That was started with Smirnoff Ice but same thing. Yes. Best one was when a group of us were getting lunch and my Buddy ordered a hot dog. I asked the server to put a Smirnoff Ice in place of the hot dog.
When the server brought our food he almost shit himself.
Chugging smirnoff is not a pleasant experience. I've found that all of those types of drinks are for sipping.
They're expensive per unit alcohol so if your goal is to get drunk, find something harder and cheaper
My flatmate did that on a trip. His friend got him back by leaving one floating in the hot tub - apparently it's even worse to chug when it's body temperature.
They also had someone leave the pub ten minutes early and put one on every street corner on the walk home.
Got a similar one in during a college trip to New Orleans. My friend was mega hungover from sugary drinks the night before and was so nauseous he had to go back to our hostel in the middle of lunch. We took his food to go and left a little present in the box for when he was feeling well enough to eat again.
A co-worker and I found creative ways to get each other over the course of a year or so. Then, about four years later when I was working at a different bar, I got him hook line and sinker.
Personally, I preferred a Bacardi Breezer for my chugging purposes.
u/tehweave
Thatâs disappointing. I havenât had one for 5+ years and would always get asked, âReally?â whenever I ordered one just to chug, at a bar I used to go to. I imagine theyâre not in Canada, either.
In the early days of COVID quarantine it was fairly popular to "wine ninja" your friends, which consisted of simply leaving a gift bag with some bottles of wine in them at the intended recipients front door. It took about a week before people started Ice ninja-ing people. My mother, who is 63 years old, got Ice ninja'd on 3 occasions, and respected the rules every time.
Sidewalk slam is when you drink a 40 down to about the label and refill it with four Loko, Joose, etc... Though I wouldn't be surprised if the definition varies regionally...

Back in ancient times girls didn't drink beer. But these had too much sugar for college girls to drink 4 at a party.
Smirnoff ice came along with better flavors.
I drank it in the 90s. It was pretty good ice cold, but if it warmed up a few degrees it got gross quick. It had this really off putting chemical taste to it. And I say this as someone whoâll drink damn near anything.
when I was like 12 I went with my friend over to his cousin's house, whom I guess was of legal drinking age? He still lived with my friends aunt/uncle though. The cousin wasn't actually there but we hung out in his room and the walls were absolutely plastered with dozens of Zima 6 pack holders. Sadly the mini fridge in there was dry or else I totally would have tried some.
I remember convincing my older friend to buy this for us back in the mid 90s because of all of the marketing. We tried it and couldn't even finish, it was pretty bad. I don't think I have tried another one since.
Me too! I don't understand all the hate for Zima! A couple years back they brought it back and I bought it every time I saw it. I wished they would bring it back again!
Sometimes I think I am the only person that liked them in the 90s! To be fair, I also like peach schnapps and Long Island Iced Teas, so I may just have been gross. Iâm surprised they are not more popular now in light of how popular hard seltzers are.
It was the first alcoholic drink I ever tried. 14 at work and the super dated us to try em when we found em cleaning a college dorm. Warm, nasty, and we were all hella lit. Thinking back that super should be in jail but it was a fun ass day at work after.
I think it specifically catered to people who wouldnât consider drinking beer but still needed something that fit in at a college party. Expanded the drinking pool.
Exactly. I remember getting $1 12oz beers at the bar we went to, but one friend hated beer and had to pay $4 for 8oz mixed drinks. These things were a buck also, so it saved her money.
I remember the year it was introduced. It was definitely not "made to mix" at that time but I found it undrinkable, as did a lot of my fellow college students. One of the bartenders came up with the idea of pouring an ounce out and replacing it with a raspberry syrup he had lying around the bar, and that was actually pretty good.
"Now you kids with your loud music, and your Dan Fogleberg, your Zima, hula hoops and pac-man video games, don't you see? People today have attention spans that can only be measured in nanoseconds!"
Mad Dog 20/20 Banana Red was the shit. Do they make that anymore? Kids now have missed out on so much great shit. They still make Natural Light tho. Wonder if they still make Nattie Ice? Wooo. Many great stories begin with a case of those bastards.
Yup, youngsters in here not having a clue how sparse the alcohol scene was in the 90s. You basically had all the macrobrews, Heineken/Guiness/Corona (but rarely 2 and never more than 2 available at a place), wine coolers, wine, abs hard liquor. This was completely new and different. It wasnât *good*, but was often the least-bad option.
Now the lamest podunk corner store has two dozen microbrews, hard cider, and several hard seltzers available, and anywhere worth going has a hundred-some different options. The only reason they brought Zima back was for nostalgia.
They were $2 a bottle at Zuma Beach night club in downtown Orlando back in the late 90s. Cheap way to get completely smashed. The hangovers though. Dear god the hangovers.
Zima was pretty good for the time. It wasn't that popular which is why it was discontinued. The revivals of Zima I've taste are much worse than the original, it was basically Mike's hard lemonade if it was a 7-up.
2004, it was my first time drinking alcohol. 14 year old me hanging out of my friend's bedroom window throwing up the 4 Zima I drank trying not to wake up their parents. Never touched the stuff again.
Hard seltzers are a great idea (when itâs hot you donât always want sugar), Iâm just sad that White Claw and Truly took over the market. Theyâre probably the worst two Iâve tried
I drank with youthful delight. I even left offerings at a giant Zima bottle billboard in Pittsburgh one night. It was magical. Now that I'm old, malt liquor gives me heartburn. Original Zima was the best!!!
I used to clean pools with a dude who drank a case of these a day. He ended up sobering up, but it was tough to watch. Iâll never forget that big ass blue plastic cup..

