eboucher30

What prompted such a journey?

goingpostalnh

I used to love going to the post office as a little kid (and I apparently still do, I guess ha!), but I thought it'd be a great way to visit parts of the state I hadn't been to before.I try to anchore each weekend trip around a hike, brewery, etc and just make a day of it. Great excuse to take the back road!

keeponkeepnonginger

Is the first one New Boston ?

goingpostalnh

It's actually Hampstead. It sounds like that design is pretty common in NH. I think I've seen at least 5 towns with nearly the exact same building design.

MooselyHarmless

Chocorua!

goingpostalnh

Awesome town and awesome post office!

goingpostalnh

I don't want to break Reddit rules or anything, but if anyone's interested in following this rando journey, I have an Instagram page logging every PO under the name: goingpostalnh

BlackOutThizz

Gave it a follow! Holderness has a pretty neat one.

goingpostalnh

Thank you! I love the Holderness area for hiking...I'm sure I will be there soon!

SugarPlumFarie

Have you been to the Hinsdale one yet? I saw on the news a few years ago it is the oldest continually open (used?) post office in the US. They have really neat brass P.O. Boxes from the early 1800's. And if I remember correctly it is not owned by the town/state/feds, so they pay a monthly fee to keep the postal part of it. Another neat one is in Pittsfield. Not much to look at on the outside, but they have interesting Art Deco Style P.O. Box that were moved to the new-ish building after the fire that took out the old building. (The brass panel of boxes survived.) Oh, not quite the same, but the Lake Winni postal boats may interests you too. (They were closed to the public because of Rona, but I think they reopened.)

goingpostalnh

So much good advice here!! Thank you so much. So, I have been to Pittsfield and really liked it (super cool little town, too!), but I haven't been to Hinsdale yet. That sounds really awesome with all the history and decor. Can't wait to go! I can't believe I didn't even know of the Lake Winni boats!! Holy cow. That sounds awesome! I'm from Dover, so this has been such a great way to learn more about my state...can't wait to check all this out! : - )

goingpostalnh

Actually. I made myself an itinerary (super nerd here) and realized that Hinsdale and a bunch of southwestern NH / Monadnocks are on the plan for tmr. I may hop over to Brattleboro, too, but I think there were several cool covered bridges and rail trails out that way as well!!

SugarPlumFarie

If you like exploring in general & will be out in Hinsdale/Brattleboro areas, you may want to Google "Madame Sherri's Castle Ruins." Really neat. A bit of it fell over a couple of weeks ago due to the storms, but still worth a visit if you are in the area & don't mind a hike.

goingpostalnh

I'll totally jot that down! Thanks for the rec.

keeponkeepnonginger

Check out Keene and Peterborough Post offices.

goingpostalnh

Both of those were so nice! Both towns were really cool, too! Well worth the trip

Trust_The_Process21

South Tamworth is comedy gold

goingpostalnh

Hokay. Just looked it up! Hahaha, that is one shfancy shack in the woods haha! Sign me up!

-cochise

Was gonna comment on that one. I think my yard shed is bigger.

goingpostalnh

Is that so?! Gotta see it...I've been to Chocorua, but didn't know there was a South Tamworth one!+

Trust_The_Process21

Yeah just head south/west towards Moultonboro on 113 when you reach Chocorua Village!

bookavalanche

Haha, I was going to recommend this one, too. It’s the best.

kayleymack

Came here to say that hahaha

Automatic-Raspberry3

Ya that first pic is like the new nh generic post office.

myfacepwnsurs

Yeah that’s what the Conway NH one looks like too

goingpostalnh

Very true! Although, as someone from the Seacoast, heading up to Conway is always fun, bc it means I'm close to the trailhead! I think I already snagged a pic of the Conway PO a little while back.

goingpostalnh

Without a doubt! Haha. I think there are at least 3 of the exact same building scattered throughout the state.

Automatic-Raspberry3

I can save you a trip to Deerfield. Looks identical.

goingpostalnh

Haha! Oh no!! Well, I will still needa hit it up to check it off the list. Sometimes (well, actually a lot of the times) the trip to the rando PO is funner than the actual PO.

Automatic-Raspberry3

West Nottingham is an old style post office on the side of a general store. And every now and the postmaster makes a crock pot lunch for anyone who stops in.

goingpostalnh

That was such a cool one! I know exactly what you're talking about. I really love those ones and wish I could see what they looked like back in the day. A bunch way up in Coös look kinda like that, too. Can't wait to visit those.

freya_of_milfgaard

Stratham’s post office is identical. Freaks me out a bit that this isn’t that one tbh.

scandlily

I thought the same!

burnsalot603

OP is gonna be disappointed when they get down here to see the post offices, Stratham is identical to that one and North Hampton's is the smallest store in a little strip mall.

