Game Thread: Ottawa Senators (1-0-0) at Toronto Maple Leafs (1-1-0) - 16 Oct 2021 - 07:00PM EDT

Yes, to other vaccinated people who can still get sick and die despite being vaccinated, not to mention increase chances of spreading variants around a community.
I'm not quite sure what the long term plan is. I'm not really equipped to answer that, but at the very least, masks should be required until we have a better handle on the current situation globally. Why backtrack on everyone's hard work by needlessly spreading a virus with known variants that current vaccines aren't as effective against?
So I agree, but who are you talking to?
Woops. Was replying (trying to) to a comment in the thread.
Too many pops tonight.
Mitch Martin is a great passer has great hands but as a goal scorer people want to joke around, fine, that's funny that he misses and open net.
Mitch *Marner*'s shot got blocked by a diving Stutzle.
Yes they missed scoring on the empty net which was hilarious but they also kept the puck in Ottawa's end down a man for the last minute of the game.
AND IT'S ALRIGHT
Wow. Yesterday's AND today's stupidest comment of the day. Good job
username checks out
Man looking at your comment history, this isn't healthy.. move on dude
If the league thinks this artificial parity, by proxy of biased officiating, will help make the sport more entertaining and draw more viewers. They are dead wrong. All it will do is irritate your existing fanbase and making it more confusing for new fans to understand the rules. SMH
One of the big reasons the NHL is the worst of the top 4 leagues.
Whoever's responsible needs to lift the hex put on Marner because this is not funny anymore.
You're talking to 2/3 of this sub. Lmao
he'll be fine
The boys need to get some chicken bones and a priest.
time to switch sticks Marner
Mitch Marner should open up a fucking Muffin shop
Maybe some cupcakes, his passes are sooo sweeeeet :)
$20 Million vs an empty net rofl
Good god Mitch is terrible at shooting the puck
Mitch is so bad lol
JT looking average to start the season after looking amazing in preseason. He’ll probably figure it out.
Lol at Marner and Tavares. 4 shots at an empty net and they can’t score.
Lol, Marner... Go work on that shot bud
Properly cursed that game. I’m just burning the tape if I’m JT and MM
whats the point in possibly getting injured trying to block an empty net goal with less than 5 seconds left
Cant even score on an empty net lmao fuck Marner
Okay that entire sequence was funny
I died laughing, it was the perfect story to cap off that game
Sums it up for Tavares and Marner to start the season
Lmfao. Oh Marner.
Bunting the new Hyman?
Was at the game he is awesome and going to be a fan fave. Kept tapping the side of the net when the sens dmen were resetting and was agitating them. Don't think he is as big of a body but he has great effort like zach.
LMAO MARNER COULDN'T SCORE ON AN EMPTY NET
Needs to call his old buddy Zach
Mitch and John have 21 million between them-woul think they could buy one tonight
Marner just doesn’t want to score does he lol
Clearly he wants to.
For fucks sake
Lol. Marner can’t buy one. Gg tho.
Nice one lads ! Had fun with y’all tonight , seeyah next Saturday
Ok, that was hilarious
MARNER AND TAVARES IS CURSED
Marner is that trash at shooting
JT and MM cannot buy one. Jeeeeeze.
Lol the Goal graphic showing up
Lmfaooo Marner 10 mill and can't score on 2 position players in net
lol Marner is literally cursed
Tavares and Marner are just snakebit haha
Fuck, poor Marner.
This is very funny
Big boys empty net? Nope LOL holy shit man
Marners a joke.
Sums up marner's shooting ability perfectly
LOL Jt and Mitch so unlucky
Wow. Ottawa player was trying hard to sell the icing too. Haha.
Mitch the net was empty
Tavares empty net plz plz
hope they throw the U of T kid into the game if we get a whistle up 2 with like 3 or 4 seconds left
it was a clear as day offside why are we still talking about it Craig
I'll literally die for Jack Campbell
Big move by Brodie
Hey guys, were you all aware how close that offside call back goal was? I don't think anybody else seems to think it was that close.
when they reviewed the footage it was pretty clearly offsides. sure only by a few inches but not a close call at all
I dunno, I think it was pretty close, and I'm going to keep repeating how close I think it was, almost as if I think it shouldn't have been called back. Don't think there has ever been a closer offside call in the history of centimeters.
