Timespinner is a nice easy MV. It looks like a PS1 game (in a good way) and is definitely worth a look if you like SoTN

Lochltar

Oh I for got about this one. Waiting for a sale for this one.

RetroPilky

How did you beat HK and FIST but you’re having trouble with The Messenger? No boss in that game is as hard as any of the later game bosses in those

Lochltar

Well I did and I can't beat this fucker how hard I tried.

RetroPilky

There’s a video someone posted here that might help you. Just look at strategies and eventually you’ll get him.

B_A_Peach

"Beating" Hollow Knight is kind of easy (11% of players have the gold trophy). But the alternate endings get much more difficult. Ascending the Pantheon of Hallownest was harder than anything I've ever done in a game.

BarryBadgernath1

Pantheon of hollowness is definitely in my top 5-6 hardest .... and most of the others that make that list are gimped runs on other games... self imposed challenges and whatnot.... getting the first. 2 (3?) ending in hollow knight was honestly really easy for me (though it took me forever, playing blind and being extremely thorough) none of the base game bosses gave me much trouble.... some of the pantheon stuff though, that was a real challenge

RetroPilky

Beating Hollow Knight isn’t what I’d consider easy, most popular games have higher completion percentages overall. But it’s definitely not an easier game to beat than The Messenger, and imo 75% of the bosses in HK are harder than this particular boss OP is having trouble with. But everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to gaming so this one just seems to have him stumped at the moment. This happened to me with Vicar Amelia in Bloodborne, I almost rage quit because of her, glad I didn’t though

Cactoir

I don't know what you mean. No boss in The Messenger is harder than a bunch of bosses in HK, so maybe you got the demon general wrong? See a playthrough, take some ideas how to approach the boss and continue this game cause it's a pity to be triggered by a boss fight.

Lochltar

I just died around 50 times to the goddam thing. I beat every HK bosses, Blasphemous bosses, F.I.S.T Bosses, Ender Lilies etc...and NEVER in all of them a boss was cheap as him. Also YouTube comments on the boss are also self-explanatory.

BarryBadgernath1

You beat EVERY ? Hollow knight boss ... and this dudes giving you that much trouble ??

Lochltar

Not anymore as I beat it today...straight after I answered the post earlier. Lol

BarryBadgernath1

Right on man.... *high five* .... I wasn't trying to call you a liar or anything,,, just your set of circumstances sound..... less than average ... as far as people's difficulties with the bosses in all the games you mentioned..... didn't mean anything by it

juazlee

Maybe give it a week's break and try again. I went through something similar with Sekiro in a certain boss. I think to the tune of 45-60 deaths, threw the controller away and gave up on it for 2 weeks. Came back after 2 weeks, boss down on second try.

Lochltar

I FUCKING BEAT HIM !!! ARGHHHHHH. ... ... ... Took me 50-70 attempts at leasts but I did...thanks fuck.

juazlee

Hahahaha that's awesome :D congrats!

B_A_Peach

Such a great feeling of accomplishment when you really have to work for it. Nice job.

Lochltar

Indeed. I completely agree with that statement.

Dm9982

Monster Sanctuary is a great MV (but with turn based battles) and I found it addictive and relaxing. Astalon is another great one that isn’t super hard or anything, has multiple chars that you can swap between for different play styles - the mage plays like mega man.

Lochltar

I heard about Astalon everywhere. Wi have a look.

RLdude92

I would recommend Monster Sanctuary aswell, if you like turn based combat. I've given up on the "souls-like" hard as hell metroidvania games. I dont have alot of free time anymore, so suffering through the same boss 50 times, pulling my hair out is just not fun at all. Monster Sanctuary is challenging, but in a fun way and you could always avoid fights if you just want to explore the world. The world has tons of areas to explore and secrets to find. Im 20 hours in and still have alot to explore, I just dont want it to end cause im enjoying it so much. I also want to recommend Yoku's Island Express. It's a fantastic metroidvania with pin ball gameplay.

Lochltar

Ok will check this out.

nicholaslegion

Astalon is incredible, go for it!

Ericthegreat777

Keep at the messenger is a great game, you'll get it.

