Post Game Thread: Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs - 16 Oct 2021

Jack Campbell only allowing 2 goals in 7 periods
This comment needs more attention
The Canadians scored 2 goals through 8 periods
This also needs more attention
2nd in goals saved above expected
Pretty solid 60 minute effort. I am satisfied. The refs suuuuuuuck big balls though.
Its been absolutely comical how bad the refs have been to start the season
Refs have obviously been 50-50 refs ever since that hot mic incident last year
The team looked good for the most part tonight, Sandin is gonna be elite for us in the near future and Lily had an impressive outing. Hopefully Matty is good to go for Monday
Sandin definitely going to be a stud. He looks very confident which is great to see in a young, skilled D man.
> Sandin is gonna be elite for us in the near future
It's going to be sooner than later.
Lol what a sequence at the end there with the empty net.
It made me unsure if Forsberg was the reason they couldn't buy one or if they had some magic wizardry and voodoo shit going on with their actual _net_
Honestly, credit to the Sens for not giving up. Blocking shots, doing everything they could to prevent the goal. It's be pretty easy at that point to just let it in and roll over.
They knew they didn't have enough time to get down the ice and score twice, but still did everything in their power to prevent the empty net goal. Good on them.
Yep. Like it was a hilarious sequence, and Tavares and Mitch will get a lot of mockery for it, but if it were the reverse and the Leafs did all those things to defend an empty net we wouldn't be going "haha Stutzle/Batherson/Norris are such losers lmao" we would be raving about the determined effort and defensive plays.
The tradition of being unable to score on ENs continues!
Without Hyman, we may never score on an empty net again!
We have lost our empty net specialist.
The empty net king 😢👑
I wanted JT to get one there at the end so badly, even Marner too. Nice to see Bunting get his first as a Leaf, and Soupy looking solid again!
So pumped to watch hockey on Monday night not vs a Canadian team though.
Aaaaaand I miss Papi
Maple Leafs are undefeated with Alex Bishop on the roster!
I know that Marner and Tavares aren’t scoring but I trust them to start doing so: they haven’t forgotten how to be elite
What’s encouraging is that we’re picking up wins *despite* their not scoring
Preesh the silver. I’ll add this: as a Jays fan, I just watched a team with season-long, award-worthy performances from their headline players miss the playoffs by *one game*, and it’s because the pieces around those headliners let the team down in games they should’ve won. If signings like Bunting, Kase, Kampf, and Ritchie work out, it bodes really well for the Leafs, and signs are pointing to that so far
Better depth scoring this year and they’ve gotten some good chances which gives me confidence they’ll get it rolling soon. JT seems to be working his ass off, right to the end there too.
JT got robbed so many times tonight. I though both he and Marner had great games despite not being able to bury any. If they look like that every night I have no worries about their production.
They both look like they’re on a mission and have something to prove this season (for obvious reasons we don’t need to discuss)
They will always be a threat. That's a given. When they continue to be a threat, they will continue to draw the highest level of defense against them. Its up to the rest of the team to win the 2nd and 3rd and even 4th line matchups against them, and if they do, that's where we can play smart hockey.
It blows my mind all of the people saying Marner had a terrible game?? Like what? He was flying, if JT scored instead of getting robbed then they wouldn't have said anything. People just can't see past the score sheet apparently.
Tavares and Marner were factors in this game for sure. They were a constant threat in the ice and put in a ton of work. They were not pedestrian at all even though their score sheets are donuts. The points will come.
Fingers crossed Kase stays healthy and Ritchie isn't a penalty liability but I love those signings.
* Kampf enters the conversation.
To be honest Kampf is all over the fucking place. His defensive play is ridiculously good. Every play he makes is a smart play.
Future selke and lady byng winner David Kampf
Take in, Matthews is out of the lineup too. The depth has been great so far.
Tavares has been his usual grinder self, just unable to get the finish due to some bad luck right now.
Marner looked worse than last year for the first 2 games, but looked much better this game. Hopefully it was just shaking off the rust.
Bunting sealed that one . Good on ya brother
We're the better team, played like the better team for the most part. Always happy to hear "Right back from where we started from".
But please God, stop the own blueline turnovers for everyone's benefit.
Lol Marner and Tavares need to go sacrifice a goat or something
LEAFS WIN MONTREAL LOSES = GREAT NIGHT BOYS! (Montreal 0-3 to start the season even better)
"The habs are gonna surprise a lot of people this season."
