I… want to say this might be cultural? I was *really* surprised when I moved to Korea and no one I interacted with had this “sneezing etiquette” (there’s no general equivalent to “bless you” either, which was even more surprising). It’s a little gross in general, yeah (especially if you’re a wet sneezer), I don’t disagree with you, but I believe a common sentiment here is that if your sneeze is potentially infectious, you’d already be wearing a mask, which is just general public health etiquette to begin with, and your everyday sneezes from allergens or nerve spasms aren’t really going to cause anyone trouble in terms of harmful particles lingering in the air afterwards. As long as you’re not sneezing *at* someone and getting snot on them, I can’t recall an elbow/tissue/shirt ever being something deemed necessary. Totally fair, though. It’s definitely something I haven’t gotten used to and every time I see it I’m like “use your elbow, it’s *right there!*”

[deleted]

Yeah, I come from a Vietnamese immigrant family and nobody sneezes hygienically, they all cough into the air or into their hands. School was where I was taught how to properly cough and sneeze in public.

[deleted]

Not having an equivalent of “bless you” was more surprising? I would think that’s even more cultural

Dragonaichu

Mainly because I was always under the impression that that habit originated more from Christian superstition (“God bless you”) than from general American/Western culture, and with Christianity being the dominant religion in Korea for those who do practice, I always figured there would have been a similar saying in Korean—but people actually just pretend nothing happened. It’s interesting that I almost prefer it to the sort of obligatory and often unwanted attention a sneeze back in America garners, lol.

curiously_pussily

Actually, there are more atheist than Christians in SK. People tend to avoid religions because it is very common to be scammed. Also, there's this superstition as to why people say "God bless you/ Bless you." It's believed that your soul would leave the body when you sneeze or that you're nearing death. So, it's basically praying the person who sneezed to not die😃.

amillionstupidthings

Isnt it because theres a myth that your heart stops for a sec when you sneeze?

curiously_pussily

Same thing from what I originally said, just different. They say it because they you'll die so they're like preventing it to happen by "praying" that God will bless you to live longer.

Leading-Island-8133

I'm Muslim and that's what we believe too about life almost escaping that's why we say a prayer when we do sneeze and a person close by responds in similar fashion as Bless you.

Dragonaichu

> for those who do practice I’m aware. That’s why this was added.

RadioSilens

Korea really isn't a Christian country though. Although it's the largest religion for believers, only around 30% of the country is Christian. And culturally, Buddhism and Confucianism have had a bigger impact on society.

plushie_dreams

Christianity is one of the pillars of American/Western culture, as much as Confucian values form the basis of Korean/East Asian culture. Saying "bless you" after someone sneezes is as weird as saying "bless you" to someone who's coughing or vomiting.

bubblesthehorse

idk, i know it's christian in english but in my country there's a health related thing you say to it too.

princess_mikasa

yeah sometimes i'm annoyed when i'm obligated to say bless you to someone or thank you after being blessed, especially if there's multiple sneezes lol

NessieSenpai

100% cultural. I am in my 6th year of living here and there is a defo generation gap of basic hygiene things like sneezing, washing hands after using the toilet and SPITTING INDOORS. One of my friends who was born in Jeju but spent her teen years in NYC told me that the teaching of basic public hygiene and etiquette has only really been taught in Korea within the last 10 years or so...

OwlOfJune

I think the perception of hygiene is just different. In Korea constant bath/shower was a thing forever, brushing teeth is almost mandatory but for some reason sneezing etiquette was never existing much.

kokodrop

I’m 99% sure at least some of this is cultural because the sneezing into your sleeve/elbow thing was a campaign pushed in schools during the SARS epidemic, and it wouldn’t logically have been present in every country. There’s a generational divide in the West, too — the older generation is less likely to do this, since they wouldn’t have been taught.