Lochltar

Well it was until this fucker. I cannot pass the last phase of it. If at least he had less life...perhaps I would have a chance but noooooo he's a bullet sponge on top of that.

Ericthegreat777

You'll get it, don't give up!

trevlyn7

Yes this dont give up on it. Watch some videos no shame in that. Youll be pleased that you finished it!

DOS-76

Ori and the Blind Forest. No bosses. Just movement and exploration, and the occasional critter to zap while you are vibing on the score.

Lochltar

I wish but unfortunately I am on PS5 and it's not on PS5 *sad noises.

Shiny-And-New

Yokus Island is a nice break from combat driven metroidvanias

AlexXLR

The Steamworld Dig games are great, especially 2. Nothing too frustrating just smooth loops of exploring, selling, upgrading and back down into the exploring! You can skip 1 altogether, 2 is better in every way.

Lochltar

Played the first one and had a blast. Good call.

HorizonZeroDawn2

If you enjoyed SteamWorld Dig you will love the sequel. It’s so well designed.

FistyDollars

Weirdly I liked 1 more, it had some randomized elements that 2 didn't keep around. 1 felt like you were actually exploring and finding resources, but 2 felt too curated and theme parkish, if that makes sense.

Ulfpam

That boss is totally OK but can be frustrating when shit goes wrong. I would wanna recommend these games if you haven't played them: **Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night**. It's meditative to me and doesn't get overly hard at any point. Besides you can grind for levelling up and become overpowered. **Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom**. A cheerful, colourful and wonderful metroidvania much in the vein of Wonder Boy, of course. There are some puzzles that are like "eeeh ok?" but overall it's simply fantastic with a good game length.

Lochltar

Doesn't MBCK is extremely hard ? Like the volcano passage orr something like that ?

Ulfpam

The volcano passage is the hardest area but it's not "extremely hard". But there are some strange puzzles in it that might get you killed a few times.

Obtusely_Acute

Monster Boy has some challenge involved, but the challenge is puzzle-oriented not due to tough-as-nails rage-inducing bosses/combat. If you get stuck in Monster Boy, a guide would generally help you out pretty easily. I'd say the puzzles may make you scratch your head a bit, but they aren't extreme (well there is one truly extreme puzzle, but it's really an Easter egg and 100% optional). I say that as someone who gave up on La-Mulana but I got through the Monster Boy Volcano without resorting to any guides.

Lochltar

Ok thanks.

chunes

Ender Lilies was like 3 times harder than The Messenger for me. It's wild how different people find different games to be difficult.

boppagibbz

If you can get by the last boss on FIST and blasphemous, and by the hollow knight bosses, you can get by demon general. Don’t give up that far in. We have faith in you. Kick his ass

UncleObli

Guacamelee is pretty chill. Sundered has a lower than average difficulty too especially if you accept every power up. EDIT: I realized that if you don't already know about Sundered my comment might be criptic. Sundered entire idea is that you can accept the powers loaned to you by an Elder God to escape the maze you are trapped in or to resist its evil influence. If you accept the run is much easier.

Lochltar

I quite like that. Will have a look. I missed the sale for Guacamelee. Will have to wait for another one.

UncleObli

Guacamelee is fun. It never quite felt right to me but it surely deserves a try. Sundered is one of my favorite metroidvanias. Nothing amazing about it but the fast paced combat and the weird blend of sci fi and lovercraftian cosmic horror struck a chord.

Obtusely_Acute

FYI, Sundered also has selectable difficulty levels. It's one of my favorites, and I highly recommend playing on "Easy", which I would describe as not overly-easy and still fun (you also don't miss out on any content playing on easy).

nessfalco

Demon General? Every attack is telegraphed and avoidable. If you're having trouble beating him, then you don't have movement in the game down yet. It can take practice to get right, but it certainly isn't unfair. [Here's someone beating it without doing anything particularly crazy.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGFchvPVygs)

Lochltar

I already watched few times and he's been lucky. I cannot explain but he seems to fight a demon with low health. Mine is getting bright red flashy without any sign of making the red flash increasing its frequency. Whatever how many time I hit him. Seriously I am going to delete this crap. I am fucking far to disappointed at rhis point. Another £15 going to the bin. Nice one. If a of you can beat it...good for you. Time to move on for me and give up on Metroidvania for good. I fucking hate this kind of spike difficulty have no more time for it. It ruined the game for me plain and simple. And this shit is getting far to omnipresent in every Metroidvania.