Itâs basically White Claw with added sugar. Throw a Jolly Rancher in there, get on one knee, and chug it.
Oh dear God I remember that. Icing?
As someone who lives in the bachelorette capital of the country and works in a liquor store, I can assure you it absolutely still goes on, A LOT.
Must be Nashville
You know it!
That was started with Smirnoff Ice but same thing. Yes. Best one was when a group of us were getting lunch and my Buddy ordered a hot dog. I asked the server to put a Smirnoff Ice in place of the hot dog. When the server brought our food he almost shit himself.
My most creative ice was to put one in the tank of the toilet and unhook the chain from the handle.
My twin brother did that to me, I wasn't even mad lol, it was clever
can someone explain this trend? i obviously missedâŚ
You lead someone to finding a Smirnoff ice and when they do they have to chug it right then and there while one one knee
oh lol. thatâs actually funny af.
It was a trend around 2007-2010 or so
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.
That explains so much. I was in a bar once back around that time and I saw this happen to my friend. I was so confused.
Yeah, what? Why don't my friends "ice" me? I want free alcohol.
Chugging smirnoff is not a pleasant experience. I've found that all of those types of drinks are for sipping. They're expensive per unit alcohol so if your goal is to get drunk, find something harder and cheaper
They're also hangover-sweet.
It's the cold that makes it brutal to chug.
The carbonation doesn't help either
That said, if your goal is to get diabetesâŚ
I could easily chug a Smirnoff Ice. White Claw or current seltzers, not so much, but in my 20s Smirnoff Ice was my drink of choice
I got iced during Covid. A friend just left them on our deck, and then ding-dong dashed.
My flatmate did that on a trip. His friend got him back by leaving one floating in the hot tub - apparently it's even worse to chug when it's body temperature. They also had someone leave the pub ten minutes early and put one on every street corner on the walk home.
Best one I got was my friend ran out to pick up the pizza we ordered and stashed 2 bottles in the pizza box. Got me and my ex with that.
Personally, I preferred a Bacardi Breezer for my chugging purposes. u/tehweave
I love Bacardi breezers and I'm constantly disappointed that they are no longer sold in the US :( the watermelon ones were my favorite
Thatâs disappointing. I havenât had one for 5+ years and would always get asked, âReally?â whenever I ordered one just to chug, at a bar I used to go to. I imagine theyâre not in Canada, either.
To fizzy, Orange Reef with a straw bent over the tops where its at!
In the early days of COVID quarantine it was fairly popular to "wine ninja" your friends, which consisted of simply leaving a gift bag with some bottles of wine in them at the intended recipients front door. Is a hot dog a mixed drink or something, because Iâm not sure how exactly you put a drink in a hotdog bun? Please help lol
I think he means instead of the âdogâ. So quite literally a Bottle of Smirnoff in a bun.
It's a bottle. Put bottle in bun sideways. Done.
It's a drinking game pretty much. If you find the smirnoff or Mike's or sea breeze, you have to chug it.
All my buddies used to do a Christmas thing and 99% of the time you opened your gift and it was you getting iced.
I miss getting iced
take a swig, then refill zima with vodka.
I did this with 4lokos apparently they were called sidewalk slammers
Og 4loko? Or the new not as crazy formula? If the former, how are you still alive?
I once drank three of the OG 4 Lokos. Then I laid in my bed drunk as hell with my heart racing and was POSITIVE I was going to die...
You probably did, and were just a fever dream your consciousness got stuck in.
Sidewalk slam is when you drink a 40 down to about the label and refill it with four Loko, Joose, etc... Though I wouldn't be surprised if the definition varies regionally...
This and Smirnoff Ice made good mixers for Vodka.
We used Skittles. They were great in a Zima.
White claw is like drinking television static while someone screams the name of a fruit from another room
Donât you use that Lacroix joke on white claw. I can actually taste a fruit in white claw
I hate Lacroix but MAN white claw is tasty. I can't really explain why
Same!! Completely agree
Lacroix tastes like two people describing a fruit that neither of them have ever tried.
Thatâs a very accurate description of White Claw. Nice work
Wasnât his work.

