I just ran into this program. https://www.maptoglobe.com . I am not affiliated with it in any way.
The dam thing will take any flat image and change it into a globe or a mutilate of other projections.
Example this [wiki map](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cf/A_large_blank_world_map_with_oceans_marked_in_blue.PNG) to a [globe gif](https://imgur.com/a/KRdKotG) to a [Waterman buttterfly](https://imgur.com/a/FTIljI5)
That first map is neither mercator nor the equirectangular projection that maptoglobe is designed to take as input, hence the rather squished appearance of Alaska and Kamchatka in the resuling globe and watermann.

Yeah. Just something I grabbed in a hurry to display it.
Awesome! I thought the Waterman Butterfly was proprietary?
I’ll have to check this out. Thanks!
