My 96y/o Great Grandma was having trouble. Her apartment’s AC vent blew directly into her eyes to the point she couldn’t watch TV or read anymore. I made a cardboard vent cover to go over the vent & reverse the air flow direction.

MidTownMotel

You are a good grandson, I wish every little old lady had someone like you.

HandMadeFeelings

Thanks! :D Maw Maw (What I call my great grandma) was worrying she was going blind. She went to the eye doctor and he said it was extreme eye dryness from the vent blowing in her eyes. Im a woodworker as a hobby and could have made something prettier with more time but I went for practicality over beauty this time.

klockworx

No judgement or offense intended..but can't you just remove the vent plate..turn it in the other direction and put it back on?...can't quite see..maybe I'm offbase.

sardine7129

Op says it blew in all directions so turning it wouldnt have worked.

Beanakin

We had one that blew into the kitchen, right near the stove and another near the table. Cooled food too fast, made it stone cold on the table. We ended up taping a piece of paper to the ceiling next to the vent as a redirect. Don't remember if we took it down when we moved out.

azewonder

My window ac is missing the air direction thingys, and blows away from where I spend most of my time. Unnecessarily cools the other side of the room lol. I taped cardboard on the side and now it blows more to where I need it.

davedude420

Ceiling diffusers are cheap. $20-30 tops. If it's just a register $5-10 This guy wanted to make that shit. It looks damn good too.

aDrunkWithAgun

No and depending on how old those vents are they need to be cleaned

Tenantfornow

That’s what I was thinking 🤔

blove135

I have a few of these in my house except they are magnetic. They work great. My house was built in the 20's and has had several major renovations back in the 60s and 80s only they didn't bother to move some of the vents so I end up with things like a vent directly behind the toilet in the bathroom.

Timmyty

How have maw maw's eyes been recently? Is she also throwing in regular eye drops?

HandMadeFeelings

She just started eye drops too!

MidTownMotel

Nicely done I’d say.

ripeart

Wish my grandmother was still alive so I could do stuff for her. 😢

GarThor_TMK

Why doesn't this exist?!?!

flushyjames

It does. You unscrew the vent and screw it back in the other way or buy a new directional vent.

GarThor_TMK

I meant the sub, not the directional vents

TheOneStooges

Ha! Lol Whatever ! NOT nearly as satisfying !

djmagichat

Yeah my grandparents just bought a clip on plastic duct to do it. This was 30 years ago.

uencos

/r/RedneckEngineering does though

GarThor_TMK

We are in redneck engineering

ThroatMeYeBastards

I think that's the joke but I could be wrong

Brainlessdad

We are in a joke though

DandyEmo

More like r/Amazonboxengineering

ForUseAtWorkx

That may mold. You may want to look at something plastic.

glastonight

We don´t want mold in maws eyes!

KimJongIlSunglasses

Would the AC air dry it out? I’d be more worried about a fire hazard if she uses this in the winter with the heater.

vthokiemr

Cardboard’s flashpoint is 800 F (427 C). How hot do you set your thermostat??

LASTSAMURAIUFC

700° kelvin

AreYouConfused_

they ait degrees kelvin, it's just 700 kelvin

PloppyCheesenose

Correct, but more importantly, 700 K is way too hot to set your thermostat. That is beyond the supercritical point for water, which means you have to store all of your beer in the fridge.

Hydlyde

The science checks out.

iammonkeyorsomething

How hot is that compared to the sun?

Elon_huskx

700 K is actually not that hot. 700 K=426.85°C=800.33°F The sun's surface is 5.778 K (5.505 °C/9940.73 °F) The sun's core on the other hand is sitting at a whopping 15 million K (15 million°C/27 million°F) For reference : You could achieve 700 K in a pizza oven. Tungsten (the metal that has the highest melting point) melts at 3.695 K. And sometimes, nuclear explosions reach temperatures as high as 100 million K or even more (this happens for less than a second tho, the sun's core has been as hot as it is for billions of years)

StaceyPfan

Still, don't stick your hand in.

[deleted]

Well, old folks do like to keep it warm..

