Best of luck this season, Chara. Hope to see you again next year.

UsedToBeBradfordTwo

Seinfeld was the number one watched show on TV during Chara’s rookie season

CannedMango

For Jagr it was Cheers.

Wolfpack34

I feel so old

vinoa

Cheers the Vaudeville show

a-rockavich

It's still the number one show in my heart.

UsedToBeBradfordTwo

Agreed. 800 channels and countless streaming services available? You’ll still catch me watching Seinfeld at 11pm

ih8pod6

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

tubbyraincloud

A few years ago there was this website that just played Seinfeld 24/7 through the whole series it was so great. You could just put it on whenever and there would be a different episode on. I was so bummed when it got shut down.

SickOffYourMudPie

You can just download it…

Garpolstaine

Sergei Samsanov? Had no idea he won the Calder

touchable

He also retired 10 years ago after a relatively productive career. That kind of puts Chara's career into perspective.

ButtholeQuiver

I doubt a good portion of this sub remembers Samsonov, haha

Tniz15

Why wouldn’t I know who Washington’s goalie is? /s

standtallnofall

Boston picked Thornton that same year.

TheSewallSyrum

Samsonov was part of that package that sent Glen Wesley to Hartford for three first round picks in 95, 96, 97. Samsonov was the best of those three...

SkilledB

Samsonov was fucking smooth. Still remember seeing him when I saw some of my first NHL games at seven years old.

FromFluffToBuff

Too bad his wrists were made of pretzels.

WyattfuckinEarp

Had him on my wall as a kid. Bourque was my hero, but Samaonov's hands were something else.

WadeGertzky

Loved him in our playoff run in 06

UncleBogo

If this is the right Samsonov, I think I remember him playing with the Detroit Vipers in the IHL.

InItToWinItLikeYzrmn

Yes, part of the list of famous former Detroit Vipers like [Miroslav Satan, Petr Sykora, Peter Bondra and Gordie Howe](https://www.nhl.com/news/sunday-long-read-forgotten-vipers-rocked-detroit/c-756771)

rc522878

I still am bitter over that 3OT goal Sykora scored in game 5 of the 08 finals. Wings still won in the next game but it would have been awesome if they won at home. Crowd was wild after the Rafalski goal.

UncleBogo

I remember watching Manitoba Moose games and wishing he was on our team.

Menace_from_Nevis

I got NHL 2000 as a kid, played as Boston. That guy was a goalscoring machine, my favourite together with Jason Allison. I still got a couple of his cards at my parents house :)

TechnicalDictator

At least during his best years. He was a good depth guy for a while after he left Boston, but man was he good in the late 90s-early 2000s

Ohmancmon

Dude played for the Detroit vipers no?? I am positive I got to witness that dude play

admirable_axolotl

He was my hockey star crush as an elementary school kid that could barely skate and didn’t know what girls’ hockey leagues were. Feel old thinking about that lol.

MrWermHatsWormHat

Not only do I remember him, he lived down a few blocks.

Lechuga_Libre

Graphic design is my passion

standtallnofall

haha unfortunately, it is not mine.

Lechuga_Libre

Just bustin' your balls, OP. Perfectly serviceable and informative. You're killin it buddy.

standtallnofall

I know, I took no offense. I wish I was better at it.

upvoter222

For any confused Elton John fans, the #1 song around the time of Chara's debut was *Candle in the Wind 1997 / Something About the Way You Look Tonight*. Chara was not playing back when the original version of *Candle in the Wind* came out in 1974. Nobody plays for that long ^^unless ^^Jagr ^^does ^^it .

standtallnofall

I could be wrong but wasn't the 1997 version for the passing of Princess Diana?

upvoter222

That is correct.

standtallnofall

That track started my love for Elton John. My wife and I are actually expecting our first son this week or next. We named him Benjamin Jett. Mostly because of Bennie & the Jets but also the Winnipeg Jets and in the Sandlot, his name is Benny "the Jet" Rodriguez.

PCLoadLetter-WTF

Wait, Mario played with Crosby but was inducted into the HOF Chara's rookie year? Has anyone else been an active HOFer for several seasons?

FesteringLion

Guy Lafleur. Both retired got inducted and came back later. There could be more, but those are the two I know... Jaques Plante maybe? I think he was retired before coming back to play for St, Louis, not sure if he was in the Hall or not.

standtallnofall

Geordie Howe was inducted in 1972 but played in 79/80. I believe it was just the three of them.

FesteringLion

Gah! How did I forget Howe?!!

CanadianODST2

Howe did I forget Howe?!!\* ftfy

touchable

Howe did I forget??

jokinghazard

He retired briefly when he was diagnosed with leukemia if I'm remembering right. In the years after they inducted him to the HHOF, he became part of Penguins ownership, them kicked leukemia's ass and came back to the NHL and dominated for another 3 or 4 years.

Chippopotanuse

I love that you can be an active HOF player in NHL. Wish the other leagues would do that.

cb148

The Jackal was underrated. Tell Declan he can’t protect his women. Also featured a young Jack Black, basically guesstimation.

standtallnofall

I appreciate you but completely disagree. The Jackal was a complete mess and it changed Caton-Jones' career forever. His first handful of films were great. Scandal was legitimately amazing as were Memphis Belle and This Boy's Life. Then, he made the Jackal which was a trainwreck and it all went downhill from there. Basic Instinct 2 is perhaps in the worst 10 movies I've ever seen and Asher was vomit-inducing.

waterontheknee

Yes! So underrated!

whatlineisitanyway

I still remember as a little kid seeing in ESPN the magazine a full two page (I think) comparison with him next to Theo Flurey and being like Wow that is a huge hockey player.

FesteringLion

Are you sure it was Fleury? I remember a pic of him next to his own teammate Ziggy Palffy... But thinking on it a bit longer I think that one was in the Hockey News.

JD9940

I remember that comparison being made in Sports Illustrated For Kids with Palffy

jackwoww

Is there an N64 rendering of Chara?

shotmeorishotyou

[Yup](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/207/210/b22.jpg)

meatbaggitybag

There will never be a better goalie than Hasek in his prime, and I'll stand firm on that to the end of time.

jdt2313

I don't know about ever, but there hasn't been one yet

standtallnofall

I was born in '87 and it's incredible just how much the quality of the NHL has grown, specifically the net-minders. If prime Hasek wasn't the best (which I agree with you, he was), he's at least in good company with Roy, Brodeur, Luongo, Lundqvist. And Bucky of course ;)

MankuyRLaffy

He led the league in losses once, he can't be that good /s

Squirrellybot

🎵What goes around comes around🎵

DrDisastor

I remember watching him play in Kentucky. Its been a while.

Chippopotanuse

“Mario Lemieux had just entered the HOF” Shit….has it been THAT long since Mario was put in the HOF? I remember watching him all the time as a kid. Time flies…

Timeman5

I think he will fit in great in there system

Zac_Electrifly

Yeah but Jagr just scored his first goal of his 34th pro season and he’s been playing pro since before the fall of the USSR

PattyDaddy98

imagine younger kids seeing samsonov winning the calder and being confused, probably think it's ilya's dad
