Since my last post, I've thought up a new conversation topic: **parts of the canon that don't come up in fanfiction very often.** Earlier today, someone on SpaceBattles said there are hardly any Pokémon fanfics based on non-GameCube spinoffs. I replied that the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fanfic scene is huge, then immediately realised that it's mostly separate from the wider fandom. Similarly, a lot of MLP fanfic authors ignore the comics and other side-media. One of the Choices entries has a throwaway mention of Zebrica instead of Farasi, and the author of another one I haven't read yet admitted that they ignored the entire Farasian Shores arc when writing their zebras because they didn't like it. {Heart of the Forest} feels so novel because it has comic characters in supporting roles, specifically the Everfree deer; the rare times comic characters appear in fics, they're usually the focus.

I feel like the comics are hit by a one-two punch when it comes to representation in fanfics: - First, audience knowledge. As the years went on, comic readership fell off *far* faster than show watching; so while early events - say, vaguely, up to "Reflections" or "The Siege of the Crystal Empire" - events are widely known, but after that knowledge falls off far, far faster. - Second, the comic tends to present open-and-shut stories which are harder to follow on to. In the perfect balance of giving you enough material to latch on to but not so much as to prevent you from expanding further, the comics tend to lean a bit more towards the latter. Characters' backstories are explained in full, development arcs are finished, and of course no big world changes that could impact the show are permitted. There's also an arguable point that it's simply *hard* to follow on a lot of the comics arcs because they're so... well, mediocre. That's a lot more open to personal interpretation, obviously, but I would point out that I think the most common *by far* comics-derived fanfics are fixfics of unpopular storylines (particularly the infamous Anon-A-Miss storyline). The net result is that most constructive references are just that - references that allow you a wink and a nudge while preserving your own room to build your own story.

Honestly, I like the comics more for the interesting concepts they present than the actual stories. Convocation of the Creatures' main conflict has a predictable ending, but it's so nice seeing all these cultures interacting even more than in the show, and I love the archivists.

[](/twistare) This story is on the queue: [](/sp) * { [The Mare Who Once Lived on the Moon](https://www.fimfiction.net/story/247031/) }: I remain at the start of the tenth chapter (“The Guardian who Loves”), which amounts to 54,113 words out of 143,130 words total. This month has a programming event, so that takes priority.

I started Choices when I was regaining my passion for MLP fics... only to lose it again almost immediately. I fell behind the entries as they were coming out, and now I'm averaging about one chapter per day.

The most recent stories I've added that aren't just blatant clop are Lyra's Confession and Bon Bon's Acceptance. They are both still mature and have clop, but the relationships and romance is very well done. I am kind of hoping for a short follow up at some point, but considering the story was finished in 2015 I'm not holding my breath. I'm getting some fanfic fatigue in my genre of choice. Gone through the top rated stories already and sifting through stories with much lower likes. It's rough going. {Beginning Anew} is one that really disappointed me. It started off fairly well. It's a spin off and frankly I'm not touching the original series with a 10' pole, but most of it doesn't play too much importance to the main characters of the spin off. Sadly, at one point the main mare confesses something from her past to the human lead. Something happens and his viewpoint and perspective seem to shift rapidly. Then things he was reluctant about he's not only okay with but pretty enthusiastic. At one point multiple people are saying he needs to talk to Cadance before making any major life choice. He then proceed to make quite a few very major life choices back to back without talking to Cadance. It felt rushed and nonsensical. It's so disappointing that I was enjoying the story up to that point and then it just felt like it shifted into 5th gear and slammed straight into a wall.

Well. *That's* an author name I never thought I'd run into in the wild. So, just so you know: That particular author is well-known for... well, are you familiar with the term "Magical Realming" as it refers to writers/game creators/etc? Because they're *really* known for that. A lot. Badly. In ways I won't describe here.

My favourite MLP fanfiction is scribbler production’s audio series Vampiolence. I haven’t listened to it in a while but I remember it being really good