ForUseAtWorkx

In humid places condensate can form on vents

obvthroway2

On the inside surfaces, sure. But the outside will be below-ambient and exposed to the warm, humid layer of air at the top of the room.

natooDidou

Since plastic AC pipes get mouldy and needs to be cleaned from time to time, I wouldn't trust it to dry cardboard enough to avoid mold... Plastic of aluminium would be best options, less redneck but safer

NamityName

Ac air will make it moist. The cold air holds less water than warm air. Before, the ac turns on, the air around the vent is warm. When it turns on, the air cools. It loses heat, but not water. but since the air is colder, it can't hold as much water which has to go somewhere. So that excess water condenses into a liquid on surfaces. In short, an AC will make the air dryer (or not depending on if we are talking relative or absolute humidity) but will make surfaces wetter. With the coldest surfaces becoming the most wet.

youshouldsee

those coldest surfaces should be inside the ac, and it should have a solution for that condensing water or it shouldn't be called an air conditioner.

NamityName

Sure. The coldest surfaces (and most condensation) are in the AC. But you can't ignore the little bit of moisture that will build up on any of the other surfaces that are colder than ambient air. Not when that surface is cardboard.

r0llinlacs420

Some people's grasp on the sciences is lacking. Severely. 120 degree air isn't going to ignite cardboard for gods sake. Not even close. Use some common sense. It's not blowing fire out the vent.

nachocat090

Wait fires not supposed to come out??

r0llinlacs420

No way man. You gotta pay extra for that.

ThroatMeYeBastards

*gasp* You mean the underfunded schools are failing us? Check your tone dog.

allonsy_badwolf

Yeah they actually make a ton that either get screwed in or even just a magnetic one that sticks on so it’s easy to remove. This is a great help at the moment but I’d want grandma to have something a little safer!

justanotherdrop79

I've used one of those disposable plastic paint trays to redirect a floor vent, and it's working pretty well (And less than $5!)

duo_sonic

I'll have you know I'm a HVAC tech and I approve of this

iTakeCreditForAwards

What about mold or possible fire hazard on heat? Genuine question

vacunas

I think you would pass out of heat before that thing lights up in fire

enadiz_reccos

That just sounds like being burned alive with an extra step

kkeut

air + cardboard = fire? how exactly would that work?

iTakeCreditForAwards

Idk I just read it in another comment. My thought was the continued use of a heater might just be enough but a lot of people chimes in and it’s not haha

duo_sonic

If your ducts are past 451 degrees Fahrenheit( the temp paper burns ) then you have more issues than a weird diffuser. Ac is a dehumidifier so the moist moisture is at the coil..so also a non issue

xAIRGUITARISTx

Lmao people downvoting the HVAC tech this place is ridiculous

duo_sonic

Honestly I could care less I like when people like it quote unquote professional cuz I charge them 10 times as much as they would spend doing it themselves.... I got to have a job if you wanted to look fancy that's cool ...bam .. 500 bucks

wezerl

Not every AC can produce heat, some can only cool as far as I'm aware.

OoglieBooglie93

This looks like a ventilation spot in a ceiling. Which means there's probably a separate furnace.

sofalife

i've seen a lot of Folgers Metal cans used in home ductwork.. think i might have a picture saved.

duo_sonic

My father-in-law still has a 70% off from when his home was built and he custom made his own ducks out of their old trailer siding because he refused to pay extra for them to be installed and it's worked fine like that for 45 years.

duo_sonic

Mind you it's all wrong... none of its sized correctly but it doesn't matter it's a natural draft furnace. Now when somebody goes to install modern ecm furnace in there oh they're going to be fucked to the next owners of the house will need a complete new duct system

Leothe3rd

Ah yes. The AmazonBasics AC vent. Got one of those as an add-on item when I bought a replacement HDMI cord.

Halfbloodjap

The keep at 0° or lower in pic 4 was a nice touch

HandMadeFeelings

Totally by accident! I only noticed it after I installed it, seriously!

moeyjarcum

You know you can just take the two screws out and flip 180

HandMadeFeelings

Wouldn’t work. The vent blew air in all four directions. I needed a vent that blew only one direction, away from my Great Grandma.

LucidLethargy

Why not just tape up the 1/4 that pointed her direction?

codeByNumber

Pshh, that would look silly.

BebopBandit

Take the vent out, cut out a piece of cardboard or plastic that will cover the side that blows at her, put it on top (the inside) and tape it in, put vent back up. The problem side is now blocked and the room will be better heated / cooled since air will still flow out the other 3 sides

djdeadly

I’ve never seen four way vents only two way but that’s interesting to know they have those at home

wcollins260

Look up at any restaurant or office with the drop in acoustic ceiling tiles. They always have the four way vents, looks like a group of concentric squares.

djdeadly

I meant more in a residential place

ijustwanafap

I've got one in my house. It's like the normal rectangle where the two sides blow one way, and the middle blows perpendicular, except the middle is split and also blows both ways.

hispeedzintarwebz

I had a friend in college that blew both ways

wcollins260

I mean probably not so much nowadays. But apartment buildings sometimes will use equipment and fixtures similar to what you’d see in a commercial building. Judging by the size of that vent, it is not your typical residential vent you see in modern homes.

