Back to Black is such a depressing album but indisputably brilliant. It's gets so much more distressing when you read about the reasons that led to making of the album. But you know she is singing from her bones and the lyrics are so poignant.
Valerie and Love Is A Losing are absolute classics and easily my favourites besides 'Back to Black' and Rehab which I already knew and love.
Frank is a relatively less darker album and therefore easier to listen to in that sense .' Take The Box' has to be my favourite.
Overall listening to new songs and reading about the artists is a very exciting and engrossing process. Learning about the backstories behind the songs really enhances your listening experience.

I'm being rude which I really don't like but I am really tired. And this is not to anyone in specific. It's also pisses me off when people start to go off about her erratic captions and social media use. The last time she had permission to use social media freely like all of us, smartphones weren't even a thing yet. Facebook wasn't even a thing yet. We all had our cringe phases online and the time to watch social media culture grow in front of our eyes and understand how to behave in it (and a LOT of people still don't know)... she didn't have that chance.

it's just ignorant thing to say. someone who was in an abusive conservatorship for over a decade (not to mention her life prior to it) isn't automatically gonna be mentally stable once they have been released. it's only been two months and she didn't grow up in the era of social media so she doesn't know the etiquettes of it. i feel like people are really impatient when it comes to victims of abuse, it takes a long time to heal
I always see that on this sub 😭 half of the comments in any Britney post will be like “see, her fans wanted her to be free but they didn’t expect she would act like this!” What a unique point! And those that insist she is mentally ill and needs therapy. Can anyone share what it felt like to have their wisdom coming in?
My mouth, specifically my lower jaw has been experiencing pain for about a week now. It started at the tail end of having COVID but now that I'm over COVID it's only gotten worse. I thought it was just a COVID thing maybe but my god my bottom left jaw feels so fucked now and I feel a *pressure* in it and it's all I can think about. My ability to open my jaw has lessened.
I don't have any insurance at all so I'm like ughhhhhh to even get it checked out and I don't even want to think about the price of getting a tooth taken out if that's what's needed.
i had my jaw feel pressure like you said & i heard creaking. it was hard to chew as well. i had insurance & it didn't cover that procedure. it cost 1K. thankfully when my grandma was alive she helped me pay it off with her credit. you must pay a lot of insurance money to cover it. most dentist procedures are out of pocket. be prepared to spend money. my dentist office offers payment plans. they did a payment plan for my braces after my wisdom teeth procedure.
I was in this position last year, I hope I’m remembering it correctly - once my wisdom teeth started to come in, it was a bit hard for me to eat and use my jaw. On one side of my mouth specifically where the tooth was definitely poking out, I couldn’t put any pressure there or it would hurt. I don’t really recall too much other than this, afaik my wisdom teeth just came in super quickly and then it started to hurt like I described, nothing bad happened before.
I also got my wisdom teeth removed almost a year ago from now (last February 5). I’d recommend going to a consultation for a doctor to look at your teeth, they’ll tell you how to proceed (some people are lucky and don’t need to take them out, but if you do it’s much easier to get it done earlier rather than later, or when you’re older). If you have to get them removed later this year, don’t worry too much about it. My anxiety leading up to my surgery was worse than the surgery itself, I don’t even remember going to sleep for it. I was able to (slowly and carefully) eat chicken tenders just under 2 weeks post surgery, and after a month I felt much better.
I have an appointment for this Friday!!!

I'm not scared of the dentist but the thought of experiencing pain in my mouth or something getting so bad to the point it's irreparable does freak me tf out because once your teeth get fucked: welp that's it. And I really like my smile so I don't want my mouth to get ruined sdfahsdfjkahsdf. my dentist already confirmed that I develop cavities so incredibly easily bc the grooves in my tooth are so hard to clean.
If it comes to having to get them removed: i'm going to request to get knocked out with the strongest drugs possible pls get me hopped tf up idc

