EDIT: [HipHopHeads Moderator Application is now open for signups](https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/comments/11v3hgi/rhiphopheads_moderator_application_2023/)
After asking about ideas for the subreddit in yesterdays's daily discussion thread, I got some good suggestions.
The first was the idea for another mixtape/playlist exchange, which is now accepting [signups here](https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/comments/11udaba/hiphopheads_easter_2023_playlist_exchange_signup/), and **will conclude on Easter Day**.
Another suggestion that's often brought up is **the flair situation**. Due to how the old.reddit flairs are made, it's near impossible to add any more image flairs without completely starting from scratch and doing it all at once. So I was curious and looked into new.reddit flairs, which are actually pretty simple to add once you know how, and can be added in bulk without removing any of the old.reddit flairs.
These new.reddit emoji flairs also show up on mobile apps like the official Reddit app and Apollo, which is pretty neat. If you're on new.reddit or a mobile app, you should hopefully be able to see the Ice Spice flair next to my username.
I'm going to be adding a bunch of new.reddit flairs for everyone to choose from but I need some suggestions and image ideas. **Reply to this comment with photos of what you'd like to see be flairs here** and I'll probably add it and do all the resizing and converting and shit.
We got a lot of other good suggestions as well like replacing dead recurring weekly threads with new stuff (like the new Listening Club u/TheOddScreen puts on), and **opening up moderator applications**.
Looks like we've agreed on recruiting another mod or two to the team, so keep your eyes out for when mod applications open up, hopefully soon.
Any other suggestions are appreciated and will be considered, and please let me know some good flairs to add to start out with.
edit 1: Never mind about the flairs, there's a hard limit that just got reached. Will be looking around for a different way to do this though.
edit 2: Actually I figured out a way to add more but can't make them available freely through the flair picker, they have to be manually assigned to users. I guess just let me know if you want an emoji image flair
I seriously dislike most of 50 Cent’s music. I was on like 7 grams of mushrooms and losing my shit on the car ride home from a light show tonight and his garbage ass generic bars came through the radio and I was so disappointed. Bruh ain’t nobody give a fuck about your magic stick or your wack ass candy shop
Luckily my local stations also keep Ja Rule in the rotation heavy, now that’s some real 2000s hip hop before Eminem feminized rap

Killah Priest's podcast using covers a lot of thinking in like zodiac signs & Sumerian texts, occasionally covers music but rarely especially in the near 5 hour long runtime on a lot of episodes

Looking for song by Italian-American artist, lyrics were something like "I want that" or "give me that". Hip-Hop/Rap/Party music.
Song was basically about him singing about getting wealth and fame, girls and cars, I think he had an Italian flag tattoo, he was a fit metro/Jersey shore type guy with stylish haircut, shaved sides.
[looks like the sample for Science Class wasn’t cleared, it’s literally just bass and drums now lol](https://open.spotify.com/track/1EXLrnWB2apXUnrBJma6A6?si=X6e3LIcaSzuBi8my1qJcYw&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A138M0lORis5tDxurpIbd7V)
One of these days, some of these movie studios are going to figure out that half these producers and DJs are using uncleared samples for their Producer tag and there’s going to be a great purge of hiphop on streaming.
Any examples of this? Only one I can really think of is Where Would I Go from Burden Of Proof, which doesn’t really count cuz the sample had to be changed
Edit: actually Combat from uknowhatimsayin comes to mind as a good example
Sound Bwoy Burial on Smif-N-Wesson’s first album; an actual top ten 90s record for me personally

