I graduated from Drexel in 2016 and am planning to move back to Philly. At that time there was obviously crime that you had to be careful about, but all my friends and family who still live in Philly have told me how much worse it has gotten since I graduated.
Should I be reconsidering my move back to Philly for work? If not, what neighborhoods would you suggest I look at? It feels like I don't know what is going on/where the livable places are in the city anymore
I’ve been in the car trying to get home/out of Chinatown and into Washington Square for over an hour now. How does this city not have cops directing traffic or postings of detour signs?!? Wouldn’t have left the city if I had known about the parade.
What a freaking mess. We were caught in it for hours south of Market (and someone scraped our brand new car, which was great). People were blocking the box so no one could get through at the lights. Really feeling the holiday magic.
This is unfortunately some of the crap the PPA creates. You might need to go there physically, much as a pain in the butt that is. Best of luck.
And, BTW, Millers are decent, but **not** authentic Philly soft pretzels. You want Center City Pretzel, Bernie's. or Philly Pretzel Co. for the real deal.
Hi all, I’m visiting next week and just want to make sure I’m understanding how to pay for transit.
It looks like my best bet is to get a Key card and just put money into the travel wallet. Two questions - Am I correct in understanding that I need to buy a physical card and there isn't a digital/mobile option? And that rides would then be $2/trip?
If you’re at 30th street it will be relatively easy to get a key card. You can also pay cash (2.50) on the bus/trolley. Don’t think you can do cash for most subway stops.
Yes to both!
You can make things more complicated by checking out the pass options (might save you a few bucks depending on your plans), and registering your card online (refunds the 5 bucks the card costs back into your travel wallet).
If you wanna keep it as simple as possible though, you've got it. Acquire physical card in Philly. Put money in the travel wallet. Use card for 2 bucks outta said travel wallet per swipe.

Oh man, birthday dinner was incredible. Alpen Rose is now one of my favorite places in the city, just for the vibes alone. The food, drinks, and service just add to it. Highly recommend it for any special occasions.
As someone who grew up not celebrating Christmas, I'm kind of excited to get into it. We bought a chocolate advent calendar today, but fiancé was disappointed that the Lego Star Wars one was sold out. So of course I immediately went on the Disney website and ordered one for him (*shhh, no one tell him, it's a surprise*).
Any suggestions for budget Christmas decorations in the city? I'd like a smallish tree, like 4 feet tops, but the ones on Amazon are like $60. Artificial is preferable, I don't want my cats eating pine needles. I just really like the cozy festive atmosphere of Christmas, in a very secular, non-Christian way.
I ordered a 4 foot tree from Michael's last night, it was only $30! Not sure if their sale is still going on, but they seem to have a lot of seasonal items marked down.
I’m so freaked out. I just had to clean up a dead mouse on my patio. (Killed by feral alley cat). I didn’t notice it at first and even stepped on the little guy’s mutilated corpse. I need a glass of wine.
I’m getting back into the casual sex thing after a huge amount of years away. Do people in the dating scene *really* use dams/condoms during oral?
It’s a thing I was taught to do in college sex ed workshops that I never did and never saw anyone else doing
1. Any bars in East Falls/Roxborough/Manayunk area have a lively crowd for World Cup games? And will definitely be open for the US game?
2. Any recommendations for good Volvo mechanics in the city? Not a dealership, but actually has VIDA and all the computery to fully diagnose the issue?
1) There are lots of posts here about bars; might want to check them out.
2) 3 I've heard good things about are Swedeworks Automotive, Dennis Auto, and Harris Automotive
It’s been 7 days since I tested positive for COVID. I am supposedly negative now and doing OK but I’m kind of terrified to start working out again. How would I know if I’m one of the people whose heart got all fucked up? :/
That makes sense. If you test negative on one of them they say you are no longer contagious. But I'd i still had strong symptoms i would be dubious like you. Good luck. I hope you feel better.
Do you have a smartwatch with EKG? Or your primary care or urgent care should be able to run a 12 lead, and should be able to interpret any common abnormalities.
having a real freakout friday now, one of the spur trains had “express” and “walnut-locust” written on it so i ran onto that train thinking it was the express 😭 at least i got to see that abandoned bsl station!
after almost a month, i feel like i'm slowly coming out of a depressive episode. i'm not celebrating yet cuz usually i begin the day hoping it'll be better, but by night (cuz of how dark it is) i go back into feeling shitty.. we'll see how it keeps unfolding. anyway, can someone post again what's the website i can look for basement/indie/house shows? going to see bands really helps my mood
Any idea why some posts are automatically removed? I tried to post a photo of the Rittenhouse hawk and got a message that it was removed by moderators before it even finished posting. Not sure if it's because I'm a new account or what. It seemed similar to other content so I thought it was good to go.

