What’s this dip under the power button

What’s this dip under the power button

John-Alpha

It’s for mmWave Band 5g. The antenna needs a window because the signal can’t penetrate metal

ITstaph

Huh well this explains why my signal is shit if I wear gauntlets.

eraserking

You will show us these gauntlets…?

carlostsang

Thanos have the worst reception

WizdomHaggis

AnOriginalId

You're just holding it wrong /s

TxCoastal

harken back to the days of Iphone 4 lol

SigmaLance

I see what you did there lol.

[deleted]

The signal can’t penetrate anything. Really makes you wonder why mmWave is even a thing.

John-Alpha

Yeah honestly 5g isn’t mature enough yet. I think it was deployed a few years early. T-Mobile’s 600 MHz network is pretty good but that’s about it

[deleted]

Yeah we switched from Verizon to TMo and that 600 was awesome when we could get it. But it wasn’t everywhere all the time. Went back to Verizon for coverage and reliability.

John-Alpha

I’m actually about to switch back to Verizon for the same reason 😂 TMobile may be a lot faster and way more reliable, but there are dead spots in such weird places. I don’t recall ever not having signal with Verizon

reefcreatorsinpa

Has Verizon for 8 years now and I always have signal. Problem is there are a lot or times you still can’t use the internet or make a call. Never understood how I could have three bars but can’t make a call. I think it’s trickery sometimes.

Graylily

probably a CDMA/GSM issue. Verizon has been transitioning fully off cdma in 2030 but it has been around for so long an sit you drop off LTE and your using cdma you can get weird call/internet issue since it can't do both at the same time... but CDMA is what gave you the better signal and and inbetween zones, verizon bought out all that as other carriers switch to gsm towers fully years ago. gave verizon a huge connectivity boost as (if i remember correctly) cdma goes farther per tower and penetrated walls better and it was often installed in places like west virginia mountains by smaller carriers that were eventually gobbled up, It won't matter soon... by 2022 LTE will be the base tech and the cdma/gsm stuff will be turned off forever, but enjoy it while you can.

reefcreatorsinpa

I wouldn’t much care but being in rural central pa during the summer we lose power seems every storm and my house/shop is in a small valley between two hills with the tower on the next mt over. So without cable we have lucky 1-2 bars if I stand outside. So trying to call the power cable company is impossible to report the outage. Gonna have to look into a external antenna booster. I know they won’t give me what’s not there but “should” help make what is there stronger in the house if everything I read is correct or will all that be obsolete also?

Graylily

it depends on if they replace the towers you have with equivalent lte range systems. If you have a generator or ioc back up on your internet it will work without power unless it's out too, so you can still use wifi calling or voip during an outage if you have power to your home cable/fios modem/router.

davidscbirdsall

Yes. CDMA is an encrypted digital signal which isn’t affected by a lot of things that affect GSM.

TeckFire

Imagine this, if you will: You are shouting to a friend, but your friend can only whisper back. Hard to have a conversation that way. Well, unless you’re in a really quiet room. Which is the point. If you are in a room with a bunch of other people whispering, it’s hard to make out what they’re saying. They can all hear you, though. That’s how wireless works. If you’re getting multiple bars, but aren’t getting good speeds, it’s because the interference is too high for the antennas in your phone to send the data to the tower, but the tower can send it to you.

throwawaybcimhalfgay

I live in Santa Barbara County CA and have the same issue. Nationwide coverage 😂

AreWeNotDoinPhrasing

I’ve don’t the same thing 2 different times now with Verizon and T-Mobile. Verizon always comes out on top.

Sunny2121212

I was going to say i have t mobile in san antonio tx and its garbage i keeep it because its the cheapest

Cetheral

I’ve taken trips to San Antonio and I have AT&T and the 5G is garbage on it too

fatt_maddison

It all depends on where you are. I tried Verizon last year but got no signal in my office, across the parking lot from a Verizon store. You never know.

iNfAMOUS70702

I've had at&t since the Cingular days and because they're both GSM I gave TMobile a shot with a galaxy s20 I got for free...yeah no... There's a reason why Verizon and att charge more...and it's worth it

Select-Deer7961

Their mid band 5G is downright excellent. I’ve gotten 400-500Mbps, much faster than the 600mhz network, and any of their LTE I’ve used to date.

cryo

5G != mmWave. 5G is also a good replacement for LTE in general, as it's a more flexible standard with lower latency, among other things.

my_name_isnt_clever

Because once 5G is mature in X years there will still be people using old phones. Even if it takes 6 years for 5G to be a must have the 12 will still be supported by Apple.

ioncloud9

It’s physics. The frequency can’t go through anything.

