Between the homelessness crisis to the blatant money mismanagement to the REAL fiasco to raising the debt ceiling to build a hockey rink, I've about had it with the direction that the mayor and city council are taking this city. I really want to love my home town but it just keeps getting worse. I'm tired of not saying anything about it. Anybody else out there on the same wavelength as me?

My inference is they keep zoning more sprawling neighborhood developments before the previous are finished which means more expensive infrastructure to service. Look at the size of the roads for a 250k population city. It's ridiculous with a garbage public transit route design.
And a lot of those neighbourhoods’ developers haven’t even transferred responsibility for road, sidewalk, lights, parks, etc to the City yet. Wait until taxpayer have to start paying to maintain these neighbourhoods. 💰 💰 💰
[удалено]
But then how will city officials continue to get bribery and kickbacks from developers?
Ask maintenence why the cooperaters new state of the art sports plex has cold showers, shower heads that don't work, inadequate storage, things going unrepaired... and they will share that they have been operating with zero maintenence budget. But... don't worry REAL knows what's important.
This is a chronic issue in Saskatchewan, and it affects almost every building (except the Legislature). They neglect everything and let it rot to the point of being irreparable, then throw their hands up in despair, announcing that they have to replace the whole thing. Preferably while taking out as many heritage buildings along the way as they can. It's a disease.
I play adult safe in the winter and usually our games are later in the day and 8/10 times there isn’t hot water to have a shower meanwhile the team fees for 30 games is 8600$ and rising
As a plumber, I realized a couple months ago that I've been driving over some of the same pot holes for *years*. There's two on ring road that I've been seeing for well over a year. The state of our roads is unacceptable. Heaves, holes, and the lack of painted lines!! Sometimes it's a few minutes until I realize *I'm driving in the middle of 2 lanes* because *there's no bloody lines*. Also, there is *far* too little discussion about the absurd amount of boarded up houses, scorched houses, and dilapidated, easily-condemnable houses. They're eyesores, not only from the slumlords that don't take care of them, but also some of the clientele that they allow. I don't like the idea of gentrification pushing out people who are less-fortunate, but at the same time....we almost need gentrification at this point. Me & the other admins of The Reginian are planning on doing a video where we drive around and try to take a tally of everything mentioned above in this comment.
Let us know when that video is posted!
I created a google map of the house/garage fires in the city in the last 18 months - there have been around 30 in the entire city outside of core and north central. There have been more than 60 just in north central. It's insane.
Could you share a link to it?
For sure, it's by the block number though, not physical address as the address isn't usually part of the bulletin - so you'll see a line of fires down the block as I used the next multiple of 10 to show a fire event on that block. I'll edit this post with it when I'm home
https://goo.gl/maps/4QgVvEaYVoXCtFoy7
Fill the holes on the road fill the (lot) holes on the vacant boarded up homes on all those city blocks but no they chose to fill their pockets and their friends pockets instead.
Hey. We have beautiful bike paths that virtually no one uses. Why keep fixing roads that keep getting potholes when we can just make bike paths that no one ever complains about because they get very little use
hard to use them when they don't take me to my destination
And then the rest of the way to your destination is putting your own life at risk because, for some reason, cyclists are considered Enemy #1 on the streets of Regina.
> for some reason Because everyone in a car is mad about the potholes.
trying to not hit the pot holes on a bike is next level. i have had my bike chain fall off due to pot holes. no time to look at traffic got keep my eyes peeled for holes.
I mean, everything being equal, there are an inordinate amount of folks who just hate people who want to cycle around town instead of driving. Even if it doesn't personally affect them.
The thing that really bothers me is when I drive through a less expensive residential area of the city and the roads are absolute garbage… then I drive through an area like wascana view or Windsor park and their roads that were in great shape are getting resurfaced. I know they pay higher property tax, but it feels so unfair.
