There's so much here:
- Speeltuin (playground) Gandalf, Gloin, Galadriel, Fili, Fangorn, Lorien, Elros, Arwen, Westernisse, Sam Gewissies
- Meriadoc, a home for people with autism
- Roze Olifant Park
- Skatepark Laan van Tolkien
- De Hobbit, an elementary school
It was more than mere chance that brought Merry and Pippin to Fangorn. A great power has been sleeping here for many long years. The coming of Merry and Pippin will be like the falling of small stones... that starts an avalanche in the mountains.

I should have liked to see the songs come true about the Entwives. I should dearly have liked to see Fimbrethil again. But there, my friends, songs like trees bear fruit only in their own time and their own way: and sometimes they are withered untimely.
TOO COOL! A local! I have a few questions, if you don't mind me asking:
- What do the townsfolk think of all the naming? Indifferent at this point, or do some appreciate it?
- Is there any Tolkien-esque "theming" around besides naming of things?
- About how old is this neighborhood?
I dont mind
Locals do like it, but not special. Its not that we talk about it or something
Not really
I dont know the year. But it was already there before the movies
I went to a school called ‘the hobbiton’ (de hobbitstee) not far from that neighbourhood. They have us dress up as little leprechauns for a schoolphoto every year. Never really understood it. Was far before the movies made their debut.
Hi there, the neighborhood is built between aprox 1990-2005, some of the houses like durin and erebor where build a bit later then the other ones but they where always named after LOTR, tbh, i don’t think about it every morning that its named after an character, and yes i went to the nutschool as well unfortunately there’s not any theming apart from the naming
Thanks! Is their mascot a dragon? I wonder if they get a lot of tourists?
Like is it just the names of things or is the neighborhood LOTR themed?
I've so many questions.
Edit: their
In high school and college (ages 14 to 22 or so), mascots are used in sports, just like in professional sports. So my school's team could be the Wildcats and this week our football team is playing the Spartans from the town next door.
From there, you have things like t-shirts with the school mascot on it, or pencils or lanyards, and people buy these to show their "school spirit". For whatever reason, this has moved down to middle school and elementary schools. Either because the branded items were a moneymaker, or maybe they just want us to be excited about being at our school.
That said, I have never heard of a preschool (younger than age 5) having a mascot.
Most European countries, with the exception of Britain (that I know of, maybe a few more), don't mix sport with school. A sport association is completely separate from the schools here
Nah we Just like to name out streets, probably not themed and not many tourists. Neighbourhoods have streets named after flowers, snails, musicians, instruments, even harry Potter characters
When I lived in Eindhoven the area I lived in had streets named after jazz musicians. The neighboring area had streets named after fairytale characters.
He's over there. Always there. Orcs will take you all the way. Easy to find Orcs east of the River. Don't ask Smeagol.Poor, poor Smeagol, he went away long ago. They took his Precious, and he's lost now.
I live a few hours from this town, but you can explore the streets in Google Streetview (google Maps) if you want. The signs are nothing special though, just blue rectangular plates with white names.
Damn you must live really far. Rarely is something in the Netherlands "a few hours away". I live on the other side of the country from Geldrop, and it's still about an hour and a half drive lol
He's mine. My four-legged friend; though I seldom ride him, and he wanders often far, free upon the hillsides. When
your ponies stayed with me, they got to know my Lumpkin; and they smelt him in the night, and quickly ran to meet him.

*Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! My darling! Light goes the weather-wind and the feathered starling. Down along under Hill,
shining in the sunlight, waiting on the doorstep for the cold starlight, there my pretty lady is, River-woman's daughter,

There’s a neighborhood right by my college (in the USA) with a bunch of roads named like this. Mostly locations, but there is one named after Gil-galad
There is a Sam street, right underneath Gandalf. Also a Sam path and a Sam playground. And the Merry street is in between Galadriel and Eowijn. The scale of the picture is just not sufficient to show all the names.

