PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

Glens Falls won't know what hit it

CNYMetroStar

Utica would literally burn down

puyol500

Lmfao Utica on Reddit I’ve seen it all (cherry valley checking in)

luminous_moonlight

God that would be awesome. Leicester in the Hudson Valley, make it happen!

llb8

I never thought I’d see my local team show up on this sub, I can’t wait to see Jamie vardy strolling through town with a genny in one hand and a garbage plate in the other. Great news for the city of Rochester.

CNYMetroStar

Genny Cream Ale as well

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

Jamie Vardy washing down a night of chatting shit and getting banged by scarfing a garbage plate is not something I knew I needed in my life.

TiberiusCornelius

Had to look this up [and literally what the hell](https://www.thespruceeats.com/thmb/x8HVqnQTC0BkvlLaYyAXdmKCNOg=/3456x2592/smart/filters:no_upscale(\)/garbage-plate-b154b8ed2edb48fc895d425d0fad729f.jpg)

turbo4400

I live in Rochester, these are some of the best drunk food you can possibly get. Heart attack inducing? Maybe. But delicious nonetheless.

_stand_your_ground_

What is it out of interest?

turbo4400

The "standard" version is 2 cheeseburger patties with home fries, mac salad and meat sauce. Most people add some form of onions ketchup and mustard as well. Most places have lots of options for meat and sides though.

CNYMetroStar

Gotta get the burger and hot dog mix

turbo4400

I don't mind it, but I usually get the traditional one. My only twist is sauerkraut.

imelik

Yes please, sauerkraut sounds amazing with all that.

handonbroward

Dogtown on Monroe...triple threat...two burgers and a dog. Still my go-to when I am home. Penfield Hots is also the best "original" Hots still in existence that hasn't changed owners at some point.

viscavis

Reading about Dogtown on r/soccer is wild as fuck lol. On the topic, the Rhinos mean a lot to me. I grew up going to matches during the team’s prime and have wo manu great memories. I still have the ticket stub from the Open Cup match. It would be amazing to see the team return. Thanks, Vardy.

Saltine_Warrior

Lol same. Love Dogtown.

viscavis

Gonna grab a plate there tomorrow at lunch in honor of Jaime. The owners are cool people too.

handonbroward

Yea I had multiple people text me about this thread lol. The Rhinos were our blood when we were young. Played club soccer for so long. MLS was so obscure that A-League was essentially the same level to us. Steenkamp, Miller, Demmin, Vallow, Onstad, Allnut...those guys were my soccer heroes before I had any exposure to the game globally.

CNYMetroStar

Dogtown is where it’s at!

G0rsk

Penfield Hots is unbeaten, also shocked to see it pop up on this subreddit 😂

Panzer517

It's called a garbage plate. It's best enjoyed after 1am while drunk or hungover.

_stand_your_ground_

I'm vegan but there was a time I would have destroyed that thing after a few pints.

Panzer517

If you ever decide to change your mind, break your meat and carb fast with one.

kit_mitts

There are also vegan garbage plates

braveheart18

You don't even have to be drunk to love a good garbage plate.

skeevy-stevie

Facts.

Nastronaut18

Hello fellow Rochesterian! Very important, what is the best plate in the city?

turbo4400

Dogtown for me, but I'm sure i haven't had the majority of the plates out there so I'm certainly no expert.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

Henrietta Hots is supposed to be good too, right? Not sure when I’ll be able to get back, but I have to get this over with and finally get one.

turbo4400

I've heard that, also with Perinton hots. So many to try but I can only handle so many plates in a year haha.

handonbroward

Penfield Hots is up there. Same owners as when they opened, same suppliers. Food hasn't changed and even some of the same employees lol. Dogtown is still my favorite though.

awrf

Henrietta is hit or miss, it mainly gets talked about because it's the closest to RIT so all the RIT kids go there first

Nastronaut18

Hard same on Dogtown.