I know in your original post you said you were worried about the cost of getting them removed but I really do think you should look into doing so, especially because it if hurts now it’ll just keep getting worse and worse, not to mention potentially ruin your other teeth as well. I get cavities pretty easily as well, I understand that struggle lol. At my consultation, they weighted me and based my dose of general anesthesia for the surgery on that. The worst thing about it at the surgery was that they pricked the needle right into my hand, and once I woke up I was confused about where I was for a second. I instinctively moved my hand which hurt momentarily because the needle was still in it lol. But other than that I would really recommend taking anesthesia and being asleep for the surgery, it made it super easy and quick. Also, if you have your surgery in the morning when you’re still sleepy that might help. They make you take a pill about 30 minutes before, and you can’t eat for a number of hours before the surgery.
I thought about it and shelling out however many thousands it may be to the dentist would be lot easier than waiting for them to make me suffer to the point where the only option left is to have the doctors in an emergency room yank them out for free. ty Canada for not covering dental and eyeballs. if I have to: I will sell pictures of my feet to be able to afford it aha. ^(this is 1/4th sarcasm.)

There’s only a lucky few people whose mouths are big enough to fit their wisdom teeth without them having any substantial impact, but for the rest of us peasants it’s better to yeet them asap
Okay, I think mine are in/ coming in and while it’s hurts a little it hasn’t been bad however I did notice I would feel like a pulsating pain and also noted I kept feeling in my mouth to see what was wrong and bam it was my wisdom teeth.
I didn’t get headaches but I felt like I needed to bite on something, I had pressure and general discomfort in my jaw (at first I assumed I was grinding my teeth again), and sometimes I’d get pain when I ate/drank hot and cold stuff. My gums were sensitive too.
I have all of those!!!! YES feeling the need to bite on something is exactly what I have but didn't know how to put into words. Like I just keep chomping nothing because I feels like there's something for me to chomp. It's odd.
Okay now I'm scared they are my wisdom teeth making an appearance uh oh.

A 2 hour lecture is a lot! Especially on Zoom when you can’t really interact with anybody and the material isn’t very engaging. What helped me *a lot* is ticking every 15 minutes. Eight 15-minute chunks felt a lot more manageable than a huge 2-hour block
It’s interesting, I actually tend to greatly prefer online classes over in person classes, so normally I would really enjoy this schedule. I’m really thankful I have it. Last quarter though I have classes twice a week, with one day 4 hours straight of lectures, and I guess that really took a toll on my energy levels for school because I still feel exhausted from it

Not sure how old you are, or if you have a decent night scene where you live. But I’ve made tons of friends by just exploring dive bars around town and just being open for conversation.
I met a couple of my friends from concerts. Also, like what everyone else said, hobbies are a great way to make friends. I made a couple from taking cooking classes at a local center.
The reason it’s so easy to make friends in school is because you’re forced to be in the same place every day so you are in close contact over and over again. Leverage that
so for example, I became friendly with a coworker, and we just stayed coworkers that chatted about work stuff, but over a 1+ year period we kept clicking and become the coworkers that send memes all day back and forth, eventually he invited me out and I met his friends and even my now gf and that whole friend group through him.
Another good thing is to pick a hobby and do it regularly. I go rock climbing and go 2-3x a week. I’ve made a couple ancillary friends from going to the same gym for years that I know and chat with. If I was desperate for friends I would probably ask to come along next time they were gonna climb outside, and from there who knows.
I’ve also made a few friends from tinder dates that went fine, but there was something missing but we had similar interests.
I think the key is, it takes time, you gotta be consistent for months/years. It doesn’t have to be work or climbing, it could be becoming a regular at a bar, restaurant, or coffee shop, it could be a weekly pottery or knitting class. Just gotta get out of the house *at the same time every week* and be friendly. Be open to convos with strangers but don’t force it or do so *trying* to make friends, because the fact that it takes time will be discouraging
Yes! Not only are you in the same close contact daily, you also have shared experiences, shared traumas (school is traumatic), similar age/life experiences.
I've made all my adult friends through hobbies. It sort of recreates the same experience as school. We're at the same place frequently and we have a shared interest/experience. I like physical hobbies because it's a great way to start a convo by asking for tips, complimenting someone's form/ability, asking about clothing, equipment or material. Small talk your way into bigger conversations, then ask them noncommittal things like smoothies or coffee. I do aerial silks and it's always easy to ask if someone wants to grab a smoothie bowl after.

Ariana: No Tears Left To Cry I think is definitely one of the best too (it’s personally not my favorite but I wouldn’t question anyone saying it’s the best song)
One good example is Born to Die, Video Games was the lead single and imo it's not only the best song on the album but one of Lana's best songs in general.

