Surprised it’s taken this long to uncover actual cases. People not coming forward?
One of the strongly anti-vax people I know claims that “they’re lying about the covid cases being unvaccinated because we aren’t getting tested.” So I’d say there are a lot of people with symptoms who won’t get tested unless they end up sick enough to go to hospital.
And when they get to hospital, they will deny it's Covid until, dare I say it, they are blue in the face.
"Checked myself into hospital with breathing difficulties, but I've had worse"
" Evil Cindy is a communist nazi"
5 mins later
"I need everyone to pray for me"
I'd say they would talk big talk until they are sick.
Then they become a stuff article. The family that regrets not getting vaccinated, 'we thought it was just a flue".
Or a chimney.
Have a hearth.
A spark of empathy
You guys are on fire
Thanks, remember, be kindling
Yeah I heard similar on Monday at work "it's funny how all the positive wastewater cases are in places with low vaccination rate" followed up with "it's a conspiracy to get us vaxxed"
You literally can’t win in an argument with all the “ah but (insert conspiracy here) - it’s down the rabbit hole for sure
Break out the counter-conspiracy. In the same way that my favourite response to 'they faked the moon landings' is 'you believe in the moon'?, I want to try out the one I read about 'I read that the anti-vax movement is a Psyops plot by Russia/China to weaken the health of the people of NZ.'
There is definitely grounds to believe that Russian agencies would use fake accounts to guide discourse among certain groups.
A great example of this is the way that they encouraged pro-trump discourse in the lead up to the 2016 and 2020 elections. As well as spreading misinfo about the American election being rigged:
There is even some grounds to believe that Russian misinformation agencies have been planting these seeds around vaccines and western government responses:
At the end of the day though, the main target for a lot of these russian groups is American social media audiences. The real problem in New Zealand is that we become secondary victims. As Americans get more and more radicalized on these issues, they feel the need to evangelically spread it.
The number of profiles with American flags in the picture that I see on numerous outlets reporting on or discussing covid-19 in New Zealand is far too many. These american extremists spread this misinfo into our borders as they are so caught up in their rhetoric they feel the need to spread it everywhere.
So in a way it is a russian operation, it's just that we're not the primary targets of it, and beyond that it wouldn't be a problem if more people were just educated to a level adequate for the modern world.
“Don’t wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.”
— Mark Twain
This persons the same. “The government are faking covid deaths so I’ll get vaccinated.”
If that was the case, you'd think they'd be faking *more* than <1 per day.
Fuck, that’s what my mum says
Maybe the original person didn’t have symptoms but who ever they passed it onto got them and got tested
One of them is now in hospital. My guess is that's how they found it.
> People not coming forward?
Considering wastewater was positive 11 days ago, and it took a hospitalisation to make this public, I'd say they're the not-so-nice type who didn't want the government to notice their enterprising entrepreneurial endeavours.
Real estate agents.
Easy there. They might only be Nazis.
Fairly asute observation there:
> Taranaki DHB medical officer of health Dr Jonathan Jarman says the six people were very reluctant to get tested and have not been using the tracer app.
They're too busy traveling down to Wellington and screaming at people.
And where did many of the Wellington protesters come from??
I'd be a paid protester. Either side. I can't find anyone to pay me.
You’re looking at it wrong. The paid protesters were Brian Tamaki’s. They pay him and they protest.
[Insert community here] Facebook pages.
Based on their flags, many came from the US and Russia.
A truly representative cross section of Constitution loving NZ comrades.
I definitely remember one of the news articles I read about the wellington protest on Tuesday quoted an attendee from Stratford. Made me nervous at the time because of the wastewater test results last weekend, which is why I remember it. I'm not feeling at all optimistic about the next week or so down here.
There was a bus and big convoy that went down from Taranaki - https://www.facebook.com/groups/403670534720960/posts/421969872891026/
I think the van that had the accident south of Levin had people that were returning to Stratford.
Nah New Plymouth not stratford
Oh right, my error.
The Failed Level 1 NCEA Association.
Being generous with how far they got in schooling, I'd wager they dropped out at Year 6.
The Flat earth convention
The crystals and essential oils business owners directory.
The insane asylum.
Not RNZ. Dr. Bloomfield in media conference said it was likely from MIQ.