I’m surprised by how bad Suzuki and Caufield look.
Honestly, I'm not. They were riding some huuuuge hype.
I mean if you want the real answer it's because they're not being sheltered anymore. Imagine we were super duper impressed with bunting, mikheyev, Robertson etc. But all of our stars left. That's what Suzuki and caufield are. They're amazing if they're on your 2nd line but I'm not confident of their first line abilities to be honest.
That’s…. Not exactly true. The biggest names up front that the Habs lost were KK, Danault, and Perry
Yes but Suzuki and Caufield were not being deployed with heavy minutes like they are now... Losing Danault and does make an impact on their roster. Gally can't continue to eat minutes, their rookies are going to have to step up or they're going to have to go through a true rebuild now..
I mean, no Price is a big hit. On the ice, and off. The way that Montreal has relied on him. Knowing he'd be back there, it's gotta hurt to not know when that might be.
Looking like picking up Allen was a real good idea for them.
I would cross No Man's Land for Jack Campbell.
Stzule is scary. I don't hear him as often but he's very fun to watch. Weird how Caufield is talked about more
Well Caulfield plays for the Habs so not that weird, no one gives a shit about the Sens.
Marner will be fine. Bunting is my new best friend.
I love Soupy. He's the best player on the Leafs right now.
I'm trying a few things to maintain my sanity this season: never go on twitter, absolutely never go into a game thread, and never visit this subreddit after a Leaf loss.
The game thread was toxic as fuck at 2-1. It goes beyond criticism and crosses into collective mental illness.
Clicking the far right arrow on the Mitch haters does get tedious.
I block everyone who is clearly just there to complain about salaries or bitch about Marner. The game threads are actually half decent for me now but I can’t see 1/4 of the comments
It's a fucking embarrassing look on this sub.
Go on Facebook if all you do is complain.
i always hang out in the r/hockey GDTs, they're pretty good for the most part, though sometimes the quarantine seal from here breaks, and some assholes get out.
Sub's pretty bad during the game as well
Through 3 games, nobody on the top line has had a goal. That sucks, but at least the best goal scorer in hockey will be back playing for the Leafs soon. I just hope it's enough to get Marner/Tavares/Ritchie going, because every other line has managed to contribute
Honestly the second line is being DRIVEN by Nylander, don't mess with it. When Matthews comes back throw Tavares on his wing. I guess Ritchie gets sent down to the fourth where him and Wayne can piss off goalies all day.
So excited to play a non canadin team
I'm not excited about possibly playing against Georgiev.
No puck luck today for Marner or JT. I'm sure that will turn around soon.
Great start to the game with the Simmer goal and lol the ending to the game, those two not getting any puck luck.
Kace kampf bunting and Ritchie are great at puck retrieval and possession, fun to watch
Someone pls lift the curse on JT on Marner! Also bunting is quickly becoming one of my favourite guys
Bunting looks like a scrawny adult but then you see him play and see the abuse he takes and you're even more impressed lol
Ritchie was so ineffective on the PP blocking the goaltender's vision. He should learn a lesson from Simmonds. Ritchie was way too passive with his size
Right? It’s like he was being polite or something.
Bunting looks like a great pickup, cheaper version of Hyman.
He’s really good at pissing off the opposition too. I love this guy.
Marner is absolutely snake bit.
To me, marner burns through the opposing teams best lines and best defense, leaving the door open for people like willy and bunts to score.
I guess it's all part of his job and all, but I think people under rate how good he is at it
He’s just not worth his contract
Wow hot take
oh ow ouch oh fuck oh dang, ahh i have been burned so much by this incredibly hot take oof ouch owie
wow so based how did you come up with this incredible analysis
That's it. That's the comment.
That is all.
Isles 0-2 👀
Marner and JT need to sacrifice a virgin or something to break their curse
Plenty of those in Ottawa.
MTL starts the season 0-3
You love to see it
Bunting at 2 years 950k looking real nice. Ritchie at 2 years 2.5M looking real not nice.
Ritchie has been fairly invisible minus the odd penalty, JT and Marner getting some chances but can’t buy a goal. I don’t mind the line, but I’d like to see Ritchie help drive some play a bit more.