CorMcGor

Remember that there is a Post Office on top of Mt. Washington!

goingpostalnh

Oh! Cannot wait for that one! That will definitely be a memorable hike and PO

saltwaste

Fun fact: Litchfield has its own zip code but it doesnt have its own post office.

goingpostalnh

Huh! That's cool haha! Yea, there seems to be some zip codes with no post office, some zip codes with multiple, and a whooole lot in strip malls

[deleted]

[удалено]

goingpostalnh

That's really cool! I think I have been to Derry's current one, but must've missed the old one. I'll need to visit next time I'm in the neighborhood!

[deleted]

[удалено]

goingpostalnh

Haha, no doubt! Those bldgs have trouble being anything other than that haha

sdemat

No shit that used to be the post office? I live in Derry and never new that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sdemat

That’s so cool. I never knew that. Granted I’ve only lived here for like 9 years.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sdemat

Wow! That’s ridiculous! Thank you for finding that pic. That’s so cool to see

Seahearn4

Raymond's is in a shopping center now but it used to be at 77 Main St. until the late 90's. It's a daycare now but the structure is mostly untouched. Might be worth your time.

goingpostalnh

Thank you for the insider scoop!! I will have to go check it out

twistedsymphony

I love the Laconia post office, though looking at your page it looks like the Franklin office is nearly identical. thats kind of neat.

goingpostalnh

Totally agree! I like the old ones where they clearly made an effort to make a cool building for the community. Dover has a cool one as well, but it's been added to and the additional is very boring. The ones in strip malls are kinda a bummer haha

kyguylal

I like it. First one looks just like my local Windham post office.

goingpostalnh

Thank you! From the comments so far, it sounds like this is the most New Hampshire Post Office design out there....I like it! Cheers from Dover!

penster1

Ya, I thought that was Windham as well

teddydrewski

Definitely windham.

sdemat

I definitely though this was Windham also. I stop at that one all the time on my way home and I live in Derry.

scarletuba

I was so sure #3 was Lebanon, but then I realized you can't see the library! Creeeeepy

goingpostalnh

Haha, so many do look alike!

CorMcGor

Remember that there is a Post Office on top of Mt. Washington!

birdingyogi0106

Wow, this is pretty interesting. How many post offices are on your list? I was checking out your Instagram and some of those POs definitely have some character. It sounds like a fun way to travel around and explore new places. I’ve only lived in NH for 2 years so this inspires me to want to get out and explore some new towns.

goingpostalnh

Oh, definitely go out and do some exploring! New Hampshire is such an amazing place to call home. Welcome!! .... I've been to a little over 100, but I think I am around (or close to) half way.

blond_nirvana

Enjoy West Nottingham when you get there. The post office is basically a shack attached to a general store.

goingpostalnh

Thank you :)

freak0429

Waiting for goffstown and Manchester to pop up

ballen1002

Walk across the street and have a beer at the Trestle when you hit Goffstown! Edit: I was thinking of the town hall. It’s a little further from the post office, but still a short walk.

goingpostalnh

I will have to check that out! Thank you for the rec!

RobynZombie

This is such a cool, random adventure!

goingpostalnh

Thank you! Definitely one of those "the journey is the destination" things!

Accomplished-Swan900

I’m currently doing the same but with Airports! Got Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, Lebanon Municipal Airport, Mount Washington Regional Airport down next Sunday is Portsmouth International Airport at Pease

goingpostalnh

Very cool! I do love flying. You'll probably see some cool Air Force plans at Pease as well. There is a USAF refueling wing based there.

veryvalentine

How do you plan your trips? I was doing something similar with the NH Beer Trail map a while ago. Lots of fun & beautiful places in this state!

goingpostalnh

Google Maps is a life saver. Normally, I start with a brewery, hike, or something else to do in a new area and I plot a path around there. You can text the map from Google straight to your phone and pull it up for the drive.

weebling

Cool way to explore the state! Have you been up to Littleton yet? It was the first time I'd seen the post office combined with the court house. Made me wonder how many others there are like it.

goingpostalnh

I've been to Littleton a couple times, but all prior to this post office thing...Definitely looking forward to another trip that way!

PabloPantuflas

DecoLaconia! The inside is also great.

goingpostalnh

Ugh, bummed I couldn't see the inside. I normally try and go around when they're closed...I feel weird taking pictures when ppl are going in and out haha

youngJZ

Plymouth is neat one

goingpostalnh

Looking forward to stopping by!

drgntwn06

Have you been to Hinsdale? Its the oldest continuously operating post office in the country. Its been in the same building since 1816.

goingpostalnh

Just went this weekend! That was a really cool one!

SaintSeven-s7

Let me know when you visit Jaffrey! You might catch me working!

goingpostalnh

I actually stopped by Jaffrey last weekend. I normally prefer to do my post office trips after hours...It feels weird to take pictures of the PO while ppl are going in and out.

SaintSeven-s7

Aww bummer. I could've stamped something for you.