Proerytroblast

Everyone has their own microflora and can carry infections without showing symptoms. Same way you should always treat everyone else as a potential disease spreader, people should treat you the same way so it’d be wise to respect others is what I’m thinking.

lavmal

It's completely cultural. I grew up in Europe and nobody had anything about "sneezing etiquette" and I only learned about the possibility of sneezing into your elbow when I moved to North America. Only with the pandemic is ti being introduced here. So going about how these people are doing it worse than you despite it not being a cultural thing in their country is pretty imperialist tbh

WonderlandAZ

Wait what? What country in Europe? 'Cause I grew up/live in Europe and I did have sneeze etiquette taught to me in school 🤔

lavmal

Netherlands and you had sneeze classes in school?? Besides, its almost like Europe is a whole ass continent with vastly different cultures

WonderlandAZ

No not litteral classes lol. Weird though, I'm from the Netherlands too. Maybe they just started to show kids years later? I don't know how much older you are than me though. Or it just depends on the school/teachers.

joys_red_dress

I learnt how to sneeze in school too in Europe.

I thought Mingyu... I always think of him sneezing in his hand then wiping the hand on one of his members. And sneezing in his hand midway through fixing Jun's hair then getting straight back to it😭

plushie_dreams

The videos comparing Vmin's sneezes are so funny

To be fair, seem like since covid, he has trying to control his sneezes. He nowadays cover his sneeze. I guess they all remind each other for sneeze etiquette since covid.

AhGaSeNation

When I read the title of this post ngl I thought it was a shitpost lol. I’m really amused by this rant haha. But I get it people are germaphobes and it’s true no one should be sneezing like that. It’s just funny to see someone rant about it.

wingsxxwings

Yeah lol, I totally get why it'd come across as shitpost, and tbh this is somewhat a light hearted post, just what comes out when you're bored during the weekend. And I mean, I've seen people rant about pettier non issues like the way some idols chew with their mouth open or talk while eating (which might be a cultural thing and maybe sneezing etiquette is also not taught into Korean kids but they should). I'm honestly not even a germaphobe, it's just that for some reason people sneezing/coughing like that kind of bothers me (not to the point of disliking the person obviously).

iSwedishVirus

I wish I hadn’t seen that..

snakesareracist

Honestly!! I don’t think I’m a Germaphobe but since 2020, I judge people SO HARD that don’t sneeze/cough into their elbow. Maybe it’s because I work with children and are actively teaching them to do those things, that I have no patience for grown adults who don’t.

dk0221

Yes!! Reminds me of a clip of Tae sneezing in JKs face during a photo shoot a few years ago. 🤢 not cute

dent_de_lion

THIS IS THE CLIP I WAS THINKING ABOUT! I thought, “I know y’all are close, but damn...”

plushybunnyheart

And jungkook pretend sneeze back at him!! 😭😭

Maya-euphoria

Lmfao yes Tae and his sneezes man.

Ken_ot7

God I hate this video. When I see it the only thing that comes to mind is how pissed I would’ve been and said fuck the camera, you cannot be serious bro 🤬

SoonyiHearto

Although it's disgusting and he could've still covered, I don't think he meant to sneeze in JKs face like that. For me, it seemed more like quick thinking on his part as to not sneeze on the members in front of him, he's wearing wardrobe for a photoshoot so he couldn't sneeze in his elbow and he forgot JK was behind him in that instant/he turned around too quickly or too much for it to end up on JK.

Ken_ot7

I understand he didn’t mean to do it. Doesn’t change the fact that it made my skin crawl and I would have had an immediate and horrible reaction 🥴 Hating the video doesn’t mean I have any ill feelings toward Tae for it, either. I just cannot physically handle it myself 🤣

tafattsbarn

Yeah, i would've had to go shower like immediately after because the gross factor and panic would be r e a l

SoonyiHearto

I gotchu I gotchu cause honestly same with an immediate horrible reaction followed with uh ew! 😂 I apologize for my response coming off as if you did, wasn't meaning to at all.

Ken_ot7

Right, my soul was either gonna leave my body or jump into hardcore defense mode. No worries! I was just explaining in case I came off too strong 😅

K0k0bop

Why are people mad ? I'm pretty sure they're saying sneezing etiquette is important for everybody, not just idols. But that since they are in the public, it's more noticeable and easier to comment on + this a rant page lol . Alsooo, it is important in the bigger picture because sneezing openly can lead to the spread of many sicknesses (covid...).

Monkey_theKinkyMonk

Ikr some people get sick easily (me, and usually communicable diseases) and it would really help a lot of people to have proper sneezing etiquette. It's not that hard to make it a habit if you actually care.

happytomeeetyou

This is a very big pet peeve of mine since I’m a germaphobe and I notice it every time it happens omg but it’s also just a basic hygienic practice like OP said!