90's highschool girls don't like Bud Light. They like sugar.
Just the 90's?
My friends and I would drink a little then put fun dip in it.
We used to put pixie sticks in them. So gross to think about now.
1. Itâs like a hard 7-up. Itâs really not that bad 2. People didnât really drink it - thatâs why it went away
That's how exactly I remembered it and with the recent return, it didn't disappoint. I thought it was so refreshing. The one OP has is different.
I loved it. Bought it by the case when it came back. Perfect for summer chuggin'.
Got some, too. If I knew it was a temporary supply I would have stocked up.
Back in ancient times girls didn't drink beer. But these had too much sugar for college girls to drink 4 at a party. Smirnoff ice came along with better flavors.
Isnât it made to make cocktails? Isnât that what âMade to Mixâ means?
It was the 90s, so we mixed it with cocaine.
This man cocaines.
Ahh the 90s... when the mullets were ripe and dad shorts road high. Love me some 90s.
Exactly. It's novelty was that it was see-through, then the novelty wore off.
Yep. We liked clear shit in the 90s for no real reason.
Crystal Pepsi has entered the chat.
Zima wasnât highfalutinâ like wine coolers. Ah, Bartles & JaymesâŚ
I drank it in the 90s. It was pretty good ice cold, but if it warmed up a few degrees it got gross quick. It had this really off putting chemical taste to it. And I say this as someone whoâll drink damn near anything.

We drank this shit by the gallon when we were 17 lol.
The 90âs were wild man. Wild. Thatâs why.
The phrase youâre looking is, âtotally extremeâ
Oh. My. God. Itâs like I forgot that phrase on purpose. Would have also accepted âtoo the extreme!â

It was radical
I remember convincing my older friend to buy this for us back in the mid 90s because of all of the marketing. We tried it and couldn't even finish, it was pretty bad. I don't think I have tried another one since.
In our defense, we were also really high.
This is the kind of logical answer I was looking for
Still are. But were then, too.
RIP Mitch.
I would love a Zima right now.
Me too! I don't understand all the hate for Zima! A couple years back they brought it back and I bought it every time I saw it. I wished they would bring it back again!
Never understood it either. If you donât like it ( I suspect many detractors have never tried it.) donât drink it. Why the hate?
Zima Gold, not so much. But a regular Zima, sure.
You are not alone. There are dozens of us! DOZENS!!!
Sometimes I think I am the only person that liked them in the 90s! To be fair, I also like peach schnapps and Long Island Iced Teas, so I may just have been gross. Iâm surprised they are not more popular now in light of how popular hard seltzers are.