Coderguy6000

It’s called marketing

Schwa142

mmWave was meant for super high speed, not penetration or distance. Sub6 gives a smaller increase in speed, but better distance and penetration with many of the 5G advantages.

[deleted]

We are aware.

Schwa142

Then why are you wondering why it's even a thing? It has its place.

[deleted]

You missed it.

Schwa142

What did I miss?

untitled-man

So you can do surgeries on it lmao

[deleted]

That’s funny. Those ads like remote surgery is a thing.

Brigadette

I mean remote surgery is very much a thing that [exists](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_surgery).

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Remote surgery](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_surgery)** >Remote surgery (also known as telesurgery) is the ability for a doctor to perform surgery on a patient even though they are not physically in the same location. It is a form of telepresence. A robot surgical system generally consists of one or more arms (controlled by the surgeon), a master controller (console), and a sensory system giving feedback to the user. Remote surgery combines elements of robotics, cutting-edge communication technology such as high-speed data connections and elements of management information systems. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/iphone/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

CCHTweaked

Are you confused grandma?

twistedfantasy15

To activate COVID obviously

[deleted]

Oh right. I forgot about the nanomachines in the vaccine that they’re gonna activate when they need to control us. Metal Gear Solid 4 is the shit.

ascagnel____

mmWave has a few cases where it'll be super useful, specifically where you have a lot of people closely packed together and with line-of-sight to a nearby antenna. Think busy street corners and sports stadia.

[deleted]

Totally

Brigadette

It’s for sporting events and large gatherings mostly. Maaaaybe for dense cities where putting a tower in every block is financially viable.

Ruptured_testicle

Reminds me of the old iPod touches! The black plastic bit on the back was for the WiFi and Bluetooth to get through the back of the iPod, since they can’t get through metal

SigmaLance

The OG iPhone was designed like this as well.

FangFingersss

Does a plastic case decrease strength?

John-Alpha

Yes, anything in its way will decrease signal strength

FangFingersss

Significantly or just slightly?

andrewpranoto

Plastic & Glass usually are better in term of signal pass thru. That’s why in metal phone there will always be an antena band made from plastic

Guacamole_Queso

What if you slap a case over it? 🤔

MarioIsPleb

As long as the case isn’t metal it doesn’t matter. It is just a window of *not metal* material so the cell signal can get through.

ioncloud9

It can’t penetrate anything. So good luck ever using it unless you are standing right in front of an antenna and there is nothing in the way.

MoewCP

Wait I always thought it had to do with MagSafe since it’s the same shape as the iPad pencil connector

SharkDad20

Sometimes we’re just wrong

DavidNipondeCarlos

Case and point, go uncovered.

markchu_125

Yep but that doesn’t appear in all countries. I live in Singpaore and the iPhone 12 series here don’t have that

my_name_isnt_clever

mmWave 5G is only on the US iPhone models.

Gharris86

Mmwave antenna

AmericanMeltdown

M’wave *tips antenna*

NeatFool

😂

actual-abhay

I wonder if they could have used power button as the antenna... Would it work??

AceroInoxidable

Moreover: would we break it?

sinisterpuppy94

I’d give you gold if I wasn’t broke

🤣

cum-bubbles6969

OIL_99

Mmmmmm… MmWave antenna

wetmagician

Mmlady

SSBAamxr

Ah okay was really confused thanks for clearing that up

MDestroyer25

Millimetre wave support. It enables “faster 5g speeds”

Select-Deer7961

Not sure why you put that in quotes. If you connect to mmWave your download speed is typically over 1000Mb/s It’s as fast as it gets for real world cellphone speeds.

dcdttu

You’re not wrong, but T-Mobile mid-band 5G gets me around a gig at times. It’s impressive.

