[Keim] Rivera said Howell has done enough to remain QB1 entering training camp. "He's young, we know he's young... Lot of room for growth and we know that but he has a good skillset."... Lists: quick twitch, decisions, arm talent. "That's the thing that excites us."

Ron needs double digit wins this year and needs a home run swing. Brissett gets him to where he’s been his entire tenure in DC, at or below 500 (has yet to have a winning record). Sam will be the high ceiling, low floor play we need this year.

JalensTinyPPHurts

8-9 record that wins the nfce, Final offer

Traditional_Mud_1241

That’s how our HC kept his job. Proven methodology. I also recommend coaching their left tackle to “just hold everybody”.

alurimperium

> I also recommend coaching their left tackle to “just hold everybody”. I'm pretty sure that only works if your QB is Tom Brady

BruntFCA_

*looks at 2020 NFC East championship shirt* SOLD!!!

sean369n

You're not wrong. But to be fair, Brissett would be the best QB Rivera has had in DC. Obviously the bar is not high haha but still

tteuh

To be fair, we thought Wentz and Fitzpatrick were the best QBs Rivera has had in DC. We can’t continue to be revolving door for mid QBs and justify it because they’re a smidge better than the last. Ron needs Howell to be special or else he’s gone.

districtdathi

I don't know if he'll be gone either way. As long as he doesn't totally flunk, I think he'll probably move on to a job in the front office and EB will become the Head Coach

Miracow

i dont think anyone thought that about wentz coming in

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

If he makes the playoffs he's safe. I'd rather have what we saw from Brissett than what we saw from Howell. Sample size is huge

Januse88

Disagree. 9-8 and scraping into the playoffs only for a WC blowout and he's gone. With new owners coming in, he needs to make himself unfirable. The only way to do that is probably double digit wins and/or a playoff win

BruntFCA_

“Likes chicken, I mean really likes chicken, it’s almost lunch time and I bet he has chicken,” Rivera continued

LionsSchemer

How quick do we get the “eric bienemy had sam howell to work with” replies if this doesnt work out

Januse88

Nah. In a couple years it'll be "EB can't be a head coach, he's only been successful because he's been OC for the two best QBs in the league."

Kwugibo

I already bet 3 of my friends $10 a piece he'll be a fringe MVP candidate Speak it into existence: #Sam Howell MVP

stringer4

Dude….maybe we need to hand out some gambling packets ourselves over here. Also…maybe?

DanCampbellsNipples

Right now. You just said it

Sad_Bit_9733

He kinda looks like Baker so he’ll be the same QB as Baker fwtw

adambulb

That would mean he’ll be one of the best QBs we’ve had since the 80s.

adambulb

Kirk almost certainly is the best QB we had since Theismann, Brunell had one okay year, and it’s a steeeep dropoff after that.

thehomiemoth

RG3 is the best QB we’ve had since the 80s, in this alternate timeline I live in where he decided to quit football immediately after his rookie season

swamppuppy7043

Did you forget Rex?

SkinsHOFChaseYoung

Do you not put RG3 in this category cause he played for one year? I would still include him. That year was one of the best years ever. 3200 Passing Yards 20 TDs 815 Rushing Yards 7 TDs

industrialbird

Best evaluation I’ve read so far.

StraightCashHomie69

He could easily suck but I was screaming at my TV for my team to draft Howell when he started sliding past the 3rd round. Seems crazy he made it to the 5th round

MSKOnlyScans

Who starts more games this season, Brissett or Howell?

SuedbyHogs

Easy answer. Brisset is only coming in if the season if Howell is mid. We either want Howell to be great or bad enough to get us a top pick. Playing Brisset gains nothing in the long run

SassyCantaloupe64

If Howell sucks, they are not leaving him in to tank for a top pick. Get real

SuedbyHogs

If Howell is even remotely better than Wentz and Heinicke then he is staying in. If he truely sucks in preaeason then he won't even start week 1

t_rex_reflex

We probably secure the top seed so early that brisset will come in to prevent howel from injury for the playoffs. So probably brisset.

Doublds

Love the way you think

DONNIENARC0

I think Brissett starts until around week 6~8 when Howell comes in for the "evaluation"/tank commander period.

[deleted]

Howell is slated to start and has been the entire off-season and just now the head coach confirmed he’s 1 on the depth chart entering training camp.

adambulb

We have a bunch of core guys recently signed to long term deals, a very good defense and a number of good guys on offense. There’s no way we’re tanking. At most, Howell will suck, and we’ll then trade a ton of draft capital to move up for a top QB in the draft.