What are you talking about? Windsor park road had a pothole and a sign sticking out of it for well over a year. You can't even drive 50 down that road without nearly flipping your car. In the winter we almost died as a bus slid through a stop sign doing 50 as there was zero clean up 5 days after a snow. This past year we received less winter and summer road maintenance than 5th and Rae.
I’m talking about the Windsor park area. Actually it might be woodland grove. One of those two. Nowhere near Rae st.
You were comparing high income to low income areas... I'm telling you as someone who lives in the areas that you claim are well taken care of, that you are wrong. 5th and Rae, a low income neighborhood, is a smoother drive than some roads out here, including main drags. Is that better?
Some of those houses you are talking about are Sask Housing homes that the Sask Party has allowed to get destroyed and never fixed.
I have some equipment (lavaliers, gimbal) and editing chops if you are open to getting a hand with producing this.
Came here to say the same thing. Happy to help!
I've said it before and ll say it again mayor Masters and her cronies have to go. She lied about every one of her 4 pillars of campaign promises. Installed a dictator as manager paid the old manager almost a million dollars on his way out. Swiflty squashes any opposition views or critisim. This is what it's like to be "administrated..." Regina has barreled towards a dystopian matriarch. This person is a scam artist, a liar, and a bully. She has effectivelymanipulateds every situation, makes me sick, drain the swamp on this dirt bag we have to stop electing people like this!
So it sounds like you're in then?
Why do you think niki Anderson is a dictator? As for Chris Holden, when you terminate someone in the middle of a contract, and who has worked for the city for 40 years, yeah you are going to have to pay out the nose for severance and such
You don't pledge fiscal responsibility, then terminate a contract for no reason. She basically wasted multiple peoples lifetime of property taxes. She's a fucking half wit.
Correct me if I am wrong. But you are saying the new city manager fired the old city manager before she was even hired in the position. I think you are confusing the mayor and city manager. The mayor was elected, fired Chris Holden (old city manager) and hired nicki Anderson (new city manager). I think you are trying to say the mayor is a dictator. Just want to make that clear and they are very different positions
I don't know how you came to that conclusion. Masters ran on a platform of trimming down the fat and then fires a dude to plant her own crony. Who by the way is also on the real board now. This move costed us 800k.
Absolutely! Campaign lies about 15 percent operational efficiencies and then fires a "40 year employee in the middle of his contract" LMFAO sure sure that costs rate payers almost a million fucking dollars and then hires (installs) a manager to advancen her own agenda of capital intensive vanity projects. Banana republic of Regina tyrannical despot at the helm...
She fired Holden because he wasn't on board with her plans. Now we know why, it's a complete shit show. Like, we weren't in the greatest position before, but when the guy who's been doing it for 40 years through several administrations says "That's messed up, that won't work" maybe we should have listened to him?
[удалено]
No I fucking don’t. original comment they posted was ‘Installed a dictator as manager’. I want to know why they thought the city manager was a dictator. I asked nothing about the fucking mayor. Every cry baby is bring up the mayor. I don’t like this council any more than the rest of the residents. That’s why we need more than 23% voter turn out or this shot happens. Read everything from the parent comment on, you might actually learn something
https://www.regina.ca/news/Niki-Anderson-Named-New-City-Manager/ Edmonton experienced this. Maybe the title dictator was being kind? I would call this person something else, but that would be impolite. It's to do with her management style I personally wouldn't work for her just my two cents. Her way or the highway she was installed to facilitate vanity projects and now it's all coming to fruition. They terminated the old city manager because of "differences" in how they wanted the city to progress in the future...which is now playing out before our eyes. Didn't have to make a million dollar payment. More vanity. Things like fiscal responsibility LMFAO among others like making a difference in homelessness, etc.
A dictator is a political leader who possesses absolute power. (Installed current manager) A dictatorship is a state (municipal entity?) ruled by one dictator or by a small clique (Masters and Co.) Make sense hoss? You hung up on the word dictator it's maybe not the best description for her. Look nothing against Niki any person who was put in there to be sympathetic to this vanity nonsense would be a target. She's very smart, extremely educated, and connected she's so smart she's gonna do exactly what she's told when she's told to do it. As is abundantly clear to anyone watching what comes out of her office.
