This is going to be a high number

DorothyJMan

Nah, Guardiola will let his mate off. Prepare for 50 minutes of passing around the back.

thin_king980

You were saying….

DerpJungler

Players would want to score goals to gain confidence and momentum

RosaReilly

Stat padding against this Arsenal wouldn't help anyone's confidence. Wouldn't hurt it, though.

CrossXFir3

Goal difference could really make a difference this season. Can't waste the chance.

BruyneKroonEnTroon

Stat padding against Arsenal is praxis. They clearly tried to go to the superleague to prevent having to fight to avoid relegation.

MrCharlesSr

Uhh this aged well

dumbledore_albus69

I do not think football works that way

Maybe he wants his favorite cone placer back and gives them a romping

At least we don’t have to watch Xhaka for at least 2 games. Silver linings.

There should be. Genuinely an accomplishment if you don't manage to win a game the whole season. Mind you the accomplishment is staying alive.

I'm still angry at Newcastle for losing to Derby. In fact of the whole 11 points Derby got, 4 were against Toon

It's painful watching Arsenal even as a neutral. There's an inevitability to everything bad that happens to you.

MegaMugabe21

Imagine being an Arsenal fan then. Three lockdowns have done less damage to my mental health than Mike Arteta

Insaneshaney

You didn't seem to like Unai Emery very much either. How's he doing?

ThePrussianGrippe

I think he won something or other.

getrektbro

Emery has never lost a Europa league final, except as Arsenal's manager.

circa285

I seem to recall a cup of some sort. A pretty big one at that.

MegaMugabe21

The club is rot as a fucking turd make no mistake, but Arteta genuinely just doesn't work for us. He is stubborn about making his desired playstyle work for a team that just doesn't suit it, and he is completely tactically inflexible in this regard. Arteta is just the top of a long list of people I would see imprisoned for crimes against Arsenal.

Kneepi

When you begin rounding them up can you take Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce as well?

MegaMugabe21

For the 5-1 against Tottenham in the 15-16 season mate, we'll take whoever you like.

Quilpo

It's almost like the problem isn't the manager when the exact same shit happens to 3 managers. Might just be a coincidence of course.

yukpurtsun

its not even just mikel, a lot of these players havent performed under multiple managers especially xhaka and hes rewarded an extension and is automatically a starter

Kane_Messi

We’re rooting for a new contract extension. The man just needs a few more years!

frankyfrankwalk

The funny is that even our well wishing sympathy adds to the hurt for supporters

TheKingMonkey

Makes you pine for the days when their fans were holding up Wenger Out signs on iPads when Arsenal had won back to back FA Cups and not failed to qualify for the Champions League in nearly 20 years doesn't it?

Stillslow93

The Wenger out crowd can lick my balls. It should have been kronke out

Jack_Ramsey

Exactly. The Kroenkes are evil. Fuck them and fuck Walmart.

It's honestly hilarious. Their fanbase is the gift that keeps on giving.

and people will think that they actually play better on 2nd half, so the progress is real, let's trust the process

Clubs working together to keep Arteta at Arsenal

-watchman-

Makes sense. If Conte comes in, Arsenal will turn into a real threat.

goodmobileyes

Genuinely hilarious when people point out high possession % and number of shots taken against a dominant team sitting back as a good performance. Especially when they dont even score a consolation goal.

Steupz

Chelsea under Tuchel rarely score more than 2.

Legendarybbc15

This aged well...

[deleted]

The sad part is that was Man City drifting, Arsenal we’re just that bad

sonicqaz

Chelsea definitely kept the pressure up but Arsenal played kind of decent second half on defense. Lukaku should have gotten a goal but for a tremendous save.

If he's the leader, that midfield is never going to improve. He's gotta go, and he can take his marginally better skillset with him.

Nidaime_EroSennin

Roma were lucky the Arsenal board is stupid. Cristante and Veretout have started strong so far. Mourinho doesn't really need Xhaka.

NINETY_LIVES

That was unbelievably dumb, but also not surprising

never_pm_me_ok

Two footed lunge tackle is always a red. But that reaction from the City player is genuinely embarrassing, he barely got touched (if at all) and is rolling around like his leg is broken.