Abstaining from lyrical music before my exam on Friday to minimize stuff getting stuck in my head lol
I did my playlist for the Mixtape Exchange this morning and a J Live song ended up on it and that inspired me to listen to Best Part for the first time in actual decades.
That shit is so good, J Live was incredible
Two weeks ago I asked for the best albums from Cage and Breeze Brewin and wanted to thank everyone that gave responses (I don't think pinging users on reddit works if there are more than 3 though?). Wanted to give some time to let the sounds settle as well as give a lot of spins, and I think Re:Release is my favorite of everything that was mentioned. Hell's Winter was also way better than Movies for the Blind in my opinion.
I don’t consider myself a cheap person by any means but i just don’t feel right paying for Spotify. I think the only reason i would want it is to have an organized set of albums to listen to. You can create playlists in youtube that just consists of full albums but if i did that i would never be able to find playlists for non music related stuff and im not willing to make that sacrifice. Youtube should have a search feature for finding a certain playlist that you created, because i have dozens of them already.
What I get from Spotify:
- new releases as they drop
- release radar playlist
- superior filing/archival system for playlists (I have 10+ year old playlists)
- personalized top of the year playlists I keep for archival reasons
- immediate access to high quality streams easily findable through the search bar
- insane good curated playlists if you know how to find them, or what genres to search for
- 11/10 radio feature when used for anything but hip hop
I don't think YouTube can do any of these better than Spotify. It is worth the 5 or 10 I pay for it. Only other streaming service I need is HBO max
Idk 10 bucks a month (5 if you're a student) for unlimited access to millions of songs is an insane deal. It used to be normal to pay 10 bucks for one album lol. I would sooner go back to pirating than use YouTube, not being able to have a catalog of albums to choose from would be completely unusable for me. Spotify could be 2-3x the price it currently is and I'd still feel like it's a good ass deal given how much music I listen to.
Yeah same. It didn't feel like a big task back when I did it all the time in highschool but being able to have 5+ albums saved and ready to listen to in like a minute is undefeated.
Lol I had to do it on dial up or drive to McDonald's haha. I remember driving there just for Detroit 1
Then I learned how to get away with it at school
It was always such a big ass hassle for me. Even using datpiff was the same but I didn't have to do anything special at school for datpiff
Spotify is literally the only streaming I get my monies worth out of while I can easily live without shit like Netflix, D+ etc. Being able to quickly and conveniently throw all new releases into a "first listen" playlist and then adding my favorite tracks into genre specific playlists is like my entire music lifeline at this point. Offline downloads are also clutch for travel and saving on data usage.
>You can create playlists in youtube that just consists of full albums but if i did that i would never be able to find playlists for non music related stuff and im not willing to make that sacrifice
you kinda lost me here and I don't get what you're trying to do or say but I generally can't fathom using Youtube as my primary music source
IDK if they still do it but Spotify had a student deal which gives you Spotify premium and Hulu (with ads) for $5 a month. After you graduate it bumps up to $10 but you get to keep Hulu, which is still a sweet deal. Personally I think the convenience of it all is worth it if you listen to a good amount of music.
But yeah man, YouTube leaves a lot to be desired. They used to let you group channels you follow and then they removed it and didn't give us an alternative. Also Google Music used to let us upload our music library to the cloud and let us stream it like our own personal Spotify but they shut it down.
A bit embarrassed to say but the tik tok part of Spotify they added is kinda fire. I've always known Spotify has the capacity to recommend good stuff I haven't heard of but these days I have limited time to listen to music so 90% of it is spent on new albums I wanna listen to so listening to a recommended daily mix is unappealing to me if I'm only gonna like a third of the songs, but the new feature just shows you the best bits of songs so you kinda know right away if the whole song is worth listening to.
I don't know I tried to keep an open mind but I think it's total dogshit. I don't want my spotify to be a second tik tok where every time I open the app I'm forced to load and autoplay shit I have no interest in. I'd rather see my recent played, mixes, and other playlists/album recs. I see what you're saying but I could just scrub through songs before and it'd take me a couple seconds max so this ain't it.
I mean no, but that doesn't mean I want what was previously a very functional and navigable home screen to be permanently removed in favor of an ugly, tik tok feed that clogs my screen with shit I don't want to see or hear. It was perfect before, why ruin that?
For me, I wasn't ever really using the stuff on the "search" tab anyways (except the actual search bar of course) so I don't mind that they've added a little section for the "tik toks". I was worried it was going to be overbearing but its hardly even noticeable, pretty sure I had the update for a few days without even noticing they were there.
Most of my time is spent on the library tab which shows all the stuff you mentioned pretty much instantly anyways
New Lil Keed album is unlistenable, unfortunately. By the second song it felt boring, dated, and really just had nothing going for it in the slightest. I'm going to blame it on the label milking his death, but the guy has always been hit or miss, and this is nearly all misses. Betty Boop was the only song I'd say is alright
These people cannot be bothered to take 2 seconds out of their busy schedule to type out album names and instead force me to have to take the 2 seconds out of my busy schedule to Google that shit smh
*Me Against the World* and *All Eyez on Me*
Nah, I actually disagree. It's a cool thing that's like an inside joke in a way. And shorthand is pretty universal in jobs, look at the government every form and department and action someone takes has an acronym. And like, now that I know the acronyms for these albums its pretty easy to remember them. We don't need to get all high and mighty about every little thing. You never said yall before or some other slang? You couldn't take the 2 seconds out of your day to finish that word? That's such a silly argument.
That's just bad writing though. It's one thing if the acronym makes sense in context, like saying TPAB in a thread about Kendrick, but MATW and AEOM aren't really instantly understandable in this context since we're talking about overall rap album ratings.
Hmmmm ok. That makes sense. Make sure there's context first. Although, I'd argue some albums transcend context like MBDTF and as you mentioned TPAB. But even then there's some context because we're in the rap sub.
AEOM is a lot more understandable in a rap context since it's a significant album, same with MBDTF (and in that case considering how long the album title is, everyone shortens it anyway). Since it is an older album than the other two, it's not like instantly understood.
Me Against The World probably less so as I don't think it's as popular a Tupac album as Don Killuninati or All Eyez On Me, though I'm not big into Pac so I could be wrong.
There's a lot of old historic low GRODT ratings there from the 00s when backpackers thought 50 was the antithesis of everything Hip Hop should be. The rating has been rising over the last decade though, so you can actually thank the zoomers for that. But its still not as high as it should be.
lol always loved those people back then who thought they had a purer idea of what hip hop should be than Dre/Em/Jam Master Jay who all pushed 50 to the level he achieved and vouched for him
wtf? i can tell you're either trolling or have never listened to get rich or die trying to begin with because this is the stupidest thing written in this thread - you're saying the tape that has the streak of Many Men -> In Da Club -> High All The Time -> Heat -> If I Can't and then later has tracks like Back Down, P.I.M.P, 21 Questions, Wanksta, Lifes On The Line is a weaker project than savage mode 2, a weaker sequel to a noteworthy tape that is savage 1 lol lay off the crack
1- i didnt say grodt is weaker, i saidsavage mode II is a better project front to back, that doesnt mean grodt is weak
2- savage mode 2 washes savage 1
Lol fr GRODT could have been Patiently waiting, Many Men, P.I.M.P, If I Can't, and 15 tracks of fart noises in between and still been a better front to back listen than Savage Mode 2
I guarantee that most zoomers probably still would rate Get Rich or Die Tryin' higher it's just that rateyourmusic users aren't exactly the ones you should go to for rap opinions - i'd trust them on rock music if I listened to that but everytime I see them talk about rap it's really weird as fuck
Ridiculous imo… back in the day you had cats listening to his music every other corner. And mind you this was in the south. He’s the perfect mix of commercial juggernaut and technical prowess… its why guys like nasty nas don’t get their flowers as much these days
Yes, but it wasn’t like he was respected for it
Instead of congratulating him, this sub + Twitter and wherever were all just like “Alfredo should’ve won”
This Sub+Twitter are also where I saw him getting the most praise for "4 of his best albums in a two year span" though. Also where I see "Jay Z is overrated" the most.
To be fair Nas did win a Grammy for KD1 while Hov hasn't since 1999 and anyone who actually pays attention to the genre knows no one is fucking with Nas right now. The recent praise and attention has more to do with the Grammy's actually giving the genre the time of day to close out the show with a 8 min rap performance while letting Hov do his entire verse.
> When did it become so popular for people to call Jay Z overrated and mid?
Always, lol.
While there has been an increase recently for all the reasons Tak listed, Jay has always been a target for overrated talk. Since the very beginning. Reasonable Doubt wasn't an instant classic. It took Jay 10 years of campaigning and bigging up that album for it to be recognized as a classic. Before Jay blew up with Vol 2, it was considered a pretty good album by Biggie's buddy. Then Jay blew up with Vol 2, largely from a corny novelty single (Hardknock Life). By the time Jay started calling himself the GOAT (The Blueprint) we were right in the middle of the Jay Vs Nas beef, and naturally during that time Team Nas fans would write full fucking thesis essays on message boards about how Jay was an overrated hack, lol. There's always been a contingent of Hip Hop fans that saw Jay as a pop artist, a sellout, someone who was more concerned with commercialism than art. Sure, these criticisms have quieted down from some as the years have gone by, but some still stand by them.