Peterspickledpepper-

Verizon’s 5G is shit in NY/CT. Only place I’ve ever gotten UWB is SLC airport.

dcdttu

Haha that’s the one place I saw it in action as well, on my friend’s phone. UW has very limited range, and virtually zero building penetration. Verizon’s other 5G is somewhat bandwidth limited. T-Mobile, on the other hand, is loaded with bandwidth. Now, if they can just figure out how to use it so it’s at least giving the same coverage as their pre-5G LTE network, but that remains to be seen.

riverturtle

Interesting, guess I’ll check that out next time I go to the airport haha

Brammmy

Ha! T-MOBILE 5G MIGHT get me thirteen and they always have an excuse. Edit: took a full to minutes just to post this.

dcdttu

Sounds like low-band 5G. Great signal, shit throughput.

Brammmy

You should see the crap 4G. Their network is crap here. Half the time I can't hear the person I call cause the down band sucks

MDestroyer25

No I put it in quotes to say that that source isn’t mine. It’s apples.. they said that in the event if I’m not wrong sorry lol if I’m wrong haha

antney0615

I clocked “986 Mb/s” in the parking lot of the “Apple Store” and was “thrilled and scared” at the same time because, surely, being exposed to that signal was triggering my cells to turn into viruses like all those Facebook experts said they would. I’m just “making fun” of the quotation marks person, LOL.

r00tie

It enables faster 5G speeds as long as you also pay extra on a certain companies unlimited plan *cough* VZW *cough*

Akrevics

Also ‘Rona emitter. Yes, /s

[deleted]

It’s not new though. They had it last year too

Truecoat

It looks a lot like the charging magnet holder for the Apple Pencil on my IPad Air.

thefourthchime

Am I the only one who doesn’t get the big deal with mm 5g on a phone? I’ll get slightly better browsing speed, ok. Sure, but it’s also super finicky. I’ve been under an antenna and seen the signal come and go. The stuff you can do that’s really cool, like downloading a movie in 10s, how often does that come up?

Kdial2002

It’s a 5G antenna. If you are somewhere other than the US it’s very likely that it won’t have that

InfosecPenguin

If I remember currently it's the 5G antenna. I may be wrong though

SSBAamxr

Ah okay thanks

chris_ro

Why downvote this? He had a question and was grated for the answer…

yk6899

This is Reddit, people downvote everything

Achmetch

Something you can very easily find by just checking apple’s website

Replicaindigo

Downvoted likely because he’s asking this implying it’s new to iPhone 13 when in fact that was there since iPhone 12 and all he had to do was google it.

Dr_Findro

He’s not implying that at all. He didn’t know something

Determined_Cucumber

Hilariously either way he used the internet to ask a question. Getting it from Apple or Reddit, he still got his question answered.

SSBAamxr

Sorry I have an iPhone 12 and it doesn’t have it. Maybe Apple shouldn’t put these images on the UK site

ocean_life_

Apple fuckboys are so pretentious LMFAO. How dare this random guy hasn’t watched every single Apple keynote and doesn’t keep up with iPhone news!!! Everyone knows this piece is the 5G antenna!

Achmetch

It takes 10 seconds to scroll to the bottom of the product information page where it shows what it is. Imagine If everyone made a post about it

Fix0000

Yes but only in the USA American Market

LookAtTheFlowers

Hmm, 5G. So is this the antenna that turns you gay or gives you COVID? /s

yjvm2cb

I hope it improves the 5G signal strength tbh. Every time I have 5g on my 12 pro things take foreeevvveerrr to load, then I switch to LTE and it's almost instant.

Redsfan27

This probably has more to do with how your provider has their 5G set up than the signal in the phone. Verizon?

yjvm2cb

T mobile

TWYFAN97

That’s been there since the 12 series for 5G, it’s the mmW antenna. Will only be present in US models.

SSBAamxr

Ah I’m in the UK but my iPhone 12 doesn’t have it that’s why I was confused

fire2day

Canada here, my 12 Pro doesn't have it either.