SomeOtherGuysJunk

delicious

FalcoLX

Don't knock it till you've tried it.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

What the hell indeed. Actually, my terrible confession is that, although I grew up in Rochester I've never actually had a garbage plate, mostly because my dad dismissed it as the kind of crap that the U of R kids ate after getting loaded. So it's perfect for Vardy.

jvpewster

Never been to Rochester, but looking at it, I highly doubt your dad is wrong, neither in the sense that is shit, or that it’s probably delicious if you’re 20 year old state college student hammered

fivewaysforward

I've been to Rochester once for a Red Wings' game. They had garbage cans at the stadium which I appreciated hahah

alexgndl

As a former U of R kid...your dad's not wrong. Doesn't mean that you shouldn't try them though, garbage plates are awesome.

mrfocus22

What in tarnation is that

machu46

That, my friend, is a Rochester delicacy.

laker88

ngl I want to try this

Starwarsfan73

It’s very very good. But it’s like 3000 calories, so you really shouldn’t eat it all at once

UmbroShinPad

What about if I've just ran a marathon?

dicifly69

So easy to make and so delicious.

laker88

Is it easy though? Just looking at a random recipe I saw it required macaroni salad, fries, grilled hot dogs and meat sauce

dicifly69

Oh yeah, throw some Mac salad on one half, the fries on the other side, cheeseburger or hot dog on top, cover in meat sauce. Done. Add onions or condiments of your choosing

laker88

Oh okay, I would need to make mac salad and meat sauce from scratch though, I can't get them pre-made. Though a store-bought jar of ragù might just work... And do you use frozen fries or do you just get them from some fast food place? What condiments do you suggest?

dicifly69

Ahh making from scratch would take some more effort. As far as the sauce goes I’d look up a meat hot sauce recipe rather than something like ragu . And yes frozen fries (specifically home fries) will work, I’ve also seen curly fries and tater tots used as well. Not sure how readily available those would be to you. I always use onions, and ketchup and mustard as condiments

laker88

Thanks for the suggestions! Even though it's a bit of effort making it from scratch, I'm going to give it a try. Also wonder how popular this dish would be at fast food places in Europe...

dicifly69

I’ve noticed people outside of western NY don’t really like/understand the concept of a garbage plate so I’m not sure how popular it would be in Europe!

foxy1167

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/208884/garbage-plate-sauce/ This is a good meat sauce recipe if you have a blender or food processor, my GF went to college in Rochester and swears by this recipe.

_hack0slash_alpha

It's basically the Daytona Beach version of an English or Irish breakfast, so it's got potential

skeevy-stevie

Not pasta meat sauce. It’s like a spicy / chili meat sauce. Usually made for hot dogs. It’s really easy to make. I usually just make Mac salad, but you can buy it at the store. Then use frozen fries or home fries, burgers / hot dogs and the meat sauce. Extra onion on top.

laker88

Thanks. I'll have to make my own salad as well. And the onion that goes on top is raw, right? Not crispy fried onions?

skeevy-stevie

That’s what I do, raw white onion.

DrAuer

The breakfast version is the best hangover food ever created

woostar64

That’s looks vile

TerribleHelicopter44

knowing vardy the garbage plate was what convinced him

shadowthunder

~~How dare you.~~ [I misread this; carry on] Garbage plates are goddamned delicious.

This looks like the type of thing I make in my kitchen when I'm high.

WhatsVersace

America is a sick nation

Napalm3nema

I’m a Yank, and I had no clue. Now I need to ask my Rochester Technical alum buddy what the hell it really is.

