Could you imagine the uproar if we tried to remove "under god" from the pledge of allegiance? Just another thing for them to feel "persecuted" for even though it wasn't added until the 1950's because of anti-communist propaganda.
I watched a Nazi rally that was held in the states before the war on YouTube the other day and they said the pledge. I had forgotten that it was added, and it felt strange that everyone did the thing I do when forced to say the pledge and left “under god” out.
Fun Fact! In God We Trust only started appearing on currency in 1955! Also Under God was only added to the Pledge in 1954!
To paraphrase Justice Alito, praising God in government functions is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and traditions.
Edit: Looks like I’m wrong about the money! In 1955 Eisenhower passed a law adopting In God We Trust as the official motto and mandated it on currency, but apparently this was just codifying something that was already being done.
The Pledge part is true though! I’ve had it confirmed by actual super old people!
We HAD to take God out of school. He was WAY out of line. Waving his penis at the lunch ladies, eating glue. Once he even left the unopened milk carton from his lunch in his locker... over an entire weekend. It took days for that smell to dissipate. That kid needs to be on ritalin or something. Massive ADHD case with ZERO accountability from the parents.

Jesus Christ, Dee. I mean, how are you planning on becoming an actress at all?
You can't make people laugh, 'cause you're not funny, you can't cry on command. What CAN you do?
And as a Christian, I'm in the same boat.
It's the right wing super religious hypocritical loonies that mean I rarely bring up my religion because they'll assume I'm one of those people.
It's the extremes on either end that make the headlines, and us ordinary folk who are stuck silently doing our day to day lives quite happily. *Sigh*
Besides the extremists, the only religious people that I have a problem with are the ones who use it to grift for money, or the people that use it as a constant crutch, thinking it will solve/excuse all their problems instead of actually doing something themselves.
Everyone else, I'm pretty much cool with. It's not like science can answer all of life's questions and mysteries either, I understand people seeking more than our mere "mortal" knowledge.
As a christian militant atheists like the kind from r/atheism make me idk… sad/upset? Like there’s this soap opera based on bible tales (yes it exists lol) and you get that comment mocking what it’s about and the people watching it, or also a video I remember of a grandpa with Alzheimer’s filled with wholesome comments and there was a comment saying they hoped God stay with him, to which someone replied making fun of them for mentioning sky daddy.
And there’s always a comment war after.
Like… unless someone’s being mean, it doesn’t matter what you believe in.
Crazy shit is before 1957 no US currency had “in god we trust” on it.
This country is built upon revisionist history.
Edit: to clarify, in 1913 we created the centralized banking system called the federal reserve, which was the first federal issue of paper currency (dollar, five dollar, etc.) Before the federal reserve bank existed *some* of the designs for coins had “in god we trust” since the late 19th century.
Not entirely. This first stared cropping up in the Civil War when sides started saying God would have been on their side. They would then start putting “In God We Trust” on their currency. It wasn’t official, but the 50s were not the first use of it.
Not actually true. Paper currency didn't have it until 1957 but it started appearing on coins during the Civil War and largely stayed there.
Which of course does not make it at all appropriate, and it was still political (just trying to indicate that Union was not any less Christian than the Confederacy, instead of trying to make the US out as better than the godless Soviets)
Yep, I count the money in a casino and our count machines reject these. Not really mildly interesting, but mildly annoying. Also more common than you’d think.
Allow me to ask, at what point of defacing the money does it still counts as legal tender? And at what point does your machine fail?
Also, since you mentioned it is common, what is the most interesting defacing you came across?
Casino’s don’t really care if there’s writing or stamps on them, the bill validators in the slot machines will still accept and process them no problem. Our count machines in the back are… temperamental. So as the machine is attempting to read the bill, it won’t be able to and it will send it into a rejection pocket. We then have to manually input the currency amounts for those bills. Now, when we send deposits to the bank it sounds like they go through bills and get rid of these as they find them.
We see a lot, most common are ones like this, Trump 2020 on $20 bills, and Where’s George advertisements. Also what we call the religious wars.. people either blacking out the “in god we trust” or circling, highlighting, or underlining it.
Weirdest one I’ve seen so far was one that someone wrote an address on it and said they’d been kidnapped or something. It was actually kinda unsettling and we turned it in to the local police department, just in case.
I would think probably when the denomination is no longer clear. IIRC there's nothing specifically illegal about putting a stamp like this onto a bill, it would become illegal were one to put 0s after the 1s to try and pass it off as a $10
This. Also if the serial number isn’t legible, and more than 50% of the bill must be present (including the serial number). Where I’m at I don’t typically run into these issues though since the bills have already gone through one checkpoint via the slot machine. It’s very hard to fool those, but people do try.
Aww the fucking stickers on gas is driving me crazy. It's on every pump in my area now. What kind of sad sap just goes around to try and "pwn" the rival party with a stupid sticker. It's shocking how many people in my area don't know that there is more to life than being fully consumed by politics.