It is funny how the top levels of city hall are also all female. Guess the former City Manager didn’t fit the bill for Masters.
If I was starting a protest group, I would focus on expressing the dissatisfaction with those who are at the top of the hierarchy within city admin. Create some key speaking points of dissatisfaction that have been a direct result of these individuals. Keep it professional and legitimate as much as possible and don't lose focus. Above all, have a suggested solution to the noted problems. Is that replacement or resignation of these individuals? Is it demanding they take action on said key points of dissatisfaction? What else could be done? With that said, I don't really know what I'm talking about. Lol.
Raising the debt ceiling when interest rates are so high is so stupid. No sane head of a household would do that. And after all the broken promises about the football stadium, they have to assume we're all a bunch of idiots to think the arena is going to pay for itself from all the uses they claim will happen. The city needs to see how much money comes in and base the amount of money going out on that. Raising the debt ceiling is no different than rolling the dice in Vegas.
I think raising the debt ceiling for sports is beyond ridiculous. That being said, household budgets aren't economies. If I need more money I might get a second job or spend less. When an economy needs more money it has to either increase taxes, attract foreign investment (usually interest rate increases) or spent on economic stimulus. This is a pretty simplistic description of a more complicated topic, but think Canada's economic recovery post WW2 and it's correlation to rapid transit and freeway building. Which was later connected in the 60s to form the Trans Canada Highway. Just $.02. But for sports? Fuck that, we already KNOW that trickle down economics is bullshit.
If Semples want a new arena, they can pay for it.
Perfectly stated!

[City council approves spending request to increase debt limit by $330M](https://leaderpost.com/news/local-news/city-hall/city-council-approves-spending-request-to-increase-debt-limit-by-330m)
Good trouble YQR on insta are doing some good stuff! Just need to look around, lots of people protesting. There will be a protest at the ledge on June 30 to support queer & trans youth safety.
Why don’t they protest something that matters?
Real
Yes, protest something real.
https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2224983619554 On the morning edition she's routinely asked about the previous days council meeting and quickly controls the narrative each and every time. Deflect questions subverts the right of residents to ask for questions about the terrible decisions and repeat it ad nauseum.
OP I respect people that actually want to do something about the community they're in. I see so many posts about how their country is messed up but won't take the initiative to do something about it.
We need to gather the support of a large number of regina residents, basically a petition in principle that isn't outright anti development and has some nuance but has several actionable items that would at least satisfy the signatories. This would enhance the impact of protesting on behalf of the larger group of signatories as well as unify the messaging of said protest and give it significantly more legitimacy. Do you/we/anyone interested reading this have the time/skill/ability to set up a pretty basic website to this end as a first step? Or know anyone they could tap to do so? Two sign-ups to start out with, one just an email list to update people and have them come back to e-sign petition style for those unlikely to be able to protest etc, and the other a list of people who can/will get out in person when it is time. It has been busy busy times for me since we held our small rally the last time. Edit: https://discord.gg/wDchTTWD Here is a link to a discord I had set up a little bit previously I renamed and we can use for this, as I mentioned at the last protest it would be helpful to have some discussions among the like minded in a more persistent environment than Reddit.
I think with more than 24 hours notice, some postering and pushing it online, we could get a pretty good turnout.
I'd be happy to post it through my page on Facebook (we've got about 3700 members). I could DM the admins of a few other pages to get this shared too once it's all planned out
That would be awesome! (I follow your page btw. Great stuff!)
For sure. Getting a core group gathered on the/a discord would help with getting the word out as well though, and help with organizing ongoing/future efforts.