Spiritual_Raisin_944

Same!! Everytime I watch ppl sneeze into their hands I gross out. Pre pandemic I never shake hands with anyone for that reason call me rude Idc lol

tafattsbarn

I don't shake hands with people either for the same reason lol, like people scratch their balls and sneeze/cough into their hands without washing after (i even knew a dude that didn't always wash his hands after peeing.....)??? Yeah you bet i'm not touching you because that's gross :'>

Theboredshrimp

that's why I don't eat out in my country, most cooks in restaurants/fast foods are men, I'm afraid of them not washing their hands or scratching their genitals like you said, no thanks. (my last experience was when I ordered a soup and I found hairs from the servers beard in it)

Noshib

Idk why people are mad at you, YOU'RE RIGHT 😭 I've seen so many idols do this and it grosses me out, like idk what's so hard Abt sneezing into your elbow 💀

dreamofdreamcatcher

Yeah I agree it might be a cultural thing, but even so sneezing etiquette varies a lot within one culture too lol And I guess today I learned that there are sneezing compilations out there 😭

No-Assumption-2747

First of all. There are sneezing compilations?

joys_red_dress

Yes there are very random but I think I've seen some before .

No-Assumption-2747

Damn sometimes I really forget how crazy we Kpop fans can be

Sleepdreamnobody

I'm pretty sure this is a cultural thing (correct me if I'm wrong, some people mentioned it) but yeah I agree it irks me, my mom would judge them if she saw how it is lmao, she's always on my butt for these types of things.

NewUselessAcc

At first I thought what you were saying is ridiculous, but now I agree. Even if you're not a germophobe it's...disgusting? If someone sneezed in their hand and then went to touch me or shake my hand that would be a big no no. Like if someone spit in their hand and went to touch you I'm sure you wouldn't want that. Nothing against any artists personally, I'd say it's disgusting no matter who did it

donlysky

Yes please!! I’ve noticed lots of idols do it and every time it happens something dies inside me

deklension_kills

I also get very uncomfortable when they sneeze on their hands or without covering, but you have to remember it's because we're socialised in cultures that are strict about sneezing etiquette. While it is changing, especially with covid prevention awareness, Korea did not emphasise sneezing etiquette like sneezing into the crook of your elbow. So it's great to want idols to change this habit, let's maybe not be so harsh on those that have done it, calling them disgusting and all that.

lemoniers

[op this is what you made me think of](https://twitter.com/bywoongie/status/1353623239247847426?s=21) i absolutely agree, a part of me dies when i see ANYONE sneezing into their hands 😭

princess_mikasa

all i can think about is [jongho sneezing loudly while ateez were meditating lmfao](https://youtu.be/FLAs2PH4XCU) bonus [he always sneezes at the best times](https://youtu.be/7nuAudsg_DM)

plushie_dreams

I remember Jay of Enhypen zooming off to a spot several meters away when he had to sneeze (AAAAA-CHOO!), then coming back into the camera frame like nothing happened. 😂 There was also a clip of this guy from Astro pointing and laughing at a string of snot hanging from his nose after he sneezed. Cha Eunwoo's 💀 reaction is seared into my mind.

Tiny_Beautiful_8395

Yeeessss! Sanha NEVER covers his mouth. I'm sprised none of his hyungs have said anything. Eunwoo is my reaction lol.

MelissaWebb

You are correct! On all fronts!

Monkey_theKinkyMonk

As someone who catches illness easily, gets sick *every year* (usually communicable diseases), is a chronic sneezer since childhood, and has allergies, this is also something that I find mildly annoying. I don't understand why some people in the comments make it seem like OP wants to burn the idols' houses because OP wants them to have better sneezing etiquette. Some people get sick easily but still have to go outside where other people go and it's not too demanding to make it a habit to have basic sneezing etiquette yourself so you don't throw your germs to everyone within 6 feet of you, or throw your germs into your hands and NOT cleaning them then spread your germs to other people by touching them.

nevroser

agree! Momo from Twice sneezes into the air all the time and it’s becoming a pet peeve of mine. i flinch everytime lol

walkdowntown

Honestly I opened this expecting cringe but OP just spit facts like these idols are spitting their germs!

trishlcn

Yes yes YES this is it! I agree with you so much because I was like I can’t be the only one thinking this way after seeing idols sneeze into their hands or out in the open 🥴 Proper sneezing etiquette is a must!