Rude_Coconutman

"Always" yeah unfortunately its not called that always tho and punches in the face aren't even fouls

ThePosterWeDeserve

This game is peak Arsenal

RJTG

Tbh I was impressed about the referee sending him off for this dangerous play, but I don't think there was even a contact at all.

ostermei

It might be impressive if they actually hold to this standard for every team in every game across the rest of the season. But every single person here knows they won't. Some teams will get reds for this on a consistent basis while other teams will be allowed to do things like this (or outright punch their opponents directly in the face) without even a foul being called, nevermind a card given.

calmaplane

Or choke slam them and not even get a yellow. 15 years ago, that would be an amazing takle but its not 15 years ago. Like you said, im happy its changed and its a great spot but its never consistent. Next game, an opposing player will do that to one of ours and nothing will happen. Next game with Atkinson, it will happen again from and opposing player and he'll do that arrogant no finger wag thing he does and not give it. Now *thats* peak arsenal. Just to add, to make sure I'm not misunderstood, the better team won, they deserved it and it was a red card. No issue with any of that. Well........you know what I mean.

HaroldSaxon

I'm 100% on board with this being a red. The problem is other teams can do this, stamp, kick and punch us and they never get given. If you go in like Xhaka does, two footed and at speed its a clear red. You can cause serious injury with it.

eSnowLeopard

OOOH LA LA LA CARTE ROUGE!

FdotM

Nice dive

atx_sjw

That’s what I thought. It was a rash tackle, and I was expecting it to look bad on the replay. Did he even touch Cancelo? Edit: also to add, this isn’t a situation where he *would* have mauled the other player if they didn’t jump out of the way (ex. when Ramos two-footed Messi in 2016 or 2017 and Messi jumped over the challenge, but still got caught a little). Cancelo didn’t even move.

DrJethro

Yeah no sane person is not jumping the fuck away there

schtuff01

Honestly one of Xhaka's cleanest tackles. Cancelo should sign up for the Portuguese diving team

BulldenChoppahYus

It’s funny and everything but slow it down and he doesn’t even touch the man. Pure dive and bull shit if you ask me. But it’s two feet so…

Flyhro

Does he need to touch him for it to be a red? It's dangerous either way, right? And does he really not touch him with the trailing foot? He definitely doesn't with the lead

BulldenChoppahYus

Zero contact that I can see. Looks reckless AF but it’s the massive swan dive from Cancelo that makes the red. He is on his feet for a good half second after Zhaka has got well past and taken the ball. He even has time to literally jump up in the air. It’s a dive. If he just stays on his feet play continues and it’s a throw in to City - no card at all and arsenal lose 5-0 instead of 8-0. A crying shame.

Flyhro

I really think xhakas top foot does make contact. Also agree it looks very divey. Don't think it's a shame anyone gets a red for going in two footed like that. You just plain aren't allowed to do that.

MuntConkey

I might be a homer, but I just don't see a straight red in that challenge.

rumsticks

Probably not but leaving the ground with 2 feet and you’re always asking the question

donut_resuscitate

Sensible take.

fren4u

This is the unfortunate reality of the situation. Don't give the ref a reason.

seanpwns

I think it’s a little harsh. Got all the ball and just a bit of the man. But, a two-footed studs-up tackle can be justified as a red in almost any situation.

HamiltonFAI

Yea it's a bit harsh, but you can't really argue against it

youknowimworking

He lunges with 2 footed tackle. He clips the player a little so the damage is not bad but does he needs to break an ankle to see straight red? Imo it was unnecessary use of force and a wreckless challenge and that's punished with a red

[deleted]

[удалено]

THJappe

The tackle clearly is reckless and using excessive force, prime example of a red card under today’s rules. Under no circumstances should a player be allowed to fly in like that. Just prime Xhaka this…

qwertyuiop15

100%. In most sports there are basic standards you need to adhere to for the safety of everyone. In Rugby you need to know how to tackle properly and safely - if you don’t, you’ll be sent off even if it was unintentional and the opponent wasn’t hurt. In Formula 1, you have to follow the safety rules - if you don’t, you’ll be penalised and possibly even disqualified regardless of whether you affected anyone else. In football, you simply cannot make these challenges any more. It is shocking tackling technique and has no place on the pitch. Asking for broken legs and, worse, bad ligament injuries that can derail a career. The main questions are why Arsenal persist with this player and why this player, who clearly cannot tackle, was playing as a sole no.6 against one of the best attacks in world football.

