I made a biker style COVID-19 vaccination patch!
By - deadnoob
Now we know the Revenant from DOOM got his shot
Ahaha! Even the plot plus or minus is similar to the game of doom! Great patch, I would like to have the same one.
How does one "make" a patch? I love finding cool patches and have a modest collection, but never considered how they are made.
Take a my free award for being helpful.
What machine are you using? I have a brother se1900 and it's simply awful at embroidery. The tension is never right and always makes the patches all wonky
Are the other things you embroidery OK? Is it just patches that seems bad?
I can let you know the process I use to make patches if you are interested.
No. LOL. That machine also breaks needles so often it's insane. I know it's a tension problem but even on zero it's never happy. I since bought another machine for regular stitching. It's a Janome and it hums right along.
I also have Hatch software that I'm halfway through payments for. I'm just waiting to find a machine that doesn't butcher embroidery.
Have you cleaned the bobbin case? My machine tension got so out of whack at one point where even 0 wasn't working. Turned out I needed to clean the bobbin case. Since then it is much better. Still not perfect like out of the box, but it will at least stitch OK for the most part.
I've had to have it serviced several times for not working right. In fact, they just replaced a bunch of parts because I insisted on new ones to try to fix the issues it has. It didn't help at all though. I'm convinced the damn thing is a lemon.
Yea, I'd really love a professional grade machine. I feel like any minute mine could just die. It definitely makes a lot more noise than it used to.
This whole thread got me appreciating sewing like it was fixing a car.... also i want that badge sewn on my arm
Sewing machines are their own special breed of clockwork. Just getting a mechanical system to do all sorts of stitch types is mechanism wizardry.
I’m glad to hear that you found a way to appreciate sewing, /u/scrotumsweat
Have you taken it in to be serviced? I'm not familiar with that model, but breaking needles and having tension issues continually seem to indicate that something isn't right. More often than not, breaking needles is the result of poor needle selection for the material (e.g., using a 12/180 felling a seam on 12oz denim), but it could also be a timing issue, like the needle hitting the hook assembly. Have you tried different sizes and types of thread? Most of the shit you can get in retail stores is T27 spun polyester.
It's been serviced a few times and had new parts put on at my request. It didn't help. The needles are correct and the thread is Simthread. I was sewing patches on felt.
Have you contacted Brother? My own experience with Brother has been solely their commercial lines, and they've generally made solid stuff. I don't think that they would be marketing a crap machine to consumers; it seems more believable to me that either your particular machine is out of spec in some way, **or** there's some critical part of set-up that was done incorrectly, and isn't clear from the documentation.
It sounds like a very frustrating problem with an expensive machine.
Bernina makes a ton of really nice embroidery / sewing machines.. my wife has one and uses it all the time and rarely has any issues.
What do you use to digitize? I used a free plug for Inkscape and it work ok. But I refuse to pay the price of those other programs. They cost more than the damn machine.
I use Hatch. It is way too expensive, but I find it really is a lot better than the Inkscape plugin. That is part of the reason I'm trying to sell some patches - trying to make back the $1000 for the software....
You should consider making this a sticker as well. While the patch is cool, I don’t really put patches on anything. A sticker, however, could go on many things!
Yes, i need to figure out how to do stickers. I've tried doing printed stickers, but they aren't waterproof. I know a lot of people will put them on their cars so I don't feel good selling them. Still trying to figure that out.
Get a cricut/silhouette and do vinyl clings?
I actually just got a Silhouette last week to make inkjet printed stickers of my wife's artwork.
This patch could work as a vinyl cling (not printed) so I might try to make that.
I just purchased an HP latex printer. If you send me your file I will print you 25 stickers at no charge. I will even post them to you at no cost. I just want to learn the bumps in the process before I go live with paying customers. You will retain the rights to your design.
the opposite of /r/ChoosingBeggars here
You could have [stickermule.com](https://www.stickermule.com/unlock?ref_id=6484130701&utm_medium=link&utm_source=invite) print your stickers [**disclosure:** referral link, we both get $10 credit]. I've always been impressed with their quality, they ship fast, and the prices are pretty good.