There are a couple streets making this kind of reference in my town. As a delivery guy, I took a run to see the neighborhood. I was mildly disappointed, but no regrets. :)
[Found it](https://maps.app.goo.gl/qPmuBKaUWCJ52Dej8). It looks like it's in a small town outside of Eindhoven.
Does the neighborhood have a name?
Would seem like a waste to not call it Middle-Earth
Or The Shire.
I got married at in an area here called The Shire. Off Ringbearer Ct iirc.
Arda at the very least
Gondor has no name. Gondor needs no name.
Stop copying my pfp dude
Town is called Geldrop, neighbourhood is called Genoenhuis. Fun fact, there’s a school in there called The Hobbit too!
There's so much here: - Speeltuin (playground) Gandalf, Gloin, Galadriel, Fili, Fangorn, Lorien, Elros, Arwen, Westernisse, Sam Gewissies - Meriadoc, a home for people with autism - Roze Olifant Park - Skatepark Laan van Tolkien - De Hobbit, an elementary school

Merry and Pippin at Fangorn Playground? Sounds like Isengard, Gandalf!
Hoom, hm! Ah now, a dwarf and an axe-bearer! Hoom! I have good will to Elves; but you ask much. This is a strange friendship!

The Hobbit is a toddler school. The elementary school is called the Ganzebloem and my mom works there Meme edit; it is a nutschool. Yes it is

Dude you're awesome. Thanks for the response!

Wait why is Roze Olifant Park related? It just means pink elephant?
I figured because of the Oliphaunts
Probably not, Olifant is the dutch word for elephant
Can’t tell if naming the home for people with autism Mariadoc is a dig or not
Nah, now if they had named it Peregrin on the other hand, that would have been a dig.
My aunt lives in the peregrine, its just cut out of the image
Geldrop de gekste!
Mede-Geldrop bewoner gedetecteerd
I'm dutch from a different city. Back in the day my elementary school was called Hobbiton. (Hobbitstee in dutch)
Thanks! Is their mascot a dragon? I wonder if they get a lot of tourists? Like is it just the names of things or is the neighborhood LOTR themed? I've so many questions. Edit: their
Schools don't have mascots here
Start a new trend. Go Smaug!
This doesn't happen to me much, but I'm legit culture shocked by that lol
What would a school need a mascot for?
>What would a school need a mascot for? *Brain.exe has stopped working* I guess mainly as a logo for the school lol? Never actually thought about that
In high school and college (ages 14 to 22 or so), mascots are used in sports, just like in professional sports. That's a whole lotta capitalism inside of a school lol
Yeah it's really weird I take a step back and think about it
Most European countries, with the exception of Britain (that I know of, maybe a few more), don't mix sport with school. A sport association is completely separate from the schools here
Nah we Just like to name out streets, probably not themed and not many tourists. Neighbourhoods have streets named after flowers, snails, musicians, instruments, even harry Potter characters
Found Sam and merry they seem to be little paths. There also Tolkien lane & frodo Street
Narnia Someone really dropped the ball
Not as a whole, but all the streets are linked to the Laan van Tolkien (lane of tolkien in english i guess? Or tolkien lane)
PACK YOUR BAGS KIDS, WE ARE LEAVING!
When I lived in Eindhoven the area I lived in had streets named after jazz musicians. The neighboring area had streets named after fairytale characters.
Oh wow. There really isn't a Samwise. I assumed Samwise had to be one of the small streets you can't see the name of.
It might be Sam Gewissies. His name may have gone through some translation. Not all of the names match exactly (See also: Eowijn and Merijn).
And Pepijn.
u/indyK1ng is correct. Sam Gewissies is the translation for Samwise Gamgee. His street is below Gandalf (and like Gandalf, he has a playground).
Imagine living on Denethor street.
I hope they have a tomato garden there
Or a ~~steak~~ stake house
It would smell like burning flesh all the time.
*bring wood and oil*
I hope they don’t have a tomato garden
Worry if you neighbor brings home wood and oil!
Yeah but the drop off at the end of the street is really steep
I have delivered pizza to the Denethor street. it did have tomato sauce but fortunately no cherry tomato's.
I would be honored to live on a street named after the Laiquendi king.
Imagine living with your brother on Denethor street
Better be the older brother then.
Is it truly better tho?
I was just thinking I wonder if the houses on certain streets are cheaper than others…
Bring me wood and oil.
On the plus side, the street lights are *really* bright

Aragorn moves me as well.
Ok Arwen maybe calm down a sec

That didn't work for Eowijn
Where’s Gollum precious?