PedroMustDie

very average retro boss design. 2 tries at most, specially when at this point, the hook/pogo is second nature to the player

n3kr0n

Had to look the boss up since it has been a while and I really dont get your hate here. It wasn't that bad, a few cheap moments if you are unlucky but that doesnt justify this level of frustration :D

Lochltar

>a few cheap moments Really ?! The guy is a bullet sponge. The fire blade is random, you can't even avoid his 100% of the time since the rope needs recovery. All the bosses prior were hard but very fair but this one ?! Nahh...I will ruin rhe fun you had until now.

TheCriticalThinker0

On the fire blade you have to run to the far side of the screen and then jump OVER it when it gets low enough to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGFchvPVygs

T0NYDARK0

The Alwa’s games are pretty easy and chill. Great puzzles and exploration.

Jamesferdola

If you like SotN, I would absolutely recommend either Aria of Sorrow or Harmony of Dissonance, both excellent sequels and at least right now as I’m playing through them, nice relaxing gameplay with a good story.

Lochltar

Finished both already and they're perfect indeed.

IrascibleOcelot

Not sure if it’s on PS5, but I really enjoy Iconoclasts. Some of the mechanics are unintuitive, but most of the bosses aren’t terribly hard once you figure out the gimmick.

Lochltar

Finished it and loved it.

Kohntarkosz1001

Really? I mean it's really not hard but I guess everyone's different. The only time I wanted to destroy my controller was during a race with certain ninja in the Picnic Panic DLC, that is actually a little cheap on the player.

CzarTyr

The messenger is one of the easiest games I’ve played so I’m confused which boss this is I’m sorry. Aeterna Noctis imo blows all these games away but it’s way way way way way harder

Lochltar

The platforming is easy yes...the demon general boss is not faaaar from it.

CzarTyr

I don’t wanna say he sucks but this boss was trivial from what I remember

Ruined_Oculi

Castlevania series is this for me

PauleAgave95

Come on man, don’t give up ! I am not the best gamer but I finished the messenger and so do you !!!

Lochltar

Beat it today.

jojoflames900

Whats funny is sometimes it's not that the boss is hard. Is thst sometimes the boss is like a puzzle, once you figure out how to hit em it's not so hard. I didn't have any issue with the messenger, it was pretty easy for me. I'd say the final boss of axiom verge is not good because of how you can barely avoid getting hit lol.

hanleyb1

Yokus Island Express, Guacamelee 1 and 2, Steamworld Dig 2, and Gato Roboto

wasteofleshntime

Yeah it does have some crazy difficulty spikes in certain places and if I wasn't having so much fun with it I probably would have given up too. But I managed to push through those few bad moments. I'm all for someone giving up on something if they just aren't having fun with the level of stuff it throws at you. Maybe take a break and go back to it later, might end up clicking

MRKSRKSSN

Funny enough, I am also playing The Messenger and I didn't have much trouble with the demon boss. I think I got him on the fifth attempt. The dragon boss before him though was hard for me! The last phase when he removes almost all of the ground and shoots fireballs at you - that had me struggling! I hope you kept playing the game though. It opens up a lot after the demon boss and goes from "action platformer" to "metroidvania". All the areas are available, you get a world map and start exploring the world and it's not very hard - no bosses for a good while. Really impressed by the creativity!

Mysterious_Ad8041

Aeterna Noctis is very good Only is bad for casual players like you

Lochltar

Bla bla bla...I just beat this mother fucking Demon General so I can beat anything including Aeterna Noctis.

As soon as the messenger changed mid way through the game to the 16 bit stuff I immediately lost interest. I hate when games change up completely half way through

MRKSRKSSN

I loved that! Having 8 bit symbolize the present and 16 bit the future. Nice, creative take.

saltyfingas

I guess my thing was it wasn't so much the change in art style, like that I'm okay with, but the game kind of completely shifted to something else entirely. Maybe I need to give it another go, but I just really liked the simplicity of the first half