This is definitely facts and I was in that camp myself at the height of the beef but anyone still hanging onto these beliefs decades later in 2023 is nuts. Hovs legacy and longevity speaks for itself at this point
Since Jay Z started calling him the best rapper alive but it ebbs and flows but more recently it’s been stronger maybe with increasing years since his last dope album *4:44* and being in the news for shit like comparing the word “capitalist” to the n word or trying to teach people in Marcy about cryptocurrency. I also think Nas’s recent strong albums have at least some part to do with it as even though the beef’s been over for so long people still naturally compare the two - and one often does well when the other seems in a slump. The final part that may be contributing is the long period of time Jay’s albums were only on Tidal although they hasn’t been the case for awhile so I don’t know if that’s still to play now.
>it’s been stronger maybe with increasing years since his last dope album 4:44 and being in the news for shit like comparing the word “capitalist” to the n word or trying to teach people in Marcy about cryptocurrency
Anyone who would use this as a knock against Hov is missing the context where this all happened 20+ years into his career while approaching and now being in his 50s which is far greater longevity than the majority of hip hop artists will ever see. Nas is on his own plane of existence lapping everyone in the genre at this point but Hov's accomplishments, longevity and relevancy across a decades long career is anything but mid and overrated. If Jay Z is mid, what does that make all the artists who didn't and won't make it past year 10?