Sounds like a job for chat gpt

The city should only be paid to do 3 things. Provide water to homes, pick up garbage, maintain streets including snow removal. Why do we continue to build shit that private investment should build? Why are we footing the bill for these vanity projects? The entire council needs to be skidded IMO. Where the F are the damn lines on the road. They blamed the last snow fall we had and street sweeping being delayed. That was a 3 day delay….. the city that rhymes with Mismanagement.
Who would manage libraries, parks, recreation centres or playgrounds?
They're also in charge of zoning and development regulation.
lol you have no idea what cities do.
Nailed it!
Yknow, I never thought the city would be so poorly that I was wishing Fourgere... Or even *Fiacco*, were in charge. But holy shit. Masters has to be stopped.
The main reason I don't protest is I don't want to be homeless myself, so I need to work 9 hours a day and come home tired just to barely be able to pay rent and bills. Let's be honest, if REAL wants to go into debt without looking at what they bring in already, they deserve to. Any recent event hosted by REAL hasn't been good, and they are only going to get worse. Best we can hope for is that somebody sees that them hemorrhaging money is more important than trying to get tourists to see how screwed up our city is
But you see, it is OUR money that they are hemorrhaging. They're a publicly owned corporation. The lack of oversight by city administration and pandering by the mayor is what is allowing it to happen.
Not really my money, I just pay rent, technically it’s my landlords money at that point. The fact that anybody in charge misuses money is old news and hoping we can hold our breath long enough for us to change that is just naive
And if the landlords taxes go up don't you think he will might pass on that expense to his tenants? For most landlords, their properties are a business and they won't be the ones swallowing that extra expense.
I live in an apartment so they are for profit. They’ll give me notice before my lease is up, then I move or make do. Either way, once I pay rent it’s still not my money.
The unfortunate reality is most cannot be bothered and have been conditioned to believe it wouldn’t make a difference. The unfortunate thing is collective action is incredibly effective but we’re far to passive in this part of the country to do anything about it.
You'd probably need a huge protest with thousands of people or to embarrass the city on social media to get them to listen. Both seem unlikely over the minor annoyance of 3 lanes of traffic not having painted lines (unless accidents start happening because of it). Or perhaps we'd need a decent human being to gain support (starting now) and run for mayor next time. I can't imagine a ton of citizens were thrilled to choose between corrupt old farts and unknown crackpots last time. Not sure how old Masters even is; the makeup and Photoshop is deceiving. She's probably in her 50s at least. [But when you look at the candidates,](https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5780688) she looks the youngest/most vibrant, she would be the first female mayor, and she promised a pool. Other than that, basically all the candidates claimed infrastructure was a top priority and pretty much all said the same things about a responsible budget, fixing COVID, and making the city more fun. I doubt many people would passionately support any of those candidates with their weak presences, bland promises, or known corruption. So it's like, "Might as well vote Masters to show we're not stuck in the Stone Age. A new pool would be nice, too." But good luck finding someone we can all be passionate about. Potholes, painted lines, and hobos aren't very exciting topics. And candidates talking about walking around Wascana Lake, building a Deadpool statue, or dancing in public don't seem like the most useful people around. Tldr: We'll keep having the same issues as long as the candidates are low tier.
This. ↑ Also, it's pretty much the same problem with every level of politics, especially these days: people get led into thinking there's only 2 people to choose from. It was Sandra Masters vs Michael Fougere in our last election who combined to received around 80% of the total votes even though there were 9 candidates (granted there were a couple wackados on that list not worth any votes. But that's how the wealth campaign donors, who want their agendas followed, make it. The others who can't get the backing fall into the background, and the average voter can't be bothered to do the research on all candidates much less their policies and wind up voting for whoever they remembered most from the TV commercials they see.
I think we're getting to the point where potholes and painted lines are exactly what people would get excited about. If a candidate promised me that they would address this and cut out the other nonsense expenditures, they'd get my vote.
Its amazing how easy if it is to turn this city around. STOP BUILDING NEW NEIGHBOURHOODS/BUILDINGS.
In real life? No. On this subreddit? Yes.
