I sifted through dirt from the Arkansas diamond mine. I found this little guy that glimmered more than the other quartz I found. Is there a chance this is a diamond? I took pictures of when it was under the microscope if that helps.

The crystal habit appears to be isometric (octahedral faces) in the micro pictures (#3 and #4). This indicates diamond (C) rather than quartz (SiO2).

That’s what I was thinking, but I wasn’t sure. I’ll take it to a professional sometime soon so I can get confirmation. Thanks!

I second batubatu. This does appear to be a diamond. Great find!

Papercurse

Scratch it against a quartz and see if it's harder

Incredible. I've always wanted to go there. Did you go to a pretty isolated spot or was it pretty close to other people? I had a hunch you had to trek pretty far to have a chance to find a diamond there.

EmLiminator

People were spread pretty far apart, except at the wash stations. It’s 911 acres of land, so you can walk anywhere around the park and you will barely walk into people. And yes the distance for me was far, but not undoable. I live in Austin TX, so it was only about 6 hours. If you choose to go bring buckets so you can bring some dirt home. I kept waiting for my “Disney moment” where I’d get frustrated and stand up to leave and go to a new area and there it would be, a big diamond on the surface. It never happened, but for some it might.

BoredPoopless

Great advice. I'll have to give it a shot. Congrats on your find.

Graycy

Is it allowed carry dirt out, or maybe who'd quibble over a bucket?

EmLiminator

Yes you can carry dirt out as long as it is sifted through first. People are allowed 5 gallons per person when leaving the park. :)

Graycy

Thanks! We've been meaning to go, about 3 hours away.

UPDATE as of 1/17/2021: I went to a jeweler to have it tested and nothing showed up. They said it’s probably because it’s so small. They said “it very well could be a diamond,” but we don’t know because of its size. The mystery continues!

siciliansmile

Herkheimer?

EmLiminator

I don’t think it is...only because they say Herkimer diamonds are only found in Herkimer county in upstate New York.

SpeakerfortheRad

Until I, an evil villain unbeknownst to the world, purchased tens of thousands of Herkimer diamonds and dumped them in the diamond crater in Arkansas!

EmLiminator

Ppphhhtt haha! Nice

Izzoh

This would legitimately be hilarious, but something I'd probably only put in a friend's bucket or something

*Gasp* Such Villainy!!
