's shitty
Should I start a Soundcloud?
Pull up in the gold Bugatti
Slaves in the back, yeah, Im Emirati
Pep, out of my hands he eat (eat)
Im in the stadium, all I can see is empty seats (seats)
We got that net spend on fleek (fleek)
We rapin this league like Benjamin Mendy (Mendy)
My main bitch fly, she decked out in that Fendi (Fendi)
Levy and I got beef like wendy (Wendy)
The extremely tone deaf bar is perfect and just like so many rappers
Next album when?
>We rapin this league like Benjamin Mendy (Mendy)
That line drops in a real song and it's just over lol song of the year. I'm sure Drake is taking notes.
I would chop off one of my bollocks to be on the Drake ghostwriter team
Their club is so desperate, it's absolutely hilarious.
It's really weird, they need to stop giving fuel to this news story. Both Pep and the supporters group could just stop bringing up attendance and it would stop being news, and now they have a feature in their programme?
I wouldn't be surprised if this feature quietly disappears once they play a team that actually has bigger attendances than them
When they playing United 😂😂
>The Streisand effect is a phenomenon that occurs when an attempt to hide, remove, or censor information has the unintended consequence of increasing awareness of that information, often via the Internet.
🎶you're insecure don't know what for🎶
Taking tinpot to a whole new level.
Good to know they’re not wasting the oil money though, it’s clearly being spent on a behind the scenes tinpot research lab as well as on playing and coaching and all that
So, are they gonna show a comparison between them and United at the derby, then?
Hope we show that comparison lmao
Fun fact: The league record for attendance was United vs Arsenal at 83,260 attendant in 1948 at Maine Road while United were playing their home games there due to the damage Old Trafford had received during WWII.
Was the rebuilt old trafford smaller than Maine Road back then or did you guys just sardine people in more? Because otherwise I'd expect everyone to have stupid large crowds in the olden days.
pretty sure it was just sardine'ing em in. stadiums were basically all standing back in the day so it was just a matter of selling the most tickets and cramming em in.
Cool. Thanks. I wonder why Southampton don't have stupid highs. I know Chelsea does at the ol' bridge.
The Dell was a very interesting design but very small. Stamford Bridge's first life as an athletics track means its stands were much broader and lower, making them not Spion Kops per se but gave them the ability to pack a ton in.
You can see there what I mean, the sort of unbroken sweep of stands meant you just had a sea of people that you didn't get at boxier stadiums. That's a shot from the Dynamo Moscow game that has an unofficial figure of around 100k in attendance, and it looks it.
Wow, a few of them are literally on the pitch there. Mental
Yeah like the record attendance at Old Trafford is wolves v grimsby
Souless. What's next, printing sales targets?
Sweaty "I'm not owned" energy.
As they slowly shrink and turn into a corncob
I needed this laugh today
Fuck me, that's pathetic
My god, I'm absolutely loving this. I hope they keep going on about this. It's hilarious.
Club with bigger stadium has more attendance.
What about the percentage tho, because i could see alot of empty seats on the disallowed goal
Are we living in a simulation? This is beyond pathetic.
They’ve been the dominant force for half a decade and have still won less trophies than Scholes and Giggs. Let em have this one lol
City are just embarrassing themselves at this point, it was just rival fans having a laugh but now they’ve made it even worse for themselves
Honestly you all could just spend 90 minutes singing about the emptihad next time you play. This is hilarious stuff from city.
they've basically told everyone this is what to use as banter lmao
The lady doth protest too much, methinks
Tin pot club.
City fans, I am genuinely curious as to how you all feel about this feature and news story in general?
He'll be here in a minute
He can’t be expected to be in multiple comments threads mate
It's been sooo long.
I don't believe for a second that he hard quit Reddit. Probably just made a new account. But if I'm wrong, damn that's some impressive willpower.
Nah he probably has left. If he thought discussions were shit 6 years ago he'd have an aneurysm now. This place is just for shit posting these days.