Well at least it shows the wastewater testing works, hopefully they were good at using the contact tracing
Was there any follow up to the Hawke’s bay water testing
It was negative but there had been a lot of rain, so are waiting for the results of the next test.
They weren’t using the app.
No more tracing just mask and vax. No vax? get used to breathing through a tube.
Tracing hasn't stopped, although likely to become far more dependent on Bluetooth tracking
Is this now higher than Auckland per capita?
Not yet. At least 0.17% of Auckland's population currently has Covid, compared to 0.06% for Stratford.
has I mean daily cases
The first strong detection of COVID in the Stratford wastewater was made back on November 1st. So, it seems they (or at least someone) was infectious in the community for quite a long time under Level 2 settings.
i live in stratford and thats what im worried about..stratford is a small town
That one little cluster is 0.1% of Stratford's population
For now. The Auckland outbreak started with a single person, just saying...
Are you thinking 0.1% is *not* much, but will grow? Because no, it's a lot already; by comparison, Auckland is only at 0.2% infection.
No, they’re saying Stratford has a small population. This is a lot of infections relative to the population size.
And the vaccination rate Taranaki wide is still comparatively low- bottom four of the DHBs....honestly!
And very close to New Plymouth
Next stop Palmerston North! Choo Choo!
Whanganui probably too, can't get to Taranaki from welly without going through there.
You can via SH4
Nobody wants to go that way. Reminds me of the hills have eyes territory.
Yeah I realised that about 5 minutes after I posted and went to bed lol.
Ah choo! Ah Choo!
Missed opportunity! 😆
From 0 to 6 cases.. interesting development.
Armchair analysis would indicate there’s a pretty significant spread that’s yet to be detected based on that? Or maybe it’s minor due to a bunch of dickheads just spreading it amongst themselves and not getting tested until they were very ill.
Hopefully its just one household
I was wondering that. Possibly. Hopefully. Six though... yikes.
Based on that article it sounds like it is
Remember that first Devonport Case back in August? At that time there were apparently a couple hundred people infected — but that dude was the first one to get tested.
"The Ministry of Health says all six cases are clearly linked and there is a clear link to the current Auckland outbreak."
Possibly not (but also quite possibly)
Did any of them come down to Wellington for the protests?
Unknown. They were out and about in Stratford though, at a time where there is a Garden festival, Taranaki wide, that people travel to from all over NZ.
A don't know how possible it is with Delta, but generally clusters can be surprisingly large. The small-ish town I lived in in the states had a contained cluster that was over a hundred people.
Exactly what happened in Waikato
Oh heeeeerrrrreeee we go. Their little get together on Tuesday going to really put a target on their unvaxxed asses now.
Did they go? It says linked to Auckland cluster. It was also detected in wastewater on Nov 1st.
Watch Taranaki go from 86% to 90% really really quickly :D
It's a real slap in the face to Auckland having to suffer restrictions to give the country time only to see the rates shoot up when Covid leaks.
I'm just thankful our internal freedom doesn't depend on anyone but ourselves because some out there don't give a single shit until they're personally affected or at risk.
Yup feel like here in Waikato we will have the longest lockdown if we are relying on everyone else to move out of level 3.
The forgotten lockdown.
That's exactly how it feels!
Other regions are having cases & either have 3 day lockdowns or stay in lvl 2.
We are stuck
Northland is claiming a stealth lockdown.
They can't drive to Wellington to protest anything, because the only path is through Lockdown Auckland.
Sure they could hide in someone's car boot?
It's a faux lockdown, you can drive out of Waikato level 3 anytime you want and go do level 2 things in level 2 areas and you'll never see a cop.
Sure, but you won't unless you're a dick.
Person from Bennydale visited my friends garden over the weekend...wrote it down and all. Not even trying to hide their dickness.
Once the auckland border opens at Christmas time it'll be a free for all. We'll all be using the traffic lights before the end of the year.
And when that happens, one week later, everywhere will be red.
Merry Christmas mother f_____s
On the first day of christmas National gave me covid?
Unfortunately that is not an uncommon thing in the world. Some people are quite focused on themselves or the people who directly benefit.
Let Aucklanders travel to areas with trailing vaccine rates.