SydneyTeacake

I sneeze into my hands then wash them. Or sanitizer then wash when I can. How much warning do other people get that they can get a tissue first😭 I get like a second... Plus what if you sneeze into your elbow and it isn't a dry sneeze? (I know I'm probably putting too much thought into this but anyway, I think I prefer hands then wash the offending hands.)

Monkey_theKinkyMonk

Unfortunately, so many idols don't even clean their hands after they sneeze into them ;-; As someone who is a chronic "wet" sneezer and has allergies since childhood, I made it a habit to always bring a big handkerchief and sneeze into my elbows. I've practiced how to "delay" my sneezing so I can have a bit of time (about 3–5 seconds) to grab my handkerchief and sneeze into it. Whenever I can feel that I won't have much time to grab my handkerchief, I sneeze into my elbow. By then, my elbow and nose would be filled with snot so I wouldn't move my head for a short while and grab my handkerchief with my other hand, then wipe the snot from my nose and elbow. When I sneeze into my hands, my snot would get all over both of my hands so other people would see my snot hanging from my nose when I remove one hand to grab the handkerchief (and even if I try to cover my face with the other hand, the mucus is way too sticky so you can see the snot hanging from the other hand while I carefully remove it) and it's disgusting to grab my handkerchief from my pocket with a wet hand, so sneezing into my hands isn't ideal for me either.

leggoitzy

Thank for you the details, pretty en*gross*ing.

Acrobatic_End6355

It’s a culture thing. East Asians won’t cover random sneezes or coughs, but will wear masks when they have colds. People in the US (and I think the west in general) will cover their sneezes and coughs most of the time, but are much less likely to wear masks. Personally, if I had to choose one over the other, I’d choose the East Asian way.

Aggravating_Voice847

Sneeze like jaehyun, so be like jaehyun 😌

joys_red_dress

Jaehyun sneezes so loudly 💀.

cybermaria

I understand you, OP but it's a cultural thing. When I lived in Korea everyone sneezed like that. Sometimes it's so loud it scares me. I slowly started to adopt this way of sneezing as well (now that I'm back in Europe I cover my mouth again). I understand it's weird and maybe even disgusting for us, but it is normal for them. Like other people mentioned, they do wear a mask when they're feeling sick so it's not like they're ignorant about spreading germs. What's proper etiquette for us might not be for them.

ascjd

Yessss it bothers me every time I see people sneeze into their hands. Hopefully now that everyone's more aware of public health practices, we'll see less of that

cc-18

I mean I don't think they're taught the same etiquette in Korea and even where I live in the U.S. there are people who've been taught by their parents and tv shows to sneeze into your hand.

Dunkirb

I personally find people sneezing in their elbow or shirts disgusting, you are sneezing in yourself eeewww, use a tissue, excuse yourself out of the room or go face a wall. It's a cultural thing, and most of those sneezes, specially on compilations, are not virus related. When comparing infections rates in Korea with other places, their etiquette seems to work well enough. No need for them to learn anything.

diabolikal__

I completely agree lol can we also talk about eating etiquette? I find it so gross how they all eat with their mouth open, loudly and even talk at the same time

PeachsistersMoYeon

My mom would be mad if I ever do that lmao

staellarium

i’m not sure about korea but in certain parts of my culture it’s normal and encouraged to eat with your mouth open, i think it’s meant to signify that you enjoy your food or something? After i came to australia and went to school is when i learnt how ro eat with my mouth closed so what i’m saying is it might be a similar situation

diabolikal__

I had no idea! I mean, I always assumed that it was for a reason since every one does it, even on dramas... it is kinda shocking where I am from

Proerytroblast

Right?? I don’t wanna see what’s in your mouth, especially when you’re eating, shut it up, it’s gross.

