KEMBAtheMETEOR

That's a unique one lol he's also going to be the first player since McCoy McLemore in 1963 to wear jersey #71

awrf

I hope his nickname was Double Mac

Pandamonium98

McDouble flows better IMO

cman1098

And if he was a good player he might have gotten a McDouble Double every once in a while.

Harden-Soul

A McDouble Triple Double

ScatpornCrothers

According to basketball reference it was Mac. His dumbass teammates didn't know what they had!

redshoediary

What happened to 96?

AnotherUnfunnyName

Local fans from Peine-Ost (Braunschweig) realised it after some newspapers and websites published some articles about it and seemed to outvote the guys trying to "troll" him, it lost by something like 1.3%. Either that or it was rigged.../s.

redshoediary

Smartmatic has entered the chat

viking_machina

I’m a big fan of players taking unique numbers. Taking 23 is boring, your never going to enter the same stratosphere of Jordan and Bron, may as well take something people will remember you by and on top of that you get it on pretty much every team you go to, Jae Crowder always getting that 99 wherever he goes.

Statalyzer

Seriously, pretty much everybody seems to have single digits, 20-25, or 30-34.

ElonMuskIs_God

A part of the reason why is because the NCAA. There, you can only wear 0-5, 10-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45 and 50-55. A lot of players just take their college numbers and transition it to the NBA. I have a pretty big jersey collection (about 40) of moderns and throwbacks, of all my jerseys, only 4 of them have a number outside that range. Those include one #6, two #7s and a #16.

[deleted]

What a weird rule, what's the reason behind it? Also is 00 allowed in NCAA?

mrxlegendary

Something to do with the refs I believe. they call a player's number and use their hands for the digits, so five fingers, each hand representing one of the digits.

Eternityislong

They should just hire refs with more fingers to cover more numbers. Maybe 9 on each hand would be hard, but surely we could extend the range to like 67.

mrxlegendary

I like the idea

Statalyzer

Or you just hold the hand upright to indicate 1-5, and sideways to indicate 6-9.

GunnerSensei

00 is allowed in college.

qldboi

But you can’t have 0 if you have a 00

530nairb

College refs when signaling the scorers table, first number: one hand, second number: other hand. This means you can only use digits less than a five. NBA refs will use both hands for one digits then flip their hands for the second digit. IDK why, sometimes I’ll even see them do 2 digits numbers with one hand like in college. Differs from ref to ref. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal because they yell out the calls pretty clear.

Statalyzer

True - it's just interesting to me that almost everyone who gets the NBA and adds a number ending in 6, 7, 8, or 9 picks only 6, 7, 8, or 9, or occasionally a 16 or 17. You almost never see a 27 or 48, much less a 60 or 88.

cowpandas

Shoutout to the best 77 to ever play the game.

bagfka

Tbf that’s only cause he couldn’t get 7

34thGiraffe

My only problem with this is that I think bigs should have big numbers. AD looks dumb af with #3

gustriandos

what is with Celtics players having these ridiculous numbers. I know a lot of low numbers are retired but not this many. Fournier wore 94, teague wore 55, tacko wore 99, waters was 51, etc

KEMBAtheMETEOR

The Celtics actually have the following jerseys retired: 00, 1-3, 6, 10, 14-19, 21-25, 31-35 Add in KG's #5, and all the current Celtics, that covers most of the jersey numbers players want to wear. so we're going to see a lot of wacky jerseys out of them.

Juniper41

yep, currently the only numbers available for new players are: 4, 8, 9 (possibly retired soon for Rondo), 13, 27-30, 37-39, 43, 47+ The only "normal" numbers are 4, 8, 9, 13, 30 and 50. If Jabari Parker is released then #20 becomes available. IMO Richardson will take #20, he wore it in high school. Khris Dunn probably takes 30 as he's been #32 most of his career. Enes Kanter has always worn 11 or 0 so it's a bit tricky but probably takes #13 or maybe 9?

snappy173

>possibly retired soon for Rondo doubtful. brad wanamaker wore #9 for a couple seasons. i think romeo lankford is gonna switch to #9 this year (he wore it in summer league)

Caboclo-Is2yearsAway

Just because players wore the number after him doesn't just take away the possibility of jersey retirement though, right?

swkkkkkk

Probably does

WavyKirk

Depends on the org.

Outlandish69Melon

Didnt Dunn get traded away?

JoJonesy

Kris Dunn's gone. Juancho trade went through a couple days ago

Cruyffiaan

Why is KG not retired

[deleted]

[удалено]

rmeq

i don’t get it, i don’t think that was a joke

azizinator25

I don't think he's saying the Celtics are going to retire the numbers of all of the current players. He's just saying that for as long as like, Romeo Langford is on the team, the number 45 is not really available for another player to wear.

b1oconnor

Fournier wore 94 in Denver, has to do with Paris

sercialinho

To build on that -- 94 is the number of the Val de Marne Department on the outskirts/in the suburbs of Paris, where Evan was born. There are 101 departments in France, 95 of which are in Metropolitan France, and they are numbered 1-95 alphabetically, with Ain=1 and Val d'Oise=95.