Not even remotely close but ok.
Why are people leaving?
Pathetic shit, same people
Posting about how they are “done” with the team after each loss.
Gotta BEAT THE TRAFFIICCCC 🙄
Lmao duh eh jeez
get JT or MM a goal
Who will get the ENGs for us now that Hyman is gone?
So sick of this “we gotta keep the game close” mentality for penalties. Only excuse for the refs would be “he was looking for a call”.. but yeah, unlikely considering he’s driving to the front and has a clear opportunity.
If this is going to happen in the majority of games this year I’m genuinely gonna stop watching. Ridiculous.
such a hard league to be a fan of with the obvious ref fuckery. I somehow force myself to forget how bad it is every offseason and how much it effects my enjoyment of the games.
Zub is an all time NHL name tho, sounds so good on broadcast haha
Leafs got this. No Engvall don’t try it!
bunting hat trick with the empty net let’s go boys
JT or MM get the empty
I'll take an empty netter right about now boys.
Hyman empty ne...... oh wait.
That’s why we have Bunting now
Tavares/Marner are completely out of sync right now -- and mostly the entire game
They both have had multiple grade A chances. This is a hot take.
Finishing just isn’t there yet. It’s early in the season
Sure, but it's about consistency and playing a 200ft game. It's not just about offence
I mean Mitch is one of our most complete players so again, hard disagree.
JT is coming back from what I think we were all almost certain was a career ending injury.
Context is key my dude.
For all the Tavares haters coming out of the woodwork already - [here is where he has ranked in pts since 2018.](https://i.imgur.com/tLIvRwG.png)
Did that not hit the goalie? How is that icing?
crowd knew that wasn't icing
THAT LITERALLY TOUCHED THE GOALIE. HOW IS THAT ICING!?
Didn't that his the post? How the fuck is that icing?!?
Jesus, is stutzle like the more extreme souperman, generates phenomenal chances but never seems to finish?
HOT TAKE but I think the areas that Tavares excels at get more impactful as we go further into the season. At the start of the season the systems are loose, players have a ton of energy, and the games are very pop-gun and erratic.
All of Tavares strengths are in the offensive zone and cycling. He is an absolute monster protecting the puck in the corners and working around the crease. Once things tighten up and we transition more to relying on the cycle game, he heats up.
Also have to consider Tavares is coming back after getting his head taken off
I thought his career was over, he has looked way better than I thought he would
the refs all grew up in fucking ottawa eh? both games have been crazy
It’s too bad the Ottawa player knocked Bunting down by hitting his skate instead of grazing his glove. Would’ve been a penalty then apparently.
Whistles have obviously gone away
I’m not usually one to complain about the refs but my god it’s been so incredibly one sided against the leafs the past 2 games
He grabbed his jersey and pulled him back. Clear penalty. Man the refs are almost as bad as premier league refs.
It's the NHL's mandate. Make sure shit ass teams can remain competitive with real teams because PARITY
Man why would Bunting just throw himself onto the ice like that, such a silly thing to do
Lmao can't believe they miss that but called those dumb hooking calls Thursday night
That was a ridiculous grab, get simmer out there to fight him
Is that not a trip?
We’ll it was. It you can’t call trips in the final few minutes. If he had tapped his glove with his stick though…
Who actually knows?
Bunting robbed. He made a great move there and got tripped. Too bad.
NHL not calling a clear and obvious penalty on the trailing team? Colour me shocked.
He literally pulled his sweater
*Edit: nah on the replay doesn’t look like he did. Live it did
What's the mask policy at the arena? I see a lot of folks not wearing one.
If you're drinking or eating in your seat you can have it off.
Who cares? They’re all vaccinated.
Not to turn the game thread into something it's not, but you can still spread the virus even if you're vaccinated.
To the other vaccinated people? And? The vaccine reduces transmission and severe disease. If a bunch of vaccinated people can’t gather then what’s the long term plan here? I’m a pharmacist and I work in the ICU. I’ve been dealing with covid this entire pandemic. I’m well aware of how it works.
