ONIONSAREKINGS

You crazy son(or daughter) of a bitch you did it

Rexli178

It’s worth mentioning Penguins are not sexually dimorphic. As they poses cloacas you can not determine sex based on genitals. It is basically impossible to visually identify the sex of an animal that is not sexually dimorphic. You’d either have to perform a blood test or smell their anal glands in the case of beavers. So it wasn’t that they didn’t announce the sex of the newly hatched penguin chick it was that it is literally impossible to determine the sex of a new born chick.

steve_stout

It’s not quite that complex but it’s a little bit more gross, they have to probe the cloaca to feel the penguin’s genitals

transhumanistcandy

This is the kinda shit you want to read at 5:30 in the morning

Hope you get some sleep then

I don't think my boss would like that.

I feel like some people are misunderstanding something because of the way the headline is framed. They weren’t tested to be parents because they’re lesbian penguins, they’re tested because they’re in captivity. A lot of animals in zoos can’t be returned to the wild for multiple reasons, and sometimes animals don’t have parental instincts when they’ve lived in captivity. I’m positive the zoo does the same thing for the straight penguins, they don’t let animals breed randomly in zoos to avoid overpopulation (and in some cases can’t get them to breed, looking at you pandas.)

OilersGirl29

Thank you for explaining this! I was a little taken aback from the headline!

Fimbulthulr

same. especially since iirc gay penguins in are a prime example of gay animal couples adopting young (or even eggs), thus also showing that homosexuality probably has some evolutionary benefit

LoveAGoodMurder

It’s because then babies still survive if a parent gets killed or rejects the baby. Penguin parenthood depends on a two-parent system, so if one parent dies, then the baby will go to a gay/lesbian couple, which helps the colony.

DraftyGecko900

The pandas started fucking as soon as people left for the pandemic. They just needed privacy.

xrossplayxino

Still though, they could've phrased that better. I was already calling out double standards.

Hi friend! It seems you’ve mistaken the antiquated zoo practices with the modern ones that are in place today in a lot of Western countries! While roadside zoos do still exist for profit and rarely take care of all of the animals’ complex needs, most large zoos that you see are actually very ethical and a source of education and even conservation. They design enclosures to benefit the species, perform daily enrichment and wellness checks, and breeding is a well researched and well planned for. Especially zoos that are AZA accredited - such standards are very rigorous and include access to a worldwide database of captive animals and SSPs, or species survival plans, on how to best care for (and breed if needed) captive animals as well as monitoring their wild counterparts. I would highly recommend reading some articles! A quick google search on “are zoos ethical” will give you plenty of information. Best of luck :) Source: I am a zookeeper with a BS in Zoology!

Zoyah547

I know I'm late but, happy bi-visibility day. 😊💙💚🌈

sassaire

Thank you oh my gosh

NotaVogon

Thank you for what you do! We have an amazing zoo here in NOLA and they have done a lot of conservation work for threatened Louisiana species. Every zookeeper I have met sincerely loves the animals in their care and only wants the best for them. <3

sassaire

Thank you so much! I appreciate you sticking up for us zookeepers :) it can be difficult to navigate the stigma some people have towards old zoo practices!

Yo, veganism is incredibly important and as close as we can get to an objective good for the world. We know. Now please stop being an asshole and accusing people of shit left and right. There are ways to talk about these things without coming off as aggressive and hateful

[deleted]

[удалено]

HughJamerican

Maybe they don't want to answer you because of your tone. That's why I'm not going to answer you. Maybe if person after person calls you an asshole and difficult to talk to, the problem doesn't lie with those people. I support your cause. Veganism is 100% ethical and absolutely should be practiced. The meat industry is a blighted hellscape of cruelty, no question. I still won't tell you whether or not I'm a vegan because you haven't given me any reason to want to share that with you, you've just been unnecessarily caustic.

notsocialyaccepted

That doesnt make sense lots of other animals than humans eat other animals they still love animals tho and u dont have to abuse animals to kill them n make food u can in some cases just break their necks But anyways What other humans eat or not is none of your bussines they can still love animals

henryrollinsneck

You're being an unnecessary asshole right now. Chill out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

henryrollinsneck

Wow, you're disturbingly manipulative. No one was even talking about vegans or eating meat, you literally took someone's reference to Hitchhiker's guide and twisted it to fit your narrative so you could chastise someone for something you don't even know if they do. Wtf is wrong with you?

[deleted]

[удалено]

henryrollinsneck

This is why no one likes you and why 75% of your comments are downvoted. Do you wear/use only ethically sourced clothing, shoes, personal hygiene products, tech devices, etc? No? Then tell me, Maria, why do you hate humans so much? Why do you support the use of child slave labor? Why are you such a shit person?

Apocalyptyca

You are the reason people talk shit about vegans.