What about enamel pin badges?
If you need to sell patches, shoot a link, I need to buy two Vaxxed patches to counteract my idiot father who wants to wear an "unfaccinated" golden star of david.... <_<
Yeah, when I click the link to see the comment with your Etsy link, the Reddit comment doesn’t show. Sounds like it got removed :(
How can we buy that kick ass patch?
Oh and you are super awesome for being so helpful and informative 🤘🏽
The 2 leading programs are Wings XP (though not sure it still gets updates) and Wilcom (Corel), the latter being the "industry standard".
Try not to have a heart attack when you look up how much the software costs. I think my wife paid at least $5000 for Wilcom along with a bunch of plugin software for it. There may be more cost effective options, but Wilcom is certainly the "Photoshop" of the digitizing world.
Around 20 (!) years ago I was one of the many people trading design software online. There were the usual “no leeches” rules in all the groups, but by far the most hardcore were the embroidery people. (I don’t think many people thought to look in those subs.) I eventually ended up with a font they were looking for so I was granted entry. Seriously, the embroidery people had every single font or piece of software you could ever want. I didn’t realize how expensive this stuff was so now it makes sense.
Contract Embroidery Shop owner here... we run 3 8 head machines all day long.
The best way to digitize is to send your file to a digitizing service! Costs about $10 and some of them can get it back to you in an hour. Explain to them very specifically what you need.... size, specs, colors, substrate. Great embroidery starts with great digitizing! I do use Wilcom for adjusting and type setting, file conversion and storage. But I never do my own digitizing.
What machine do you use?
Do you do patch embroidery for a business? I may need some made
Piggybacking your comment. I need patched for my restaurant!
How much to have you make one for me? I'll gladly put that on my jacket
Is it possible to create the design and send it to someone who has the machine? Are there companies that do that?
You might be able to find someone that will in there. Some etsy shops probably would too.
But you probably can't blame your machinist if your digitizing is flawed.
Hand-embroidered patches are a thing, but machine embroidery is how this was made. There are commercial grade embroidery machines and hobbiest machines. Both require software to tell the machines how to stitch the design. It's very similar to how an ink jet printer works...you have complete control over the placement of the needle and thread, just like photoshop would allow you to print pixels in a certain order.
Do they use G-code? Genuinely curious. I've run CNC machines for years, and I was surprised to find out that my 3d printer uses G-code as do some vinyl cutters.
No, it's nothing like CAD or 3D modeling. It's closest to Adobe Illustrator, using vector paths to place stitches. Like all software, there are efficient and inefficient products. What I use is cheap and kinda crap while others are very easy to use and produce better output
Oh no, I meant the machine itself not the CAD software. G-code is what various automated machines use as instructions. You make a design in the program you are using, be it 2d or 3d, and the program converts it into instructions that the machine can read.
Yeah, I think we're thinking the same thing 😅 I only know of g-code from using flatbed CNC machines. I didn't remember if it was output from the software (I was using fusion and rhino). If g-code is used with the embroidery machine I've never noticed, but that makes sense
[Ink/Stitch](https://inkstitch.org/) is one way to make your own using Inkscape. I would like to see their original design and know what kind of printer they are working with.
Where can I order one?
Yeah, I want one! Where's your Etsy page? You found an untapped market.
OP responded to another comment, search “patchnotes patches” on Etsy. This and the Diamond hands design made me lol
As of right now, I don't see this (most excellent) patch on your etsy site. I'd like to buy one.
If you don't have access to an embroidery machine;
I hand embroidered a patch over lockdown that turned out super nice. Came out great. Otherwise I sometimes cut graphics off of tees, glue a stiff backing (fusing) on it and use my domestic machine's zigzag setting to do the border stitch.
There are many [online patch-making services](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=embroidered+patches+made&t=brave&ia=web). Send em your design (and money,) they send you patches.
Ah I see your mistake, you think I have money. What I do have is old band shirts, embroidery equipment and no respect for my own time.