And this is why I call bullshit on people who complain that we should've started vaxxing sooner. Sure there's probably a bunch who would've taken the vaccine earlier, but the vast majority would've dragged their heels until an outbreak anyway.
Sure, but some places have vaccination rates higher than Auckland. NZ Herald's Top Town competition has Auckland at #5. You'd think it'd be at #1 but apparently not. Also Auckland has 8.2% no injections but Selwyn (near Christchurch) has an amazing 0.6%.
Population of Selwyn vs. population of Auckland may play a part in that.
I'm not sure that's how percentages work
Per capita stats (e.g. vaccination %) aren't always fair to compare against different sized populations. Way more variance in smaller populations especially for things like this. Auckland has a guaranteed population of idiots because of its size.
> Auckland has a guaranteed population of idiots
Made me laugh before I got to the end of the sentence.
Edit to add, sorry Auckland.
It's not just about size. The areas have different socioeconomic profiles.
Yea but it's easier to get those big numbers in a smaller town
Auckland has its own targets though? Auckland needs to reach 90% double vax to open up, the rates in the rest of the country don't matter.
Because the original communication was that Auckland wouldn’t get to leave Auckland until every dhb in the country got to 90% double vax.
So they do matter. Getting out of lockdown is only part of the picture. We want to see our friends and family out of this city as well.
I have family in both Northland and the Waikato.
A lot of us have family and friends in other parts of the country.
Some of us just want a holiday.
And while other DHBs are lagging the border remains up. So it still affects us.
Yep, totally agree. Also a massive slap in the face to our overseas compatriots, who have done it the hardest of all.
Probably antivax, probably displayed symptoms but didn't bother doing anything about it, thinking it was a common cold...nec minut.
Worldwide majority of People who died of covid 19 was unvaccinated, 98% of those in our hospital now are unvaccinated... are people missing the obvious point here?
I can believe some of them are just fucking stupid that they are but there's definitely quite a few who understand and are too arrogant to change their initial thoughts and those who delibrately mislead people for a flex too.
Don’t worry people, we have been taking COVID seriously here in my home town of Stratford. We have sign in book things and hand turps all over the place. Sometimes we even wear masks so we should be fine
Have you stopped licking lampposts?
We keep all saliva sharing activities in the family so should slow the spread
Tracing is still extremely useful. It’s a shame not everyone is using the app.
Weeell... I remember my mate having a dream about this a few weeks ago https://imgur.com/2ug7CGJ
Are you guys from Stratford? Because if not that is a ridiculously on point dream
Nah, we're both from Auckland.
Burn them at the stake
A month ago too
Ask your mate if they can dream about Lotto
Straight to level 7.
Nah level 6 because of 6 cases
Well, I guess that mystery is now solved.
The whole DHB has been averaging 300 tests a week when I last looked
Problem is, if the people that catch it refuse to get tested, no amount of testing will help you find it.
Until they turn up in hospital.
Traffic light system is going to kick in nation wide December 1st we will be close to or at 90 percent vaccinated nationwide and the vast majority of the cites will be over 90 percent fully vaxxed.
Times up for the regions and the anti vaxers government isn't going to play nice anymore.
Dont think thats the criteria. All DHBS need to hit 90% for us to switch systems. Which is like late Jan at the current rates..
Reckon Taranaki might be added to the Auckland/Waikato lockdown areas.
The Ministry of Health say all six cases are clearly linked and there is a clear link to the current Auckland outbreak- NZHerald
Even so, theres been positive wastewater for how many days now? They wont have just been at home
> Anyone in Stratford, or any recent visitors to the town with COVID-19 related symptoms, no matter how mild, should get tested.

This could be fun given we just had the garden and arts festival on for the last week or so.
Well, at least many of the lazy asses will now rush to get vaccinated.
nah instead they will claim it's fake positive cases to get people to get vaccinated. Some of the crazies genuinely believe that..
Already happening eg @MaryAnneGrace 9 and other loonies on Twitter.
To the moon! 🚀
Were they behind the sofa? That’s where I hide my covid cases.
Real question is how does this impact the NPC semi this weekend? My glorious Stags better not get shafted!
The entire 2nd Div is getting shafted anyway, because nobody's going up
You're getting shafted either way.
