Around the year 2000, Howard absolutely despised Bruce Springsteen and that's where some of that stemmed from. First, you'd need to understand the killing of Amadou Diallo. Amadou Diallo was a Guinean immigrant standing in the vestibule of his Bronx building around 1:00 am when an unmarked car with plain clothes officers stopped in front of the building. Officers claimed he matched the description of a serial rapist reported over a year prior. An officer yelled Amadou had a gun and they proceeded to fire 41 shots. Upon a search, they found no gun nor was Amadou anyone they were looking for. It's believed an officer mistook his wallet for a weapon. The officers were arrested but eventually acquitted of all charges. Amadou had committed no crime. Springsteen wrote a song about the killing titled [41 Shots](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDtwcpRdMmw), later renamed to American Skin. The musician was attacked by New York police and mayor Rudy Giuliani over the track. The PBA called for a boycott of his shows and threatened to not provide security for his concerts. Bob Lucente, the president of the New York chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, called Springsteen a “floating fag.” If there were two things Howard loved, it was the police and Rudy Giuliani. "... It's a disgusting song. It's ridiculous." Howard said. He proceeded to call him a pussy and Robin said Bruce had no right to speak about the events. "I wouldn't even go to a Bruce Springsteen concert," he continued. "He's a dickhead. He's a creep." Robin asked where are the songs for the cops who die in the line of duty. "He'll never write one. That's not popular. It's not a popular liberal cause," Howard shot back. He continued, "The Puerto Rican's and the black people are screaming all the time, [accent] 'The cops they treat us wrong.' Well, yeah. If you're misbehaving you're supposed to get beaten, you fool. It's good for you. It's good to take a beating... 41 shots? It should have been 85 shots. Make sure the guy is dead... Bruce is a piece of garbage who should really retire... He should rot in that mansion of his." Years later at Sirius, Howard brought up the controversy again while interviewing Springsteen fan and sports commentator "Mad Dog" Chris Russo. "Do you mind when Bruce gets political and talks about 57 shots?," Howard asked. Russo, Artie and Howard all agreed that they didn't like when Springsteen would get "political" with his music. I'm more of a band man myself like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, AC/DC, Queen... Only old school rock solo artist I'm big fans of would be like Bowie, Hendrix and Elton, maybe a couple others... Like I'm not a big Dylan (Man in the Mirror is one of my favorite tracks but I strongly tie that to The Big Lebowski), Springsteen or Joel fan personally. To each is own and that's fine, just don't be like Howard and hate on someone one year then blow them the next because they'll give you the time of day...

Maybe it's because I grew up in the 80s. I wouldn't necessarily say it's better than Darkness or The River or Tunnel of Love or any of the older albums but I'd say it's as good. I'd also say it's Way better than anything after Tunnel of Love

Downbound Train, Cover Me, My Hometown, Working on the Highway, Darlington County, I'm Going Down, I'm on Fire-all masterpieces and imo better than anything on those albums you mentioned. Not saying their bad. BITUSA as whole would definitely be ahead of those in my Springsteen desert island album list

Howard used to give a hard time to Ross Zapen (however his last name is spelled), because he would go to every concert, and not want to know the set list, so it could be a surprise. Howard said he liked Springsteen, but he wasn't a fan. (Howard took the tern fan literally, meaning fanatical). He preferred Billy Joel. (Even before he was on the show). Artie was a big fan, so Bruce was talked about a lot. I'm sure Howard probably made fun of Gary of he went during the week, especially if he had forgotten to do something or done something wrong the day after going to a concert.

Well, the way he talks about him now, think you could count Howard as a "fan" these days

That’s the best thing about Howard he is real. He shows his vulnerabilities, fears, narcissism, and inconsistencies. Some may think he’s fake or hypocritical but for an entertainer he’s genuine.

My impression has always been that Howard was a longtime fan, but attacked Springsteen for reasons unrelated to music. I don't believe that Springsteen would do the show because of the racial elements (blackface and what-not). As a result, Stern attacked in much the same way he did when Bon Jovi stopped doing the show. I also think in the 90's, Howard considered himself too cool for Springsteen.