SaintSeven-s7

If/when you go to Keene's PO make sure after visiting the current building to go to 34 West St. It's the old Post Office building. There's a financial advisor in the building now but you can walk in to the front and see some of the building. There is also a set of stairs to the right when you enter. I've never been down myself but it's not blocked off or anything, I just never had the time.

goingpostalnh

Thanks for the info! That sounds pretty cool!

jan_andrea

If you visit Durham, make sure you go inside to see the revisionist history 1950s era murals. Whole lotta oof in there, and the best the post office and town can do is put up a little explanatory plaque to try to lessen the yikes factor. (Though I like to imagine "cruel adversity" from the Native American point of view instead...)

goingpostalnh

Woah! No way! I have been outside Durham's PO a ton of times (I'm from Dover), but have never gone in. Sounds like it's an interesting stop

jan_andrea

I mean, it's well-done and an interesting look back in time. The message hasn't aged well, certainly, but it gives the post office more character. I used to spend a lot of time in line there, so I had time to closely examine pretty much every panel.

goingpostalnh

It can be very cool to learn from the past and see how things have changed. Thanks again for the rec!

cafeRacr

[Here's an article for a bit of a breakdown.](https://www.wbur.org/news/2017/08/25/post-office-mural-debate-nh)

goingpostalnh

Thank you for the link! Cool stuff.

whatim

Is the first one Rumney?

goingpostalnh

The first is Hampstead. What I'm finding out is that there are four or five super common desings that several towns share. I haven't made it to Rumney yet, but Hampstead and Windham both have extremely similar desings.

MeinLife

You came to visit Hampstead and missed the glorious East Hampstead PO? For shame. That one is in a plaza :D

_oncomingstorm

Love me some Cosmos!

penster1

So is Hudson's. Not much to look at. But there may be a Spirit Halloween opening up there soon

goingpostalnh

Haha, I have to admit, I visited East Hampstead a while ago without realizing there was a Hampstead PO. Doh! Although, there are more than a few in random stip malls....East Kingston, Pelham, etc etc.

whatim

The old Rumney post office shared a building with a cute little country store. The current one is pretty similar to that design.

goingpostalnh

Looking forward to checking it out! Harrisville was a similar hiden gem as far as the small little old timey country store + post office.

wakkywizard69

Harrisville general store rules!

goingpostalnh

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!! :-) That was such a great spot. I sat there and had some great coffee and chatted with the grumpy old men...so much fun!

glop1701

Rumney used to be in the general store in town now a little box on 25

Orang3Lazaru5

Meredith has my favorite NH post office

goingpostalnh

I've been to Meredith a ton going to Lake Winni, but hadn't checked that PO off the list get! Can't wait to check it out! :)

Orang3Lazaru5

It’s behind the Inn at Mill Falls! It’s very quaint

Encyclofreak

This has always been one my goals, visit every town in NH!

goingpostalnh

You should do it! It has been so much fun!

nothing_c1ever

Thank you so much for this post! I grew up in Milton Mills. My aunt was the post master there. When I was a kid I use to help her sort the mail and put them in the old PO boxes. I haven't been back there in years

goingpostalnh

No way! That is so cool. I just feel that the post offices of everyone's home town hold such meaning. I always try to remember that each time I see a new place

Notdiamonds

Portsmouth maybe next

goingpostalnh

Done and done :) That one was pretty close to home for me.

donkeyduplex

FYI Litchfield does not have a post office, nor is it worth the visit.

goingpostalnh

It's so random which towns do and don't have post offices. Kensington doesn't have one either. Haha, poor Litchfield...I'm sure there's gotta be a hike or pond or something nearby!

veryvalentine

Nottingham makes up for it with two!

goingpostalnh

Haha, very much so! Those ones were very cool...especially West Nottingham

kayleymack

It has Darrah pond I spent so much time there when it had a skatepark

goingpostalnh

That's awesome!

donkeyduplex

My wife was from Litchfield, so I already took the best thing away from town :)

goingpostalnh

Dawww, well that's adorable!

-Cow47-

I did this with my dad when I was a kid! A great time, for reasons I can't identify

goingpostalnh

So cool! I bet it made for some great stories!

tmcuthbert

East Derry has a little hole in the wall post office, a few miles from the Hampstead one.

goingpostalnh

I saw that one! Super little old bldg. I like the ones like that with some character.

GraniteStayte

Great pics! I love visiting post offices in small towns.

goingpostalnh

Thank you! Fun isn't it :)

Odd_Jeweler_7856

Been to Pittsfield yet?

goingpostalnh

I have! That was actually one of my favorite ones so far...reminded me kinda of an English cottage. Very cool, very quaint!

twistedsymphony

So what are you going to do after all the post offices? Libraries? Town Halls? Fire Stations? Police Stations?

goingpostalnh

Haha, I dunno. This has been a great excuse to find new hikes and breweries...I suppose I'll have to revisit any favorites!