DONNIENARC0

Right, I'd expect them to finish right around the vegas O/U of 6.5 wins and fire Rivera after the season so new ownership can pick a new coach and that new coach can draft his own QB.

adambulb

I don’t think that’s true either. Ron isn’t going to be fired, he’ll either retire if it looks shaky, or he’ll move to more of a FO position if Harris still wants him around. In the strange circumstances, I don’t think we’ll see traditional moves. Ron is too old to take over a new team, so it’s either stay with us if he wants to keep working or leave football altogether.

districtdathi

LOL, I think we had the same comment. Yours' is worded better (edited for grammar)

DONNIENARC0

Yeah that's fair. "He will no longer be HC one way or another" is probably a better way to phrase it.

districtdathi

Why are you expecting 2 games worse than last season? I know what Vegas tells ya, but that's a sucker's bet. Last year Washington's defense was top 5 and has only improved. Also, Eric Bienemy is still being counted out by the national media. I know I'm biased, but EB is one energetic and motivated maniac. Smart money is on him being the next HC. If I set an over-under it would probably be about 8 wins.

DONNIENARC0

Mainly that the strength of schedule is considerably harder with another ? at QB. Last year they had the 6th easiest schedule heading into the season in large part because they matched up against the AFC South. The AFC South proceeded to go a combined 23-43 as a conference, and the Commanders picked up 3 wins out of their 4 matchups in those games against Jax (in week 1), Indianapolis, and Houston. This year they get the AFC ~~North~~ East, and the same metrics have their schedule ranked 24th. If Bieniemy hits and Howell actually turns out they could definitely smash that. I just don't think I'd bet on it, personally. I also tend to think they'd prioritize player evaluation/growth and a better draft pick that could help them solve QB over another 8 win season.

districtdathi

They don't play the AFC North this season.

DONNIENARC0

Woops, sorry, meant the East. Edited it.

districtdathi

haha, no problem! Honestly, I'm not worried about strength of schedule bc in the grand scheme of things, I think a stronger schedule makes a stronger team. I understand your logic, though. No seasons are the same. I'd still put money on +6.5 if I wasn't a fan, but I never bet on any of my teams bc I know my opinions are skewed. Good luck to the Ravens, man. Half of my family supports them, so we're kinda connected at the hip.

runningblack

🎵Come on down to Washingtown, Caleb🎵 🎵Take a look at all of our buildings🎵 🎵Don't pay attention to this coach, he won't be here🎵

German_Irish_chicken

They won't be that bad..

SuedbyHogs

No thanks. This was a 500 team last year with wins over the Eagles and Cowboys. We wont be near a top 3 pick

MookieKramer

Imo, this is the 2nd best outcome behind winning a Super Bowl

lalalalaasdf

Even if they wanted to tank the talent on the roster is too good to get Caleb unless there’s an apocalyptic season injury wise

pitpatbainsy

Your theory is that they got much, much worse AFTER getting rid of Carson Wentz?

Prince_Wentz11

Dang, no bill burr quick twitch reference.

BabyTRexArms

Who else do they even have lol

sean369n

A top 5-10 defense. A top 10 WR group. The Chief's OC. All they need is a consistent QB.

BabyTRexArms

I meant at QB. Who else do they have except Howell?

sean369n

I mean they signed Brissett. The consensus is that he played average ball last season. He was even 10th in QBR. By those metrics, he would be the best QB Washington has seen since Cousins. Obviously the bar is not high, but those are the facts. If Sam looks good, great. If he shits the bed, then our floor is Brissett, which is way better than what we had last season with Wentz and Heinicke.

MookieKramer

Way better is a stretch

sean369n

You're not wrong. But an upgrade is still an upgrade. Right now our QB2 is an upgrade from both QBs on the roster last season. That's at least a noticeable improvement overall. Really hoping Sam is the guy. It's obviously unlikely, but this fanbase could use another fun season like 2012. Feels like that was the last memorable season really. At least Dan is gone, so that's progress.

Thick_Safe1198

Caleb Williams

deemerritt

Sam Howell

[deleted]

They won’t be anywhere close to bad enough to be in contention for him

DanCampbellsNipples

Yea that's got cardinals written all over it lol.

Gooseduke

I just hope the Texans aren’t bad enough to give the Cardinals #2 as well

Absolutepowers

I think if we suck or go 500 we will sell the house to get Caleb.

SkinsHOFChaseYoung

No way Rivera lets that happen. It's his last year.