Politics in this country is all corrupt and full of scammers and these idiots idolize them while the politicians are getting rich doing nothing for them.
It's grotesque
> It's shocking how many people in my area don't know that there is more to life than being fully consumed by politics.
I'm just sitting over here wondering if I should go into the sticker business.
I think it's hilarious. The people who out these stickers on didn't spend two minutes to read why has prices are so high. Hint, it has nothing to do with the government and everything to do with oil companies trying to squeeze out as much money as they can short term because demand has dropped substantially and will continue to fall.
I mean technically it is because of *other* governments who *are* oil companies. Though you are right about it being artificial scarcity for one last hoorah before oil is no longer a major fuel (it will still be massively used for plastics and other stuff other than fuels though).
Four points you say?
Well that’s gotta be [Time Cube](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Cube) surely.
(I used to read that page in college, truely like staring into a white hot sun of raging insanity)
Like that guy who built his own rocket. Sadly he died in it eventually, but before then he fleeced flat earthers for all they were worth to pursue his dreams
Yeah honestly, spherical or flat, doesn't really matter to me cause if it actually is flat then nothing is going to change since we're clearly doing fine without knowing it anyway lol
I mean.... I was a fully cringe militant Anti-Theist in my teenage years. I'm still an Atheist, and I still have a bookshelf full of Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Bertrand Russell, Ibn Warraq, etc. But this is some mega cringe neckbeard shit, lmao.

The only thing that should be on money is e pluribus unum. The God thing was added when Abraham Lincoln was pestered by a bunch of ministers to add it to money, so it he agreed to get them off of his back. He was busy with more important things like a Civil War. Teddy Roosevelt hated it, and had it removed from 1907 gold coinage, but there was an uproar about it, so we've been stuck with it ever since. With the irony totally going over peoples heads about God and money. But this is America. The hypocrite capital of the world, where churches don't pay taxes with their God money.

I think someone who truly believed in reason would feel more secure than requiring to challenge a motto on a piece of paper by stamping over it. It seems unnecessarily confrontational and fragile. It doesn't seem the hallmark of a very reasonable person.
God in the context of the dollar is literally reason. In this context God is"the light, the way." In koine the word of God and God himself is logos, logic, order, and reason. I'm agnostic, definitely not Christian, and this petty, angry, atheist bs is just a bad look. Yall are giving us a bad name because this petty bs is everywhere.
But do we?
No not really
Be a lot cooler cool if we did.
Maybe if we quit putting a phrase in direct contradiction on our money and government seals that we can begin to start making progress.
I'm envious of your optimism!
Could you imagine the uproar if we tried to remove "under god" from the pledge of allegiance? Just another thing for them to feel "persecuted" for even though it wasn't added until the 1950's because of anti-communist propaganda.
Or just remove the constant reciting of the pledge entirely - it looks extremely cultish.
Indoctrination nation
It **is** extremely cult-like.
People shit their pants with rage when you remind them it wasn't there in the original.
All references to God should be removed from all government. I am all for freedom of religion but also freedom from religion.
Actual separation of church and state P l e a s e
Considering that wasn't added til the 50s I believe
I watched a Nazi rally that was held in the states before the war on YouTube the other day and they said the pledge. I had forgotten that it was added, and it felt strange that everyone did the thing I do when forced to say the pledge and left “under god” out.

But don't you know the reason we have school shootings and trans people and abortions is because we took God out of schools?
Isn’t it interesting that the moment we took god out of school, black people started existing? Answer that liblerals.
Of course! We had a shit ton of school shootings prior to 1954, before “under God” was added to the Pledge. Duh!
We HAD to take God out of school. He was WAY out of line. Waving his penis at the lunch ladies, eating glue. I just like to wear red hats… my name has no hidden meaning
That's exactly what a red hatter would say!
Redditors for eleven days I feel like this is not their first rodeo.
That's what I suspected. There's an old Talaxian expression: "When the road before you splits in two, take the third path." - Neelix
Wouldnt the third path be the one you just came from? Seems like kind of a *backwards* idea

How big of a crucifix?
We are an Irish Catholic bar and therefore a giant wooden crucifix is a celebration of our heritage.
Well, maybe if it’s in the back. No blood though, right?
He's gotta be drenched in blood, I mean covered in blood. That's the whole point; you need to see the wounds of Christ, he needs to be ravaged

From the wallet of Neil DeGrasse Tyson
I think someone who truly believed in reason would feel more secure than requiring to challenge a motto on a piece of paper by stamping over it. It seems unnecessarily confrontational and fragile. It doesn't seem the hallmark of a very reasonable person.