Biosphere - *Substrata + Man with a Movie Camera*, *Substrata [Alternate Versions]* Jeremy Soule - *The Elder Schools IV: Oblivion: Original Game Soundtrack*, *The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Original Game Soundtrack* Abstaining from lyrical music before my exam on Friday to minimize stuff getting stuck in my head lol
* Project Pat - Mista Don’t Play * Juicy - Rubbaband Biz 1 & 2 * Conway/Jae Skee - Pain Provide Profit * J Live - The Best Part
Love seeing you cover the full spectrum of hip hop with J-Live on one side and Project Pat on the other!
Man Spotify is one of the best deals ever imo, family account especially
What I get from Spotify: - new releases as they drop - release radar playlist - superior filing/archival system for playlists (I have 10+ year old playlists) - personalized top of the year playlists I keep for archival reasons - immediate access to high quality streams easily findable through the search bar - insane good curated playlists if you know how to find them, or what genres to search for - 11/10 radio feature when used for anything but hip hop I don't think YouTube can do any of these better than Spotify.
I used to mainly just torrent and I will pay just to not have to torrent everything
Yeah same. It didn't feel like a big task back when I did it all the time in highschool but being able to have 5+ albums saved and ready to listen to in like a minute is undefeated.
Lol I had to do it on dial up or drive to McDonald's haha. I remember driving there just for Detroit 1 Then I learned how to get away with it at school It was always such a big ass hassle for me.
>You can create playlists in youtube that just consists of full albums but if i did that i would never be able to find playlists for non music related stuff and im not willing to make that sacrifice you kinda lost me here and I don't get what you're trying to do or say but I generally can't fathom using Youtube as my primary music source
They also have the duo thing which works out cheaper too when split with another person
712pm feels like it’s stick talk pt 2 both of em are too lit
I see what you're saying but I could just scrub through songs before and it'd take me a couple seconds max so this ain't it.
you're not forced to listen to anything tho?
What the hell…
Ha ha ha. Yea, Spotify is so awesome ... I had the same reaction!
The future is now
I just checked it out and its actually dope AF. Nice quick way to get the feel of a song or find what you're in the mood to listen to.
I want a new Lil Fame album.
Its really unfortunate that Keed passed away so young, by most accounts he was a good dude.
He would have progressed a huge amount. Huge shame
All I wanna know is good
That new Finesse2Tyme album goes stupid hard
He don’t miss
Is it technically a deluxe
yeah
easily my AOTY
Can anyone recommend some albums like kingsway library? Good samples mixed in one album
Im listening to kinsgway library sounds as a whole ass album 💀
this what downloading the free FL Studio demo will do to a mf