Now think how Waikato feel missing out on a shield challenge when on red hot form.
Then we get given one when stuck away from home, unable to call up replacements for injuries
I feel your pain as a Wellington lions fan who only happen to get shield matches when half our team are in the ABs squad and it’s test weekend. Sad stuff really
The vaccine has killed maybe 1 person in nz the protests have already killed 3 .. so protesting is 300% more deadly than getting the vaccine ….
I believe 4 died in that crash
Very sad that the crash happened.
Given they were part of a super spreader event, not really.
No it's not, those people were advocating for 0 restrictions which in turn means people die. Why is it only sad when they did but not when 1% of the population does?
So 400% then.
Has the one death been conclusively linked to the vaccine? I didn’t think it had?
Hence why I said ‘maybe’
Gotta compare the numbers of protesters to vaccines administered too, let’s say 7000 to 7,000,000. So more like 300,000%
Yes I agree but gotta keep it simple for the crayon eaters
We should move to traffic light now.
Linked to Auckland too. Sounds very dodgy.
Surely they get a lockdown, particularly if Northland / Waikato do.
That only happens if they are mystery one's with no clear link
Northland had its highest number of cases to date today, but is going to level 2 at midnight...
Well at least they found them but they've spent a long time in the community, so this has the potential to be all over, and outside of, Taranaki.
The question I guess is will the government take a calculated gamble with this or will they move it into level 3 and take all the collective moaning that comes with it?
On the AM show this morning David Parker said there was low risk because "they'd been self isolating at home"... So they knew or strongly assumed they in fact had Covid and didn't get tested for nearly 2 weeks? My bull shit meter just blew up
Yes join us!!!!
Far out !
How did they go from 0 to 6, including 1 in hospital since 1pm
This is a highly underrated comment
Test results are being confirmed all day. If they got tested this morning the result would've only come back in the last couple hours. I think the cut off for being included in the 1pm update is 9am because that's when they confirm the numbers to report to the WHO.
Still quite a big jump in a few hours, especially if someone is sick enough to need hospital level care
> "All six cases are clearly linked and there is also a link to the Auckland outbreak which is being further investigated,"
I'm guessing they were all tested together through contact tracing and they're not 6 random, unconnected people all testing positive today (so likely 1 exposure event + household contacts).
The government has also said not every hospitalised case is in hospital because of their COVID. Some have been hospitalised for other health issues and/or as a precaution.
But yes, 6 is a big jump from 0 but we also know 1 person in a household getting infected with delta very often leads to the whole household getting infected so it's not an unexpected jump considering the context of delta and the wastewater positives.
They will only have been tested because they were already sick enough to need hospital care.
They had increasingly bad symptoms for up to ten days that they ignored without getting tested.
It got so bad that they had to go to hospital.
In hospital they got tested.
Test was positive, dhb tested the rest of their household, goes to six total cases.
LOCKDOWN TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (For the rest of the north island)
If the entire North needs to lockdown for the Taranaki cases then so does the south.
People in Taranaki can just as easily travel to Dunedin or Nelson as they can to Wellington or Gisbon.
Did you miss the briefing? Covid is here, lockdowns are decreasing. Most are vaxxed.
Oh that's right, nobody said it, but the actions are clear.
Right. So if Taranaki isn’t going into lockdown because the strategy has changed then they need to fucking let Auckland out of lockdown and out of Auckland. Or the Naki should be going into lockdown. Can’t play both games any longer.
Pretty sure that they've said that repeatedly.
No chance just yet I wouldn't think. They know exactly where these cases have come from.
build a wall around auckland to stop them getting in!
So why do we still have the Auckland border now? Covid is in all the regions closest to Auckland (except BoP by some miracle)
I was hoping for a lockdown. I'm not super keen on work right now.
Be careful what you wish for. We have been stuck in lockdown for 3 months now with no end in sight. Enjoy your freedom while you can and don't take it for granted.
Hard to claim "no end in sight" when restrictions have been continually getting eased and there's a clear path to lockdowns ending that Auckland is only a few weeks from reaching.
Not long now mate.
Eh. I've enjoyed this entire lockdown.
Well you would be a minority as alot of people I know don't enjoy having their freedoms taken away.