real_highlight_reel

This is a Korean entertainment problem it seems to me and I really need them to rectify it. Like please carry tissue with you or a handkerchief instead of sneezing out in the open and picking at your noses 😭

yaois

I agree that it’s gross and people should practice hygienic sneezing, but this post comes off a bit western-centric (?). I don’t think it’s just an idol thing. I’m pretty sure it’s a cultural thing. There’s a reason why so many idols do it. Other cultures don’t have as many habits around sneezing as western ones do, so they aren’t taught to sneeze into their elbow and whatnot. When I was visiting family in another country they all chuckled at me and shrugged me off when I said they should sneeze into their elbows. No one does it there.

real_highlight_reel

I’m south Asian, from what I’ve seen my continent has many hygiene issues but we know to cover our face when sneezing, you’ll find the same in many other Asian countries as well. Not every thing can be hidden behind the veil of culture or geolocation, we all have to improve.

yaois

Yes I am familiar that different Asian cultures have different habits regarding hygiene, seeing that I am Asian as well. I don’t disagree, I think sneezing out in the open is gross too. And I didn’t say they shouldn’t have to change just because it’s their culture. I’m just saying OP shouldn’t place the blame (? For lack of better word) on the individual for sneezing out into the open, when it’s a cultural thing.

[deleted]

>I’m just saying OP shouldn’t place the blame (? For lack of better word) on the individual for sneezing out into the open, when it’s a cultural thing. I'm sorry but it doesn't matter if in their culture is common or not. Hygiene is hygiene everywhere you go, just because in some countries covering isn't normal it doesn't mean is right. In my country we have spitting on the floor. Is it a cultural thing? Yes. Is it hygienic? No. Your culture doesn't justify your hygiene habits.

yaois

I don’t see anywhere in my comment where I said culture justifies hygiene. Nor do I see anywhere in my comment where I said it’s right because it’s their culture. Reread the last sentence in my comment. That was the only point I was trying to make. No need to add your own interpretations of things that aren’t even there.

real_highlight_reel

> I’m just saying OP shouldn’t place the blame (? For lack of better word) on the individual for sneezing out into the open, when it’s a cultural thing. Ok thanks for your reply, I seem to have misconstrued your comment and do agree with this point

yaois

No problem, I could have been more clear too

real_highlight_reel

🤗

atztbz

Im half asian and i honestly don’t see a problem sneezing into the open as long as u know ur not sick and u don’t do it into another persons direction. I mean i sneeze alot from dust or animal allergies

bluejeansallday

You don’t know if you’re infected and don’t show symptoms yet or are a carrier of something that doesn’t make you sick but will make others ill. If there literally aren’t anyone around then sneeze everywhere you want I guess, but it should be a reflex to cover your mouth so you don’t have to think about it when you are near others

atztbz

Yeah but in that case talking loudly to someone can literally be just as bad and infectious

NDartsii

This is such an obscure thing to be upset about. 💀

xlkslb_ccdtks

In the middle of a pon de replay?

foreverspr1ng

I'm from Europe and pre-pandemic I never saw anyone sneeze into their elbows, we only were taught about that when it started and it was totally normal to sneeze into your hands or... turn your head to the side and sneeze into the air at most.

bluejeansallday

That must just be where you’re from. Where I am in Europe it was common practice even before the apocalypse

imabrightgreenpotato

Um... have you considered it might be cultural?? like if all idols do that there is probably a reason. I wasnt even bothered by it bc people in my country do the same

wingsxxwings

I did consider it was a cultural difference but at the end I didn't include it into my post because I don't want to blame an unsanitary practice on a country's culture. Plus it still doesn't excuse those practices, a change would still be nice. But can we really consider it cultural? The thing is that sneezing into your elbow is a relatively new practice, our ancestors didn't have this when they were kids either. There are still plenty of westerners that sneeze without the proper etiquette (even if they've heard about it). This is a 21 century practice. I don't live in a country known for its health care and I think we still had campaigns about it when I was younger, plus when you go to the hospital there are always infographics with sanitary advice on it. I have no idea where I really learnt it but it was definitely drilled into my mind. It's kind of like opening public restroom doors with a paper towel/foot/elbow, or closing the toilet's lid when flushing, not something I've known all my life but something I'm grateful to have learnt, and I don't think it has much to do with culture. It's always better to adopt better sanitary practices. I'm not placing the blame on the idols, they probably didn't know. Which is why I'm saying that it'd be nice if they had a small lesson that taught them better sanitary practices or I'd they were sent a pamphlet that taught sanitary practices. They're a public figure and as you said, if the people you see don't do it, you don't notice it.

