I think the second photo is great, and about where an archivist would draw the line. It's not restoration once you're going beyond the original (colouration, noise reduction etc). Impressive work though, well done!
Thank you so much! Different people have different definitions on photo restoration.
Some people say that photo restoration is staying as close to original as it even possible. Other, include some photo colorization and and editing to go beyond what original photo had.
You can agree, that original photo was taken from reality. And since reality have colours adding them back shouldn't be problem too 🙂
Thank you! No secret things. Just Photoshop.
1. Picked one channel with clearest details
2. Used Dust & Scratches filter to locally remove particles and damage
3. Manually removed the damaged with the Clone Stamp and Spot Healing Brush tools
4. Drew back details that were faded
5. Polished results with some AI
Thank you! There are quite a lot of small things off that pile up, but yes, I just decided I can't spend more time on this photo.
I thought that given original is already good enough
Thank you! Yes, photo restoration can more or less realistic when you have a chance to choose.
But, when you have photo like this you either paint details back or just leave it, since there were no original details left to begin with
Thank you, I would note it. After some point I just stopped working on it, even though I still saw some improvement possibilities, I just couldn't spent more time on it

Restoration falls in uncanny valley for me
Well, result might be not 100% accurate and somewhat unnatural, but given the original quality I think outcome is good

Wow, I have some family photos that are that faded -- what did you use to restore this one?

The lighting is a little off... But considering the starting point you've done an amazing job

Fantastic skill and dedication but it's a fine line between a restored photo and a digital painting

Wow! Talk about ‘something from nothing’.
Thank you! Yes, this one was difficult and time consuming, but I generally like the outcome!
I prefer the mono one as it’s more in keeping with the obvious period of the original. Good work
Thank you! I do both versions, for people that prefer color or monochromatic images
"And here madam you'll see all the fucks I give, I do hope it's to your liking"
Looks like not even one was given
The joke
Somehow she looks a bit asien now
Don't really see it, but it happens sometimes even with people in real life, so nothing strange
reminds me of [Jesus](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/ykyww/an_old_church_in_spain_needed_to_restore_a_worn/)
Could be. They had better "start", that's why this art restoration turned out **so well**!
Very cool, but her thumb looks like a hot dog...

Definitely got some Everything Everywhere All At Once vibes in that regard.
Looks like pee wee Herman with a wig..
Could be, thank anyways

Yeah, I noticed it too after posting. After you work 5+ hours straight in something you start to miss some details just because you got used and tired