MrF33n3y

Don’t forget the Genny Cream also - Vardy doesn’t know what he’s signed up for here.

xsouprcrackersx

One of the legends of the league coming to my fucking hometown with the team I grew up with, the most storied semi-professional team, thats in trouble, plus the garbage plate, Genesee brewery, the highest amount of cocktail bars per capita in the country its a match made in heaven. Plus our friends rochester motto that should be the official Rochester motto, 'ain't nobody impressin anybody' letssss goooo

TheLoosestGoose

This comment made my day. Having drunkenly eaten one or two of these myself, it's the perfect visual

cheersdom

must have been a helluva poker game

braveheart18

This is crazy! For those who don't know the Rhinos are the only non MLS team to win the Open cup (basically the US soccer version of the FA cup). The team has been in dire straights the last couple years, culminating with them moving out of their stadium, going through a rebrand, and (apparently) bringing in some investors to try and revitalize the team. Abby Wambach grew up there, as did actors Winston Duke, Kristin Wiig, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. That must have been one hell of a sales pitch.

dicifly69

Let’s hope they move to anywhere better than the shithole they decided to put the stadium in originally

braveheart18

I dont think they'll ever go back to the old stadium at this point. I bet they're planning a new one on the east side of town. Although Frontier Field has classic view with the kodak building being in the background, so I wish they could find a way to make it work there.

dicifly69

Wouldn’t mind a return to frontier field either like the good old days, and if I remember correctly they had ideas of building the stadium in Gates before they put it downtown.

SkiingOnFIRE

Yeah that would be awesome. I miss going to their games at Frontier as a little kid with my brother, dad and grandpa. PATECH/Sahlens/Marina Auto was never the same

CNYMetroStar

Still remember that awful pitch the WNY Flash had to play on at frontier field. No more soccer at baseball stadiums for me.

braveheart18

Yeah its definitely not ideal I just have some great memories of watching the rhinos at frontier. The womens NT came too after the 99 world cup.

ills1ck

Why did they move out of frontier field?

braveheart18

Frontier Field is a baseball stadium, they moved to a soccer specific stadium in the early 2000s.

ills1ck

I remember frontier stadium being amazing and always crowded when watching the rhinos.

Danzard

Only thing I know about Rochester is that Brodie Lee was from there.

CristiaNoConsento

home to the garbage plate

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

It's also the home of Kodak and Xerox* but ever since those companies went down the toilet it's mostly been known for garbage plates. *Technically their HQ is in Connecticut, but most of their workforce was based in Rochester

awrf

And Wegmans, the best supermarket chain in America (yeah I said it fite me)

jtwhat87

Can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see Wegmans love in r/soccer

Any-Celebration-8065

God I love weggies

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

No argument here. My first job was as a cart boy at Wegmans!

shadowthunder

You ain’t wrong.

Nightmare_Pasta

I actually agree. I prefer my Wegmans than any other grocery store.

yer_da_

What makes it so good?

awrf

Imagine an upscale supermarket with great in-store dining options and wide selections of all the grocery items you'd possibly be looking for, but at everyman prices. On top of that, they compensate and treat their employees very well. They've appeared on Fortune's annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list every year since the list first appeared in 1998 and are frequently top-5 - they were number 3 this past year. That's all companies, in all industries. So you also get to feel good about shopping there. Their only competition for "the best" is Publix. They are also an extremely good market and you'll find occasional Wegmans vs Publix arguments crop up (though their regional footprints don't overlap, except barely in Virginia/North Carolina).

W00DERS0N

Neither one is Stew Leonard's.

MrF33n3y

You mean best supermarket chain in the world.

cnhn

bausch and lomb was born there and was headquartered for a very long time.

swampy13

Taye Diggs grew up there.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

And come to think of it, Winston Duke (M'Baku in Black Panther) went to Brighton High School too, so we've even got a connection to one of the better MCU movies

JJDrizzzle

Rip Brodie lee great to see another wrestling fan on here

tokengaymusiccritic

There's a pretty good college there, Rochester Institute of Technology

sw1611

God, i miss him so much

Danzard

I know man so do I, He was such a great wrestler and an even better person.

somersettler

Well that's more than me, all I knew about Rochester was that it's in Kent, and apparently this isn't even that Rochester so I'm back to zero

00Laser

I once made out with a chick from Rochester and as a European was surprised to hear that despite being in New York it's a 6h drive from Rochester to New York.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

New York State is close to the size of England, and New York City itself is down in the southeast corner of the state geographically. Actually comparing it to England works on multiple levels since the relationship between northern and southern England is similar to the relationship between New York City and Upstate New York.