Rate your music has tpab rated higher than ok computer the zoomers must be stopped
Saturation 2 and 3 being higher than MATW and AEOM is worse
What are those acronyms? I want to listen to them if they're better than the Saturation albums
These people cannot be bothered to take 2 seconds out of their busy schedule to type out album names and instead force me to have to take the 2 seconds out of my busy schedule to Google that shit smh *Me Against the World* and *All Eyez on Me*
Nah, I actually disagree.

Thanks, homie. Not better than Saturations.
There's a lot of old historic low GRODT ratings there from the 00s when backpackers thought 50 was the antithesis of everything Hip Hop should be. The rating has been rising over the last decade though, so you can actually thank the zoomers for that. But its still not as high as it should be.
lol always loved those people back then who thought they had a purer idea of what hip hop should be than Dre/Em/Jam Master Jay who all pushed 50 to the level he achieved and vouched for him
GRODT has the better highlights but Savage mode II is the better project
wtf? i can tell you're either trolling or have never listened to get rich or die trying to begin with because this is the stupidest thing written in this thread - you're saying the tape that has the streak of Many Men -> In Da Club -> High All The Time -> Heat -> If I Can't and then later has tracks like Back Down, P.I.M.P, 21 Questions, Wanksta, Lifes On The Line is a weaker project than savage mode 2, a weaker sequel to a noteworthy tape that is savage 1 lol lay off the crack
1- i didnt say grodt is weaker, i saidsavage mode II is a better project front to back, that doesnt mean grodt is weak 2- savage mode 2 washes savage 1
Ok I wasn't sure at first but now you're definitely trolling
Lol fr GRODT could have been Patiently waiting, Many Men, P.I.M.P, If I Can't, and 15 tracks of fart noises in between and still been a better front to back listen than Savage Mode 2
yeah and also sm1 >>> sm2
No no no no no
Don’t look at the trap rankings on there
If Rodeo not 1 imma be disappointed

I refuse to believe 50 Cent is anyone’s least favorite mainstream NY rapper in a world where 6ix9ine, Lil Tjay, and A Boogie exist
You're doing yourself a huge disservice by not listening. It's an amazing album that's legendary for a reason
What’s the best music rating site for predominantly hip hop and R&B listeners?
there isn't one really

He got too rich, at a certain point it’s not cool any more
Ridiculous imo… back in the day you had cats listening to his music every other corner. And mind you this was in the south. He’s the perfect mix of commercial juggernaut and technical prowess… its why guys like nasty nas don’t get their flowers as much these days
When he started getting bad press from crypto if you mean in general
Because he gets 10x more praise and attention for performing one DJ Khaled verse than Nas does for dropping 4 of his best albums in a two year span
Didn't Nas win best rap album like two years ago?
Yes, but it wasn’t like he was respected for it Instead of congratulating him, this sub + Twitter and wherever were all just like “Alfredo should’ve won”

The final part that may be contributing is the long period of time Jay’s albums were only on Tidal although they hasn’t been the case for awhile so I don’t know if that’s still to play now.
>it’s been stronger maybe with increasing years since his last dope album 4:44 and being in the news for shit like comparing the word “capitalist” to the n word or trying to teach people in Marcy about cryptocurrency Anyone who would use this as a knock against Hov is missing the context where this all happened 20+ years into his career while approaching and now being in his 50s which is far greater longevity than the majority of hip hop artists will ever see. Nas is on his own plane of existence lapping everyone in the genre at this point but Hov's accomplishments, longevity and relevancy across a decades long career is anything but mid and overrated. If Jay Z is mid, what does that make all the artists who didn't and won't make it past year 10?
Of course you’re right but people only remember or focus on what’s recent
after reading someone here was in middle school in 2013 I realized no take is off limits as you mostly have no idea who's saying what online