Are you sure about that? I haven't talked to very many people who seem to be thrilled with the way things are going, especially lately with the road work problems out there. I think a lot of people are pretty fed up.
There was a < 30% voter turnout for the election so the numbers kind of prove the non-sub members don't really gaf.
They may be fed up with some of those things but those things are not what this sub likes to talk about. People out there don't really give a shit about homelessness and those sorts of things. They're thinking about things that affect their daily lives like taxes, roads, etc. This sub is exceedingly out of touch when it comes to so many things but I just chalk it up to age and naivety.
Hence why I'm bringing it up?
Yes road work is a huge city concern for most people but you put it below homelessness in your original post which is why I replied.
I think both of them are serious issues that affect different factions of the population. For the folks that are homeless I'm going to say that the road work issues aren't a huge concern. Maybe try thinking beyond just yourself for a minute.
The city is not going to fix addiction, crime and poverty so they won't be fixing homelessness. That's just some bizarre pipe dream. Every single level of gov't has to do it and people will need to agree to pay way more taxes. Good luck.
Not sure more taxes are required beyond short term focused funding. Reduce addiction issues reduces crime costs such as police, courts, jails, etc. On the health front it reduces ER visits, STIs, HIV etc. Doing nothing is far more expensive for taxpayers.
People also need to want to fix themselves. BC sort of leads the way in things involving addiction and it sure hasn't gotten better there. As long as there's freedom we'll have these issues. It's never going away.
>They may be fed up with some of those things but those things are not what this sub likes to talk about. People out there don't really give a shit about homelessness and those sorts of things. They're thinking about things that affect their daily lives like taxes, roads, etc. > . . . You're speaking from your own perspective. Which leads me to believe that you don't surround yourself with people who's morals/ideals align with *homelessness and those sorts of things* (community aid). I can assure you there are many community lead initiatives that aim to aid needy people. Just because you don't participate in them doesn't mean that they aren't around. >This sub is exceedingly out of touch when it comes to so many things but I just chalk it up to age and naivety. > I was going to say the same thing about your opinion! Wild.
We can look at the most recent satisfaction survey (which can be accessed [here](https://open.regina.ca/dataset/citizen-satisfaction-survey-city-of-regina)) to get some hard data on this. According to the survey (conducted in fall 2021), the top most important issues for citizens are: o housing cost/affordability (17%) o taxes/fiscal responsibility (10%) o public safety/crime/policing (9%) o roads/sidewalks/snow/garbage (7%) o infrastructure/services (7%) Poverty/social issues clocks in at 5% of respondents who consider it the most important issue (number 7 on the list). When you look at spending priorities, 3% of respondents think it should be the top spending priority. This survey obviously isn't perfect - there might be concerns of bias since it was commissioned and published by the city itself. It's also entirely possible that priorities have shifted since fall 2021 since this data predates the whole homelessness lawsuit fiasco. All that said, I consider it a better representation of the city's priorities than this subreddit. Don't take my word for it though, if you haven't read it I'd highly consider checking out.
To be fair, though, housing cost/affordability as well as public safety items both have huge overlap with the homelessness issue.
I imagine most people are only invested in those issues insofar as they directly benefit from it. They'd have likely picked the poverty/social issues option if their main concern were housing the homeless specifically. That said, it's true that addressing affordability/housing costs would help homelessness so I think you have a fair point worth mentioning.
Public safety and crime and policing are really just another category for pverty and social issues though.
I've never said there aren't real people who care about those social initiatives but that is much lower on the list for the general public than this sub would have people believe. I really hope you don't think this sub is representative of this city.
Well said
Yep, we need a whole new city council and mayor, millenials.... assemble.... But seriously, we need to start running for office If were going to salvage our doing society. No one else is going to do it but our generation. I hate to say it, but the last generation sold us out and gave up. I have kids. I want them to actually have it better than me by a lot and the only way that happens is with sweeping reforms to almost everything about the current system. Again... millenials, assemble.