MaraudngBChestedRojo

CEO of Jeffries (medium sized US investment bank) went to undergrad at U of Rochester

Insert_Kebab

The Raging Rhinos to you grey hairs.

handonbroward

I do remember the golden days of A-League soccer in the Roc. US Open Cup at Frontier Field baby. I think I actually was on the field for the players running out for a couple of matches.

00Laser

Why are they not called Rochester Raging Rhinos anymore? I liked the triple alliteration.

RockShrimp

Honestly Jamie Vardy + Bills fans seems like a match made in heaven.

RockShrimp

Tell me you can't see him doing a table smash.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

Athletic piece going into more detail on it: https://theathletic.com/2648727/2021/06/15/ive-never-done-anything-the-normal-way-jamie-vardy-becomes-co-owner-of-us-team-rochester-rhinos/?source=twitterhq

HOU-1836

Very very good article (as always from The Athletic). Has tons of quotes from the Dworkins and Vardy as well as explaining how Vardy has taken over the academy development.

17user_name

Rochester has a long soccer history. Abby Wambach is from here. Brian Bliss who played for the USMNT in the late 80s. The Rochester Lancers in the 70s. Who played in the old NASL. I can remember lots of hype when Pele came to play here With the NY Cosmos. A lot of players from those teams stayed in the area when they were done playing. Helped create a great soccer culture in the area. Awesome to have Vardy come try to build on that. Also if we are just talking famous. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Kristen Wiig are both from Rochester.

skywardsword596

To add to this, the Rhinos themselves are still the only non MLS team to win the US Open Cup (1999) and one of only 2 to reach the final (Charleston Battery 2008) since MLS began play in 1996.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

Cruyff played in Rochester once too, right? I was amazed to see it pop up on a list of all the places he scored a goal in.

17user_name

I think so. I remember hearing stories from my parents and siblings. I was born in the 70s so don’t remember much. They talked about the stars and players that came through. I played for and with the kids of a bunch of the guys that played on those teams. Heard a lot from them too. Great stories.

bonsai1214

Section V soccer is the most competitive region in the state.

germanyid

Wow crazy to here my home region being discussed on this sub. My high school played in Section 5. Made it to the state semi finals senior year

RefereeMason

Where’d you play? McQuaid alum here.

bonsai1214

I was at Penfield

billsboro12

McQuaid alum here as well. Played soccer there. What a surreal day this is, it’s awesome.

Avocado_breath

I hate to mention it, but the Glazer family is from Rochester.

17user_name

Unfortunately. Lol. I wasn’t going to mention it. Didn’t want the down votes from ManU fans. I live with 3, I hear it enough

germanyid

One of the Glazers was on my high school soccer team. He sucked 😂

PhantomRenegade

Pulisic's dad lives there now I think. Saw Christian showed up to a Rhinos practice randomly a few years back

hookyboysb

His dad was an assistant for the Rhinos in 2017.

RefereeMason

Yup, I was a fourth official many a times for those games

PhantomRenegade

I was at the red bulls ii game

sergei791

News like this is what really pings me with sadness and makes me wish there was promotion/relegation in American soccer. As someone who lives nearby, the possibility that Vardy could join your team as an owner and then, through management/attracting better players, guide your team to the top flight (MLS) would be a sporting story that simply could not be topped for me. Alas

Nightmare_Pasta

Not possible since MLS has gained a stranglehold on USSF and how soccer should be conducted in America. Now even development has to go through them.