Last Friday came down with a fever of 100 and felt like total crap. Three days later, I'm able to go work and then by Wednesday coughing myself to sleep and waking up throughout the night. No other symptoms.
Now, it's constant cough throughout the day with a loss of appetite.
I haven't met my deductible or out of pocket maximum, I'm missing out on work and haven't worked there long enough to have paid sick days.
Do I go to the doctor or keep calling out of work until it gets better?
So..ugh.
Cough throughout the day with no appetite? [That's RSV, friend.](https://www.cdc.gov/rsv/about/symptoms.html) I had it myself a few weeks ago. Nothing you can do for RSV but rest, do your best to stay hydrated, and treat the symptoms. If you have comorbidities that may mean you're at risk for pneumonia, visit the doctor.
Any tips on making a basement living room warmer? I just got a rug which makes a bit difference, and going to get two bright lamps. I do have a window but the natural light is poor.
In terms of lighting, I always avoid overhead lights. Lamps are just cozier.
If you mean warm as in the opposite of cold, get a good thermal base layer and some quality slippers. My GF didn't learn the wonders of a good base layer for years. She thought yoga pants under jeans qualified.
It works for the moderate cold. But by the middle of January you need the waffle print jawns. I actually do yoga pants/jeans if it's about 35-50F. Lower than that you need the waffle print thermals. Plus good underwear and socks. And a neck warmer.
I got base layer stuff from Uniqlo a few years ago. Very smooth thin fabric and is really warm. I don’t make it a habit to be outside too long when it’s below freezing though lol
Today is my first day at Lululemon and it's...all zooms. I JUST WANT TO SELL SOMEONE SOME LEGGINGS 😫
I went on a couple dates recently with a guy I dated briefly a few years ago and I can't get a read on him. I know I need to do the "don't worry if he likes you, worry if you like HIM" thing. He hasn't tried to make a move, which is odd because we did some *filthy* stuff the first time we were dating.
Make a move. At a later point during my dating, I just stopped making the first move with ladies. It was part me being aloof, part me not caring, and part thinking that women must find it really annoying being hit on constantly. So I focused on chilling and being myself.
I also happen to, uh, appreciate assertive women. I've dated ladies who would sooner let a potential relationship/partner fizzle out than they would make a first move. And I think that's lame.
My two cents. Good luck.
**GRAB HIM BY THE**........ [...ahem...] *hand,* look him straight in the eye and say "yo, can we make out again?"
maybe its just me, but i find it easier to re-hook up with old hook ups (assuming they aren't in a relationship at time of re-meeting again). theres already a sense of ease with each other (....and each others junk....). worst they can say is "no, its not like that anymore".
i dunno, could also be i've just unlearned shame as i got older too
We're in the middle of the hiring process for a new position in my department, and some of the candidates have sent us some *shockingly* terrible stuff. Ignoring the people who are applying for an editing gig with really dumb spelling/usage/grammar errors in their cover letters, we've had:
* A dude who started his cover letter with, "Gentlemen:" in the year twenty twenty-two (I'll note here that I'm the only man in my entire wing of the department).
* A person who referred to themselves in the third person in their cover letter.
* An individual who apparently runs a decently successful freelance biz whose cover letter dissolved into a mess of misplaced cut-and-paste gibberish. I mean, I've seen weird sentence splices before, but this was huge chunks of the entire middle of the thing.
* A person who must've been shotgunning resumes to every opening in our larger org, since not a single bit of their experience related to our department's functions... but they are coming from a job in the larger industry.
Also, if you're shelling out for a master's degree, be sure to remember master's has an apostrophe in it.
I can relate....back when I was hiring, aside from misspellings, etc., one guy included an 8 X 10 head shot of himself. Another had a foldover resume with his name in huge type on the front, followed with, "A young man on the way up." A woman included several modeling-type photos (job had zero to do with modeling). Another included a hardcover copy of a book they were mentioned in on one page, marginally. Another ended her resume with, "You won't regret hiring me. I'm really good!" Several gave their parents as business references. My favorite was a guy who stapled the following page to his resume: "You can stop looking now. You found the best possible candidate for the job." It was in red ink.