Is it secret? Is it safe?
Sentient Gandalf.
and I'm sure you will my dear friend.
Thanks for wishing me to be secret and safe in these troubled times Gandalf.
A wizard is never late, Unframed_. Nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
I never doubted you would Gandalf.
Just tea, thank you.
Tolkien society owns that one. Please tell us if you see it in other towns.
I'ma checking every street on my town, if I find a Gandalf one I will warn the Tolkien Society instantly!
The Eye of Sauron
Gandalf road needs to be a bridge with a toll for sure. "YOU SHALL NOT PASS (without paying 1.25)"
Over the Bridge! Fly!
Fly, you fools!
And does it have a dead end (you shall not pass!)
You shall not pass! *waves staff in middle of the road*

Pack your bread and potatoes people, we are going for an adventure
So like, 5 minutes by car for me. And we have nough bread and potatoes in the Netherlands already.
I would love to see some pics of the street signs, if you ever get the chance to post them.
I live a few hours from this town, but you can explore the streets in Google Streetview (google Maps) if you want. The signs are nothing special though, just blue rectangular plates with white names.

Then coffee and stroopwafels.
Worstenbroodjes
Is this real? Really? Where is it? I’m overly excited by the prospect of this
It is! You can check Google maps for any of the streetnames, name of the city is Geldrop
Denethor being closer to Boromir than Faramir...I see what you did there.
It drives me nuts that Elrond is so far away from Galadriel and Celeborn
Well, in the world they are also pretty far away from eachother.
Industriepark my favorite character 😍
I like his dialogue with Emopad
Really didn't see it coming when Zwembadweg killed him.
And Grijzerooiseweg who was evil after all, who could see that coming?
Da's pech. Zwembadweg.
Emo - path literally
They’re related to Hoog Geldrop, right?
No, Hoog Geldrop is Industriepark's horse, the one who had a brief but passionate romance with old Fatty Lumpkin
He's mine. My four-legged friend; though I seldom ride him, and he wanders often far, free upon the hillsides. When your ponies stayed with me, they got to know my Lumpkin; and they smelt him in the night, and quickly ran to meet him. ^(I am a bot, and I love old Tom. "Yeah, we got a dine and dasher running between first and second breakfast street."
A whole neighborhood in my town has LotR/Hobbit themed streets too! Evenstar, Oakenshield, Overhill, Underhill, Brandywine, etc :)
There’s a Mirkwood street not far from where I live. Naturally, it’s a rural area in the woods.
I hope there is a light hearted movement to make it Greenwood.
Rivendell in Oklahoma City?
nope west coast, but there is a rivendell, it's a school :)
[удалено]
Yes now I feel like I need to remove my comment lol Goddamn reddit jk
Davis?
I think I know where I’m moving
You can't. Finding a house here feels a bit like being a Sackville-Baggins going after Bag End
Too sad
Dwalin, Balin, Fili, Kili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur... We seem to be missing one.
E M O P A D
You forgot zwembadweg
Da's pech, zwembad weg! (That's unfortunate, pool 's gone!)
Ah yes, Zwembadweg Eikenschild
Aragorn and Arwen don't intersect? Why kind of blasphemy is this?
If you're in the US, you can always just move [here](https://www.google.com/maps/@38.5510297,-121.7810415,17.57z) instead. Gonna go live on Bombadil and Goldberry one of these days.
Bombadil should be a loop that doesn’t go anywhere and has a sign with the street name every 3 feet.
No, you're looking for Bombadillio road, this is Bombadilly road.
*Tom's country ends here: he will not pass the borders. Tom has his house to mind, and Goldberry is waiting!* ^(I am a bot, and I love old Tom. There are street names like this in Columbia, Maryland, USA. Centered around Hobbits Glen golf course.
I can't believe they left Thranduil out. That's ok though. He's patient. He can wait.
This is so stupid I love it
I enjoy that they made Faramir street longer than Boromir street.
Don’t forget their brother, Palantir!
Imagine how emasculated they will both feel when they see the length of Aragon's.
Where tf is Grond Ave? Literally a main character
GROND
Portland, OR should rename Grand Ave. to GROND Ave.
Brb gonna go do some spray painting 😂
GROND
Grond literally translates to ground in Dutch
GROND
I’m assuming “Industrial Park” was picked because calling it “Mordor” would’ve been off putting and a little too on the nose for the area?
No it was already there before the area was developed further. Same for Emopad (great name) and Zwembadweg.
I consider myself lucky because a neighbourhood near me is nicknamed the Shire, with roads named after Bombadil, Rivendell, Goldberry, Oakenshield, and many others