Ritchie will figure it out once he's on the line with Matthews and Marner tbh. They will be big and mean and hard to play against with Matthews on to one side and Ritchie net front
Who would win? Two top-tier NHL players, or one empty net boi?
Seriously, are Marner and JT cursed?! Both played well but just no luck at all.
I thought Liljegren did okay. Yes he made a few dumb mistakes but he'll mature out of that with more playing time/experience, hopefully.
And Bunting was great.
Doesn't help when Simmer whips an unrushed pass into his skates.
Did we watch different games? I thought Liljegren was excellent and head & shoulders better than Holl has been in his two games. Made smart passes out of the zone, positionally aware, and defensively responsible. That break out pass that lead to the 2-on-1 goal was excellent!
He was great at times but really showed his inexperience at times too.
I’m not sure he showed his inexperience anymore than Sandin for example who twice in a row missed a hit on Ennis behind the net.
Lily was great in my eyes. He did make some minor mistakes, but I always saw he quickly made up for them. He's also a smart d man, made some great defensive decisions last night
For three games in four nights, that was pretty decent.
[Post Game Recaps/Highlights](https://www.puckfeed.com/feeds/all?team=10)
Who were the three stars?
Liljegren, with the laser beams up ice!
The most exciting part about this game for me is now that its done, finally playing a team besides Montreal and Ottawa, let alone the other Canadian franchises.
I really think that the Leafs will go on a bit of a run here. Although many across the league feel that the North division was weak (it wasn't), think of it this way: does every Canadian team not get up for the Leafs? The Sens and Canucks treat beating the Leafs like winning the Super-Duper Stanley World Bowl. Montreal always gets up for the games against Toronto. Edmonton is considered a huge game cause its Matthews vs. McDavid.
Also, the American teams haven't played the Leafs in a long time. Perhaps when Matthews is back his sneaky shot will surprise some of them, and you know Willy isn't going to get the respect he deserves. I know the other teams watch the tape, but there is a huge difference in San Jose watching tape of Matthews vs. Montreal playing him 14 games last year.
Bys laughing at Marner come on, he was great tonight.
He wasn't great at all. What game did you watch?
Same one as you, just because he had some bad puck luck doesn't mean he didn't play good tonight.
He was the reason the short handed goal was scored and was invisible all game except for 1 pass. He's been horrible to start the year.
short handed goal? what game did YOU watch lmfao
There wasn’t a short handed goal in the game, the Sens were on the power play. It’d also be weird to blame that one on him as I don’t think he was meant to be covering Norris in that situation.
I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. You should have a lot more self-doubt than you do
>You should have a lot more self-doubt than you do
I have to steal this holy shit
That one was on Kampf for puck watching. I like Kampf, but he was 100% puck watching on that play.
>He was the reason the short handed goal was scored and was invisible all game except for 1 pass. He's been horrible to start the year.
Exhibit #1 an argument using artificial facts.
You clearly have no idea what goes on when you're watching the TV, do you? Lmfao. You're wrong on everything you've said so far
the game where he played well defensively and set up tavares for like 3 goals and just missed on a breakaway and himself just missed the net by a couple inches
So he's Mikheyev? Great.
you marner haters really want him traded and also want him to perform bad. you cant have both if youre actually a leaf fan
I mean don't really have to root for him to play bad when he has been bad since the playoffs. His play speaks for itself.
then youre just a troll, it is what it is
Man, you sure are obsessed with Marner. Nearly every single comment in your post history is you bitching about him.
i actually think marner haters are just projecting their shit life onto him. no normal person would obsess about something like this. it's been years, get over it
I just don't understand why they make bitching about this one kid their entire existence. He's not even that bad. Like, I could see being that salty if someone was holding a gun to their head and forcing them to personally pay Marner's salary but...why do they care so much?
It's almost as cringe as the Nylander haters from two years ago.
exactly, i was kinda ticked off when the contract happened but got over it as year the year went on. brushed off the hate since then but it's fucking year 3 it's time to support the boys
Your mom's Mikheyev.
I'm critical of Marner, but he played well last night
got both JT and marner on my fantasy league what is wrong w them
So *you're* the cursed one!
Same here. Thank god I have Nylander as well. Lmao.
Yay win! But those empty net goal attempts....
We've always sucked at potting empty netters, honestly.
Well get none without Hyman.
Marner for Hyman anyone? /s
Literally nothing can come easily for the leafs.