dreamingfae

I understand but the same time lmao this is a ridiculous thing to pick at.

bluegladiolus

This is literally r/kpoprants like what did you expect 💀

dreamingfae

I didnt say I expected anything. I was simply stating how dumb this is.

wingsxxwings

Say you don't have proper sneezing etiquette without saying you don't have proper sneezing etiquette. Jk, I'm not going to cancel them for it lol, but it was just something I noticed and it is a pet peeve of mine, plus I was just bored. And tbf it's still something important! At least I hope this post served to remind others to sneeze properly.

okgambino

different societies have different social norms. you need to remember this when engaging with content from other countries. this is borderlining Orientalism in my opinion because there’s definitely things westerners do that people from different countries would also find “unhygienic” you just don’t realize it because it’s the culture you grew up in.

Lizziora

It's cultural OP, they always seem to be doing well a'yways and the fact that wear masks when they're sick since ages or whatever. I guess they're just stro'ger on that aspect. You can't just expect everyone to live with the same habits as you especially if they live on the other side of world and with a very different and distinct culture than ours. It's just not fair.

CurseOfIndecision

Seconded... What?

Leading-Island-8133

I completely agree with you. And before anyone disagrees or objects everything the OP said, these are just Idols,I have said it myself that they do alot of tacky things and aren't so polished to the point where we think they are perfect with impeccable manners. Also I'm surprised you didn't mention Taehyung in your list because he's a repeat offender and a loud one at that. Taehyung is my ultimate bias and I love that man like non other,I don't even have any wreckers because Tae has it all as far as I'm concerned but he needs to stop that loud sneezing and to cover his mouth while doing so too. Oh and stop kissing Yeontan then licking his lips afterwards too, there are health hazards to all these unhygienic practices/habits. Love Tae forever but we will continue to hold our faves accountable in everything they do.

eternal__ego

definitely agree i think it’s just not a thing in korea to do that bc they don’t say bless you there and also u would be having a mask on if u were contagious. it is lowkey gross to think about but i do think if they implemented the arm/elbow method more people would use it

vibewithwendy

As someone who is most hygienic in my family, I get called a clean freak for that. Seeing someone rant about it in here make me wanna laugh Idk why

mrbeansdaughter6

Unbelievable. So now we are bitching about the way idols sneeze as well.

wingsxxwings

This is r/kpoprants lmaooo, and I don't know about you but imo but this light hearted rant is better than bitching about how certain idols lack talent or whatever.

mrbeansdaughter6

I think it's better to criticize them for their job rather than their everyday habits like sneezing

wingsxxwings

Well sure, but tbf I also call my friends out when they sneeze incorrectly, it's a thing everyone should know, although I understand some people don't have access to that knowledge, it doesn't have anything to do with your job. Plus this is just hoping they teach them better habits, I am not individually calling them out, I'm not going to cancel them for this lol. I mean, my work had me take a course about sanitary practices (due COVID), and I work remotely! And not even in a health related area. I'd just hope companies educate them on better practices.

AgentMilkshake

Ngl this bothers me too lol some family members and previous classmates didn't cover their sneezing either and I got pissed to the point I'd get away from them or go outside because it would disgust me haha I've calmed down now (and obviously they learned to cover the hard way during the pandemic anyway), but it's still weird seeing idols sneezing... guess it's cultural or I'm a germophobe without realizing.

viciouswords

I was thinking about making a similar post because this bothers me so much. So bless you achoo~ I also hate seeing a person eat with their mouth open and yawn without covering their mouth, but sneezing and coughing like that is actually dangerous, I hate it so much this thread makes me wanna distance myself from kpop altogether lol (jk) (or am I..?)

Jim0ne

that's kinda shallow if u ask me

real_highlight_reel

How is it shallow to want people in the public eye, who many fans emulate, to have the basic etiquette and sense to be sanitary when it comes to sneezing?

Jim0ne

it's just sneezing 🤧 these people have to worry with every aspect of everything u wanna include sneeze now. Everything is just enough