Jeancopain

Huh echt?? Hoe komt dat dan? Heb je hem in Nederland gekocht? Edit: welk model? De 12 Pro Max die ik heb heeft het niet

_3cock_

I believe the 13 series here will have it as Apple are working with networks to facilitate mmwave.

dahliamma

It won’t, [mmWave (bands n258, n260 and n261) is still exclusive to the US model](https://www.apple.com/iphone/cellular/).

sickdoggo

Only in USA

eekaj01

It’s only in certain regions, iPhones sold in Australia doesn’t have this mmWave

🤣 from a person from Australia this made my day better 🤣 Happy cake day 🎂😃

djgrahamj

It connects to your vaccine for extra 5Gs

WaddleUrbian

As people said, is the antenna, but lots of countries doesn’t have that dip

planefan001

MmWave antenna. That’s the type of 5G that gets the gigabit speeds.

MrTuxedoWilliams

That’s where they track you!

L0rdLogan

5G antenna for mmWave in the U.S

Amens

I have seen this model(12 pro max) sold by EE network in uk as well.

[deleted]

L0rdLogan

To my knowledge no other country uses mmWave apart from the U.S that’s actively deploying it anyway

fishtaco334

It’s the mmWave antenna, as already said. I believe it's only there on the US models, since the other doesn't support mmWave.

WannabeModder123

True, international variants do not have that antenna

MunustryofDifunse

It’s a scratch and sniff. Each colour has a different scent

evenifoutside

The one on the Pacific Blue iPhone 12 Pro smells like Barramundi.

furou

That’s my favorite type of mundi.

That’s the pizza dispenser

idrathernotplz

Not a dip, 5g antenna.

TwithJAM

The same thing as it is on the iPhone 12’s. The 5G band

rio-doro

It‘s an 5G antenna for the united states. This was the same at the iPhone 12 models. Only the us versions have this extra antenna.

XSSpants

ultra high frequency window. They *should* put a touchID sensor in there like my old sony phone

Background_Phase5701

It’s millermeter wave 5G jus faster 5g but it’s only available in American made iPhones

scrottyjet

It’s for the Apple Pencil mini ™️

vs424reddit

Cum socket

TerrarianLad

That’s where uncle sleeps

werdmouf

mmWave. You’ll probably never use it.

lukelallier

Says who. I use mmWave 5G every single day.

XSSpants

well, most of us don't work in stadiums or whatever commonly has mmWave deployed. I'm lucky if I get normal freq 5G at all. LTE still common.

GiaCKomo

an antenna part that is present only on US iPhones, here in europe they don’t have it

Playful-Killa

and as a result has much worse 5g reception. And also [regulatory logos](https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-Apple-iPhone-12-series-is-not-only-more-expensive-in-Europe-with-slower-5G-but-it-is-also-uglier.498967.0.html) on the sides

5G antenna

WINH4X

How come when you go to the top of the screen and click the “Object” button, it shows a picture of an iPhone instead of a woman? :(

lemonchoosle

Ah the yearly question!

applesuperfan

That’s the millimetre wave antennae for millimetre wave 5G. It’s in that same spot on iPhone 12 models as well.

Mikuka_G

No mmWave in UK 🤬

SixtyForceDemon

It’s an antenna. Like the thin line you see on the top by the camera.

General_Kenobi07

Millimeter wave cutout

Ricky_RZ

It is an antenna since the 5G signals have pretty poor penetrative qualities, thus necessitating a large cutout

Motleyk1981

For the 5G

Is that the Bill Gates chip sensor ?

johannous

5G Antenna

erasst1

The best place for this. Because I never hold my phone on the right side 😂

XQuikX

If you use full body case to protect your phone it will decrease signal strength

freediverx01

Antenna window

AiKai7

I’ve always thought that was the sim card slot wow guess not

FlexedMemes

Looks like a fingerprint scanner but it could be a 5g antenna because the fingerprint sensor might be in the screen or power button

Boredguy113

I got the twelve and I haven’t this thing

JustNiklPikL

Only USA models have the antenna in there, models sold outside the USA it’s just empty.

MonkeyMeow22

It’s for a Apple Pencil

Boson347

Apple Pencil. Jk. Who wants a stylus? Yuck.