I love how the lake is called "ijzeren man" which means Iron Man
When you want Arwen Lane, but get stuck on Eyowen Ave...
Ah yes, You are soldiers of Zwembadweg!
Laan Van Tolkien
Ah, good old Emopad
I had an area near my hometown (Portland, OR) that was all hobbit names
There are some areas of NE Portland/Rockwood that should have Orc names,IMO.( Snaga, Grishnakh, Azog, etc.)
Is emopad a goth hobbit?
San Jose, CA has a neighborhood based on LOTR; my in laws live there.
Imagine living in boromir street...
Sounds like a dead end.
Oh no...
You wish that our places were switched, that you lived in boromir street and I lived in faramir street
Yes. I wish that.
Frodo should have been the shortest street
I must live there immediately
Also that little body of water at the bottom translates to 'Iron Man'
Glorfindel seeing Bifur Court; “No, it’s fine, really, I mean, I didnt do that much after the 2nd age i guess. Totally not bothered…Its fine.”
That is brilliant 😂😍
Can't find Thorin...
It's down there, parallel with Fili, below Balin and above Durin, but the word Genoenhuis is covering it
Gandalf is always at the centre of things.
My favoritr character: zwembadweg
It would be funny if there would be a Pippin street near Palantir.
The dutch translation of Pippin is Pepijn (for some reason) which is a street bottomleft
The reason is that Pepijn is a normal Dutch name and so makes more sense to use in a Dutch translation then an English name
I live in the Netherlands and I didn't know this, wow.
There’s a neighborhood right by my college (in the USA) with a bunch of roads named like this. Mostly locations, but there is one named after Gil-galad
R-remember when we kissed in Bombur street? O\_O
I am quite sad that they seem to have left out two of the hobbits.... Where's Merry & Sam? Those are the two best hobbits.
There is a Sam street, right underneath Gandalf. Also a Sam path and a Sam playground. And the Merry street is in between Galadriel and Eowijn. The scale of the picture is just not sufficient to show all the names. https://maps.app.goo.gl/8VrnBwUQXVRJT2QK6
There’s also a neighborhood in Oklahoma where all the streets are Lotr references Rivendell https://goo.gl/maps/uB6tbirnxpKz5TQY9
Imagine living in industriepark when you could have lived in aAragorn street down the road lol
But do they have permission to be using those names?????
No Sam ? Pshh
No Teleporno street. I'm devastated.
I don't see Teleporno street
Legolas lane has a good ring to it
One does not simply walk to Gjizenrooiseweg
I live there. AMA
Insert Borat 'I go to ~~America~~ the Netherlands' meme
There are a couple streets making this kind of reference in my town. As a delivery guy, I took a run to see the neighborhood. I was mildly disappointed, but no regrets. :)
Living here will be a dream come true
Where’s The Shire ffs