The most efficient greeting, unless they know the person's name, is simply, "Good morning."
The majority of resumes that I see come through our office are just atrocious. So many people don't bother to check spelling/grammar AT ALL (it's not like you even have to click 'spell check' anymore, the fucking computer does it for you). It's truly baffling.
Not sure where you work or what type of job openings you have. I look at resumes and interact with candidates for roles at my company's warehouse all day long. Not everyone has the same level of education/computer know-how as you do. A lot of the job seekers I work with don't even own a smartphone, let alone a laptop. At the same time, I probably couldn't operate a forklift or navigate 500 lbs of product from a rack 20 ft in the air to a loading bay on my first try, but most of the folks I interview can.
I hear you. The roles we hire for require a bachelors degree so I assume that if someone made it through college they can put together a minimally coherent resume. Although I’m apparently very wrong about that.
You very much are. I'm not hiring but I keep a database of students for internships in my department (work in research at CHOP). The amount of students, usually in undergrad for a STEM degree, who can't put together a coherent resume or cover letter is astounding. Now, to be fair, I don't remember ever learning to write a resume in college. I only learned how to because I went to my university's career center on my own volition. This might be on the shitty education system. Though I'm not sure if that has changed since I was in school over a decade ago.
My experiences on the hiring side have made me even more perplexed by how hard it's always been for me to find a job. Most people are a MESS, and approximately 1% of candidates have a cover letter that isn't blatantly a copy paste of every cover letter they've sent in their lives. Yet I've applied to job ads that are basically identical to my resume with a thoughtful cover letter and not even been called for a phone screen.
Sometimes the job is already decided but they need to go through the motions to keep it legal. Sometimes the person hiring has a specific "type" in mind....yup, it can be frustrating.
Writing customized cover letters for every job is BS though imo. If I see a job that is a great fit I'll write a cover letter otherwise I'm not sending one or hitting them with a copy paste. If my resume is what they are looking for but they won't bring me in for an interview due to a cover letter they can get fucked.
Best bet is to write a skeleton version that generally works for your field and hang a bit of customization on that. Last time I was hunting for new gigs, I had two skeletons (one strictly editing, one slightly more generalized to communications/PR) - usually took me less than 10 minutes per app to tailor it.
Potentially. A couple of the people who made it through the cut to get a phone screener in our situation just sent resumes, and we threw out as many applicants because of horrendous cover letters as we did for being unqualified (or marginally qualified).
If your resume is very close to the job description, sure. But I've seen a lot of candidates with resumes that are tangential to the job, and I could be convinced that their experience and interests fit the job if they made the case, but they don't.
Seriously, it's baffling. When I've been in job search mode, I worry (apparently way too much!) about being a fit for the gig, and meanwhile we're just getting straight trash. I think we managed five or six candidates to progress to a screener, and we're expecting half of them to wash out, which is absurdly low.
The 95 south entrance from aramingo is a death trap. People will merge at 20 mph and it’s a single lane that eventually ends and the other traffic is going 80 and people will use the shoulder to bypass others. It’s a fucking nightmare. The Port Richmond one is no better either. Guess I’ll die.
Also I’ve gone to pho 75 four times this week and I have zero regrets that place could cure world peace.
Sometimes I think traffic engineers are forced to become experts in behavioral psychology, and then design the roads the opposite way that expertise would indicate.
Found out two days ago that our house, that we bought last year, has still not been approved for a homestead exemption. I sent in the paperwork in September of 2021 and thought it had been approved - nope, on the OPA website it says No and it STILL lists the old owner's name even though he passed away and my husband's name is listed in the sale records on that same page.
Anyway, I called the hotline on Wednesday and understandably was on hold forever until they finally required me to leave a message so that they could call me back, which I did. Never got a call back. Completely forgot about it until today because I've been busy with work and school.
Called back today and once again left a message and also found out you had to say "Send Message" after leaving your message in order for it to be sent. What the hell. I guess we're just screwed for next year but I thought I'd try anyway.