You make a fair point.
It's not so much that the quality has gone downhill since then but rather that the volume of shit has shot through the roof.
Is this to prove they have fans or is this something they regularly do? Sorry but yikes, it really looks pathetic
It's a new feature.
Which means they started doing it because people were laughing at them for not having fans. The bloke who writes it will conveniently take a day off when they play someone with a bigger stadium.
> The bloke who writes it will conveniently take a day off when they play someone with a bigger stadium.
the clever play would be to swap it to percentage filled on that day so they can both say 100%.
This is especially easy to do if you limit your comparisons to last year's fixture (after all, it's a more recent and therefore more relevant statistic).
City filled their stadium to 100% of the legal capacity in every single game! And this year, they'll have even more fans than that!\*
Small club mentality
Small club ~~mentality~~
All these years of dominance and there are still pundits on TV with more trophies than their entire club
Small peepee energy
Lmao what an embarrassment of a football club
OUR STADIUM ONLY HOLD’S 32K LMAOOOO
And the dell only held 18’000 wtaf 😂
Let's compare the population of Russia with the population of Switzerland and present it in a bar graph so we can learn absolutely nothing.
This is such a strange comparison.
They will soon post interviews with fans that can't make it, showing how though it is to do.
The tiniest of clubs.
Maybe include a graph showing how many human rights abuses the Southampton owners have committed compared to city’s. That would be a cool regular feature.
This can’t be real
meanwhile villa fans are highlighting their attendance figures with the sound they're making in the stadium
Haha the Division 2 Champions attendance figures just seems so petty.
It must be strange for Pep to work at a club that can't fill their stadium after working at Barcelona and Bayern.
City hierarchy: Yea so strange so strange....here is another £300 million to spend on fullbacks now shut the fuck up lol.
Would have done better to ignore it and move on. Rivals will gleefully pounce on this now
this is hilarious
Small club mindset
So we bought the team, bought all the players, but why aren't people coming to watch us?
It is pretty funny ngl, wonder when they will actually just doing paid attendance
They're a meme at this point
Haha proper tinpot this club, citing pre-war figures.
The most embarrassing club in England
Man City are the football club equivalent of small man syndrome
I honestly thought this couldn't get my embarrassing. I was so wrong.
What's the point in winning all the trophies if you're not *happy*?
Ahahaha. This is the gift that keeps on giving. City Pepping it up against Saints and Pep is so, so happy that the stadium was 2/3 full.
That is hilariously pathetic.
The kings of cringe
Desperate for people’s approval.. will never be a top club
St. Mary's has a capacity of 32k you fucking protoplasmic supine jellies.
is he sure its new because only he said it
Well, one club may have a bigger stadium and thus a bigger record crowd.
Not to mention that this just looks very bad, especially after whatever today was.
Proper Lib Dem bar chart vibes this.
Pep: can we have fans?
Sheikh Mansour: we have fans at home
Fans at home:
The empithad and no fans banter is so overdone, but fuck are they actually insecure
They made emptihad relevant again that's how peak it is
The fact that they're this insecure about it, is why it's still funny.
small dick energy
Why are we doing this shit
A billion dollar football club being insecure and making marketing decisions based on what football fans say on social media... you love to see it.
More fans than Southampton. Well done?
Funny how it is only highest, not averages or percentages ot anything. So most of the time the comparison is just "who has the highest capacity ground? Nyuuurgh."
Even more silly when you include different eras. How did Maine Road fit 80000? I know they stood and were not seated? Was it safe? Were football games back then crazy crowded?
This is very “I’m totally fine” vibes
Oh, Pep please... come back from that soulless club.
Wonder if [these guys](https://www.prolificnorth.co.uk/sites/default/files/styles/lightbox_large/public/images/news/xmanchester-city-fans-influencers-987x987pngpagespeedictyjwdkhrmg.jpg?itok=Zaljcf2-) came up with the idea