sergei791

If you're talking about training solidarity payments that are paid to clubs that developed a player in their youth, my understanding was that of the three major stakeholders \[USSF, MLS, and MLSPU (players' union)\], only the MLSPU is vehemently against the system. * Whereas the USSF used to be against solidarity payments, they have switched to a neutral stance, where they will allow development clubs to collect these payments, but not force clubs to pay these solidarity payments, for fear of an anti-trust lawsuit from the MLSPU. * The MLS is ostensibly willing to negotiate an agreement for development club compensation * The main objection comes from the MLSPU, who claim the costs associated with providing solidarity payments negatively affect a player's right-to-work, as in their view player transfers are a zero-sum game - the funds for a solidarity payment either come out of the player's wages or the transfer doesn't go through at all. Good reads: * [https://socceresq.com/2018/07/07/what-exactly-is-preventing-us-soccer-and-mls-from-participating-in-the-fifa-solidarity-training-compensation-system/](https://socceresq.com/2018/07/07/what-exactly-is-preventing-us-soccer-and-mls-from-participating-in-the-fifa-solidarity-training-compensation-system/) * [https://www.espn.com/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/4146199/why-are-mls-clubs-getting-paid-for-us-talent-going-to-europe-but-not-the-youth-teams-that-played-a-part-in-their-development](https://www.espn.com/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/4146199/why-are-mls-clubs-getting-paid-for-us-talent-going-to-europe-but-not-the-youth-teams-that-played-a-part-in-their-development)

NaranjaEclipse

It would need to be done right to avoid teams from going financially bust and to avoid the owners throwing a fit when their ‘investment’ gets relegated.

mining4aheartofgold

I don't really see why it would be such a problem. Granted it wouldn't be a true pyramid, but surely they could introduce at least a second tier, but just guarantee the money was divvied up equally regardless of which tier you competed in?

NaranjaEclipse

I think the idea might be to grow MLS to the point of 2 20 team leagues with pro/rel between the two. I’d think that’s a compromise that’s acceptable but I’d love for it to be open on the bottom end too with USL/such being the lower end of the pyramid

00Laser

I mean they already have playoffs so I don't know why a second tier would be such a hard sell since that means there's already some kind of division between the good and bad teams. Maybe give the 2nd league champion a spot in the playoffs too or something to make it more attractive.

sergei791

What would "done right" look like if not the conventional *n* teams down, *n* teams up? One model that is used in some leagues is using a points average over several seasons to choose which teams get relegated. That protects teams from an uncharacteristic/freak season that sends them down, Lille and Monaco's recent flirtations with the relegation zone in Ligue 1 come to mind - look at where they are now. But what if someone's "investment" does consistently poorly over three seasons? If someone is not running their club well - by hiring competent staff at all levels of the club, reinvesting revenues within a sustainable transfer policy, developing youth, etc. - then in effect they are asking the clubs in the second tier to finance their place at the bottom of the top flight. Why should clubs consistently performing well at the top of the leagues below them be forced to finance an owner's poor business model? Even if a club is well run but has inherently lower income streams due to being in a smaller (or less soccer-attuned) market, the club needs to be demoted or go out of business. Every additional season the poorly-run club stays in the top flight is a season a club finishing at the top of the second tier finances the former's revenue by way of forgone television revenue, reputation, and the like.

macababy

If you can't picture this you're just going to have to grab a flight to Rochester to see it, because it's majestic: Picture Jamie Vardy walking down the street with a Genny Cream Ale and a garbage plate, with 5 U of R freshmen who don't know who the fuck he is but think his accent is hilarious. Because that's going to be every Thursday night.

FFmattFF

Lets ride

dicifly69

Scenes when I run into vardy grabbing a plate and a Genny. Rhinos are back!!

doctorslimpickle

That is random but very awesome

zachszcz28

Being in Rochester this is big news

MrF33n3y

Really excited to see theRhinos getting revived, bring it on. Genny Creams and garbage plates all around!

hendrixnash

How bizarre

maliburum53

A great way to get people excited would be to somehow get Abby wambach involved, she’s the epitome of local hero

imelik

You never know, now with Vardy being part of the team they just might get her involved as well. I am sure they have at least thought about it

hookyboysb

Wambach would actually make sense. This is completely out of left field...

imelik

Well. Looking at the story of Vardy it does make sense. It definitely sounds like something that would interest him and he would be exited about, and with his name being known around the world...

smokey815

The team has been not playing for 4 years at this point, they've been building to an announcement on the socials this week. This is way bigger than what I expected. It's so cool.