ETA: Got a call back from a very nice man who informed me that we are not eligible for the homestead exemption because there's a tax abatement on our property!! News to me lol, all records said the house was built in 1915. I know the previous owner did a lot of renovations so he must have applied for it, but the house still needs a good amount of work. The guy on the phone said it looked like it was about 9 years in so we will be eligible for homestead in 2024. Also told me I have to contact two more places to 1) ask about the abatement timeframe and 2) get the owner name changed on the revenue website. Oh well, at least it's not the worst news haha
Sorry to hear this. This happened to me in 2020 for 2021 taxes. It’s infuriating that they also don’t send an update when you’re approved. I took to calling monthly and got to know the workers pretty well as a result lol. They’re very helpful when you can get through, but the whole system is completely messed up.
I'm in the same boat. Honestly, every office dealing with real estate in this town seems to be severely understaffed and using pre 20th century technology. The amount of time that it takes to record the sale, transfer the deed, and populate the information for the new owners across city agencies is completely bats. I seriously don't understand how this city can be so inefficient in 2022.
Okay, I've also been waiting for my verdict for a while. My house is still being listed under the previous owners and we bought in 2019. Sheesh. Thanks for your update--I feel somehow less concerned now?! If it's everyone and not just us, at least we're in the same boat, I guess.
Yeah just got off the phone with that office and he was like, "Hm, it's been a year and a half so it SHOULD be updated by now...you will need to submit an inquiry to have it changed."
I kinda get that they might have so many documents from the last two years and very inefficient systems that it might take time to update but 3 years is WILD. The guy I talked to said you can email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or submit the inquiry on your property page on the OPA website and that might speed up the process. He also said I could reach out to the revenue office by phone but they're SO busy that I'd have to call either at 8:30am immediately when they open or 4:30pm to get any chance of talking to them. I'm going to start with the website and see what happens.
Contact your councilperson, preferably by email. CC the at-large councilpersons, so that your councilperson knows they are seeing this. One or two times in this email mention how much better things were and how much more competent the city government was under the previous councilperson of that district. If you are moving into Philly from someplace else, get across how shocked you are at just how incompetent the city is and how much of you valuable time is being wasted. The idea is to not overtly insult your councilperson but to strongly imply that someone could be easily doing their job better.
Maybe you think I'm being glib and making a joke but this is serious advice that has got me results in the past when I had an issue with the city.
This morning, I woke up to a woman yelling at top volume how she refused to be disrespected. Five minutes later, she was ordering the police and the mafia to murder the woman who disrespected her.
*The police actually showed up for this. This woman has power*
We will be getting a caroling night together in RoxYUnk on 12/23. Probably pretzel park. Let me know if you want an invite when we get details sorted out.
hospital blood delivery day 💪💪💪 also shoutout to center city ppd officers for showing up 45 minutes after we called them to our store yesterday ❤️❤️❤️ manager had to call them again 40 minutes into waiting and then one finally showed up lol. almost had to kick out the crazy guy myself
It’s really sad that at first I thought you were being serious about shouting them out for arriving in 45 minutes because I thought that was better than they usually do. The bar is so so low.
Lentils are surprisingly good in Italian dishes! Cookie and Kate has a few recipes with them, and the NYT Cooking has a "lentils diavalo" that I make all the time. A crucial grocery item in these unprecedented times.
i was speaking about her base on reddit, not her. sorry if that was unclear from the above sentence.
i think gym is an above average philly pol and a person who means well, but i also think she, like many other members of city council, gets too wrapped up in appeasing all her constituencies that she never actually gets anything done. maybe it's my fault i can't name any progressive legislation she's actually put forward or passed, but i can definitely name a handful of instances where she pursued value signaling policies or rhetoric that actually harmed members of the community (bulletproof glass bans, belittling ethnic food trucks, etc).
in my opinion, she's more of an opportunist than a get-things-done politician, and we need someone who will get things done not appease interest groups. i am looking forward to seeing the horse race for 2023 and i think she'll finish in the top 3 contenders, and if she's the best choice i'll vote for her. but she's not my first (or second) choice.
because every comment i read about her is more or less a take on her nice personality and can-do attitude. not a lot of talk about regarding how she's transformed the city policy-wise the last 6 years.
it can be true that people like her for her personality AND she doesn't have a ton of policy success to promote. a mayor should be personable, but the race shouldn't just be a personality contest.
>because every comment i read about her is more or less a take on her nice personality and can-do attitude.