MagicMauiWowee

They are very common in nursing homes and residential facilities

A-Salty-Squid

I had these in a cheap college town apartment like 8 years ago. They are terrible.

MightySamMcClain

He's probably referring to a diffuser

creasedearth

God bless GG

hab136

> I needed a vent that blew only one direction, They make those; they’re about $20. They also make magnetic vent covers, that are like $5 for a three pack. They make adhesive ones too in case your vent isn’t metallic. For $0, your solution works pretty good. Another $0 solution would have been to wrap some cloth around the vent on one side.

dumb-reply

No.

moeyjarcum

Si.

TheManicMonocle

Does it work? (Not doubting, just genuinely curious).

HandMadeFeelings

It does! I spent a lot of time hot gluing the seams air tight so the airflow only goes out the vent slits in the direction I want it to.

drunkdial_me

If it matters at all, Lowes sells a few different ones for a more permanent solution.

Montana4th

Looks good! I bet it would look a lot more polished if you spray painted it

KimJongIlSunglasses

Yeah fucking paint it white and cut the edges evenly. Or actually make like a trim around the edges.

tcarter1936

New one way or 3 way vent is like 25$ retail... just saying lol. Good looking out for granny though.

jaredthegeek

Why didn't you just remove the vent and turn it? Did it just blast straight down?

HandMadeFeelings

It was a four-directional vent, so it would blow the same four directions however I turned it.

jaredthegeek

Well done solution.

cafcintheusa

You can buy them cheap from your local hardware store that aim in all different directions.

MildMischief80

Nice work, but I'd just turn the whole vent around.

HandMadeFeelings

Four directional vent

Arkaynine

Dude, just turn the vent?

ffhurdss

This is amazing, but I want to say because grandma's health is really precious that be careful there's no chance of it growing mold, or you will be endangering her lung health

HandMadeFeelings

In time I may replaced it with a DIY varnished wood or plastic cover. I think I have time because cooling air de-humidifies it, reducing the chance of mold.

KimJongIlSunglasses

Could you just build a wooden frame and then install whatever style vent you want on the bottom side? Essentially a “vent adapter. ”

Phallys

You're going to need that air

HandMadeFeelings

Lol, typo. Meant mold.

Phallys

I know, I just couldn't resist :P

ffhurdss

Sounds beautiful I have no idea but I would assume u have time too, I love what u did

[deleted]

Should be able to pick up a two-way diffuser at a local HVAC supply house or big box hardware store for less than $20.

r0llinlacs420

Oh I absolutely love how these architects give no flying fucks to where the vents point. There's a fucking clean air return vent *in my bathroom*! It's painfully obvious some people cheated to get through school and get the jobs they get.

[deleted]

[удалено]

r0llinlacs420

The entire house smelling like shit when somebody takes a shit, is a *huge* problem. I'm no HVAC expert. But the vents where the furnace pulls air from have always been called clean air return vents in any conversation I've ever had. And I've had conversations about the location of the vent and have been told by numerous people that putting them in kitchens and bathrooms is a no-no. And it's easy to see why.

[deleted]

[удалено]

r0llinlacs420

I said I'm no expert, and no there isn't one in my kitchen too, that's just what I've been told. It was the laziest furnace install ever. Both, whatever you want to call them, I'll call them intake vents, are on both sides of the closet the furnace is in. That puts one in the bathroom and one in a bedroom. It's not even a 1ft run on either side. Anyways i blocked the one in the bathroom. Not only does it make the house smell like shit, I don't want the furnace sucking in humid air from the bathroom, and I don't appreciate the bathroom turning into the North Pole every time the furnace kicks on.

sonofdavidsfather

I am legit impressed. Gotta take care of the Nana.

kbgman7

As a guy that tests ventilation for a living - that’s fucking good!

d4rkh3lm3t

Very kind of you... but would it not have been faster just to run to HD or Lowes and buy a real one?

Nanocephalic

I have young kids and with all the arts-and-crafts stuff we do, I have been trained to see cardboard as a solution to many problems.

Macborgaddict

had this problem often. my solution was to unscrew the register, turn it 180 degrees, and screw it back in. ding!