THJappe

Those questions are certainly valid. It just becomes impossible to defend a player when he time and time again makes the stupidest of decisions.

whiteboards1225

It's 2 footed, they're always reds

Smartranga

Its reckless enough to be a deserved red (given if you go in like that you cant argue with the result), but the rolling around on the ground is likely what seals it

toluwalase

I really don’t know if that’s a red tbh. Kompany did it against Mo Salah and only got a yellow and I remember defending it

ViolentPlatypus55

Should be a yellow card for simulation

gab_brunotte

You know shit's gone down when even tottenham pity arsenal

MuricanDeathTriangle

We hate Arsenal because we’re Spurs. We hate City because we’re human.

Mannerhymen

Can the referee give both a yellow for simulation and a red for the dangerous play?

tomato_soup_

I don’t see why not. xhaka gets sent off for being a dumbass flying in like that and cancelo gets a yellow for acting a fucking clown

Superjunker1000

Game’s …… I mean, Xhaka’s gone !

pompsofsoap

Could have been a a yellow and a warning. Dangerous play going in with both feet and cleats. But he gets the ball and doesn’t touch the player. The dive sold it and Atkinson bought it.

OnOff58

How is that a red? From the TV camera angle it sort of looks 2 footed but the replays show he clearly moves one foot away. What’s the point in VAR?

antbaby_machetesquad

Doesn't matter anymore, it's not about getting the ball it's about it being a dangerous tackle. Jumping in two footed and off the ground it's a straight red all day because if you miss you've a good chance of crippling the other guy. Has been a red for years and every player knows it.

MrTinybrain

Back in the day that would be a beautiful tackle, now its “by the books its a dangerous tackle”. No contact, no injury “trying to protect players” “could have broken his legs” fact is no contact was made. You know what could have been deadly and career ending? When Mustafi was kicked in the face. That wasnt even carded. Give this red fine, the rules are pathetic and pussy, inconsistent. Arsenal was bad, bad tackle when you know the rules. The rules are just fuckin dumb.

Gerards_died_of_flu

Fucking moron

Gerards_died_of_flu

Minimal contact but what are you doing flying in like that

oj_with_toothpaste

Its not really even about the contact - its just the type of tackle they want to heavily discourage and for good reason. A tackle like that has the potential to be dangerous. No need for it.

Caranthiir

Could have been yellow.

MajorTomintheTinCan

Atkinson was pulling a yellow at first lol

Joseph9000

Red!? His leg is bent, studs aren’t showing, sure leaves the ground but his body /momentum is to the side of the player not through the player. With VAR should be a yellow with any reading of the rules that actually takes into consideration what dangerous play means. I get why it was given on first view but seems really harsh that it was allowed to stay a red.

chuckusadart

Canceling flailing around like a right fanny, fucking hell. He had the yellow out until he saw the theatrics

mapepo

For me it looked like he didn't know which pocket the red was in because he half removed the yellow and looked at it then immediately reached for the other pocket

domalino

I think he got told by the assistant it was a 2 footed tackle with both feet off the ground and thats always a red card. Its not about the contact you make, you cant tackle 2 footed.

Bojono31

Such a braindead challenge, you must know at that level what are the consequences when you make a slide like that.

km255

Honestly don't think that's a red, not that it'd have an effect on result.

mtojay

Agree. But it looks soooo awful to go in like that with both feet leading like that. Its just stupidity to go in like that

fishyDONK

So just ask yourself this; What would happend if torres planted his foot infront of xhakas tackle? That's the reason why they don't allow this kind of tackles.

KroosKontroller

Xhaka wants Arteta sacked bad

whit3tig3r

Looked like cancelo was playacting. Don't think Xhaka caught him much if at all, but the way he jumped in was pretty reckless

COW321

Atkinson mate.

chuckusadart

Dangerous tackle, But that show by cancelo is also a fucking disgrace

goonSquad15

If players are seriously that hurt then get off the pitch while the physios look at them for 5 minutes

Winzip115

I always shout at the television "straight to the hospital!". If you are that hurt you need to be in a hospital. This shit just keeps getting worse and it's sucking all the joy out of the game.

Ryan8Ross

SERIOUS FOUL PLAY A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play. Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play. So tl;dr: **if you aren’t in control and use excessive force it’s a red** , regardless of whether there’s contact It’s like the commentator said, he could just dipped a toe in, why is he flying in with studs up when he doesn’t need to

OneObi

Apparently you can't tackle with both feet off the ground. Doesn't matter if you connect something or not.

Parish87

What a fucking plantpot