I use to get lit on zima when I was a kid
It was the first alcoholic drink I ever tried. 14 at work and the super dated us to try em when we found em cleaning a college dorm. Warm, nasty, and we were all hella lit. Thinking back that super should be in jail but it was a fun ass day at work after.
Only in the us drinking age is so high. I donât think people should be arrested for doing drugs. Itâs their choice.
AVOID THE PHILIPPINES!
Their ads really appealed to children. The Joe Camel of booze. Really hit home the ice cold, refreshing idea
Says made to mix on the bottle... so they mean mix with other liquids like soda or mix with other alcohols you know you're not supposed to mix? Lol
Made to get you drunk so anti-social people can mix in.
But that's any alcohol really lol What's so special about this one?
I think it specifically catered to people who wouldnât consider drinking beer but still needed something that fit in at a college party. Expanded the drinking pool.
Exactly. I remember getting $1 12oz beers at the bar we went to, but one friend hated beer and had to pay $4 for 8oz mixed drinks. These things were a buck also, so it saved her money.
I don't like beer or hard alcohol, I just smoke cannabis. Me and a few antisocials would be the ones smoking jays lol.
Right there with you buddy.

Boones farm!!! I miss back when I didnât drink
Bartles and James. FTW.

It was like booze soda.
We called it alco-pop!
"made to mix" basically meaning "yeah it isn't good"
Two words: Spring. Break. (In the 90âsâŚ)
They were $2 a bottle at Zuma Beach night club in downtown Orlando back in the late 90s. Cheap way to get completely smashed. The hangovers though. Dear god the hangovers.
Whiskey gave me less of a hangover than these, ugh, the headaches were brutal.
Way more sugar, thatâs why the hangover was worse lol
Um... Cuz alcohol?
I actually really love Zima. Much better than some of the drinks they keep churning out today imo.
Did you put Skittles in it?
Jolly ranchers!
Fuck, I forgot about that. I had a fraternity brother who did this all the time, I never understood why.
I think you need to listen to Ace of Base while drinking it to get the full effect.
It's beer for anyone who hates beer.
So it was the alcohol equivalent of Black Eyed Peas
Robert California?
Legit chortled.
I think Deke Shaw was the last person to actually enjoy Zima, and that's only because he came from a dystopian future.
As soon as I saw the post, I scoured the comments to find this

Zima was pretty good for the time. It wasn't that popular which is why it was discontinued. The revivals of Zima I've taste are much worse than the original, it was basically Mike's hard lemonade if it was a 7-up.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of ZIIIMAAAAAAAA
Ah Zima. Tastes like zit.

Zima blue
Because they were 90's high-school girls.
I feel that way about white claw
Hard seltzers are a great idea (when itâs hot you donât always want sugar), Iâm just sad that White Claw and Truly took over the market. Theyâre probably the worst two Iâve tried
A lot of drinks went clear at the time. It was and remains a bad idea.
ProTip: drop your favorite flavor Jolly Rancher in it đ
I bet that âmade to mixâ line has something to do with it. Who knows though đ¤ˇđťââď¸
I'm not gay but I like Zima.
âYo ho ho and a bottle of ZIMAâ
Drop a Jolly Rancher in it and youâll see.
Literally says right on the bottle âmade to mixâ
"MADE TO MIX"
Ya gotta add a jolly rancher or two
Cuz when I was 14 it beat the fuck out of natty ice
I drank with youthful delight. I even left offerings at a giant Zima bottle billboard in Pittsburgh one night. It was magical. Now that I'm old, malt liquor gives me heartburn. Original Zima was the best!!!
You won a bottle or lost a bet?
Supposed to drop a jolly rancher in it.
Itâs that or a Seagrams golden wine cooler. Its wet and itâs dry.
Sounds like someone won a way to get rid of their zima
I used to clean pools with a dude who drank a case of these a day. He ended up sobering up, but it was tough to watch. Iâll never forget that big ass blue plastic cup..
You should probably open it first before you judge that nasty stuff