My national power station is on it’s last legs, it’s 40 years old and failing on us, and the government won’t invest in a 100% renewable one so now we have pretty routine power cuts and the lights and shit start flickering

We only lost power for 10 minutes today but last time it was like an hour or two and the government is committed to building a new fossil fuel power station but no work has even started on it yet and I don’t see why we can’t go to fully renewable power when we are a small country and when we haven’t started work on building the replacement yet
I live right next to the power station too and the alarms going off all the time is starting to do my head in

Obviously I know that steaming has at this point taken ahold of the music industry. And despite some drawbacks, it’s been a great innovation for us consumers. However, it seems to me that streaming has also distorted some staple metrics of success, namely the Billboard charts.
I bring this up because of the narratives surrounding “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. The WSJ just printed a story saying it is bigger than Let it Go, and perhaps may be Disney’s biggest musical hit since the Lion King. It is an amazing song from a great movie, don’t get me wrong, but from my perspective, its nowhere near as big as Let it Go was.
Let it Go was everywhere. You couldn’t escape from it. Kids, parents, and grandparents were singing it. Literally every song I heard during that era was either Let it Go or Happy (shudder). It was a blockbuster. And it didn’t seem like just a corporate vehicle, people actually liked the song. It was a cultural moment not just for Disney, but also the music industry. Bruno, by comparison, just doesn’t seem to have that level of interest.
Most outlets are using Bruno’s chart position to justify their ranking, it has indeed surpassed Let it Go’s peak. But I feel like it’s inaccurate to compare music’s chart performance from Frozen’s era (where streaming was just really beginning) to now. If Let it Go were released in the streaming era, I feel like it would’ve been even bigger than it was. Conversely, if Bruno were released during the radio/sales era, I don’t think it would be as big (just my opinion!).
I think it is more glaring for album sales/Billboard 200. While the Hot 100 could always be manipulated to an extent by radio play, the Billboard 200 was usually an accurate assessment of public interest for a specific album.
A recent example is Adele’s 30. I saw too many blogs and even some publications directly compare 30’s debut to that of 25. On paper, Adele went from debuting with 3.4 million to “just” around 850K. One blog in particular compared this era to that of Katy’s Witness, maybe signaling a decline in interest for Adele.
As a marketer, there were visible signs that Katy was on the decline after Prism. Her Olympic promo single didn’t really do well , nor did Chained to the Rhythm (well, for Katy’s standards at that time). She also made major changes to her personal brand that probably affected her sales.
Meanwhile, Easy on Me broke records and her concerts are selling out in seconds. Many of the publications doing these comparisons fail to acknowledge the seismic shift that streaming has done to the Billboard charts. 25 wasn’t available for streaming upon release, 30 was. And much of Adele’s fanbase skews older, and may only listen to the album a few times. It’s my understanding that if a singular person listens to an album in full on Spotify or Apple Music only once, that doesn’t count as an equivalent sale, or even half a sale. If you wanted to listen to 25 once, you had to buy the album, which counts as a sale.
For albums released in the sales era, a 1M debut meant that roughly 1M people were interested enough to buy the album, with a negligible account for repeat purchasers. But now, it seems an album that debuts with 500K might have attracted significantly less or significantly more unique individual listeners, depending on fan behavior or the albums makeup. It’s my understanding (though I might be wrong) that an album with 10 tracks is at a sales disadvantage to an album with 20. Please correct me if I’m wrong!
I think people mistakenly equate the Billboard charts to the Box Office for film. Spider Man, for example, smashed records at the box office because people went to the theater to watch the film. It wasn’t available for streaming, so its debut numbers were an accurate assessment of the publics interest.
That no longer seems to be the case for Billboard. When artists can inflate their numbers by releasing 25+ track albums or by fans having streaming parties, it’s no longer representative of true public interest, in my opinion. How many singles over the last few years have debuted at #1 only to plummet the following week.
In my opinion, it’s time we updated how we measure commercial success or public interest in the music industry.
Yeah, the way chart metrics work I'm just like "lol okay". Bruno vs Let It Go is a great example: One is a cultural phenomenon and the other is... not really. Also, there's the whole "Blinding Lights is the biggest song EVER" and it's like, no, it hits the correct variables in a volatile algorithm correctly; it is doing extremely well, yes, but it is not the biggest song ever.
I do think it's really hard to come up with a formula that like, accurately reflects the diverse ways people approach music consumption in this era. But I'm also more and more convinced that what we have isn't working, or at least is much less accurate than it used to be.
Another thing I saw someone point out this past week is that Easy On Me has way more on radio play than on sales/streams. Which definitely feels unfair to the charts. What is on the radio isn’t necessarily what people would choose to listen to independently the same way you would download a song.
I don’t have the answers to how to fix the chart. I personally think the UK chart is fine quite fairly, even if people disagree with the ACR rule.
Anyone here seen hacksaw ridge? I saw it recommended on my Hulu so gave it a watch and once I got halfway through I decided to look up what the reception of the movie was because I was not enjoying it, and lo and behold it’s got raving reviews and even got nominated for several awards?? It’s so unbelievably cheesy and melodramatic, I’m trynna figure out what everyone else is seeing that I’m not. Also the acting was weird, even Andrew Garfield was doing too much.
I don't remember much from it, but I vaguely recall finding the first half to be godawful for the exact reasons you mentioned, and then it got better past the halfway point (mostly because iirc, the second hour was largely just extended war/combat scenes that are pretty well executed). I agree that Garfield was doing WAY too much, though, he definitely shouldn't have been Oscar-nominated for that. He was much better that very same year in Scorsese's Silence, which was all around a much, much better film as well. Just another instance of the right actor being nominated in the right year, but for the wrong film.