A lot of us who want to are working so hard to keep our heads above water, there's no time or energy to organize
Isn’t that interesting how that works out? The system working as it was designed to.
I have accepted the fact that they are going to keep building stupid shit that I will never use and my property tax's will increase every single year. They have unlimited funds. Why would they ever stop?
They don't have unlimited funds actually. They are going to ask the provincial government to raise the debt ceiling another $300 million or so to make up for the shortfall. This whole thing is going to, in one way or another, come out of every single one of our pockets.
Not if I move first...
Yes but even if they get turned down for this $300 million. Can't they just raise taxes?
It's all public money. We're paying for it one way or another.
We complain about others taking our money, yet we don't complain about our brothers taking it right from our mouths.
It's turning into a shit hole. It's getting worse by the year.
the roads are awful. trying to bike any where is a pain. i can't seem to keep my eyes out for vehicles cause i am too busy watching out for huge pot holes.
Because we are the most apathetic city in the country. We could not give 1 cent of bother about anything at all.
Because it's a waste of time.
I be donw but don't know how to organize
You just do it, kind of like falling downhill once you start. I organized the last one with like zero notice on the day and we got ~30 people in total to come out.
Well yes, but also no. Lol. Folks definitely need to know how to effectively organize. Some good books are let this radicalize you, organizing for power, fighting to win. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, there are strategies that have been proven to work.
That's cool and good to know
I definitely recommend giving more notice than I did though lmao. I linked a discord in another comment that would be good if we can get the activist minded people to join so we can coordinate and discuss more easily.
we’re busy.
So am I, that's an issue. But this is important, dammit!
Can you provide some solid fact based information on how REAL is being mismanaged? Not hyperbole, Not just pointing to the CEO, what are the staff who work there doing to mismanage the place?
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/regina-council-meeting-real-1.6852658
This does not explain what is being mismanaged. I borrowed money to float my business and the bank didn't I was mismanaging my company. Again, I ask what is being mismanaged? Is staff stealing? No budget control? Are they signing bad deals?
The next city council meeting is this Wednesday at 1pm 👀
No Presentations. Democracy, wha?
sorry gotta worry about all the identity politics first, trans story time for children is the #1 issue today, ignore billionaires doubling their wealth while pretending the price of oil is some how near record highs while it's actually half that........do you ever think you're getting played?
It's possible to take up multiple causes...
oh yeah, that's working out great for fixing society's problems.....
Because taking on problems one at a time would work sooo much better...
didn't fix problem 1, move onto problem 2, didn't fix it either....time for problem 3......oh why not another 793420582 at once too, might as well if you're just more interested in complaining than fixing things
Says the guy complaining and not providing solutions either...
nobody wants to solve these problems, they want their ideology to solve them, even when constantly hit in the face with failure
And your solution is to wallow in your own self pity?
yes, but that is for my own personal issues
We have billionaires in Regina, doubling their wealth?
The protest comes when we vote, and it can't come soon enough.
That isn't soon enough. There's problems now. I'm not going to wait for once every 4 years to have my voice heard.
I believe that was Master's reply when asked about the mishandling of the sale of land by the upgrader- if you don't like it vote me out at the next election. Great leadership there!
Fuck the city and everyone else involved with all these stupid ideas.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/regina-homeless-camps-city-1.6880305
If anyone wants to drop off donations at city hall to show your support we would really appreciate it. Water, coats or sweaters, snacks like granola bars, fruit or pudding/yogurt or whatever! We gotta stick together.
Also coffee! I understand we are all hurting right now with cost of living and inflation but if anyone wants to drop off those big coffee cartons from McDonald’s or Tim’s we would love that. People are always coming up and asking for warm drinks like coffee and tea.
These are professionals their work speaks for itself

Lol this popped up on my feed and for a while I thought we were discussing Calgary !!
We haven’t printed enough pamphlets
Yes same wavelength. Especially for the homeless. What should a person do
How many protests against government work? There are no consequences for government officials, so they don't have to please the citizens.