I'm starting to think the "sacrifice a virgin" crowd is on to something
Marner ft. A 1000lb gorilla on his back
Think it has anything to do with the ridiculous amount of criticism?
Lol oh sorry i forgot I’m in a sports thread on Reddit where it’s absolutely unheard of to expect players making ten million dollars a year to contribute (think of his FEELINGS).
Bro. It’s his job. Big paycheque = big expectations. Stop coddling an adult man.
Just because someone makes lots of money doesn't make them less human.
damn dude, i wanna come over to your house and watch the newest movies with all that projection
Why the hell couldn't this have been the score on Thursday?
Would have made the drive home a lot nicer.
Was at that game too and also drove home a sad puppy
Imagine you're a kid playing goalie for a university and you get a call from Kyle asking you to be the backup lol. I wonder if Bishop was jumping up and down all day to even get this kind of opportunity lol.
Man, watching every other team pot empty netters, it almost looks easy or something...
We need Hyman back for his EN skills
Fuck the Habs
The Montreal Scrubs are on the verge of going down 0-3 in the season! That’s it, that’s the post.
Keefe needs to confiscate Marner’s video games. No more Fortnite until you figure that weak ass shot out, little man.
^^Beep ^^boop, ^^I'm ^^a ^^bot. ^^- ^^[FAQ](https://pastebin.com/raw/vyWra3ns)
types little man and he licks the doritos crumbs off his fingers
Rielly played about as good a game as I've seen him play tonight. Constantly moving the puck up the ice, some good defensive plays. Enjoyed watching his game.
How many more games like this until some crazy leaf fan starts comparing Mitch’s contract to Skinner’s.🙃
Marner 64.4% CF
Matthews should ask for 20mill in his next contract for having to carry Mitch on his back
Holl still on the ice for every 5 on 5 goal against this season.
Muzzin (57% xGF) looked back to normal paired with Liljegren. Liljegren played some tough minutes and finished with just under 50% xGF. He made some good plays, made some mistakes, but played well considering it was his 1st game of the year.
Great team effort. We'll be that much better when Tavares and Marner decide to start playing. Campbell is the man.
what do you mean when Tavares and Marner start playing? They were all over the puck tonight
Zeroes on the scoresheet which translates to “not playing” for a lot of fans.
Tavaras got robbed tonight as well by Frosberg
playing the perimeter doesn't really do shit, esp when it comes to Marner I noticed. JT at least will always cycle the puck effectively even when he's not scoring, and will take the puck to the net
Both Marner and JT looked great tonight…
Not complaining, just an observation. Tavares battled for the puck till the very end but Marner just sulked and skated away the instant his EN shot was blocked. Was really surprised by that.
There was like 2.5 seconds left I think he would have fought if there was an actual chance he could have gotten it.
Marner has no fight
Who gives a shit lol it was 3-1 with 2 seconds left
He’s a whiny baby
>Not complaining, just an observation. Tavares battled for the puck till the very end but Marner just sulked and skated away the instant his EN shot was blocked. Was really surprised by that.
Dude also at least got the puck to hit the crossbar with a backhand from far out, Mitch got blocked from the slot lol
Did the goalie from UofT get to play? I ended up missing the last half of the third
No, and that's a good thing since it would have required Jack to get hurt first.
Marner's play is very concerning. And its only the reg season.
Am I crazy for think he looked good tonight?
He and JT didn't score but they pushed the puck in the Sens zone on most of their shifts.
Nah, the marner haters are just collective ass hats
^^Beep ^^boop, ^^I'm ^^a ^^bot. ^^- ^^[FAQ](https://pastebin.com/raw/vyWra3ns)
Downvote this shit.
Nooooooo. My internet pointzzzz!
Have you thought maybe he's trying for the uno reverse card this year?
Has anyone seen number 16 ..
Couldn't even hit an empty net at close range. Come on. For 11 mill+ he should have hit it and had the puck land out on York St.
I miss Auston so damn much.
He did have a few good plays tonight but not sure if just unlucky or if his mental state needs to settle down
Nickname ideas for Bunting?
Not just good, he’s bun tingling good.
Lily had 2-4 absolutely horrible plays this game. Besides that he was fine.
Good game from Liljegren. Gotta keep it up do that he can’t be taken out of the lineup.
So, was it offside?