[deleted]

could u please chill while yes there are some awful places that do this but about 99% don't do that they are for education. have u ever been to the Detroit Zoo? well if not its a very nice zoo in Detroit Michigan and they take well of there animals we have members pass and we go there every so often.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LetsRockDude

You do realise we're talking about zoos, not circuses? The whole point of them is to provide natural habitats to individuals that for some reason cannot live in the wild. They'd die otherwise. We're saving them, Maria, not training to play with a ball on guests' command. > «breed» (rape, as animals cannot consent) ...what

foxie-in-space

Maria, I just want to ask you, since you seem so set against for-profit zoos: how would the non profit animal sanctuary be able to provide appropriate housing, care and food for the animals if they don't have an income? Do you think it could purely exist on donations? In the ideal world, maybe it could, but in at least right now it really couldn't. Hence zoos asking for fees so people can go view the animals, from a distance, without bothering them (except maybe through sound). And before you ask, no I'm not vegan, I'm not even vegetarian, but I try my hardest to get all products I eat, whether it be animal or plant based, from ethical sources, even if it makes my groceries sometimes a lot more expensive.

I-Survived-2020

Most animals in zoos nowadays are either born in captivity and therefore have insufficient natural instincts or were injured to a degree where the zoo is the better option. There’s problems with the conditions of many zoos but their existence isn’t the issue

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheRubyScorpion

It is not rape for animals to breed. Of course they can't give consent but if they didn't breed (or as you call it rape) they would all go extinct. As for the world needing veganism to stabilize that isn't exactly true. We can now grow meat in labs which would make it both ethical and more environmentally friendly

deviantbyblood

No modern zoos are literally all that stand between dozens of species and extinction. Until the planet is stable, which at this rate it won’t ever be because of capitalism, those animals have no where to go. Not to mention elites buying shit and poachers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

deviantbyblood

...okay. Well first, you’d have to get funding for those animal sanctuaries. Zoos are already stretching resources to make ends meet, with the little federal funding they get, and rely on visitors to keep going. It’d be next to impossible in the US at least to get a country and government that doesn’t even fully believe in climate change or vaccines to pay for something they would never directly benefit from. Second, zoos are one of the great equalizers of education left. To remove them as education tools would mean the only way citizens would be able to learn and engage with nature would be to either live near a natural area or be able to travel to one, and that immediately prevents most poor and middle class people from getting the same opportunities as the rich. This will create a disconnect from science and make it that much harder to inspire the next generation into protecting something they’ve never even seen. Next, the “commodity status” of animals would not apply to zoos. They’re already largely non profits or the profits they do make fo directly back into community programs, or to zoo maintenance. Also don’t compare people to animals. Class liberation and freedoms from poverty, patriarchy, exploitation, racism, all that shit is not the same as converting zoos to sanctuaries. If you care about environmentalism and conservation you should understand that sustainability is and in fact was a thing for many many hundreds of years, particularly in indigenous north and South American cultures. Not to suggest the “one with nature” stereotype but there was lots of evidence that their practices, such as controlled burns, deliberate forestry, and nomadic tendencies kept a balance far more sustainable than almost anything created by the western world. That being so, we can identify the greatest contributors to climate change and the false scarcity of resources to capitalism, which is incentivized to waste, exploit, and consume as many resources as possible, workers included. It is not just animals agriculture. It’s the entire way allow the companies to decimate and distribute natural resources, as we already make 1.5x enough food to feed everyone on earth https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.huffpost.com/entry/world-hunger_b_1463429/amp To reduce this to just the meat industry is missing the cause of climate change entirely, 70% of pollution comes from 100 companies. The US military is the greatest contributor on earth, etc. etc.

I wonder why the have to prove they'd be good parents, like is there some boxes they have to check to make sure the chick will survive with said parents. Cuz there are probably awful straight penguins too.

MarxistHellBorb

There are! Zoos etc often have to rescue babies from shitty parents (not feeding them, not keeping them warm, etc) and give them to experienced foster parents. In this case, the fosters are lesbians!

SkrrrFortnite

I believe they do that with heterosexual animals in captivity too

I've never seen that happen, I've worked at a zoo.

andallthatjasper

I think in zoos they generally have to ensure animals have no genetic or behavioral abnormalities that could endanger the baby before they are allowed to mate. Presumably they took the same sort of precautions here. Y'know, to make sure they wouldn't just go "nah fuck this kid" at some point.

Valo-FfM

I think the point was that real life gay people should not have to jump through extra loops for adoptions.

ALaRequest

Sure. But penguins aren't real life gay people. These are two completely separate situations that have no bearing on each other. Maybe /u/Social_Anxietus meant exactly what you're saying, but there's nothing to indicate that, so it really does just seem like they're taking the headline at face value and making a judgment without trying to understand *why,* in their initial comment.

MarxistHellBorb

Nah, zoos have to rescue babies from shitty parents all the time and give them to experienced foster parents. Makes sense that they'd want to make sure these gals are prepared!

Social_Anxietus

Oh that makes sense. I thought they weren’t going to give this penguin couple a baby until the proved they were good parents because they are a pengsbian couple