Ah ha! Now my problem is that I have no idea what "embroidery equipment" is. Sticks? Is it something to do with sticks?
Haha hoops, thread and needles!
They aren't hard, you can find a plethora of businesses that will do a custom patch for you online. Min order is typically around 25, price goes down as quantity goes up.
My usual process is to mock it up in GIMP and PowerPoint, save that as an image, then finalize the design on say aviatorgear or somewhere (depending on sales).
Things to look for: pricing by thread color (if they don't give you at least 5 colors to start you probably don't want to use them), backing types (velcro, iron on, etc), full embroidered vs 30%,40%50% (a full embroidered patch usually looks a lot cooler in my opinion).
I usually make ones for my ongoing projects, get coworkers to buy in at cost, then get the order placed,
For those that have asked - I have them for sale on my Etsy shop! Looks like I'm only allowed to post one link to the shop so I will do it here:
COD emblems in a nutshell
I'm unsure the skull is a wise choice lol
A syringe on top of the skull (as a negative) it would be a better representation.
Yeah I'm torn on this one. Very cool design and would blend in well in a metal community also. But the message is not universally clear.
If you're concerned people will get the wrong idea about vaccines because of this patch, I have some unfortunate news...
Seriously. It's fun and, at worst, ironic.
Sometimes I wonder if people think their bumper stickers are out there changing people's lives, lol.
Thought of a bumper sticker that i saw part of the other day. I don't remember what it said but the owners had spent some time trying to get it off and it was funny sexual stuff.
Maybe they're the skulls of our enemies.
Is that how it comes accross? It doesn't say "Yeah, we killed him, but trust us, this guy was horrid"
[Well, no, but...](https://youtu.be/hn1VxaMEjRU)
Expected Mitchell and Webb, was not disappointed.
Have you ever thought that maybe we are the baddies?
I'd prefer a rat's anus.
She did say “biker style”.
"I got vaxxed because I love my mom"
I see a skull that has come back to life, seems on point to me.
It was vaccinated right into the bone, it's even more metal.
I suppose the image of a healthy smiling face just doesn't have the same impact. Hey look at me! I'm gonna DIE in sixty five years!
Octane! The real ones know
Faster. FASTER. *FASTER*
I can see all of you in the rear view mirror!

This is fucking hilarious, I love it
Motherfuck that sub is amazing
HELL YEAH MF'ER!!
But what's the difference between bombass and badass?
This is awesome.. Do you sell patches or have an online shop? I love patches, my dad rode a Goldwing and died in December of Covid-19. For some reason, I think a patch would make a neat addition to the growing shrine I've built around his little memorial urn I got with his ashes. I just got pictures of his name painted on a sea shell in New Jersey, along with sand from the beach it's on, and a shell from there (we are in Minnesota). I used to work at Joann Fabrics and the lady I bought my sewing machine from there at the Viking Sewing center was always doing embroidery stuff, and it was always fascinating watching her and the machine work.
Lol...wow...I looked at the picture and read the post but it didn't really sink in...you posted your etsy info...duuhhhh. it's been a long week and it's only Monday.
The irony of the design is hilarious.
Vaxxed and ready to eat ass
I want a patch that says this!
Waxed, vaxxed and hacked
Everyone rides for free
I prefer people stay away from me anyway. I'd hate to let people know it's safe to get inside my gravitational field.
This is a lighthearted jab. The users throwing a fit over this should take a hike. Shit is dope.
I love it. All the cringe and "YOU'RE A SHEEP!!1!" comments are amazing
I think they did it wrong then - most vaccine jabs are in the muscle of the shoulder
I probably would have done crossed hypos like a skull and crossbones, but then I didn't think of it without first seeing yours. Also don't have the skills, tools, or ambition. Very nice work.
Well this comments thread is full of closeted anti-vaxxers it looks like
Edit: Proven, my point is.
Yeah I’m kinda shocked at how many are coming out of the woodwork honestly
MUH FREEDUMBS™️ Yeah, it is alarming that people find being against vaccines and science OR being anti-vaxx apologists (we’ll say) think it is somehow a display of their freedom and even patriotism. Oh well, a very good learning moment for future people.
