That number in the title is always changing
Its on the internet, so its must be true!
I've read it in at least five billion posts.
"The factual accuracy of posts on the Internet, is difficult to assess"
Then why to they dominate every lobster post we see on Reddit.
Odds of noticing the number in the title is bullshit: 1 in 2.
70% of statistics are made up on the spot
It's actually 73.45%
No no no, its 67.937%
There is a 59.4% chance that both of you are righr
That's because statistics quoted on the internet are wrong 83% of the time.
This seems high.
Ooo…matching rubber bands
I worked on a lobster boat and have seen a couple of these along with albino ones, orange ones and chimeras. Its not super common but they pop up in the traps here and there
Just block every tool that posts this trash.
Even if it's accurate, considering how many lobsters are caught, 1/2,000,000 isn't that impressive.
Seems to happen all the time here
There are 40 lobster plants on the east coast between Canada and the USA that each process between 10,000 and 75,000 lobsters per day. During peak season they all usually operate 6 days a week.
So you'd expect to find a 1 in 2,000,000 lobster roughly every day and a half if you just take into account the lobsters fished for the plants and not direct to market lobsters.
Thats a lot of lob.
Idk why but this just cracks me up
I was wondering what the production numbers were like. Thanks for sharing.
Was gonna say, this gets posted more a week than these things are found in years.
The chance of it being posted to reddit is 1 in 1
The amount of times you see this picture on reddit, you'd think catching one of these is way more common than it actually is.
There are over a million lobster pulled from the north Atlantic everyday in peaks season, so it is rare as far as the lobster are concerned but also frequent due to the scale of our fishing.
It's like a shiny pokemon
The fishing equivalent to finding a 1st edition holographic Charizard
Throw it back?
"Super rare lobster found"
"Let's kill it"
Not for no reason! Let’s eat it.
I’ve caught one off the coast of New Hampshire and donated it to a wildlife center that has touch tanks and that type of stuff.
…and we ate it. Thank you for your service.
The only reason you need to throw it back is if it had eggs on it or it is too big (there is an upper size limit).
Because those are the literal rules for weather or not you need to throw a lobster back.
It gets to continue living the rest of its life while the rest get condemed to be boiled alive just because of the color of its exterior? THATS RACISTS /s (with a hint of truth)
Does it still turn red after cooking?
Yes - when cooked the proteins that astaxanthin bind to are destroyed so the pigment shows up in its natural state, a bright red. According to google :)
Huh, if they stayed blue even after cooking i bet the price for one would be astronomically high
Sell it to the Japanese. No cooking required.
Nah its 1 in 8192
I think you should look into the masuda method
It is super rare! Let's catch it and sell it! People are fucked.
Not this fucker again. I bet he just wants to stay in the ocean.
Let it go
should throw it back 🦞
So let's put rubber bands around his arms and watch him die!
It's a Lobsmurf!
Is the meat inside white or does it have a BluTack hue to it?
When a lobster fucks a smurf this is what happens.
I hope the fisherman brings it to an aquarium or something.
It belongs in a museum!
I’m from a long line of lobster fishermen/women. Around here, we do send the rare ones to aquariums. There are also yellow lobsters, and a wicked cool iridescent type, although I have yet to see the iridescent in person. My mother once caught one with coloring that was perfectly divided vertically down its back— one half was blue, the other the more usual color. She donated him to the aquarium.
Using the term “wicked cool” confirms your claimed lineage of lobster fisher men/women
They never do, they eat it because they really aren't that rare relative to how many lobsters are caught and sold each year. They're like a fisherman's trophy.
Yeah but I’ve seen like 100 of these on Reddit so it’s about 1 in 5.
Fisherman should stick the lottery on tonight too then
Lobster numbers are increasing in Canadian water though.
They had a record year in Maine around 2012 I think but it's been declining ever since. Canadian lobster season is much shorter so over fishing isn't much of a concern. The price will have to go up if their number diminish. I'm sure there is an upper limit for what they can thrive in and what they can survive in. Their population will likely move north for the time being.
10 years ago climate change deniers had a leg to stand on because the effects weren't that noticable to average folks but fishermen see it, farmers see it and now those average folks will have a hard time not seeing it. Look at Lynette BC Canada last week for example.
9/10 would eat.
i see it on reddit so often that i have to believe its less than that.
The odds of seeing this same type post over and over again are 2,000,000 to 1
They should put it back then there might be more blue ones
So kill it?
