I see with the sixth track that Wilson will branch out into sea shanties like we've always wanted him to.

DrewciferK

"Hyarrr, we live in a society me mateys." -Steven Wilson, probably

jimmycranberry

It's time for the genre everyone's been waiting for, pirate prog metal.

BlueArmistice

Nobody tell this guy about Alestorm's "Wooden Leg Pt. 2 (The Woodening)"

rudiiiiiii

But this has been a thing since at least 2004… #leviathan

Dysmae

🤣

mummy__napkin

gonna be cautiously optimistic with this one. didn't Steven say not too long ago that he no longer has any interest in [prog] rock music? why is he bringing PT back all of a sudden?

Hushabye85

He said that prog rock did not inspire him and wanted to try something different. But he also said that he still very much loves prog. Musicians and songwriters tend to change the source of inspiration constantly.

annaoni

I remember him hating on retro prog bands and making The Raven just a few years later.

Hushabye85

It’s like people change and inspirations change.

annaoni

It was a reply to mummy. I missclicked. I really hate iPhones. Tech in general.

rhododendronweasley

sell it, buy a cheaper phone and keep the rest of the money. profit!

I gave you a thumbs up for the question alone. I do have an answer, which i think someone mentioned on here too... Artists who have some innate ability to channel their feelings into musical notes, even Bach or Mozart, will just GO WITH IT and see what happens. Steven Wilson, being one of the most successful musicians ever, fortunately has the freedom to experiment a lot. There are millions of incredible musicians/artists out there who don't have that freedom.

inhalingsounds

Maybe he got tired of being Prince as imagined in Radiohead's OK Computer world?

saxmancooksthings

Did the new single not sound ‘prog’ to you?

Penz0id

His pop album bombed so he's gotta get more cash out of his legacy fans. e: /s

Hushabye85

Nah. It did not bomb. His two latest solo records were commercially pretty succesful and bigger than ever. He was talking about making another PT album months before TFB was released.

smalldogproductions

That's absolutely right! And, For all those who say he went back to prog rock because his solo album flopped.. Not true at all. Steven Wilson does a lot more work and has far more finances than people realize. He has, after all, over decades, been producing and mixing other bands, artists, etc, and more... Winning so many awards year after year for his engineering and mastering work in surround sound... If people would stop guessing, they would realize that Steven Wilson's (or any other successful musician) lives don't just revolve around what is released publicly on channels.

The new track sounds like something I had already listened to. Lately my brain seems to value more things that sound familiar but put something new on the table at the same time. I found TFB really underwhelming at first but it has grown on me and I keep returning to it more than any Wilson album. It doesn't move me as in HCE but it's just addictive.

tankshred

Isn’t dignity a recent opeth song title?

Memorphous

It is the English translation of *Svekets prins*, yes.