I think Britney deserves our support and stuff. She has been through a lot. However, just because of that doesn’t mean that she should never be criticized for anything especially if we would do the same to another pop star said something similar to her wanting to hit her at the time 12 year old sister. She just like anyone else has flaws and I don’t think it’s gaslighting to discuss that. I feel for Britney and I think that she is just publicly processing a lot of trauma and so while I do think it’s important to give her grace (which I think most of us will) we can still critique her.
There have been multiple people commenting on how her access to social media should be taken away, how she is mentally unstable and seems to be going over the edge. This woman has been a prisoner in her own home for 13yrs. She was worked like a slave for 13yrs. She had no rights over her own body for 13yrs. If she wants to fucking go off on the people that have helped silence her for THE LAST 13 YEARS then she has every fucking right to do so and everyone else needs to shut the fuck up and sit themselves down.
And I am not denying that there haven’t been some people who have probably said inappropriate things like that. But I just don’t see an issue with some critiquing that one part of her statement. Britney should be able to respond especially because JLS did a book tour and is going on to a podcast to read texts and shit. But again most of the people I’ve seen were more just saying they felt the hitting part was too much but that’s the most I saw.
I feel awful for Britney and I think she is dealing with trauma. She deserves graces and something 2007 should never happen. However, I think that criticism as long as it isn’t horribly harsh or calling for conservatorship to be reinstated is okay.

I pretty much only listened to Amy Winehouse the last two weeks.I've got a bit too much time at my hand now and have been trying to use it for exploring new music. I knew a total of two songs by Amy Winehouse before,so listening to her whole discography was quite fascinating. Back to Black is such a depressing album but indisputably brilliant. It's gets so much more distressing when you read about the reasons that led to making of the album. But you know she is singing from her bones and the lyrics are so poignant. Valerie and Love Is A Losing are absolute classics and easily my favourites besides 'Back to Black' and Rehab which I already knew and love. Frank is a relatively less darker album and therefore easier to listen to in that sense .' Take The Box' has to be my favourite. Overall listening to new songs and reading about the artists is a very exciting and engrossing process. Learning about the backstories behind the songs really enhances your listening experience.

Can someone tell people that saying "DAE thinks Britney is not ok?" is not the hot, enlightened take they think it is? I'm being rude which I really don't like but I am really tired. And this is not to anyone in specific. It's also pisses me off when people start to go off about her erratic captions and social media use. The last time she had permission to use social media freely like all of us, smartphones weren't even a thing yet. Facebook wasn't even a thing yet. We all had our cringe phases online and the time to watch social media culture grow in front of our eyes and understand how to behave in it (and a LOT of people still don't know)... she didn't have that chance.