Grab_Stet

Amazon should run a contest for the best up-cycling of their boxes - and I'd nominate this.

“Keep frozen at 0° F” How cold is your AC?!

imuniqueaf

Very clever. For what is worth, they do make this product out of plastic and it attaches with magnet.

pharmerK

This is much more sophisticated than the paper plate we taped to the ceiling in the pharmacy.

Neinstein11

*Keep frozen at 0°C* No wonder she lives for so long.

Not-Noah

Things like this are what I strive to do for my grandparents. Just trying to go above and beyond to save them time, trouble, and money (even though they're well off) and make their lives just a little bit better for the last year's I've got with them. Gonna go buy a $1000 computer? I'll build you one. Need a nice desk? I'll build you one. Need surround sound speakers for your golf cart but only want to use your old *CD walkman as the power source* cause you wont allow more than two wires to be seen? Dear god in heaven it's ugly inside, but it works. I don't think there's a better feeling in this world than helping your grandparents ~~cheaply~~ efficiently solve a problem that's been troubling them. *I'd have to guess heroin's probably a close second though* Love you meemaw & pawpaw 😚❤️

WheresJonNow

That’s weirdly well built. Like Nintendo Labo level

LetThereBeLighting

Could you possibly just unscrew the existing vent cover and turn it the other way?

HandMadeFeelings

Nah, four directional vent

LetThereBeLighting

Gah. Sonovabich.

Exotic-Yam-1725

Someone tell him he could have flipped the vent.

HandMadeFeelings

No, its a four directional vent. Literally a dozen people made that exact comment without ever read the other comments saying that exact thing and me giving the same reply.

iamHAMSOLO

You are a legend among us. Heck yeah!

bmwsoldatome

The “keep frozen” thats awesome!!!

crazy_crackhead

Great work! I tried to do something similar to redirect the air from our swamp cooler so it would aim more into the rooms. You definitely went above and beyond on your craftsmanship!

Nanocephalic

I did this with a cardboard box once. Let’s just say that it wasn’t very pretty. This redirector is fantastic cardboard construction!

Arcal

Mix up some epoxy and brush it on, you got yourself a permanent solution.

Nanocephalic

Be like u/HandMadeFeelings by being the person your grandma tells you that you already are.

HandMadeFeelings

Aww, thanks!

Redschallenge

Why not unscrew it and turn it 180⁰?.......

HandMadeFeelings

It was a four-directional vent

xilshin

Clever girl.

buckynugget

that not redneck as much as caring

Nite7678

I don't know about you guys but I think this one falls into that category of smart redneck engineering. If he painted it white I don't think you would know that it was cardboard.

nochinzilch

Or you could have just spun the existing vent 180 degrees.

HandMadeFeelings

Wouldn’t work. The vent blew air in all **four directions**. I needed a vent that blew only **one direction**, away from my Great Grandma.

MidTownMotel

Can you see the vent? Do you think OP is stupid and wouldn’t have thought of that if it were that simple?

Mr1277

Huh, I unscrewed two screws, turned mine around and screwed it back on. But hey, you do you

Plz_dont_judge_me

According to OP it was a four directional vent

justjayhere_

Amazon box for the win!

sessimon

Nice work. Seriously. Now I’d like to see you engineer a cosplay outfit.

Onihonker

Careful if it gets wet it will mold.

tendieful

Lol Instead of just taking down the vent and reversing it People fucking kill me

acciosnitch

Literally read the comments. OP has explained that it went in four directions.

NotTheBurnerAccount

Nice job man !

TheOneStooges

You rocketh

MildMischief80

Or buy the correct vent cover

GeeTheCurious

Hell yeah

Cookingrawmeat

Look up air register deflectors. They do the same job but are plastic and won’t cause a mold issue.

TheObservantOtter

Why not just reverse the vent?

WhatDaufuskie

Nice! Common cubicle worker bee hack

minousht

Some of our vents have plastic covers that scoop the air away from the walls and more towards the center of the room. It comes up when I google directional air vent covers, if you want a more permanent solution

PerfectUnlawfulness

Get a 3d printer, then you can print toys like every other grown man with one. Or something useful like this

aragornelessar86

I mean, probably would have been easier and cheaper to buy a new one that doesn't blow 4 directions.

qpv

That's awesome nice work.

Revanov

I just realized I’m a redneck since this is something I can see myself doing. I’m Asian btw.

RENOxDECEPTION