Definition of Diamond Hands!
Must of invested in AMC and GME
and yet it's still got the rubber bands to be consumed instead of thrown back, like damn
Really puts into perspective the amount of lobster we pull up from the ocean with how often this is posted 😄
Don’t take the blue pill neo.
Put the damn thing back then
So are they throwing it back or not?
That’s a familiar.
One in two million. And you kill it.
I got you blue
They are not rare at all... I see them on Reddit all the time
or if you buy one at the pet store, your odds can be 1:1
Humans: Look at this rare animal, it soooooo rare, wow!!
Also humans: Anyway, let's eat!
How much would that go for at an auction house? Just imagine making that into a dish
Oh no I thought we were done with the lobster posts
So you're saying there's a chance... YES!
the chances of me eating this with garlic butter is 100%/100%
Wait, is this for real? Are you sure it's not an instagram/facetune lobster?
Shiny pokemon are cool
Why not keep Mr. blue lobster and breed him. Over several generations the recessive blue trait can be fixed and make ton-o-money selling blue lobsters
A bar near me got one delivered!
Lol they bout scam some rich person for a sea rodent
Thats like pulling a Vader meditation Chamber card in StarWars Card Trader.
Fun fact : White , Red , Gold and Multiple corlored lobster exist
How's it taste?
Kinda looks like a balloon
I'm personally disgusted that we catch so many lobsters that they've started to evolve their natural camouflage, and match the colour of the elastic bands we use on them. A real shame.
"Rare blue lobster caught in Maine..."
...and it was absolutely delicious.
Careful, don’t let PETA know we caught this, or they’ll come and kill it while claiming they’re “freeing” it.
Inbred or just living too close to a silver mine?
That reminds of the Brave Wilderness episode where they found that rare blue crayfish.
Really? Because I feel like I’ve seen a few different posts of blue lobsters. Chances gotta be better than that.
I hope he doesn’t get eaten
Gulf of maine...? Lol no. Maine's rocky coast :)
the most beautiful cockroach of the sea 💚
Quick get him a blanket!
Shiny pokemon, nice find
“So what you’re saying is there’s a chance!”
Will it be eaten or made into a pet?
I wish they'd put it back so they'd be less rare...
This is the way
He was just painted with Tamiya X-23.
My mum had a pet blue lobster then it escaped through the floorboards before i was born
Nice, a Shiny one!
Finds rare lobster
**roasts it alive**
Well shit, put him back
So beautiful. Want to make it into a living necklace
I wonder if they could breed a pair of them. I also wonder what the result could be if they bred one with a "cotton candy" lobster.
adding him/her to my dream zoo of colorful lobsters
This feels like one of those moments where you need to verify “blue lobster” in google only to find a more horrifying version that can never be erased from your mind.
Blue heat lobster
1 in 2,000,000 and posted 2,000,000 times
Weird, it seems to show up on reddit 1 in 10 days, and this exact one [8 hours before you posted it](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/ofxl3n/rare_blue_lobster_caught_in_the_gulf_of_maine_the/)
Yes sure, 1 in 2000000, but I see every few days a new one here on Reddit....
Chances on internet are 1:3 though
I know these fancy lobsters are super rare, but I feel like one gets posted every other day. I do like the analogy I heard once about these being like a real life equivalent of finding a shiny Pokemon.
but posted on reddit 1 in 100 posts
Someone had too much Nuka-Cola Quantum
Hopefully they let it back. Otherwise the chance of this re-occurring will be 1:2,000,000\^2.
^(I know, I know... the math is fsck'd-up, but hey...) /j
Another fu*king blue lobster post 🤯
ah so its a shiny pokemon
It'd be cool if they got a few and bred for this aberration
Well I’m seeing a lot of these caught on Reddit lately your stat might be wrong
My inner child can imagine it tastes like blueberries.
Yet the chances of this picture showing up on reddit any random day seems to be about 1/1.
So, exactly like fishing for rares in world of warcraft
Catch one of those every other year in Nova Scotia, show me a red or half and half. couldn’t even get an original photo for the post.
I was ate a blue lobster. It tastes the same as a regular lobster.
anyone have a picture of one of these lucky bastards cooked?
i have the perfect old lady white and blue plates to put that thing on. Wouldnt eat, thats ocean roaches.
These blue lobsters gets posted every week. Either blue lobster are not that rare, or they are pulling up billions of lobsters each day.