Dude neither of those two things are race or gender related
Some might say you're making up your own inferences based on prejudice. Idk why it's so hard to believe people can be swayed by rhetoric and a charming personality
no harm, no foul. like i said i don't think she's bad, she's just not my first pick. i hope people can justify her as a good candidate to me beyond the nice interactions they've had with her though.
Saying the b-word is usually a recipe for disaster, but I’m bored in the ER for the first time in at least 3 years.
Currently I’m off from 12/13-2/5. I *could* work, and I *probably* will work a few days, but otherwise I have no plans other than trying to snag a PS5, making my dad’s scalloped potatoes, and maybe taking a 3 day jaunt somewhere warm. What should I dooooooo? Places to volunteer/donate time? Things to explore?
Considering the stress involved in your job, I think a few days of just vegging would be therapeutic. As far as a warm place, maybe SC? Charleston's actually not a bad city.
Yes, I’m definitely going to be lazy for a few days, though I’m the type of person who struggles to do nothing!
Charleston is somewhere I’ve never been but it looks really cute! I was thinking maybe the florida keys because I really want to see the Hemingway kitties!
When I went to Key West, the Hemingway house was one of the things I wanted to see most. TBH, was a bit disappointing. The admission is, I think, $17, not outrageous. But for some reason, if this makes sense, you just don't "feel" the place. It feels more like a sterile museum than a person's home. The cats are everywhere. Most had that really indifferent cat attitude.
Also, if it matters, the nightlife in KW is a lot of drunk, loud, sloppy people....think NOLA but not quite as entertaining.
I have a few friends down there and that’s a really good idea. Fell’s Point is super cute, and the aquarium is phenom, though I think the rainforest (the best part!) is closed/being renovated. Thanks!
Oh, you posted about the museum of industry recently, right? It's been on my list of places to visit forever but I haven't made it there yet.
Also, your post was wayyyyy too long to read. Maybe check yourself going forward.
Never got into either of those acts, but as a hobbyist guitarist myself, J. Mascis can play the hell out of that Jazzmaster. A friend sent me some videos of a previous Dinosaur Jr. performance in Philly a few years ago, and he was shredding in front of those three Marshall fullstacks. Enjoy the show!
Winter break 2008, I listened to this song "See How We Are" by X over and over again like thousands of times in a 3 week period until I was completely sick of it. Anyway, I was working at an internship over the holidays and on my lunch break I walked down to Repo Records to find more X and popping out of this one CD was a handwritten note that said this album changed my life, blah blah blah, please buy me. So of course I did and that's the story of the one Dinosaur Jr. CD I own. Have fun tonight! Be safe!
YLAOM! I had to look it up. Surprised I still knew the lyrics to Little Furry Things. I did listen to their Cure cover a lot but I was more about that next generation of bands (Death Cab, Shins, etc.). I always *wanted* to be into Dinosaur, Jr. though. They seem like something a cool person would like.
I need to get into the west philly food scene, but it's so far and foreign compared to center city / south philly / north philly. does anyone else feel this way?
Maybe I'll see what this tofu banh mi is all about a fu wah...i wouldnt say im a huge fan of mediterranean but that seems to be mostly what the restaurants around baltimore ave are
I don't want to be all negative nancy and shit, but if you're used to south philly banh mi I would temper your expectations. The tofu is tasty, but the roll is sad.
Some personal west philly favorites - Saad's (particularly the chicken shish tawook), and Quality Taste or Little Delicious.
yeah cafe cuong banh mis are different. i have had fu wah regular banh mis which are ok, but the tofu one seems to be highly regarded even though tofu to me is just gelatinized water. i tried quality taste and they gave me an obscene amount of food that was mid. is little delicious better? i have that on my radar as well
I'll admit Quality's cabbage and rice and peas can be a little hit or miss for me, but the curry goat and stewed chicken (get oxtail gravy on the rice and peas) have always been pretty great, in my opinion. I like Little's cabbage more, but it's all around very similar.
mood cafe is clutch for chaat and smoothies. buna cafe is a little deeper into west but the best ethiopian i've had in town. taco taco (or whatever it's called now) is great basic mexican.
EDIT: i'll typically close out a taco taco visit by stopping at weckerlys or lil pop shop. 44th st is such a nice few blocks of food and treats
Fu wah is excellent! Also loads of great Ethiopian restaurants, any of which is worth checking out. Gojjo is one of my favorites. I also recommend Taco Taco if you enjoy Mexican food.