Can anyone share what it felt like to have their wisdom coming in? My mouth, specifically my lower jaw has been experiencing pain for about a week now. It started at the tail end of having COVID but now that I'm over COVID it's only gotten worse. I thought it was just a COVID thing maybe but my god my bottom left jaw feels so fucked now and I feel a *pressure* in it and it's all I can think about. My ability to open my jaw has lessened. I don't have any insurance at all so I'm like ughhhhhh to even get it checked out and I don't even want to think about the price of getting a tooth taken out if that's what's needed.
i had my jaw feel pressure like you said & i heard creaking. it was hard to chew as well. i had insurance & it didn't cover that procedure. it cost 1K. thankfully when my grandma was alive she helped me pay it off with her credit. you must pay a lot of insurance money to cover it. most dentist procedures are out of pocket. be prepared to spend money. my dentist office offers payment plans. they did a payment plan for my braces after my wisdom teeth procedure.
I was in this position last year, I hope I’m remembering it correctly - once my wisdom teeth started to come in, it was a bit hard for me to eat and use my jaw. On one side of my mouth specifically where the tooth was definitely poking out, I couldn’t put any pressure there or it would hurt. I don’t really recall too much other than this, afaik my wisdom teeth just came in super quickly and then it started to hurt like I described, nothing bad happened before. I also got my wisdom teeth removed almost a year ago from now (last February 5). I’d recommend going to a consultation for a doctor to look at your teeth, they’ll tell you how to proceed (some people are lucky and don’t need to take them out, but if you do it’s much easier to get it done earlier rather than later, or when you’re older). If you have to get them removed later this year, don’t worry too much about it. My anxiety leading up to my surgery was worse than the surgery itself, I don’t even remember going to sleep for it. I was able to (slowly and carefully) eat chicken tenders just under 2 weeks post surgery, and after a month I felt much better.

I know in your original post you said you were worried about the cost of getting them removed but I really do think you should look into doing so, especially because it if hurts now it’ll just keep getting worse and worse, not to mention potentially ruin your other teeth as well. I get cavities pretty easily as well, I understand that struggle lol. At my consultation, they weighted me and based my dose of general anesthesia for the surgery on that. The worst thing about it at the surgery was that they pricked the needle right into my hand, and once I woke up I was confused about where I was for a second. I instinctively moved my hand which hurt momentarily because the needle was still in it lol. But other than that I would really recommend taking anesthesia and being asleep for the surgery, it made it super easy and quick. Okay, I think mine are in/ coming in and while it’s hurts a little it hasn’t been bad however I did notice I would feel like a pulsating pain and also noted I kept feeling in my mouth to see what was wrong and bam it was my wisdom teeth.
I didn’t get headaches but I felt like I needed to bite on something, I had pressure and general discomfort in my jaw (at first I assumed I was grinding my teeth again), and sometimes I’d get pain when I ate/drank hot and cold stuff. My gums were sensitive too.
I have all of those!!!! YES feeling the need to bite on something is exactly what I have but didn't know how to put into words. Like I just keep chomping nothing because I feels like there's something for me to chomp. It's odd. Okay now I'm scared they are my wisdom teeth making an appearance uh oh.

A 2 hour lecture is a lot! Especially on Zoom when you can’t really interact with anybody and the material isn’t very engaging. What helped me *a lot* is ticking every 15 minutes. Eight 15-minute chunks felt a lot more manageable than a huge 2-hour block
It’s interesting, I actually tend to greatly prefer online classes over in person classes, so normally I would really enjoy this schedule. I’m really thankful I have it. Last quarter though I have classes twice a week, with one day 4 hours straight of lectures, and I guess that really took a toll on my energy levels for school because I still feel exhausted from it