This team is going to look so good when Matthews comes back. The line up is just missing a dominant two-way finisher who takes on all the toughest defensive match-ups so everyone else can feast on the soft competition.
Also, fuck that ref. Bunting was fucking tripped.
How is that not a penalty???
I didn’t see a stick lift
Lol. Top cheddar comment.
It happened against the Leafs while we're holding a lead.
Refs remain blind idiots
Did the crowd say Soup after the clear
hahaha did everybody see that stick drop on the sens shift change, he went into the bench without it
Should Richie be on the first line?
Says the guy half a forearm deep into a can of pringles.
Joke's on you I have a bag of Doritos.
Not with JT but it might work with AM.
Well, they said he’d be back for game 4. Would be neat to see.
these Sens really hate us and play their hearts out against us. It's a good test early in the season to see if we can close out these tight games cleanly against highly motivated teams
Is it just me or has Tavares been less of a force to be reckoned with since coming to the leafs? I felt like when we were playing against the islanders, Tavares was a guy we’d have to watch on the level of Crosby or malkin and now it’s like….where is he
It’s your expectations that are the problem.
I didn’t mean to make some comparison (bad examples) I just meant the main idea is I seemed to remember him being much more of a threat when he was on the islanders vs us compared to him being mostly invisible on the leafs
He has more points than all but 17 players since joining the Leafs, ahead of guys like Aho, Rantanen, Point, Matthews, etc.
Alright must just be some recency bias on my part. Thanks
Tavares was never at that level.
Not their exact elite level but just like a guy we had to watch that was an all star threat. Now it’s just like he’s not doing much
His first season with us was Fantastic. Dropping production wise since but still has clutch moments.
Is that not... a penalty ?
Bunting wanted that goal cause they took his assist away on the Kerfoot goal LOL.
Yes hammer them every chance. They want to try and fight their way back into this game? Fuck them up instead. That's what we need to with a lead. We've been way too passive in the past.
Am I overreacting by saying the first line has looked like the worst of the 4 tonight?
Idk, they look good to me, generating chances just not getting the bounces.
Yes, Marner and Tavares had Grade A chances but got robbed multiple times
Nah, you're right
No. Tbh marner is all alone out there. The other 2 are way too slow against top line of other teams
They’ve been getting a decent amount of chances and haven’t had ridiculous turnovers. They’re not as far ahead of the other lines as they should be but I don’t think they’re the worst one out there.
It's game 3, Tavares fucking died in April, and people are ready to trade him lol this is amazing
Right!? People in this sub have no clue.
No, they've been pretty ineffective.
Yes you are wrong
It's been the worst line in all 3 games. No overreaction. Spezza/Nylander lines are carrying this team
Kind of ridiculous that Nylander and Marner aren't great at drawing penalties.
They're just elite level at creating separation. Hard to draw penalties when no one can touch you.
why do you say that?
I recall seeing some stats in the off-season that the Leafs were definitively 31st in the league in penalties drawn over the last 3 seasons or something ridiculous
Like it was actually completely objective
Generally guys who hold the puck a lot draw a lot of penalties.
That was on Simmer. Close call. Good job Campbell to stay calm and carry on.
Campbell making his early Vezina case already.
Marner has looked way more engaged tonight and Tavares has had some good looks. Not bad considering I thought his career was over and that I watched him die in April
Campbell been decent tonight
The teams composure when transitioning from offense to defense leaves a lot to be desired
Loving this Campbell/Bishop goalie tandem!!!
I’d love to see the leafs make it a 3 goal game and give Bishop some ice time at the end.
I really hope they give him a few seconds of ice time just so he can say he played in an NHL game. What a story.
Only 1 goal allowed as a tandem
LOVE the SOOOUUUUP chant so much
Is there a link for those who can't watch?
Lilly baby. I forgive you but learn from that.
Bad pass to Lilly there
lily should still be able to make the play there, he was watching the pass the entire way
I mean that's not a terribly easy pass to take, on the back hand in your feet.
lily's right handed
Didn’t Simmonds do a bad one like that last game too?
Oh I don't know. Didn't get to watch the last game.
Leaf penalty coming up for sure
The leafs are rolling 4 lines way better than last year, I feel like I'm not nervous with any one line or D pair out there