If gastronomically touring West Philly, be sure to look into the Ethiopian food scene there if that's up your alley. Abyssinia is awesome and Gojjo has an Ethiopian cheesesteak that's pretty tasty.
My dog had surgery yesterday to remove a mass in his mouth, and the vet found and removed a second as well while he was in there. They were sent off for biopsy, so hopefully results come in soon. My baby just turned 11 earlier this week, but acts and looks like a younger dog. I still worry.
[Dog tax.](https://imgur.com/a/nry8p4B)
Aww, sweet boy! Wishing for good results.
My baby turned 9 this year and went under for a dental exam, and I was so worried about the anesthesia given her age. I so so wish they have longer lifespans.
I was nervous about the anesthesia too, but I wanted to take care of the issue while it was still small. He’s really healthy for his age and such a sweet boy; I’m not really ready for this to be something bad.
Don't think we're doing a tree this year due to a new cat. I'm not even worried about the tree getting knocked over or whatever (although that feels pretty likely) but this guy eats EVERYTHING and the last thing I want is an emergency vet visit because of a stomach full of pine needles. Maybe I'm being crazy. Am I being crazy? I hope so because I'm really missing the tree.
With all the “Jawn “ products/ menu items / bus signs, can we open a Turkish restaraunt called Istanboul?

The freak out was in Delaware today. Carjackings and shootouts on the highway. And traffick from hell.

Try Kindy's for Christmas stuff. Huge selection at good prices. https://www.kindys.com/
If you are ok with a real tree, the stand at Passyunk & McKean has affordable trees and they start at $30
Moving into my new apartment on Spruce Hill this weekend. I will be new to Philly and am feeling both excited and anxious! :)
Hi future neighbor! It’s nice here. Welcome to Philly ⚡️
Great spot for moving to city first time. I did the same and I’ve moved to south phil and center city since but I miss your area..
Does anyone know where I can get a box of King Arthur Gluten-Free Sugar Cookie Mix? Or any gluten-free sugar cookie mix?
Got it at whole foods last year around this time!
I'd suggest Giant or Whole Foods, they usually have a section dedicated to gluten free baking (near the organic aisle).
I’m so freaked out. I just had to clean up a dead mouse on my patio. (Killed by feral alley cat). I didn’t notice it at first and even stepped on the little guy’s mutilated corpse. I need a glass of wine.
You are so sweet and innocent
A friend's cat used to bring her only the heads as a gift...
That’s horrifying. Your poor friend! I can’t get the image of this mouse out of my head. Cats are weird. He didn’t eat it - just tortured it.
Good job to kitty…otherwise the mouse might be inside your place.
Cats are some good predators 🐈
I’m getting back into the casual sex thing after a huge amount of years away. Do people in the dating scene *really* use dams/condoms during oral? It’s a thing I was taught to do in college sex ed workshops that I never did and never saw anyone else doing
No
What is "supposedly" negative? An assumption or a rapid test result?
The two rapid tests I took. I said supposedly because I still have symptoms.
Good point, thanks!
perfect username
So do we think modern baseball is reuniting tomorrow or what?
wait, wat?
Looking forward to seeing the tree lighting tonight at Blue Cross River Rink. That area is always great in the winter season!
having a real freakout friday now, one of the spur trains had “express” and “walnut-locust” written on it so i ran onto that train thinking it was the express 😭 at least i got to see that abandoned bsl station!
Ok you get to the Amtrak 30th St station at 10am Saturday. Any spots within like a 5 minute walk showing the game with beer?
The Post should have it on! 129 S 30th St
Thanks! Looks like normal hours have them open at 11, so hopefully they’re opening a little early!
They open at 9:30 for the game so you’re good there
Perfect! Thanks!
after almost a month, i feel like i'm slowly coming out of a depressive episode. i'm not celebrating yet cuz usually i begin the day hoping it'll be better, but by night (cuz of how dark it is) i go back into feeling shitty.. we'll see how it keeps unfolding. anyway, can someone post again what's the website i can look for basement/indie/house shows? going to see bands really helps my mood
Any idea why some posts are automatically removed? I tried to post a photo of the Rittenhouse hawk and got a message that it was removed by moderators before it even finished posting. Not sure if it's because I'm a new account or what. It seemed similar to other content so I thought it was good to go.