Not sure how old you are, or if you have a decent night scene where you live. But I’ve made tons of friends by just exploring dive bars around town and just being open for conversation.
I met a couple of my friends from concerts. Also, like what everyone else said, hobbies are a great way to make friends. I made a couple from taking cooking classes at a local center.
The reason it’s so easy to make friends in school is because you’re forced to be in the same place every day so you are in close contact over and over again. Leverage that so for example, I became friendly with a coworker, and we just stayed coworkers that chatted about work stuff, but over a 1+ year period we kept clicking and become the coworkers that send memes all day back and forth, eventually he invited me out and I met his friends and even my now gf and that whole friend group through him. Another good thing is to pick a hobby and do it regularly. I go rock climbing and go 2-3x a week. I’ve made a couple ancillary friends from going to the same gym for years that I know and chat with. If I was desperate for friends I would probably ask to come along next time they were gonna climb outside, and from there who knows. I’ve also made a few friends from tinder dates that went fine, but there was something missing but we had similar interests. I think the key is, it takes time, you gotta be consistent for months/years. It doesn’t have to be work or climbing, it could be becoming a regular at a bar, restaurant, or coffee shop, it could be a weekly pottery or knitting class. Just gotta get out of the house *at the same time every week* and be friendly. Be open to convos with strangers but don’t force it or do so *trying* to make friends, because the fact that it takes time will be discouraging
Yes! Not only are you in the same close contact daily, you also have shared experiences, shared traumas (school is traumatic), similar age/life experiences. I've made all my adult friends through hobbies. It sort of recreates the same experience as school. We're at the same place frequently and we have a shared interest/experience. I like physical hobbies because it's a great way to start a convo by asking for tips, complimenting someone's form/ability, asking about clothing, equipment or material. Small talk your way into bigger conversations, then ask them noncommittal things like smoothies or coffee. I do aerial silks and it's always easy to ask if someone wants to grab a smoothie bowl after.

My national power station is on it’s last legs, it’s 40 years old and failing on us, and the government won’t invest in a 100% renewable one so now we have pretty routine power cuts and the lights and shit start flickering It’s just done it again, like clockwork. I love it here 🥰