NABAKLAB

Wow. Is P.C.C one of those? (There's a song by band 'Pond' about it)

sercialinho

Don’t think so. Looked at the lyrics and the only geographical feature mentioned is Pigalle, a neighbourhood of Paris proper (9e arr) with a less-than-great reputation.

nombernine

Pigalle has a bad reputation? Have things changed drastically in the last three years?

sercialinho

It’s more how it was thought of 20-30 years ago than 3 years ago. The red light district underwent some gentrification recently.

Jordanwolf98

Tacko wearing 99 wasn’t that bad to me lmao

redshoediary

99 for the 99 names of Allah

Caboclo-Is2yearsAway

Well I don't think he considered any of the numbers to be "bad", just odd. Plus it may not seem so odd after seeing Crowder rock that number for years.

d0ubledagrind

Well like you said they have a lot of lower numbers retired but just speaking for Dennis he flipped his regular number 17 to 71. But damn 71 is a ugly jersey number lmao.

_3_8_

Tbh 71 is cool. Although I have a thing for high numbers ending in 1

PHI41NE33

Fans also voted Peyton Hillis to the Madden cover. Fans should not get a say in anything.

_thisisvincent

or fans **should** get a say in everything... [Kodiak, Alaska Welcomes Pitbull](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NrllHwHq7w)

MotoMkali

He is Mr Worldwide after all

CaskJeeves

I don't know, online fan voting gave us some great trolls like [4th-line goon John Scott getting voted into the NHL All-Star game](https://www.si.com/nhl/2016/01/19/john-scott-nhl-all-star-game-fan-vote-trade-explainer), [the entire New York Mets stadium getting RickRolled](https://abcnews.go.com/Sports/story?id=4628658&page=1), and of course the leading entry in the poll to name the new flavor of Mountain Dew, ["Hitler Did Nothing Wrong"](https://newsfeed.time.com/2012/08/14/mountain-dews-dub-the-dew-online-poll-goes-horribly-wrong/)

WaterTesterNSFW

I thought the fans would vote for his number to be gushing grannies

FakedWorld

Nah Kyrie already set that legacy. Would have to be Fapple.

BahLo-

i find this so interesting, why dont NBA players like high jersey numbers, its super common in the NHL. Honestly most higher numbers are cool ie 91, 81, 71, 87, 97, etc. higher > lower

KillianDrake

refs have to signal jersey numbers to the statkeeper with their fingers - so they want to limit jersey numbers from 56-99 to reduce confusion and amount of two-hand signalling required. to be honest, surprised league hasn't already rejected 71 for someone of schroeder's low status

Dakooder

Well, if a player chooses 99, they better be ready to be the best there ever will be.

BeefyHamstrings

“Also the first Black point guard in their history” -jay Williams

redshoediary

Jay Williams would've been the first black Celtic point guard but he got cut.

Ambitious_Ad5335

Should’ve choose number 84. 😂😂😂

OsamaBinHarden2

Was an option. Fans voted otherwise.

toothpaste-hearts

How did this not win.

rod333

Should be 78 84M-6M = 78M left on the table lol

tberal

This is a fucking Brazil vs Germany reference isn't it? Nowhere is safe.

lopea182

Should have been 69 smh. Fan voters what you doin?

BLIZZARDFACE

I don;t think the league allows it. Either Artest or Rodman wanted it but were told no.

innerparty45

Wow, lame as fuck.

Baatun88

Americans are so weird.

lightninggninthgil

Are you serious? If that's real, that's absolutely ridiculous, it's a number.

ConfusedAlgernon

Yes but it's the sex number. Can't have that. The only one who has legitimate claim to wear 69 this year would be someone on the Lakers, given that's the birth year of half their squad.

nice___bot

Nice!

LrryBirdsStache

That's probably what he wanted and did it this way to say the fans did it.

lopea182

Reverse psychology, nice! Kinda like how he talked himself out of 4 years $84million

LrryBirdsStache

Bingo

toKenblaKKman

Silver won't allow

nice___bot

Nice!

illcrypto

So why did fans vote for #71?

mahcus36

Reverse 17

AnotherUnfunnyName

Both the fact that is the reserve 17 and most fans from his hometown Braunschweig wanted to avoid the 96, which is a linked to their main rival soccer club, Hannover 96.

Jpgphotos

Should be 84.....

DiscreteBee

Why is it so uncommon to take the high numbers?

viking_machina

Most basketball from high school down only have like 20 something jerseys so they all have low numbers on them

POK3MONFANATIC79

why u no 69

nice___bot

Nice!

xKalisx

Missed opportunity here, # 84 would have such a good number assignment.

98ke

Naw this is horrendous man. Him & Luka wearing Left Tackles is such a hot pack of ass.

Common-Ad5446

Luka looks fly as fuck in 77

BiscuitsforMark

Somehow number's still retired

JesusDiedforChipotle

How did 69 not win?

nice___bot

Nice!

screwhead1

They couldn't vote for 69? Very disappointing.

ElonMuskIs_God

Pretty sure silver wouldn't allow it

Quirky_Ad_2164

They should have picked 5.9, I mean 59