Your account does not meet the age/karma threshold and is being filtered by automoderator. We can manually approve posts as we come across them, but you will need to boost karma in other subs and be patient until you reach the threshold. The general chat threads on Tuesday and Friday are also frequented by the mods, and are a good place to participate and have comments approved to boost karma.
Out of curiosity what are the karma thresholds?
We do not disclose the age/karma requirements.
Thanks! I appreciate the response.
I upvoted you because pretzels
Go to a doctor - do not risk getting pneumonia
yes go see a Dr. sorry
Any tips on making a basement living room warmer? I just got a rug which makes a bit difference, and going to get two bright lamps. I do have a window but the natural light is poor.
An electric blanket sounds warm and cozy.
needs to be a wool rug..
Space heater
Those ones that look like a little fire place are shockingly effective and produce a surprisingly cozy glow.
A good pair of slippers? They helped out a lot when I lived in an apartment that lacked insulation.
In terms of lighting, I always avoid overhead lights. Lamps are just cozier. If you mean warm as in the opposite of cold, get a good thermal base layer and some quality slippers. My GF didn't learn the wonders of a good base layer for years. She thought yoga pants under jeans qualified.
>She thought yoga pants under jeans qualified. Wait, it doesn't?
It works for the moderate cold. But by the middle of January you need the waffle print jawns. I actually do yoga pants/jeans if it's about 35-50F. Lower than that you need the waffle print thermals. Plus good underwear and socks. And a neck warmer.
Ugh my skin doesn't like the texture of the waffle print. 😩
I got base layer stuff from Uniqlo a few years ago. Very smooth thin fabric and is really warm. I don’t make it a habit to be outside too long when it’s below freezing though lol

Taking a break from reddit helps.
Today is my first day at Lululemon and it's...all zooms. I JUST WANT TO SELL SOMEONE SOME LEGGINGS 😫 I went on a couple dates recently with a guy I dated briefly a few years ago and I can't get a read on him.
Good luck.
An ex is an ex for a reason; do keep that in mind....speaking from experience
**GRAB HIM BY THE**........ [...ahem...] *hand,* look him straight in the eye and say "yo, can we make out again?" maybe its just me, but i find it easier to re-hook up with old hook ups (assuming they aren't in a relationship at time of re-meeting again). theres already a sense of ease with each other (....and each others junk....). worst they can say is "no, its not like that anymore". i dunno, could also be i've just unlearned shame as i got older too

Search this thread and Tuesday's thread. You're the umpteenth person to ask about this. (I would go with Brauhaus Schmitz, myself).
Thanks. Will search, delete original comment
We're in the middle of the hiring process for a new position in my department, and some of the candidates have sent us some *shockingly* terrible stuff. Ignoring the people who are applying for an editing gig with really dumb spelling/usage/grammar errors in their cover letters, we've had: * A dude who started his cover letter with, "Gentlemen:" in the year twenty twenty-two (I'll note here that I'm the only man in my entire wing of the department).
I thought you meant that someone wrote "Gentlemen: in the year twenty twenty-two" to start their cover letter, would have been incredibly funny.
13.5 years out of work here: my resume still lists my now deleted email address hosted by Juno. Sorry; part of the problem haha.
[Juno](https://youtu.be/031vKBPk5eA)?
"Dear Sir or Madman..."
No offense, but that attitude isn't gonna help you. Yeah, covers are a pain in the ass, but a necessary evil
Recruiter here: they aren't.
That, plus covers give you a small sense not only of the person, but their basic writing skills
Anyone been to Madis Coffee Roasters yet? Opened recently by 35/36 and Lancaster by UCity.
Yeah just got off the phone with that office and he was like, "Hm, it's been a year and a half so it SHOULD be updated by now...you will need to submit an inquiry to have it changed." I kinda get that they might have so many documents from the last two years and very inefficient systems that it might take time to update but 3 years is WILD.
I went to Barry's Bootcamp yesterday for the first time in awhile. Everyone was so hot. It was kind of annoying tbh.
I just looked it up online and cannot tell if it's a gym, a nightclub, or a cult.
all of the above?

Moving from the Riverfront to Center City next week and very excited about the nicer, bigger, place, and improved walkability.