Nastronaut18

First the Flower City Union launch and now some great Rhinos news. Pro soccer is back in Rochester baby!

holhaspower

Had no idea there was another Rochester in the USA, thought this was some new local rival to my club for a minute. Is Rochester it’s own city like in the UK or is it like a city district?

Avocado_breath

It's a standalone city on the shores of majestic Lake Ontario in western New York State, about 70 miles east of Buffalo and 250 miles northwest of New York City.

holhaspower

250 miles?! I could get to 5 different countries if I traveled that kind of distance that’s so mad. I forget how massive the USA is still. Had a look at the history and it’s not actually named after our Rochester like a lot of US cities are, it’s named after a bloke called Nathaniel Rochester.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

> I forget how massive the USA is still Yeah, New York State by itself is almost the size of England*. *Specifically England - I am one of the comparatively few Yanks who seems to understand the difference between England and the United Kingdom. ;)

kit_mitts

And like someone else (might have been you lol) mentioned in this thread, the dynamic between the Upstate/Western NY cities like Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse and the Downstate/NYC region is pretty similar to the dynamic between London/southern England vs the northern cities like Manchester/Liverpool/Newcastle.

PM_Me_ULURP_Apps

Ha, that was indeed me. Just like you can apparently find lots of Scousers/Mancs in London because of the greater amount of economic opportunity, so too you find many of us native Upstaters* living in NYC for the same reason. *Or native WNYer/CNYer/etc if you really want to get into it

kit_mitts

Nothing better than finding native WNYers out in the wild! I need to put that Rhinos flair back on my profile.

xsouprcrackersx

Greater Rochester New York is huge, has some large suburbs around it. The Rhinos have so great history as well, being the only non-professional team to win the US open cup. Also a reputation for being the best semi-professional sports city in the US.

cantevenmakeafist

If I recall correctly, Medway's Rochester once lost its city status because the council forgot to submit the paperwork.

TheHypnoChode

Completely out of left field, but I'm for it.

kdbernie

Great to see my home town getting some positive soccer news in. I’ve long since left Rochester, but I’ll always remember going to a rhinos game and the Rhinos pulling out a W. I was probably 8 or 9 at the time. Why do I remember it so vividly? Well when the Rhinos won a ticket would get you a free taco from Taco Bell, so my brother and I stood outside of the stadium with our cousin collecting unwanted tickets. We got 30 free tacos that night. It was magical.

noahrgoudy

This sub is not where I ever expected to see my home town mentioned lmao

bentonboy

Cant wait to go to lux with vardy and then get a garbage plater afterwards

GOR098

Why are they called rhinos? Were there used to be any rhinos in that area?

handonbroward

Because people from Rochester ain't that smart, but we tough as fuck and don't move for nobody! All above is true, but I have no idea how they came up with the name for the club originally.

cnhn

It's april fool's isn't it? I am dreaming, aren't I? Let this be true!!!

herooftime7

vardy needs to bring fofana

FrozenHazard

Interesting, I wonder if this has anything to do with the movie that was put on hold about him. Either way, very cool.

maliburum53

Yesssss

herooftime7

hopefully vardy buys rooney’s kids

xsouprcrackersx

Wow what a change of scenery. They disbanded for a short period recently and I thought they were done. I remember my grandpa having season tickets in the late 90s and going to games then. About 12 years ago we got season tickets by trading in some of our old college textbooks. This should be just the injection of confidence they needed. Can't wait to be back!

wowohwowza

Shame that he wouldn't co-own my local, Stocksbridge Park Steels, where he played before going pro. They'd jump at the opportunity I'm sure, would rather see that than some American team with little connection

FFmattFF

No shame at all, Rhinos or die

Luol-Dengue

Vardy's about to get swindled a bunch of money

bubbabear244

Ro-cha-cha!