The comment with your link to your store doesn’t load for me, can you post a direct link to your store?
Great design btw. I only need a Sons of Pfizer Chapter patch to go with it.
Edit: NVM I found it in your comment history
I found it in your comment history, again, great design
You Americans are so weird about this shit, still kinda cool tho.
Can you dig it!?
I read it as YAXXED and was confused
Looks great. How very Doom of you
Niiice! I'd totally get one!
Add a 5G and Microchip symbols for a troll patch!
Oh yeah! On the skull forehead, a chip that says 5G on it. Genius.
I may actually pay to have one of theses custom made.
This guy gets it. 🙄
Can you believe how many people are in the comments whining about how this is virtue signaling? It’s not, it’s clearly making fun of anti-vaxxers. The 5G + microchip would fit perfectly.
A neat design, and it's pissing off the right people. A job well done, OP 👏
I'm not an anti-vaxxer and I've been vaccinated. I do think this is a little tacky though.
I understand that perspective, but I also can see it as a celebration of the COVID-19 vaccines. It's unbelievably awesome that vaccines became available only a little after year after the pandemic started, and the mRNA technology the Pfizer and Moderna ones use is really cool.
The way I see it is that it's similar to everyone wanting their "I voted" sticker around election time. Everyone gets happy/proud of having that little perk to showcase it off.
I just like getting a sticker...
Although I *did* get a "I got vaccinated" sticker when I went in.
That's dope! Where are you planning on placing it?
sorting by controversial, im going in
It's always fun
Anyone who wears vaxxed shit is insane
To each their own... Live and let live. If it's not harming anyone, why pass judgment?
Nah anti-vaxxers are fools who deserve to be ridiculed. That’s not insane, it’s entertaining.
While this is true, the patch still looks aesthetically pleasing.
It's equal to wearing a shirt that says, Hey! I'm not an asshole nutjob!
As opposed to a red MAGA hat that says “Hey! I AM an asshole nutjob!”
I've been wearing a mask to do that.
It is weird
Vaxxed but still not relaxed.
Perfect for that virtue signaling rider in your life
Isn’t that what *all* patches amount to?
Where’s the lie?
It’s not bragging about getting vaxxed, it’s making fun of people who think being vaxxed is dangerous.
Today Reddit learns about irony.
Agreed. Hopefully the next patch is a shard of glass so the unvaccinated who parrot "virtue signaling" all over the internet can have something to show how fragile they are since simply saying you are vaccinated is offensive...even when it makes no mention of what they are vaccinated against. Or maybe they should just make it a troll, probably would be a better fit.
"Unlike you snowflakes that get offended when I say the n-word, I only get offended when people promote optional vaccinations, FOR I AM A WOLF AMONG SHEEP 💪"
Given a choice between a virtue signaler and an "imma shit-flinging Trump chump ape" signaler, I'll take the former.
I don’t get the obsession of telling everyone you’re vaccinated.
I think it's the same intent of the "I voted" stickers and "I gave blood" pins and such. Remind other people to do it, and normalize at as something everyone (who is able to) does, because it should be.
To some people it may feel a little silly, and that's fine. I get it; I never wear my "I voted" sticker or those blood donation pins.
Some people claim it's "virtue signalling" but that would imply the statement is disingenuous. Someone who is against vaccines but would wear something claiming they're vaccinated in order to fit in or receive praise would be "virtue signalling".
Gotta show someone you aren't a Republican now that masking is over.
He just made a patch tho
We should encourage other people to get vaccinated in fun, light hearted ways because it encourages them to get caught up in the spirit and also get vaccinated.
This isn't sharing your star sign or telling us you love to go mudding, it's a shared activity with a community focus that benefits the entire planet. People should be encouraged to engage in it.
Please post up a link to buy. I would say many of us would buy these, I know I would be in for one.
Looks like a Call of Duty prestige icon
Awesome job man, looks great!
Oh I'd love to have this in COD.