Halfway through Utada Hikaru's new album and it's an absolute, undeniable & stellar masterpiece, like WTF? Let me preface this by saying I’m largely ignorant of the Billboard streaming rules so please bear with me if anything I say is inaccurate. And feel free to correct me below! Obviously I know that steaming has at this point taken ahold of the music industry. And despite some drawbacks, it’s been a great innovation for us consumers. However, it seems to me that streaming has also distorted some staple metrics of success, namely the Billboard charts. I bring this up because of the narratives surrounding “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. The WSJ just printed a story saying it is bigger than Let it Go, and perhaps may be Disney’s biggest musical hit since the Lion King. It is an amazing song from a great movie, don’t get me wrong, but from my perspective, its nowhere near as big as Let it Go was. Let it Go was everywhere. You couldn’t escape from it. Kids, parents, and grandparents were singing it. Literally every song I heard during that era was either Let it Go or Happy (shudder). It was a blockbuster. And it didn’t seem like just a corporate vehicle, people actually liked the song. It was a cultural moment not just for Disney, but also the music industry. Bruno, by comparison, just doesn’t seem to have that level of interest. Most outlets are using Bruno’s chart position to justify their ranking, it has indeed surpassed Let it Go’s peak. But I feel like it’s inaccurate to compare music’s chart performance from Frozen’s era (where streaming was just really beginning) to now. If Let it Go were released in the streaming era, I feel like it would’ve been even bigger than it was. Conversely, if Bruno were released during the radio/sales era, I don’t think it would be as big (just my opinion!). I think it is more glaring for album sales/Billboard 200. While the Hot 100 could always be manipulated to an extent by radio play, the Billboard 200 was usually an accurate assessment of public interest for a specific album. A recent example is Adele’s 30. I saw too many blogs and even some publications directly compare 30’s debut to that of 25. On paper, Adele went from debuting with 3.4 million to “just” around 850K. One blog in particular compared this era to that of Katy’s Witness, maybe signaling a decline in interest for Adele. As a marketer, there were visible signs that Katy was on the decline after Prism. Her Olympic promo single didn’t really do well , nor did Chained to the Rhythm (well, for Katy’s standards at that time). She also made major changes to her personal brand that probably affected her sales. Meanwhile, Easy on Me broke records and her concerts are selling out in seconds. Many of the publications doing these comparisons fail to acknowledge the seismic shift that streaming has done to the Billboard charts. 25 wasn’t available for streaming upon release, 30 was. And much of Adele’s fanbase skews older, and may only listen to the album a few times. It’s my understanding that if a singular person listens to an album in full on Spotify or Apple Music only once, that doesn’t count as an equivalent sale, or even half a sale. If you wanted to listen to 25 once, you had to buy the album, which counts as a sale. For albums released in the sales era, a 1M debut meant that roughly 1M people were interested enough to buy the album, with a negligible account for repeat purchasers. But now, it seems an album that debuts with 500K might have attracted significantly less or significantly more unique individual listeners, depending on fan behavior or the albums makeup. It’s my understanding (though I might be wrong) that an album with 10 tracks is at a sales disadvantage to an album with 20. Please correct me if I’m wrong! I think people mistakenly equate the Billboard charts to the Box Office for film. Spider Man, for example, smashed records at the box office because people went to the theater to watch the film. It wasn’t available for streaming, so its debut numbers were an accurate assessment of the publics interest. That no longer seems to be the case for Billboard. When artists can inflate their numbers by releasing 25+ track albums or by fans having streaming parties, it’s no longer representative of true public interest, in my opinion. How many singles over the last few years have debuted at #1 only to plummet the following week. In my opinion, it’s time we updated how we measure commercial success or public interest in the music industry.
Yeah, the way chart metrics work I'm just like "lol okay". Bruno vs Let It Go is a great example: One is a cultural phenomenon and the other is... not really. Also, there's the whole "Blinding Lights is the biggest song EVER" and it's like, no, it hits the correct variables in a volatile algorithm correctly; it is doing extremely well, yes, but it is not the biggest song ever. I do think it's really hard to come up with a formula that like, accurately reflects the diverse ways people approach music consumption in this era. But I'm also more and more convinced that what we have isn't working, or at least is much less accurate than it used to be.
Another thing I saw someone point out this past week is that Easy On Me has way more on radio play than on sales/streams. Which definitely feels unfair to the charts. What is on the radio isn’t necessarily what people would choose to listen to independently the same way you would download a song. I don’t have the answers to how to fix the chart. I personally think the UK chart is fine quite fairly, even if people disagree with the ACR rule.
Anyone here seen hacksaw ridge? I saw it recommended on my Hulu so gave it a watch and once I got halfway through I decided to look up what the reception of the movie was because I was not enjoying it, and lo and behold it’s got raving reviews and even got nominated for several awards?? It’s so unbelievably cheesy and melodramatic, I’m trynna figure out what everyone else is seeing that I’m not. Also the acting was weird, even Andrew Garfield was doing too much.
I don't remember much from it, but I vaguely recall finding the first half to be godawful for the exact reasons you mentioned, and then it got better past the halfway point (mostly because iirc, the second hour was largely just extended war/combat scenes that are pretty well executed). I agree that Garfield was doing WAY too much, though, he definitely shouldn't have been Oscar-nominated for that. He was much better that very same year in Scorsese's Silence, which was all around a much, much better film as well. Just another instance of the right actor being nominated in the right year, but for the wrong film.

I think Britney deserves our support and stuff. She has been through a lot. However, just because of that doesn’t mean that she should never be criticized for anything especially if we would do the same to another pop star said something similar to her wanting to hit her at the time 12 year old sister. She just like anyone else has flaws and I don’t think it’s gaslighting to discuss that. I feel for Britney and I think that she is just publicly processing a lot of trauma and so while I do think it’s important to give her grace (which I think most of us will) we can still critique her.
There have been multiple people commenting on how her access to social media should be taken away, how she is mentally unstable and seems to be going over the edge. This woman has been a prisoner in her own home for 13yrs. She was worked like a slave for 13yrs. She had no rights over her own body for 13yrs. If she wants to fucking go off on the people that have helped silence her for THE LAST 13 YEARS then she has every fucking right to do so and everyone else needs to shut the fuck up and sit themselves down.
And I am not denying that there haven’t been some people who have probably said inappropriate things like that. But I just don’t see an issue with some critiquing that one part of her statement. Britney should be able to respond especially because JLS did a book tour and is going on to a podcast to read texts and shit. But again most of the people I’ve seen were more just saying they felt the hitting part was too much but that’s the most I saw. I feel awful for Britney and I think she is dealing with trauma. She deserves graces and something 2007 should never happen. However, I think that criticism as long as it isn’t horribly harsh or calling for conservatorship to be reinstated is okay.

successfully made it home from my camping trip last night without getting eaten by any alligators all weekend!