Because her only personality trait and political belief is... being an Asian woman? Kind of a weird thing to say
i was speaking about her base on reddit, not her. sorry if that was unclear from the above sentence. i think gym is an above average philly pol and a person who means well, but i also think she, like many other members of city council, gets too wrapped up in appeasing all her constituencies that she never actually gets anything done. maybe it's my fault i can't name any progressive legislation she's actually put forward or passed, but i can definitely name a handful of instances where she pursued value signaling policies or rhetoric that actually harmed members of the community (bulletproof glass bans, belittling ethnic food trucks, etc). in my opinion, she's more of an opportunist than a get-things-done politician, and we need someone who will get things done not appease interest groups. i am looking forward to seeing the horse race for 2023 and i think she'll finish in the top 3 contenders, and if she's the best choice i'll vote for her. but she's not my first (or second) choice.
I mean that's all well and good, but what leads you to believe "her base on reddit" only likes her because of her race and gender
because every comment i read about her is more or less a take on her nice personality and can-do attitude. not a lot of talk about regarding how she's transformed the city policy-wise the last 6 years. it can be true that people like her for her personality AND she doesn't have a ton of policy success to promote. a mayor should be personable, but the race shouldn't just be a personality contest.
>because every comment i read about her is more or less a take on her nice personality and can-do attitude. Dude neither of those two things are race or gender related
i'm just reading between the lines
Some might say you're making up your own inferences based on prejudice. Idk why it's so hard to believe people can be swayed by rhetoric and a charming personality
[удалено]
no harm, no foul. like i said i don't think she's bad, she's just not my first pick. i hope people can justify her as a good candidate to me beyond the nice interactions they've had with her though.
Above all else, Gym is an opportunist who loves publicity but never offers any real solutions.
I thought you were gonna say you yelled "bitch" in the waiting room to see what would happen :P You could do that?
Would definitely make the day more exciting! 😂
Ew, I hate that last paragraph. Maybe it’s not on my list!
Sorry....but yeah, I didn't find it endearing

I have a few friends down there and that’s a really good idea. Fell’s Point is super cute, and the aquarium is phenom, though I think the rainforest (the best part!) is closed/being renovated. Thanks!
I love Baltimore and go all the time (partner lives there). HMU if you need any recs!

Oh, you posted about the museum of industry recently, right? It's been on my list of places to visit forever but I haven't made it there yet. Also, your post was wayyyyy too long to read. Maybe check yourself going forward.

Gonna smoke weed under the El before the Dinosaur Jr and Guided By Voices show at Fillmore tonight
He’s a geared out assassin. Can’t sound bad if it’s too loud and too distorted.
Be safe!
Thanks! Which album? Dino jr has a pocket of fire records- you’re living all over me and bug are my favorites
Give Bug a whirl
Some of us live in West Philly and this is our every day food. Far and foreign, smh
mood cafe is clutch for chaat and smoothies. buna cafe is a little deeper into west but the best ethiopian i've had in town. taco taco (or whatever it's called now) is great basic mexican. EDIT: i'll typically close out a taco taco visit by stopping at weckerlys or lil pop shop. 44th st is such a nice few blocks of food and treats
i go to the mood in northern libs / fishtown. not too shabby
are they part of the same business? i never realized that if so
It's called Taco Taco Mexican now
thank you thank you
Fu wah is excellent!
The Ethiopian cheesesteak was a revelation
Doro Bet just opened recently and all their food is great as well
Managed to snag tickets to the 12/21 War On Drugs show at Johnny Brenda's and I'm fucking pumped.
Those shits were a little out of my budget but I'm glad you scooped some up!
Wasn’t really in my budget either ha but I bit the bullet
Love that for you. Enjoy the show for me 🤗
thanks friend, really needed a W today
My dog had surgery yesterday to remove a mass in his mouth, and the vet found and removed a second as well while he was in there. They were sent off for biopsy, so hopefully results come in soon. My baby just turned 11 earlier this week, but acts and looks like a younger dog. I still worry. [Dog tax.](https://imgur.com/a/nry8p4B)
Look at that sweet face 😍 I bet his ears are velvety soft.
/r/tuckedinpuppies What a handsome boy! Hope you get some positive news and he is feeling better soon.
Hope you get good news
Now that's a guy I would cuddle with! What a cutie. Get well soon, bud!
Nah. My GF nicknamed her first cat Hoover because he ate literally anything on the floor..including tree needles.
Good to know my adorable idiot isn’t the only one with that particular brand of idiocy.
